the [period] and [period]

• Identify the belief

about the [x] of

disease in the first

period

• Own knowledge to

support this

[x] = Cause, prevention or

treatment

• Identify the change /

similarity of belief

reference to the Q * (using words of the Q in opening sentence)

• Specific evidence to

support that reason

Paper 1B: Medicine Q4:

Remember

You need at least 3 reasons (they suggest 2 + your own 1)

Each reason should be focused on the Q referring to it regularly

Source Usefulness [8]How useful are sources C & D

for an enquiry into [x] …

Paper 3: Germany Q3a

Remember

NATURE, ORIGIN, PURPOSEBe clear in your judgement of

each source’s usefulness

Paragraph 1: Source C

Remember context of the period

Provenance:

• Overall value of Source A• Overall value of Source B• Clear judgement on how

useful BOTH sources are in this enquiry

Paragraph 3: Conclusion

Source C is useful because it suggests (content)…I know from my own knowlthis is true because…Furthermore Source C also suggests… which is useful because….Further own knowl / contextNOP: The usefulness of Source C is enhanced / weakened by its provenance as..”Paragraph 2: Source DSource D is useful because it suggests (content)…I know from my own knowlthis is true because…Furthermore Source D also suggests… which is useful because….Further own knowl / context

Annotate the sources before answering

Different interpretations [4]

Identify the view of interpretation 1 –“Interpretation 1 suggests / emphasises / focuses on…”

Interpretation 1:

Paper 3: Germany Q3b:

Remember

5-10 Mins MAXIMUM

Identify a main difference:

Therefore, a main difference between the two interpretations is…

On the other hand

Evidence to support this –“I know this as the interpretation talks about…”

Identify the view of interpretation 2 –“Interpretation 2 suggests / emphasises / focuses on…”

Interpretation 2:

Evidence to support this –“I know this as the interpretation talks about…”

Why different interpretations [4]

• They have given weight to 2 different sources

Reasons why (choose ONE):

Paper 3: Germany Q3c:

RememberWhichever reason you choose you need details from the sources / interpretations to back up your explanation

On the other hand

“The interpretations may differ because the historians have given weight to different sources. For example, Source C describes…”

Option 1 – Different sources:

Identify the first source’s point

• They are partial extracts – eg one might be talking about successes, the other failures. They're both right, just not considering each other’s side

• The authors have different emphasis

Which interpretation does the first source support?

Identify the 2nd source’s pointWhich interpretation does the 2nd source support?

Whereas

The interpretations may not actually contradict each other, they might just focus on different reasons.

Option 2 – Partial extracts:

Identify the first interpretation’s reasons with details

“Both interpretations suggest that…”

Identify the 2nd interpretation’s reasonswith details

Whereas

“The interpretations may differ because the authors have a different emphasis. Interpretation 1 focuses more on [x] whereas interpretation 2 focuses more [y]…”

* Option 3 – Author’s emphasis

Identify the first interpretations view / focus / emphasis - with details

Identify the 2nd interpretations view / focus / emphasis - with details

Eg: How far do you agree with interpretation 1 about [x]… [16+4]

• State the view of the main (focus of Q) interpretation

• Use specific detail from the interpretation to support your point

• Own knowledge that AGREES with the view

• (A second piece of own knowledge) “Furthermore…”

Paper 3: Germany Q3d:

Remember Be clear on the view of the interp.Consider points from both interpretations

Paragraph 1: Main interpretation

• State how the other interpretation challenges / disagrees with the view of the main interpretation

• (A second piece of evidence to disagree) ”Moreover…”

Paragraph 2: Disagree / challenge

Give a final judgement on how far you agree (larger / lesser extent)

Briefly explain why you’vereached this judgement

Paragraph 4 (CONCLUSION)

Use your own knowledge & contextual awareness of the period

• An example from your own knowledge that disagrees / challenges the main interpretation

• A second piece of own knowledge to challenge

Paragraph 3: (Disagree Own Knw)

Interpretation – How far do you agree? [20]

Further guidance on Source Q’s

This source usefulness skill is one tojust practice!

Job 1: NOPCAT test the source(s) on the

question paper - quickly. Identify what

the NOP of the source is and find

positives and negatives of the NOP. Your

CAT test’s positive and negatives will

also help in your answer.

Underline and understand the focus of

the enquiry, how useful are the sources

into … [x]

Job 2: Begin with Source A and turn your

NOPCAT notes / analysis into full

sentences, referring back to the Q’s

enquiry each time.

Remember you need to be saying how

the sources are useful AND not useful

Job 3: Repeat ‘3’ but for Source B

Job 5: Conclusion – Summarise how

useful each source is overall briefly

suggest why one is more useful.

1 2 3

4

This is guidance for Trenches Q2a

Germany Q3a is basically the same, but a bigger focus on how the sources are positively useful, you’ll still need to reflect on their limitations with more emphasis on NOP.
