SPIE Student Chapter Report Fall 2008 

On Campus – Activities  

A. MATLAB Workshop We organized a MATLAB  introductory workshop, which was  intended  to provide basic knowledge on how to manipulate the software to solve scientific problems. A total  of  21  participants  attended  the  workshop,  and  came  from  different backgrounds, mainly physics and biotechnology. The workshop had duration of 3 hours, and was open to all the student community at no cost. The  instructor was José Hipólito García (Polo), one of our chapter members.    

B. Introduction to Latex Another activity organized by our  chapter was a  Latex workshop, also  taught by Polo.  The  idea was  to  help  the  students  get  equipped with  the  basic  tools  to present a more professional scientific report. The duration of the activity was three hours, with a total of 12 participants. This activity was open to all public, but we only had participants from the student chapter. Although we were expecting more attendants,  we  consider  it  was  a  success  due  to  the  fact  that  most  of  the

participants  are  now  making  extensive  use  of  Latex  to  present  their  project reports.  

C. Introduction to MOEMS One of  the major activities was  the organization of a workshop  for providing an introduction to MOEMS design. The workshop was given by our chapter member and PhD student, Sergio Camacho. This activity took place at the MEMS Laboratory here  at  Tecnológico  de Monterrey,  and  the  participants  were  given  a  manual prepared by Sergio. During the activity the students learned the basics of MOEMS, and  how  to  use  COVENTOR  software  to  design  basic  devices.  The  main contribution of  this activity  for  the  chapter and our  student community was  the promotion  of  the  MEMS  research  group,  and  the  fact  that  it  opened  up opportunities  for  our  undergraduate members  to  become  involved  in  research projects, at an early stage in their programs.

 D. Recruiting new members 

Another permanent activity  is  recruiting new members. To  this end, we set up a booth  during  a  whole  week,  usually  the  first  week  of  the  semester.  We  give information about the benefits of becoming SPIE members, and give away posters and other promotional materials. Promotion of the chapter was also supported by faculty  from  the  physics  department  and  optics  center, who  allowed  us  to  visit their classrooms for a few minutes to invite more people to join.

Off Campus ­ Outreach activites The most important outreach activities we do outside Tec are two hands‐on activities for the dissemination of science, aiming at improving the awareness of our local community about the importance of science and technology in general, and more specifically about the relevance of optics.  

A. Terrific Telescopes This activity took place  in José Vasconcelos school,  located  in Guadalupe, NL. We had  a  total  of  38  K‐10  students  divided  into  two  groups.  The materials  for  the workshop consisted on  the “Hands‐on Optics Kit”  that were generously provided by SPIE, OSA, and NOAO.

B. Liquid Crystals The  objective  is  to  introduce  K12  students  to  the  topic  of  Liquid  Crystals  by implementing  the  "mood  patch"  activity,  using  the materials  kindly  provided  by Prof. Stephen Jacobs, from the University of Rochester. This is a permanent activity we do every  semester, with great  results. During  the period Fall 2007 – Spring  ‐2008 we  visited  three different  schools performing  the  activity with  almost  110 students.

Planned Activities for 2008 – 2009  

C. Member Recruitment Week (Early February, 2009) During  the  first week  of  February  2009, we will mount  a Member  Recruitment stand at a specific  location  in Tecnológico de Monterrey  in order  to  increase  the member roaster of our SPIE Student Chapter. 

D. Outreach Activities (Fall 2008 through Fall 2009) Several outreach activities will be carried out through Fall 2008 to Fall 2009. Some of the planned outreach activities are listed below. 

a. LaTeX  Workshops:  The  LaTeX  workshop  is  designed  to  give  a  brief introduction to writing scientific documents with LaTeX. Tentatively, we will impart two workshops, one in Fall 2008, and the other one in Spring 2009. 

b. MATLAB Workshops: We plan to give 3 MATLAB workshops throughout the year. The  first one will be an  introductory course to MATLAB  for students who have never used  it. The second workshop  is destined to  intermediate users who  have  some  experience with MATLAB.  The  last workshop will cover how to generate high quality graphics with MATLAB. 

c. Liquid  Crystals  Workhops:  Several  workshops  involving  “mood  patches” using liquid crystals will be carried out in primary and secondary schools in Monterrey.  Students  will  be  introduced  to  the  optical  concepts  behind color changes in liquid crystals. 

d. EDUKIT:  In addition  to  the LC workshops, we plan  to  introduce secondary and pre‐college students to diffraction and refraction phenomena using the EDUKITs distributed for free by SPIE. 

e. Workshops for Kids during the XVIII International Book Fair: During the XVIII International Book Fair we will give some optics workshops for kids, which will include both the LC and the EDUKIT activities. 

E. Visiting Lecturer Program (November 2008, March 2009) We plan  to hold  two  lectures by members of  the Visiting Lecturer Program. The first one will be given by Prof. Ivan I. Smalyukh, on November 21st, 2008, which will be titled “Controlling matter by focused beams: laser tweezers and laser shapers”. We  intend  to  invite  Prof.  Virendra  N.  Mahajan  to  give  the  lecture  “Gaussian Apodization and Beam Propagation” in March 2009. 

F. IV Scientific Photography Contest (Spring 2009) As in previous years, in Spring 2009 we will carry out the IV Scientific Photography Contest  in both  categories: digital photography  and printed photography. Prices will be given by some of our previous sponsors.

G. Optics Open House (before Fall 2009) We will organize an Optics Open House which will take place sometime before Fall 2009 where we will present some of the current research done by members of our Student Chapter. 

H. Bi‐weekly Seminars (Fall 2008 through Fall 2009) Optics  and  Physics  seminars will  be  imparted  every  two weeks  in  collaboration with the Optics Center from Tecnológico de Monterrey. These seminars will be free of cost, and open to all public.
