Study Week News June 2014

On Thursday night, we had an International Farewell Dinner. The dinner theme was "Thanksgiving." I was a bit sceptical about how the Aussies would do Thanksgiving, but you exceeded my expectations. Kate put a lot of work in to get the cafe looking this amazing! We had some live entertainment from the Indian Chief Hashtag Benwatson and they showed a slideshow of pictures of us international students throughout the dinner. I promised myself I wouldn't cry, but Stacey wouldn't stop looking at me, and Jared had to message me "Have fun at the dinner <3" and the floodgates were open.

The two food tests I implemented for Australia to pass Thanksgiving were corn and pumpkin pie. I will admit, it was no "home-grown Amish sweetcorn" like I get back home from the cute Amish boy... but it was still pretty good! And most of my Aus friends had never had pumpkin pie. Although it was square, and obviously not homemade, it was still delicious! And you get an A+ on presentation!

Health fact sheet

Think about this the next time you’re out or having drinks... • Alcohol dehydrates the body and dries out your skin, which can lead to premature aging,

blotchy skin and puffiness. Forgetting to take your make-up off after a big night out can also lead to acne and pimples.

• Alcohol is very high in calories—just two shots of vodka contain the same amount of kilojoules as a hamburger! If you drink too much too often, don’t be surprised if the number on the scale starts to climb!

• More worryingly, alcohol increase the risk of type two diabetes, liver dis-ease and mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

• Heavy consumption of alcohol increases your risk of cancer. Alcohol contributes to 4% of all cancer diagnoses and heavy drinking increase the risk of breast cancer in women.

• Guys you don’t miss out either! Men are twice as likely to become de-pendent on alcohol than women. Drinking too much also affects your sexual performance, libido and sperm quality which is not going to win over the ladies any time soon! Alcohol also affects the way your liver stores and processes fat, which can lead to increased breast tissue, aka man boobs!

Recipe of the Week

Banana Bread Best served fresh from the oven!! Ingredients

1 3/4 cups (260g) plain flour

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

2/3 firmly packed cup (150g) dark brown sugar

100g walnut crumbs (see note) or chopped walnuts

3 large over-ripe bananas

2 large eggs, lightly whisked

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

100g unsalted butter, melted, cooled Method 1. Preheat the oven to 175°C. Lightly grease an 11cm x 22cm loaf pan and line base and 2 long sides with a sheet of baking paper, leaving 2cm overhanging. 2. Sift flour, cinnamon, baking powder, soda and 1/2 teaspoon salt into a bowl with the brown sugar, then add the nuts. 3. In a separate bowl, mash the bananas with a fork or potato masher, then stir in the eggs, vanilla extract and cooled melted butter. Using a rubber spatula or wooden spoon, fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until they're just combined - don't over mix. 4. Scrape cake batter into prepared pan. Place in the oven and bake for 1 hour or until golden brown and a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Cool the loaf in pan 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool. Cut into 8-10 slices.
