Past Activities

Identity T‐shirt: Last year, both SPIE and OSA Universidad del Valle Student Chapters were looking for an identity mark and decided to make T‐shirts for every member with the CUVO logo.

Here are some of our SPIE Student Chapter members wearing our new distinctive T‐shirt at the University Campus. From left to right: David Rivas, Mauricio Reyes, Julio Quiceno, Boris Cabrera, Claudia Valdes, our advisor Prof. Efrain Solarte, Carlos Melo, Edison Rosero and Alberto Osorio.

Conferences Participation: Our past president, Alberto Osorio, participated in the 2007 version of the Student Chapter Leadership Workshop thanks to the Officer Travel Grant. In that workshop he socialized with people from other countries and he shared some experiences with some SPIE Chapter Leaders. Besides, he presented some of his undergraduate work results at the Optics + Photonics Conference in a poster called:”1D measurement of fluid speed by laser Doppler anemometry”.

In February 2008, Claudia Valdes attended the Winter College on Micro and Nanophotonics for Life Sciences, a workshop hosted by the International Center for Theoretical Physics, ICTP, in Trieste, Italy, and sponsored by SPIE. She presented a technical poster with some of her research results and also had the opportunity of meeting some members from INAOE SPIE Student Chapter.

Optics dissemination activity: Our outreach activity, for last period, combined the abilities and potentials of OSA and SPIE Student Chapters on a Workshop on Optics specially designed for children from a vulnerable zone in our city. The zone where we carried out the activity is located in the hillsides of Cali and it is known as “Pueblo Joven” (Young Town). This activity was possible thanks to a contact we made with some students of Sociology at our University, who lead a Community Center in that place, called “CENTRO CULTURAL LA RED, CCR”. This center is intended to promote varied cultural, artistic, recreational and technical activities, as well as sports, all around the year to the community people. In this opportunity they opened their doors and allowed us to bring their children basic knowledge on Optics with our activity: “Experience the magic of light and color”. The activity was aimed to boys and girls with ages between 8 and 13 years, and our main purpose was to bring them some easy concepts on Optics with some homemade experiments.

Alberto shows how a telescope functions and Boris explains the human eye anatomy and physiology.

Future Activities During the period 2008 – 2009, we want to keep on with our outreach activities for Science dissemination through Optics, joining efforts with the Universidad del Valle OSA Student Chapter. In August, our president is participating at the Student Chapter Leadership Workshop and he is attending the Optics + Photonics Conference, where he is going to present his own work results. He is also presenting a poster with our last year activities at the Student Chapter Exhibition. In September we are going to continue activities with the children of the Cultural Center “La Red” in the hillsides of Cali. We are going to construct with them a telescope and we are going to make some astronomical observations from the Center. The telescope will stay at the Center for future activities. Beginning the next academic semester, we are planning a new action to promote SPIE and to increase our chapter members. We are planning astronomical observations at the University Campus as a divulgation activity for everybody (students, staff or visitors). We are restructuring our Chapter webpage and we are looking for a new domain. This year we want to continue growing our relations with other SPIE Chapters sharing with them our experiences.
