Student led conferenceSThank you to those families who have booked a time on Monday or Tuesday evening to meet with your child and a teacher to share their learning goals. We still have about half of our families who are still to register. If this is you, please head over to: www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use event code Q V H Q A to register. We have supplied this information to you since the beginning of the year through regular updates in our newsletter, Facebook, emails from parent carers and included the information on the front page of our website.

Once again, this is an important reminder to everyone that our newsletter is our main form of communication.

AttendAnceWe have had much success this year with the rollout of our SMS attendance system and already we have seen a reduction in the amount of unexplained absences across the school. We do still have a large number of student absences for other reasons. While we understand that illness and medical reasons are often unavoidable, we must consider the positive impact that regular attendance has on a child’s development. Children with positive attendance habits have consistently been found to have:

higher academic achievement including literacy and numeracy

LE NOTIZIE DI TREVORCiao

a tutti! Last Wednesday our 5/6

student returned from a very successful camp to Campaspe

Downs. From all reports the students and staff had a fantastic time, they challenged themselves and many had the opportunity to overcome a fear or learn a new skill. Camps are a wonderful opportunity for our children to build relationships with each other and their teachers in a different environment. As teachers, we always take great pleasure in knowing that each camp we are going to see a child extend their learning beyond the classroom and school. Thank you to the following staff who gave up their time to make the camp a reality; Aydan, Aimee, cinzia, toby, rachel, Geraint, Milly and Sarah rS. Our 5/6 students are also to be commended on their behaviour at camp – we received some fantastic reports upon their return to school.

WorkinG beeSOver the past couple of weeks, Geoff Cope has been working alongside Alan, Michael and robyn taking part in some pop up working bees during the school day. The work has been taking place so quietly, that a recent trip behind the 5/6 portable showed me the huge task they’d been tackling - building a retaining wall as part of a new courtyard area. This part of the school was looking very unsightly and overgrown only a couple of months ago, and already it’s much cleaner and is looking to be a functional space for our students to use.

nigel Wilson was also very busy over the long weekend showing our Foundation courtyard some love. He and tim, chloe, nigel, Vicky and Jamie helped installed some new seating in the area for our students to use during eating time. Thank you all for working to make our school grounds a wonderful place.

 longer school retention

increasing opportunities for students to learn and access educational resources, further supporting achievement

decreased absenteeism in higher year levels

Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school. So, while it might be tempting to let your child hit the snooze button or take that extra-long weekend, please remember that every day counts!

Student Accident inSurAnce/AMbulAnce coVer ArrAnGeMentSFamilies are reminded that the Department of Education does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents and carers of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/transport and any other transport costs. You can purchase insurance policies from commercial insurers. We’d also like to remind families and staff that the Department does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and it has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property.

ProfeSSionAl leArninGWe’ve been sending staff off left, right and centre for professional learning opportunities lately. Congratulations to Steffie and Aydan who have been selected for a course run by Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership, Impact. This program is designed for emerging school leaders who have recently accepted school leadership responsibilities. Bethany and Toby are also attending a similar program, Inpsire which is designed for new school leaders. Maree has commenced a leading literacy course run by the Department and three of our school curriculum leaders Maree, Elke and Sarah will be attending the Network Curriculum Professional Learning next week. This is a snapshot of what’s

happening now and highlights our commitment to constant learning as a school.

body SAfetyThe school has engaged body Safety Australia to run some sessions with our students, staff and families next term. Keep Tuesday 24th April free from 7-8pm to find out a little more about the program and how it will be offered to our students. This is part of our involvement in Respectful Relationships as a chosen partner school.

fAreWellFinally this week, we say farewell to Sanae! We wish Sanae and Daniel the very best for their journey together as a new family. On behalf of our whole school community we’d like to thank Sanae for her fantastic dedication to our school and we hope to see her back at BSPS early next year!

Have a fantastic fortnight!

Trevor.

Please remember that our school yard is supervised from 8.45am – 9.00am in the morning and then from 3.30pm – 3.45pm in the afternoons. Any child in the yard outside of these times needs to be in Out of School Hours Care (OSHC). Our 3.45pm bell is a reminder that all students in the yard who haven’t been collected need to go to reception.

FOUNDATION Our classes have involved wonderful singing and craft activities of api, elefanti and ippopotami. We have also learned to ‘Read to Someone’ and ‘Read to Self’, we practise this each morning.

We are continuing to use our growth mindset to achieve our goals! Dai dai, che ce la fai!

GRADE 1/2

In Foundation, we have started going to school five days a week! A momentous step for our students!

In our English literacy classes we have been continuing the Michelle Hutchinson SMART Spelling program. So far, our focus words have been cat, ant and we are currently learning tin. We focus on them for two weeks. Our up and coming words are:

 tap sun net

The program supports learning by firstly saying the word, then the sound of the individual letters, followed by saying the letter names.

In our Italian literacy classes we have been learning the Italian alphabet and the important vowel sounds – a, e, i, o, and u.

Congratulations to the brave (and lucky) students who presented at assembly on Friday!

In number we have been skip-counting and this week we went outside to play skip-counting hopscotch. Make sure you follow us on twitter for more learning updates! @12BSPS

PERFORMING ARTS

cAll for VolunteerS!I am looking for enthusiastic parents, carers, friends who are willing to contribute their time and skills to assist in the creation of this year’s end of year Performing Arts event. If you are keen to help in the lead up to this year event please come to meet with me Friday the 20th of April from 9.00 to 10.30 in the BSPS’s staff room.

Those who attend this meeting will gain an understanding of the end of year school event through an introductory presentation. In this meeting, I will speak about the idea behind the event, and seek to collect the names and availability of volunteers who would like to be involved in this new project.

