Dr. Given's High School Engineering Class Builds Foxhole Radios

During World War II, Americanprisoners craved informationabout the progress of the war. Enterprising radio men were ableto create a radio using scrapwire, a pencil, and a razor bladeto keep the prisoners informed. The High School Engineeringclass of Dr. Givens replicatedthese feats and made what isknown as foxhole radios. The first step was for the classto learn how radio was producedand how radio receivers worked. Then, the students went to work. The radio-receiving coils were created bywinding 120 turns of insulated magnet wire on empty toilet paper rolls. Theradio signal from the coil was demodulated using a very crude diode made ofa safety pin, a blued (heat-treated) razor blade, and the stub-end of a carbonpencil.

The students went outside, strung up a long wire for an antenna, grounded tothe outside perimeter fence of the school and listened to local radio stations.

community and in our school. In an effort toreduce the risk of transmission, your child may

be sent home if presenting with flu-likesymptoms in the clinic. This may or may not

include a fever.

As you know, the flu is quickly spread fromperson to person. Please do not send yourchild to school if they are displaying any

symptoms of being sick. Symptoms of the fluinclude fever, cough, sore throat, a runny orstuffy nose, body aches, headache, and justfeeling weak. Some may vomit or have

diarrhea. Remember that just because they arenot running a fever, does not mean they are notsick. You know your child best so we rely onyou as a parent to make that judgment call and

not expose the other children or staff.

the outside perimeter fence of the school and listened to local radio stations. The stations could be tuned by moving a slide across the top of the coil. Thesignal proved to be quite faint as there is no amplification and no battery tothe device. The entire system is powered by the radio signal itself. The next innovation was to replace the razor blade with a crystal of galena(lead sulfide). The crystal improved the signal and the radio stations came instronger. This improvement was the way the first commercial radios worked. Once the students got those two approaches working, they were given acommercial diode for a demodulator which then made it possible to receivethe signals with much more strength. Using these techniques, onlyamplitude-modulated (AM) signals can be detected.

Nurturing the Nest POP Parent Columnby Megan Krizan

Noticing... We have amazing children, don't we? Eachone is this special, unique individual who isconstantly growing and changing andBECOMING. I was just noticing the other dayhow my almost 9 year old has suddenly foundsome things that she is really interested in andpassionate about. They are becoming part ofher identity. She is working hard at thesethings, and though she doesn't always getthem right, she doesn't give up. Because ofthis, she is constantly getting better. WOW. Asa parent, I love seeing this, and it makes meproud. I want to support her and encourage her, but Idon't want to get in her way. Unfortunately, asparents, we have a tendency to get in the way. We see the beginnings of aninterest or talent in our children and we want to see it grow so we startpointing out how good they are or start rewarding them for it. Or maybe wewant our children to show more interest in something so we do the samething. I do not want to do this to my daughter! Because right now hermotivation doesn't come from me, and I don't want it to. If I pour a ton of"good jobs" or rewards all over her then I suddenly make it about me, and Irob her of the joy of finding out what it is like to do something simply becauseshe loves to do it. In fact, there have been multiple studies that show thatpraise and rewards may increase external motivation for a short time, but inthe long term they decrease internal motivation. Thus, when the rewards andpraise aren't there then the interest is gone, too. Or there is just the pressureto please others, but the fun has gone. I don't want that! So how do I provide encouragement for my daughter without making it aboutme? I just keep on noticing, and tell her what I see: "Hey Love, I noticed youpracticed three times today all on your own. You must be enjoying that." "Wow, all that effort and you are learning so quickly." "Ooo, that one istough. You seem determined to figure it out." "You are really proud ofyourself." "Looks like you are having fun." "I love watching you do somethingyou love." See, I get to be a part of this amazing phase that she is going through, but Ilet it belong to her. She gets the satisfaction of knowing that I am noticing herworld and that I care about her, no strings attached. That is what she reallyneeds from me. So, what if you are struggling with a child who is lacking motivation? (I have

been there, too.) How do you encourage him or her to find a passion, to putin some effort, to care? Well, there is encouragement for that, too, and we

