WOOD-FIRED PIZZAS This week we are having pizza parties to celebrate the end of term. We will be firing up the wood-fired pizza oven down in the garden on Wednesday and Thursday to cook our pizzas. BAROOGA WINTER MARKET Last Saturday, 22nd June, we held a very successful market stall at the Barooga Winter Market, raising over $800 to help fund the kitchen garden program in our school. It was a lovely day and the Barooga Advancement Group is to be congratulated for holding such an enjoyable and well-organised event in Barooga. The market was a great fun day for the whole family. Thank you to all the wonderful parents and grandparents who baked delicious goods for the children to sell. The baked goods were extremely popular and we sold all our stock. The children had made soups, lemon butter and other preserves to sell at the market in class and these were also popular. Thanks to Alan McCluskey, Daryl Bird and John McCabe for helping us to set up and pack up at the end of the day. Thank you to Tracy McCluskey, Amy Paroissien and Gwen Hyde for helping me to supervise the children. And the biggest thanks go to our wonderful students; Eliza Bayliss, Marlie Noonan, Alex Woodhead, Will Brooks, Jasmine Houzaife-Grinter, Claudia Leighton-Daly, Lily Brooks, Mazzi Post, Maddison Lewin-Howard, Indi Frazer, Jordan Lewin-Howard, Noah Frazer, Tyson O’Shea, Cashen Nolan, Kaylum Tempo, Jai Nolan, Isobella Stillard, Phoebe Murdoch and Grace Stillard. These children represented their school with confidence. Their manners and conversation with customers was exemplary as were their maths skills when adding the total of what they had sold then needing to work out the change. I was very proud of them all. The next Barooga Four Seasons Market will be on Saturday, 21st September. ART IN THE GARDEN The children are currently working on some projects in the garden to help brighten it up and add some colour. Projects include

∗ making a hopscotch game for the children to play ∗ painting recycled bins to use as plant pots ∗ painting a garden mural on the concrete pipes ∗ painting watering can signs to label plants for harvest in the garden ∗ spray painting bike wheels to make a garden trellis

Year 4/5 will have had a painting day in the garden today and Year 5/6 will have their turn on Thursday. The children need to wear old clothes to paint. STEPHANIE ALEXANDER KITCHEN GARDEN FOUNDATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Last Friday, Tracy and I attended training in Melbourne at the Foundation’s Learning Centre in Collingwood. The SAKGF always provide us with excellent training and this time was no different. Tracy attended a Kitchen Specialist Forum and learnt to bake bread with the staff of Phillipa’s Bakery. I attended hands-on workshops on growing gourmet mushroom, willow weaving and irrigation. The keynote speaker was Prue Gill, an ex-teacher, program volunteer and SAKGF board member. She spoke on the program’s role in social change and helping our students to take control of their future. Her speech was very inspiring.

THANK YOU

∗ Thank you to Jason Brooks for offering to pick up our new greenhouse frames to rebuild the entrance arbour.

∗ Thank you to Peter Byham for donating more plants. If anyone is interested in buying any, please see me at school. All of our plants sell for $2 each.

CAN YOU HELP US? We are looking for the following items. Please contact the school if you are able to help us. ∗ Empty metal olive oil tins, or similar

interesting containers, for the children to turn into herb plant pots. Any tins can be brought to my room.

∗ Milk bottle lids (without any print on them, please).

∗ Large pots, old metal garbage bins, plastic drums etc.

∗ Bicycle wheels to make a trellis. (The Year 5/6 children have started work on this project but we can keep adding more wheels to the structure.)

∗ Metal tins with lids such as baby formula tins to use for a craft activity.

P&C News As you are all aware the P & C together with our school staff and administration, especially Nicky Bird, worked over a long period of time that resulted in us being accepted into the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. This project forms part of the school’s educational and associated activities program that enables all of our student body to participate in a variety of interesting and exciting projects that embraces and engages the student. Our school is extremely proud to have been selected in this program and its development over the past few years will ensure that it remains as a legacy to all students who attend our great School. Like most extra activities the school subsidised the costs involved as part of the curriculum. This year we needed to ask that an annual contribution be attributed to offset some of the costs for the Kitchen Garden Program. We are fortunate that this is the only major contribution that is requested from our student body. There are real concerns that some of these contributions remain unpaid and after discussions with our principal the school is prepared to allow payments to be spread over the school year to assist those families who are not in a position to pay it all at once. The students can continue to participate in the program but with the continuing rising costs we need to cover the annual contribution of $80.00 per student so all of our kids can enjoy the fruits of their labour so to speak. If you have issues regarding how the contribution is structured please discuss with Mr Francis or Mrs Bird. Cheers and thanks, Andrew Leighton-Daly President Barooga Public School P&C
