Melanie’s Thoughts Melanie Wait Principal Once again it is been a busy fortnight filled with a large number of activities aimed at supporting our students both in their academic and social development. Some of the activities that our students have participated in during the last fortnight include: Career Pathways Day Mock Interviews Our Year 5’s have supported our Kinder Orientation Program Year 6 into 7 Transition Day Premier’s Spelling Bee Science and Literacy Extravaganza Coffex Coffee Making Course Primary Industries – Fencing District Athletics Carnival Student Achievement Over the past few weeks I have been spending time in classrooms and looking through students work. It has been extremely pleasing to see the quality work that students are completing. I encourage all of our students to consistently produce their best work and I encourage parents to take the time to read through your child’s books and monitor their progress also. I have also been extremely impressed with the behaviour of our students across the school. One of the lovely things about a central school is seeing older students providing guidance and leadership to our younger students. This is something that happens a lot in our school and something we value. I am extremely proud of the achievements of our students. Careers It seems that this fortnight has been filled with information about career planning. Last week we held a ‘Career Pathways Day’ where students from Year 10 to 12 worked with local service providers to identify potential pathways for them in the future. As a follow up this week our Year 10 and some Year 11 students participated in our Mock Interview Program. This program involves students identifying a job they may like to apply for. Students then need to create a resume, job application and participate in a job interview for the position. This is an excellent program that allows students to develop their skills for seeking work. I have also attended the VTAC Parent Briefing which outlined the ways in which students can apply for university or TAFE enrolment and the types of special considerations and scholarships available to students. If students or parents would like any further information they can speak to Mrs Morton or myself about this process. Last Sunday, Sunraysia Institute of TAFE Swan Hill, held their Open Day. I was amazed at the quality of the facilities that are available for people in our area to access. Our students in Years 10, 11 and 12 complete their Metals and Engineering course at Swan Hill TAFE and they access the most up to date technology available. Next year the Swan Hill TAFE will also have a branch of Deakin University operating on their campus. Deakin University are running a program called Deakin on Your Door Step where students will have the opportunity to obtain an Associate Degree in Swan Hill. These associate degrees will give students a pathway to university study. $8.00

Report continued Raising the Leaving Age NSW legislation has recently changed the leaving age for students in NSW. At the beginning of 2010 all students who are currently enrolled (that includes those students who completed Year 10 2009) are required to attend school until the age of 17. Students will be exempt if they undertake full time TAFE study or gain full time employment. This is a significant change to the previous age ruling of 15 years.

Visitors to our School Remember that visitors to our school must sign in and out of our school grounds. This is an Occupational Health and Safety requirement to ensure that we know who is on the school premises in case of emergency.

It is also a departmental requirement that all parents working with students complete a ‘Child Protection’ check. We would like to encourage all parents to assist in our school where possible. A copy of the form (Prohibited employment declaration) is below. Please complete and return to the front office

Primary News Values Our value for Week 4 is Responsibility. The value for last week was Respect. Well done to the following students who showed great skill in modelling this value. Kindergarten - Ryan Domaille Year 1/ 2 - Manu Nimo Year 3/ 4 - Leighton Wilkins Year 5/ 6 - Jaide Berg The value for Week 2 was Excellence. Congratulations to the following students who excelled in demonstrating this value. Kindergarten - Toni Mia Scalora Year 1/ 2 - April Buccheri Year 3/ 4 - Tanner Gleeson Year 5/ 6 - Remy Lockhart ‘Home Read It’ Yellow Booklets Congratulations to all those students who are continually reading and recording the texts which they have read in their yellow ‘Home Read It’ Booklets. Some students are already up to 150 nights home reading – what an achievement! Please keep up these great efforts. And a quick note to those children who haven’t been reading as regularly, there is still plenty of time to get the ‘Reading Bug’ – remember there is an exciting reward on offer at the end of the year for those students who read 200 nights plus. Let’s get reading! Kindergarten Orientation 2010 Our second Kindergarten Orientation for students commencing Kindergarten in 2010 was held on Thursday, 13th August. Once again students had a very busy morning and quickly adapted into ‘Big School’ life. The Pre-School children are fast becoming experts on the SmartBoard as they endeavoured to match their name to their ‘special teddy bear’. Children did a wonderful and very creative job on their calico bags using hand and thumb prints and fabric paint. The book, ‘Teddy and the Blue Butterfly’ by Gerry Lane proved to be very popular. It was about a little girl who ‘rescued’ an unwanted bear who had no eyes from a toy shop. In true magical style the little girl’s wish came true and a miracle occurred - the bear was given eyes.