A Message From Moms in Prayer

This week's praise is "God is the miracleworker." Definition: One who performs unexplainableand supernatural acts, physical power, force, might, ability, efficacy, energy, meaning (b) plur:powerful deeds, deeds showing (physical)power, marvelous works. Scriptures: 1 Chronicles 16:8-12;; Psalm 77:11-14;; Jeremiah 32:30 Prayer: May________ remember the deeds ofthe LORD;; may he/she remember Your miracleslong ago. May he/she meditate on Your worksand consider all Your might deeds. From Psalm77:11-12 Thoughts: The word remember in Greek meansso much more than how we use the wordremember today. Here is the definition fromStrong's - properly, recall, bring to mind, remindoneself actively (purposefully);; to remember, have in mind, "be mindful of The high levelof personal (self) involvementand personal interest motivating thisremembering accounts for why it is always inthe Greek middle voice.] Today we use remember as just a simplerecollection of something. For example, "I remember when bell bottoms were in style." When the word remember was used in the Bibleit meant far more than that. It meant to act onwhat you recall. Get involved and live accordingto what you remember. How different would ourlives be if when we remember how God partedthe Red Sea so the Israelites could pass on dryground we don't just think "Wow that was cool." How about if we think instead that that sameGod is still alive today and performingmiracles(showing his power) today. Weshould strive to live boldly andactively remember. God empowersevery believer with the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:8 - But ye shall receive power, after thatthe Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shallbe witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and inall Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto theuttermost part of the earth Please send us your joys and concerns! "Lake Superior" by Anthony Holmgren

Curt's Corner CONTENTMENT, CHARACTER OR

COMFORT?

By Curt Riske POPCS School Life Chaplain

"There is great gain in Godliness withcontentment;; for we brought nothing into thisworld and we can take nothing out of it." ITimothy 6:6-7

What is godliness with contentment? It beginswith knowing who you are and what you are inrelation to your God. God has been involved inyour life even before you were born. It is He whoformed you in your mother's womb and gifted youwith every fabric of your being. In your baptism,He claimed you as His very own, giving you His

own name, membership in His family, the perfection of Christ through theforgiveness of sins and the assurance of an everlasting home in heaven.

Knowing who you are in Christ and that He has a plan and future for youbrings ease of mind and satisfaction into your life. Contentment is not a lackof ambition in life for God's Word assures you that you can do all thingsthrough Christ who strengthens you. It is not a lack of goals. Paul remindsus to press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called youheavenward in Christ Jesus. Contentment means your happiness does notdepend on your circumstances. Again Paul tells us in Philippians 4:12-13 "Iknow what it is to be in need and I know what it is to have plenty. I havelearned the secret of being content in any and every circumstance whetherwell fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everythingthrough Him who gives me strength."

Because you have an adversary and a sinful nature, you are tempted to bediscontented-not satisfied with who or what you are or with what you have. You are tempted to always want more. One way to eliminate discontent inyour life is to get rid of the cause-comparing. We have a tendency tocompare everything-houses, schools, cars, jobs, grades, clothes, appearances, skills and abilities. When you compare you usually develop acertain sense of discontent. So stop comparing! Remember that Goduniquely created you and everyone. Even though sin and the forces of evilhave flawed your life and the world in which you live, God has provided you

with everything you need to accomplish His purpose for your life. He canand will do much more for and through you than you can think or evenimagine.

imagine.

Everything you are and have is a gift of God. You are simply a manager, asteward of what God gives to use for your benefit and His glory while you arehere on this earth. When it seems that God doesn't care or that He constantlycloses doors for you, be assured that He does care and that He will opennew doors for you. God is much more interested in your future and yourcharacter than He is in your comfort.

Commit your life unto the Lord, trust Him for direction and guidance and beassured that He will accomplish His purpose for you!
