Born in Mexico City, siblings didn't begin writing songs until 2001, when they were 18 and 15, respectively,Jesse and Joysitting down together with their father to see what they could produce. With Jesse on guitar, piano, drums, and backgroundvocals and Joy on vocals and guitar, the duo practiced constantly, hard work that paid off when they were signed to amajor-label deal with Warner Music Mexico in April 2005. Mehldau's musical personality forms a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser, and greatly cherishes thesurprise and wonder that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly, in real time. But he alsohas a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music, and it informs everything he plays. In his most inspired playing,the actual structure of his musical thought serves as an expressive device. As he plays, he listens to how ideas unwind,and the order in which they reveal themselves. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arc, whether it expresses itself in abeginning, an end, or something left intentionally open-ended. The two sides of Mehldau's personality — the improviserand the formalist — play off each other, and the effect is often something like controlled chaos.

Mehldau has performed around the world at a steady pace since the mid-1990s, with his trio and as a solo pianist. Hisperformances convey a wide range of expression. There is often an intellectual rigor to the continuous process ofabstraction that may take place on a given tune, and a certain density of information. That could be followed by a strippeddown, emotionally direct ballad. Mehldau favors juxtaposing extremes. He has attracted a sizeable following over theyears, one that has grown to expect a singular, intense experience in his performance.

In addition to his trio and solo projects, Mehldau has worked with a number of great jazz musicians, including a rewardinggig with saxophonist Joshua Redman's band for two years, recording and concerts with Charlie Haden and Lee Konitz,and recording as a sideman with the likes of Wayne Shorter, John Scofield, and Charles Lloyd. For more than a decade,he has collaborated with several musicians and peers whom he respects greatly, including the guitarists Peter Bernsteinand Kurt Rosenwinkel and tenor saxophonist Mark Turner. Mehldau also has played on a number of recordings outside ofthe jazz idiom, like Willie Nelson's and singer-songwriter Joe Henry's . was inspired by German expressionist writer Frank Wedekind's plays "Earth Spirit" and "Pandora'sDescription: LuluBox," which tell a story of a young abused dancer's life and relationships and are now collectively known as the "LuluPlays." Since their publication in the early 1900's, the plays have been the inspiration for a silent film ("Pandora's Box,"1929), an opera, and countless other creative endeavors.

Originally the lyrics and musical landscape were sketched out by Lou for a theatrical production in Berlin, but after comingtogether with the 'Tallica boys for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts in New York in 2009 all guilty parties knew theywanted to make more music together. Lou was inspired enough by that performance to recently ask the band to join him intaking his theatrical piece to the next level and so starting in early May of this year they were all camped outLulurecording at HQ studios in Northern California, bringing us to today and ten complete songs.