The children then made some bears using crayon, scissors, split pins and of course some very interesting pom pom and ‘googly’ eyes! A highlight of the morning was the ‘Teddy Bear’ treasure hunt where students had to locate their ‘unique bear’ in the playground. The Pre-School children also had a wonderful time playing a variety of outside games including ‘Rob the Nest’, ‘Statues’ and ‘Captain’s Coming’. A big thank you to Larissa Andrews, Leah McAlpine and Terri Ogle for all their help in bringing the children up to school and assisting in making the activities so fun and interactive. The Year Five Buddies were once again amazing and continually showed great initiative and positive encouragement in assisting the younger students.

Emma and Buddy Jessica show the bear they made.

Buddy Callum and Jack show the bear they created. The dates for the next Kindergarten Orientation for 2010 will be:

• Thursday, 10th September: 9am – 1pm. • Thursday, 17th September:9am – 1pm

Hope to see you all there!

Extension Group This term Mrs Kelli Edelsten has been working with a group of students in Year Three/Four to challenge and extend their thinking in solving some very interesting and complex mathematical problems. They have been using a variety of online activities to aide them in further developing their strong mathematical skills. Literacy Programmes Starting this week in each primary classroom on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, Mrs Maryanne Ritchie will be assisting students in guided reading groups and maths groups. Class teachers are thrilled to have this additional support in the classrooms as it enables all students to be given more individualised instruction – this can only be a bonus and a big positive. Mrs Nola Jager will also be working for one day a week with selected students for an intensive reading program. Athletics Coaching Apologies for the last Bridge report that stated that there would be some specialised Athletics Coaching beginning in Week Three in preparation for the PSSA District Athletics Carnival and Nyah Sports Day. Unfortunately this coaching will not commence until Monday, 24th August. These coaching sessions will occur for Year One to Year Six students on every Monday and Friday until the Nyah Sports Day which will be held on Thursday, 3rd September. Please ensure that students bring appropriate footwear on these days. A special well done to all those students who have been practising very hard in their lunch times in preparation for some anticipated brilliant performances at the District Athletics Carnival. We will have to wait for the next Bridge for a run down of Tooleybuc’s performances. Science and Literacy Extravaganza This was a great day and was held yesterday on Thursday, 20th August. Thank you to all those parents and friends who came and shared in this wonderful event with us. The science activities which occurred in the morning session were lots of fun and enabled students to participate in a variety of hands on, interactive lessons. A big thank you must go to Miss Rutherford for organising these great experiments and activities.

Tarini and Remy looking at the reflected light through a glass of water.

After learning about the stars Madison made her own star. The ‘Book Week Parade’ was a great spectacle of colour and creative costumes. Thank you to all those parents and friends who assisted children in making some truly incredible outfits.

Riley as Mr Fussy Congratulations to

the following winners of the colouring competition: • Kindergarten – Sam Buccheri • Year One/Two – Riley McNab • Year Three/Four – Laura Domaille • Year Five/Six – Georgia Gleeson

After the Book Week Parade a parent information session was given to offer some ideas in assisting children with their literacy and mathematical skills. Thank you to Mrs Edelsten who presented a very informative talk on strategies to aide children with their reading of texts. Please remember if you were unable to attend the literacy and mathematics

information session due to other commitments, please contact the school if you are interested in accessing the resources which were distributed. District Athletics Carnival This was held today on Friday, 21st August at Tooleybuc Central School. Stay tuned for the next edition of the Bridge for an outline of our students’ results on the day.