This year the event will take place in October. As I am sure you know, this type of projects requires a lot of forward planning and collaboration. It is for these reasons that it is better to meet sooner rather than later.

It would work best if you could be at the school by 9:00am.

Feel free to contact me at [email protected] Also, feel free to approach me in the yard, you will make my day a “great one”.

I look forward to meeting with you in the near future.

Kind regards,

Daniele Vitali

A FINAL NOTEThe end of year concert is set to take place in Term 4. In the near future I will start looking for volunteers that would like to contribute their time and skill to the concert production process. If you are interested in helping with making costumes, props, music or anything else, feel free to approach me in the yard, you will make my day a “great one”.

buldinG And GroundS Sub-coMMittee

The B&G Sub Committee is busy. We are proud of the progress of the West Wall Garden re-development, cannot wait to see the shade sail be installed and the area becoming a well used part of our school.

The working bees have made good progress on our tactical actions, with the initial focus being the south east garden corner. Wave if you see us there or even come in for a chat. Next will be the new sandpit/s and replanting trees in the two (currently) empty garden boxes in the foundation 1 / 2 court area.

Working bees will remain a key part of our focus this year. Please don’t be put off if you don’t feel you have technical know-how. We are happy to steer and help volunteers contribute.

Please put your name on the ‘Flash-Mob Working Bee – Planner’ at the front desk and or call/text Geoff on 0411 114 426. Working bees will run for 2-3 hours each between 0830-1100 and focus on projects listed in our published 2018 Action Plan.

Our strategic efforts also continue, though are slower to see results in, thanks to Sebastian and Victoria for their interest to assist.

Finally the committee would like to welcome our newest member, Martyn Zdanius. Martyn has been a rock of (behind the scenes) support over the last couple of years though recently enquired to join. We are delighted to have Martyn in the group and look forward to welcoming more as needed.

Cheers

oSHc Sub- coMMitteeThe end of term meeting of the sub-committee with Camp Australia will be next Thursday 22 March at 6pm at BSPS. Anyone with an interest is welcome to attend - particularly if you’d like to join the committee!

We will be using the following criteria to have a conversation about how things are going in the program:

local responsiveness: to students, parents and the school

enjoyment: richness of activities, and sense of comfort by students

cultural fit: the service is an extension of the welcoming school community

administration: simple and transparent for parents and the school

regulation: standards are at least met

I look forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Policy Sub-coMMitteeTo all Policy enthusiasts, the policy committee is looking for new members to join our friendly team of individuals dedicated to writing, reviewing and maintaining the school’s numerous policies and procedures.

If you are passionate about good governance; want to shape the way in which the school implements its views and values; like making procedures clear and accessible; have a flair for direct accessible communication, then the policy committee may be the place for you.

The policy committee oversee and maintain the school’s policies and procedures including developing and reviewing them on a rotating schedule or according to priority.

The policy committee formally reports to school council at each council meeting and policies developed require ratification by school council before it takes effect.

Dear Parent/Guardian RE: School Run 4 Fun Colour Explosion From today, we commence the School Run4Fun Colour Explosion which is as a major fundraiser this term so we do ask for your support. The more money we raise the more we can provide for the students through vital school projects in particular the playground.

The School Run4Fun Colour Explosion will be held on 27th March starting at 1pm – 3pm. We do ask that you bring a spare change of clothes to school, most importantly a plain white shirt as the students will be covered in powder from head to toe. The day’s focus is on fun and fitness with the added benefit of raising funds for our school.

Colour Powder The colour powder used in our event has been sourced direct from India, the home of Holi Powder. It is made of high quality corn starch and permitted food colours. It’s non-toxic, biodegradable, skin safe and environmentally friendly. Toxicological Risk Assessment and ingredient listings can be obtained from the School Office upon request. Students with asthma are advised to be careful in their decision to participate.

How Does My Child Fundraise? Students have now received a Sponsorship Form with instructions on how to raise money and order prizes. Students obtain donations in cash using the Sponsorship Form together with online fundraising.

Students who raise as little as $10 or more will receive an incentive prize for their efforts. But why not aim higher? You have the option to choose up to five (5) prizes and this will set your fundraising goal. Family and friends are your greatest supporters, so ask them first for your support. You will reach your fundraising goal in no time.

Student Profile Page Create a Student Profile Page at www.myprofilepage.com.au which is unique to you. There are also some great features like recording your sponsorships and selecting your prize goal.

You can also register for online fundraising. It’s the easiest way to help your child raise money and to reach your fundraising goal sooner. The average raised per student using online fundraising is $120.

WIN A SHARE OF $70,000 WORTH OF FREE SPONSORSHIP DONATIONS. Create a Student Profile Page at www.myprofilepage.com.au and enter your unique code found on page five (5) of your Sponsorship Form to see if you’re an instant winner. Give your fundraising goal a kick start!

How to Order Prizes? To reward your child for their efforts, they will receive incentive prizes based on the total amount of sponsorship dollars raised in cash, online, and if applicable, any FREE SPONSORSHIP DONATIONS won using the unique code on page five (5) of the Sponsorship Form. You have two options to place your prize order:

1. Login or create a Student Profile Page at www.myprofilepage.com.au. Once the fundraiser has finished, click the ‘ORDER MY PRIZE’ button and then confirm your total amount raised and order your prize/s, OR 2. Complete the back page of the Sponsorship Form and return to the school.

Please note, all donations need to be finalised on or before 28th March. Student prizes will be delivered shortly after.

Thank you in advance for your participation, and get ready for a BLAST OF COLOUR! Happy fundraising! Monique DawsonCommunity and Partnerships
