WARNING!We are about to do math…

Everyone complain for 5 seconds!

Page 4: Step 2: Molar Conversions

Molar ConversionsSometimes we need to know how many moles of

a substance but all we know is the mass

OR

We need to know what mass is necessary to give us a certain number of moles of a substance

This is when we need to be able to convert from moles to grams or grams to moles

Page 5: Step 2: Molar Conversions

So how do I do a molar conversion???

1. Write down what you know

2. Determine what needs to be converted (is it g mol or mol g)

3. Calculate the molar mass

4. Set up a conversion factor to cancel out the units you do not want (all that should be left is the final unit you are solving for)

5. Solve!

Page 6: Step 2: Molar Conversions

ExampleHow many moles are there in 15 grams of lithium?

Start with what we know: 15g Li

Next how will we convert this: We need to convert gmol

What is the molar mass? 6.94

In order to cancel out unwanted units, we will need to multiply the number of moles per gram1 mol / 6.94 g

Complete the calculation

2.2 mol Li

Page 7: Step 2: Molar Conversions

ExampleHow many grams in 2.2 moles of sulfur?

Start with what we know: 2.2 moles S

Next how will we convert this: We need to convert molg

What is the molar mass? 32

In order to cancel out unwanted units, we will need to multiply the number of grams per mol32 g Mg/ 1 mol Mg

Complete the calculation

70.4 mol Mg

Page 8: Step 2: Molar Conversions

ExampleHow many grams are in 4.5 moles of Sodium

Flouride, NaF?

Start with what we know:

Next how will we convert this:

What is the molar mass?

In order to cancel out unwanted units, we will need to:

Complete the calculation

Exit Ticket: How many moles in 5g of your

compound? Table 1- NiSO4