Up and Coming Events Nyah Sports Day This will be held at Tooleybuc Central School on Thursday, 3rd September. The Nyah Sports Day involves all students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Primary Assembly This will be held in Week Eight on Friday, 18th September in the MPC commencing at 12pm. Year Three/Four will be presenting an item so please keep this date clear in your diary. We would love to see you all there. Environmental Talk At school on 9th September given by Donna Wardlow discussing how we can recycle in schools. Swan Hill Drama Excursion Students from Kindergarten to Year Four will attend an excursion to Swan Hill on Wednesday, 16th September where they will watch the Short Film Festival for Kids. More information will be sent out closer to the event. Fire Brigade Talk The Fire Brigade will visit our school on 24th September. The Fire Brigade will discuss their role in our community. Premier’s Spelling Bee The Year Three to Year Six Students competed in the Premier's Spelling Bee on Friday, 14th August. We are all very proud of all the students because they all had a try at competing in the spelling bee which included some very difficult words to spell. Year Five/Six were first to compete in the spelling bee. The fourth and final round included Cody, Callum and Georgia. Cody came first and a run off was needed between Callum and Georgia to discover who would come second and third. Callum ended up coming second and Georgia came third. Well done Year Five/Six for having a go and for your conduct during the spelling bee! Year Five/Six 1st – Cody Stobaus 2nd – Callum McNab 3rd – Georgia Gleeson

Year Three/Four competed next. The fourth and final round included Prue and Casey. Prue came first and Casey came second. There was a run off needed to determine third place. This took place between Tom, Beau and Jemima and it took two rounds to discover third place which turned out to be Jemima. This was the first time for a lot of the Grade 3/4's to compete in a spelling bee and they were all fantastic with their effort and behaviour during the spelling bee. Year Three/Four 1st – Prudence McKindlay 2nd – Casey Harvey 3rd – Jemima Bowring Once again, congratulations to all for competing and to the winners. The first two students in each class will participate at Griffith on Tuesday 22nd September. We wish these students all the very best in their pursuit of spelling dominance! Miss Rutherford and Mrs Jenvey Green Action Group The students involved in this C.O.I.L Group which focuses on improving the school environment have made some progress toward ensuring a clean school. The students suggested that mini merits be given to all students by students and teachers to reward positive actions in the playground. These mini merits are green and accumulating five is equivalent to one blue merit. Students should see Miss Smith to ‘cash in’ their five green ones. We have also made plans to fundraise so we can buy gardening tools and seedlings. Along with Miss Hay’s 1/2 class the GAG Group have just planted seeds in the AG Farm’s Hothouse in an attempt to produce our own vegetable gardens. Our worm farms are also flourishing. Kindergarten On the two Pre-School visit days, the Kindergarten students were excellent helpers who displayed great maturity and an eagerness to help their ‘younger friends’. All Kindergarten students went out of their way to make the Pre-Schoolers feel comfortable and at ease in their new environment. The Kindergarten students thoroughly enjoyed participating in the various activities and definitely led by example when completing the different tasks. In our book study on ‘Rosie’s Walk’ by Pat Hutchins students have been producing some excellent sentences. We have also been working hard on using cut up sentences which enables students to

closely look at all the words that make up the given sentence and then practise recreating and reconstructing it. Kindergarten’s Sentences I went for a walk across the school, around the oval and got back in time for dinner. By Toni Mia I went for a walk around the river, across the bridg and got back in time for lunch. By Gladys Atkinson I went for a walk past the school, past the playground and got back in time for lunch.

By Natalia Smith

I went for a walk across from the puppies’ yard and got back in time for breakfast. By Nicole Doolan I went for a walk past the tunnel, over the hill and got back in time for dinner. By Mackayla Harvey I went for a walk to the forest, under the trees, around the pond and got back in time for dinner.

By Padraig Lyons I went for a walk across the park and got back in time for breakfast. By Joseph Mammone I went for a walk through the town and got back in time for lunch. By Ryan Domaille I went for a walk past the shed, around the lake and got back in time for lunch. By Sara Berg I went for a walk past the house and got back in time for dinner. By Cooper Andrews I went for a walk past the shed and got back in time for dinner. By Sam Bucchari Students are continuing to progress in their reading and their understanding and comprehension of what they are reading. In class we are all working hard on becoming increasingly familiar with the alternative sounds and spellings, eg. “ai” can also be written as ‘ay’ and ‘a-e’; “ee” can also be written as ‘ea’; “er’ can also be written as ‘ir’ and ‘ur’ – just to name a few. Knowing these alternative sounds and spellings will assist and give children further strategies in working out unknown words in their reading. In mathematics, Kindergarten students are becoming very proficient at counting by 10s, 5s and 2s as well as backwards by 1s from 20. We are just beginning to work on ‘Number Doubles’, eg. 1 + 1 = 2; 2 + 2 = 4, etc. as well as our ‘Friends of Tens’, eg. 9 + 1 = 10; 8 + 2 = 10; 7 + 3 = 10, etc. If these number sentences can become automatic for

