ON-TIME GRADUATION GOAL:RIT will promote a culture of on-time graduation for undergraduate students.

ON-TIME GRADUATION STRATEGIES:1. Campaign for a culture of on-time graduation:RIT will adopt a campaign and concerted effort toward an on-time graduation culture. This campaign will be vigorously touted and directed by senior administrative and academic leadership. The campaign will be a component of marketing RIT to prospective students and the compact between students and RIT will be fulfilled by supporting principles, policies and practice.

2. Planning (The RIT Compact or the RIT Advantage):Undergraduate students will work in partnership with the university to build a comprehensive, individualized plan addressing multiple dimensions of the college experience (curricular, co-curricular, financial, engagement, employment, career, etc.), which will be a unique plan, called The RIT Compact. Development of the plan will be initiated at the beginning of each student’s RIT experience, and will evolve as a student progresses toward graduation.

3. Policies and Procedures:Identify RIT policies, procedures, and practices that directly or indirectly support or impede progress towards degree completion. Update or revise to help promote on-time graduation and eliminate barriers to degree completion, and build a “campaign” to help the university consistently communicate to our students RIT’s expectations of moving through with an entering cohort class and graduating on time.

CURRICULUM AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT GOAL #1:All RIT students (100%) in every program will have an experiential learning experience relevant to their degree program prior to graduation. Experiential learning may include coop, internship, research, field experience, clinical experience or an opportunity to study abroad in addition to a senior capstone experience.

CURRICULUM AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT STRATEGY #1:1a. Every RIT student will be required to complete a multidisciplinary capstone project/experience during their final year that includes service to the community and instruction from RIT faculty.1b. Every RIT program will develop a required experiential learning experience for their students.

CURRICULUM AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT GOAL #2:All colleges at RIT will expand or strengthen opportunities for undergraduate students by providing a flexible, undeclared program option to increase opportunities for undergraduate learning.

CURRICULUM AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT STRATEGY #2:2a. General education courses will be broad-based, flexible and provide students with the flexibility and opportunity to take courses outside their major/college.2b. Academic advisors will be trained to understand all academic areas across the university to assist students in curricular flexibility.2c. RIT will market both the curricular rigor and flexibility to incoming students, with a focus on the option to return to RIT in the future for life-long learning.

CURRICULUM AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT GOAL #3:Each college at RIT would be required to provide a “checkpoint” assessment to all students mid-way through their progress in a particular academic program, most often at the end of the 2nd year and after having completed a portion of their experiential learning.

CURRICULUM AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT STRATEGY #3:3a. Require all faculty to utilize MyCourses in order to provide students with ongoing feedback and standardization of how grades are reported.3b. Provide students with centralized RIT-provided support online and offline for “soft skills” development. This would include but would not be limited to continued development of the writing center, collaboration with Student Affairs regarding programing and support, tutoring in a broader variety of fields, online databases of courses such as Lynda.com and free MOOCs.

CURRICULUM AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT STRATEGY #3 Continued:

3c. Co-curricular transcript: See “Jungle Gym / Co-Curricular Strategies” on following slide.3d. Provide a system for faculty in addition to final grades and early alerts, where comments about a student’s progress in soft skills may also be recorded and added to the co-curricular transcript. For instance, if a student shows exceptional leadership skills in a group project, a faculty member may record this on the students co-curricular transcript.3e. Promote the RIT Advantage for ALL courses including general education courses. Faculty, staff and especially advisors would help students understand how each course or co-curricular experience will help them advance their academic progress as well as improve and satisfy their soft skill development/requirement.

CO-CURRICULAR GOAL (JUNGLE GYM):The RIT experience will engage and transform its students for a lifetime of professional and personal growth and success.

CO-CURRICULAR STRATEGY (JUNGLE GYM):Develop a multifaceted co-curricular transcript/portfolio that will document students’ engagement and soft skill development. The “Jungle Gym” concept purposefully facilitates and communicates a unique experiential learning plan derived from an array of in-class/out-of-class assignments; extracurricular opportunities; and project-based soft skill development activities.