children it will definitely aide them in becoming very fast and accurate mathematicians when solving everyday maths problems. This week Kindergarten completed a number of art activities centred around the Book Week Theme, “Book Safari”. Our cutting, pasting and painting skills definitely got a work out with all students producing some excellent work. Keep up the great work Kindergarten – how the year is flying by – you will all be in Year 1 before we know it! Year One/Two We have had a very exciting and busy few weeks here at Tooleybuc Central School. It is nearly half way through the term already and the students from Year One and Two have produced some fabulous work in class. We have got our vegetable seeds planted and we are raising our seedlings in the hot house over at the Ag Plot. We are looking after them by watering them and maintaining the Ag Plot with the help of the Green Action Group and Miss Smith. We could still do with some seedlings, as our seeds will not produce vegetables ready to pick until the end of term, so if you have any that you would like to send into school that would be fabulous. Thanks to all the parents and students who have already brought in seedlings. Hopefully we will be cooking and selling our produce very shortly. Congratulations to Year One/ Two for their effort, participation and great behaviour over at the Ag Plot last Friday. Top Job! Our cushions have been started, and will hopefully be finished in the upcoming weeks ready to be entered into the Swan Hill Regional Show. They are looking fantastic and thankyou to all mums who came in to help us and brought in bits and pieces for our lovely cushions. It most appreciated! Some other items that will be entered into the show will be handwriting and paintings. We will keep you posted about dates of the show. Students have been participating in a variety of maths activities and are showing great results in areas of learning such as length, addition and subtraction, multiplication and patterns and algebra. There has been lots of reading happening in Year One/ Two and buddy reading groups in the morning has proven very beneficial to our students. We have also included Guided Reading Groups into our day along with Accelerated Literacy, which sees the students having more of an opportunity to

develop their reading and writing skills. Students have done a great job of reading at home every night and thank you to all parents for help with bringing in reader diaries, folder and home readers. We will be starting our Music unit very shortly once our cushions have finished. Students will have the opportunity to play a variety of musical instruments in this unit. Year One/ Two were lucky enough to have two guest speakers, Miss Wait and Miss Crosswell, come into the classroom to talk about a celebration that they had been to, for our Human Society and It’s Environment unit ‘Celebrations’. We discussed their celebration and learned many things about Rio Carnivale and Baptisms. This was great to learn about diverse cultures and how they celebrate different occasions. A big thank you to all parents that brought in fruit to school. Again if you have any questions or would like to come in and hear some students read in the morning feel free to contact me at the school.

Learning about length the ‘hands on’ way.

Year 1/2 students decided to measure the length of the room, with Miss Hay! Year Three/Four Last week Three/Four welcomed new student Joszef into our school and classroom. Joszef is a keen soccer player and already making new friends. We hope Joszef and his family enjoy their time at Tooleybuc Central. We are eagerly making our way through our text ‘Refugees’ and the students began writing their own narrative last week. The students are trying hard to emulate the way the author; David Miller writes and in turn are using greater descriptive language and challenging the reader to think more about the key ideas and hidden messages that can be found in books. Year Three/Four are lucky enough to have Emily from the front Office and Mrs Ritchie working with them during this English time and during Mathematics time, Val has been an invaluable help and support for our students. Thank you very much ladies! This week during Health and Personal Development the students continued their learning of the human body and experienced concepts using the interactive whiteboard and specifically the Teaching and Learning Exchange (TaLe) site. There is a huge range of interactive activities for students to be involved with. Students are also able to access this site at home but will need their internet passwords to logon. http://www.taLe.com.au Definitely worth a look for

all students out there and there’s even a parent section! In Drama we are practising a play titled ‘Jasper’s Job’ which is about a little boy who is unsure of his role in the world so goes about trialling various jobs. We have most students in a speaking role and others who have opted for prop organisers. All students are very active in their individual roles and are aware that working together will ensure a higher level of achievement. We will be presenting this at our Primary Assembly later in the term. So far in Visual Arts we have explored using pencils and charcoal to draw with and learnt the range of ways we can demonstrate tone in these drawings, giving a 3D appearance. Last week we challenged ourselves with fruit and this week hard objects such as vases and jars. The students are eager and appear to enjoy the challenge and the consistent questions; What else could you do? How will you make it look more real? Show me what you can do with your pencil. They are showing perseverance and dedication which is really pleasing. Well done everyone. Our Project Wall is up and running which I am hoping the students and families will enjoy and find rewarding. Year Five/Six “Rowan of Rin” is an exciting book to read. Students are listening intently as the story is read and are participating in discussions highlighting many of the challenges faced by the group of characters on their quest. Students have highlighted nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs in the first paragraph of their copy of the study passage. They have examined adjectival phrases and have written sentences in which they had to write an adjectival phrase to describe a noun. Students have also examined independent and dependent clauses and written sentences containing both. Trying to model what happens with tectonic plates during an earthquake was a challenge in the classroom. Plasticine was required to be used but was not terribly effective. However, students were able to get an idea of the three ways that tectonic plates move during the course of an earthquake. The first of the PD/Health talks “About Us” was on Wednesday. These talks are aimed at students in Years 5 and 6 to provide information about puberty. Please discuss these talks with your child and answer any further questions that they may have. In PE this week, students spent time developing their skills in readiness for the Nyah Sports coming

up on September 3rd. Those students competing in the District Athletics carnival were able to make themselves more ready for the day. Students have displayed a keen interest in producing “Picasso” style artworks. Those students who completed theirs last week were interested in producing an animal in the same style. Remember, if you have any questions regarding your child’s learning, please come in and have a talk.

Smoke free cars A reminder that it is now against the law to smoke in a car with a child under the age of 16. Children are particularly susceptible to the negative health effects of passive smoking. Exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke by children can lead to an increased risk of asthma, lower respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis, coughing and wheezing.

A $250 on the spot fine applies to the driver and any passenger who breaks the law and this will be enforced by NSW Police. More information including fact sheets in community languages is available at: www.health.nsw.gov.au/publichealth/healthpromotion/tobacco/smoke_free_cars.asp For support to stop smoking call the Quit Line on: 13 78 48.

SYZYGY Students are invited to design a front page for this year’s Syzygy - the winner will be on the front cover. It can be a drawing, a photo or a painting. All entries have to be handed in to the library by the end of the term. The comp is open to all students from Kindergarten to Year Twelve.

Secondary Report Year 6/7 Transition Day Year Six students from around the area were invited to participate in a transition day that looked at the differences students could encounter when coming from primary school into secondary school. The idea of the day was to give these students a sample of the different subjects and teachers they would be having next year to ease the transition from primary to secondary life. The day started with a talk to the Principal Miss Wait about how the students felt about going into high school and what could be expected. Then it was straight into the day with a quick treasure hunt around the school trying to find the different secondary classroom locations. The students enthusiastically barrelled around helped by some secondary students that acted as mathematical gatekeepers. The first round of the day went to the purple team who showed that the old adage of slow and steady wins the race – with their strategy of answering accurately rather than quickly winning them the hunt. Students then experienced an Agricultural lesson. Here they all jumped in and weighed sheep and were able to discuss the importance of this activity to farmers. Then it was into the Connected Classroom for a video conference with players from the Sydney Swans who gave students lots to think about in regard to healthy eating habits and setting effective goals for the future.

Year Six students at the Ag Plot

Abbey had this lamb well under control. Lunch was prepared in the cooking room with some very helpful Year Twelve hospitality students. Special thanks go out to Jessie-Maree, Damon and Tamika who demonstrated the skills that would be required for the lesson and offered a helping hand to make sure everyone got a yummy stuffed potato and milkshake for lunch.

Rowena and Madison preparing the filling for their baked potato. After lunch Mr Parker demonstrated a variety of skills and techniques that would be used in the TAS room through the creation of spinning tops. The creativity of the students was evident and everyone

was disappointed when Mr Parker’s top won the spinning contest (everyone but Mr Parker that is). Overall the day was a huge success with the students thoroughly participating in all activities and enjoying the day. Thank you to Mrs McKindlay, Mr Wait, Mrs Morton, Mr Parker and Miss Wait for making the day such a success. We look forward to our next transition day in Term Four.

Mr Parker and John making spinning tops. Mock Interviews Years Ten, Eleven and Twelve were involved in a careers day that helped to prepare them for life beyond school. This day was held at the club with a number of guests invited to make presentations on how our students can succeed beyond school. As a follow up to this day Year Ten were involved in a mock interview – which allowed them to demonstrate their capacity to prepare for a job interview. Both activities were a success with students gaining valuable strategies for when they enter the workforce. What’s happening in our Mathematics classrooms? Mathematicians in Year Seven have finished the topic of probability – Luke Harding is to be particularly commended for his exam result scoring an 88 out of a possible 94! Well done to Luke. We have now moved on and are working on the number plane. Our map reading skills have been tested and now we are learning how to plot and find co-ordinates on the number plane. Year Eight have shown they can solve questions involving Pythagoras’ theorem but some would rather not solve any that involve problems! Our new topic is angles; an important part of this topic is examining how we can use this information in real world applications. The number plane is still a focus in the Year Nine mathematics classroom. Our mathematicians have

constructed lines, used table of values to find the gradient and discovered a great deal about interval lengths, distances, midpoints and gradients. Coming up is our topic test to prove just how proficient we have become with this topic. Year Ten are being welcomed to the real world. The new assessment task for the consumer arithmetic topic will see our Year Ten students take on adult personas and be required to budget like an adult. Important decisions will have to be made – What kind of job will I have? How will I pay for the children’s school fees? How much tax am I paying? I’m sure the end results will make for interesting reading. Finance is still the order of the day in Year Eleven. Taxation is the focus of the moment – not how to avoid paying it but how much we will have to pay and how to calculate using tax tables. Year Seven and Eight Science Students have nearly finished their current topic on matter and chemical reactions. We should finish this unit and have a topic test in Week Six. Students are also conducting an investigation on how salt water affects rust. This is formal practical report for this unit and will contribute towards their assessment marks. Our next unit will revise cells and look at Body Systems. Year Ten Science Year Ten Science students are working on Genetics and Evolution. The students have been asked to discuss some of the issue associated with genetics at home to get another opinion. It would be great if parents could discuss their point of view with their child.

Primary Industries Students are currently working on their feedlot trial

with lambs to investigate the benefits of feeding lambs grain. This is an important part of the course required to complete all modules for their certificate

II in Primary Industries.

Agriculture Year Twelve students should be busily preparing for their exams. We are about to finalise our final

unit on animal management in preparation for their HSC. WE are currently trying to promote careers in

this field. Students will have the opportunity to attend a presentation at Doshun and Medlin on Tuesday 25th August at 6pm. We will transport

students to the event as it will inform students of the positions available once they have completed

Year Twelve.

CAREER NEWS Once again a very busy two weeks in the Careers area. Students in Years Ten to Twelve attended a Career Information Day at the Tooleybuc Sporting Club and gained lots of valuable information from Sunraysia TAFE, Murray Mallee Training Company and Employment Works. Thank you to the presenters and the Sporting Club for hosting us. Students in Year Ten then completed a mock interview which required them writing an application letter for their chosen job and presenting this with their resume to an interview panel of three members. All students gained valuable skills in dressing and presenting themselves for an interview, in addition they gained confidence and experience in the interviewing process. Well done Year Ten.

Senior students listened intently to the presenters at the Careers Pathway Day.

Jake and Frankie practise their resuscitation skills at the Careers Pathway Day.

Year Twelve Year Twelve should be busy preparing themselves for their pathway from school. Four Year Twelve students, Tim, Ryan, Jessie-Maree and James attended the TIS (Tertiary Information Session) tour in Swan Hill where they gained lots of information on TAFE, Universities and colleges and the pathways they offer. Well done Tim, Ryan, James and Jessie-Maree for attending. Mrs Morton and Mr Wait also attended the Beyond Year Twelve night which gave invaluable information on a huge range of options and help which is available for students when they complete Year Twelve. Students have all been given Centrelink pamphlets and TAFE information. It is hoped parents are taking the time to discuss students pathways and options as the end of schooling is almost upon Year Twelves. Open Days Coming Soon Sun 23 Aug- Box Hill TAFE; Deakin Uni

Other Career Information Interested in Transport / Logistics The transport industry in Victoria employs 238,000 people and look for people who want a long term career. TDT Victoria offers twenty Year Twelve students the ‘Transport and Logistics Cadetship’ program for positions in Melbourne/ Shepparton/ Geelong and regional Victoria. Be employed by companies in transport, logistics, manufacturing and food processing and complete the Diploma of Logistics Applications and resume to Mrs Kerri Langes, TDT Victoria 173 Roden St, West Melbourne, 3003 or check out at www.tdtvictoria.org.au Deferring at Deakin Deakin has introduced a policy of deferring study for up to 24 months instead of 12 months and it is hoped other universities shall follow. This means you can postpone your studies and still retain your place at the University. Work Experience / Work Placement During Week Six, August 31st to September 4th many of our Year Ten and Eleven students shall be undertaking Work Experience and Work Placement. All students should now have made contact with their employer, organised transport, have all forms signed and follow procedures given to them. Work Experience provides students with a wonderful opportunity to learn about the world of

work, develop focus and goals for future learning and develop confidence and self esteem. Work placement allows students to gain all of the mentioned skills in addition to developing the competencies associated with their VET course of study. Mock Interviews At first I thought the Mock Interviews would be really nerve wracking and scary but when I got called over to the panel and met Lee for the hundredth time and the rest of the panel I found it was quite easy to answer the questions they asked and I felt really comfortable talking to them. The three panel judges were wonderful, they treated it like a real interview and they gave me some great feedback; like what needed some work and what were some good strengths. I think the Mock Interview program was a really good experience and I ended up really enjoying it. Everyone learnt a lot. By Sarah Dilges

Sarah at her Mock Interview with Lee McNab, Carole Smith and Jenny Arblaster At the start while I was waiting for my interview I felt really nervous. Once I met the panel the interview seemed to go really quickly. They asked me about myself, what I’m good at, my weaknesses and why I wanted to become an apprentice welder. I learnt a lot from this experience. By Dylan Westerdale

Dylan at his Mock Interview with Neve Denham, Malcolm McNab and Phyllis Ball.

On Tuesday 18th August I attended a Mock Interview at the Tooleybuc Sporting Club. At first I was nervous but after meeting the panel everything went smoothly. They asked me on a range of questions involving my chosen career. I received great feed back, incredible advice and a small taste of how a future interview will run. It was a valuable experience that will help me in a future interview.

Head Lice Head Lice are about again. Please check your child’s hair and if we work diligently we shall banish them. Tips for tackling kids head lice Use hair conditioner and a fine head lice comb. Apply conditioner to the hair and comb through

with a wide-toothed comb to remove the tangles. Then use a fine metal lice comb to remove the

lice and pull the nits off the hair. The conditioner helps slow down the louse and

makes it easier to comb out. For more information go to the “Nitbusters” website www.health.nsw.gov.au/headlice/

Don’t let healthy habits slip It is now half way through the school year and the mornings are cold and dark. However, don’t make this an excuse to start letting healthy habits slip. It may  be  tempting  to  stay  in  bed  for  longer  and simply  throw  some  packaged  snacks  in  your child’s  lunch box due  to  then not having enough time to prepare  lunch. You can avoid this trap by always  having  fresh  fruit  and  vegetables  in  the fridge to send along to school with your child for recess.  Is  it  really any harder opening  the crisper draw  and  removing  a  piece  of  fruit  than  it  is opening  the cupboard and grabbing a muesli bar and  packet  of  chips?  Prepare  your  child’s  lunch the  night  before  so  it’s  all  ready  to  go  in  the morning. Your child’s physical activity may also decrease  in winter  as  it  gets  dark  early  and may  be  raining. Encourage  your  children  to play outside  as  soon as  they  come  home  from  school,  before  it  gets dark. Limit screen time (television, computer and console  use)  to  when  it  is  dark  only.  Also, encourage  your  children  to walk  to/from  school whenever  it  is  fine.  You may need  to drive  your child  one  direction  if  it’s  raining,  but  any  use  of active transport is better than none!

Buy fruits and vegetables that are in season. They will have more nutrients, and be cheaper too! Winter is a great time for apples, bananas, broccoli, cauliflower and pumpkin, just to name a few!
