NATIONAL CONSISTENCY COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH A
DISABILITY
Our school is participating in the collection of nationally consistent data on school students
with a disability. We will be collecting information available in the school about the support
that is being provided to students with a disability. This data will be provided to the Australian
Government from all NSW public schools in a confidential manner which will ensure privacy
and confidentiality of all students. The level of support for these children will differ greatly
from child to child and the level of adjustment is what we are focussing on. Please contact
Mrs Dorahy if you would like more information or go to the Australian Government
Department of Education http://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-data-school-students-
disability

LIFE SKILLS ~Week 7~ Taking Healthy Risks, strength and courage Change is a constant in each of our lives. Children all go through many transitions but everyone processes experiences in their own unique ways. Some transitions might be thought to be exciting or bring happiness (like moving on to a secondary school) but for some, change can be very frightening and can increase feelings of anxiety, fear or confusion. Despite this, transitions are experiences that yield learning and development and are important and necessary for everyone to experience. The Tools for Transition program was developed to assist children with these changes by providing them with tools that they can confidently draw upon to help them as they process these changes with more ease. This week we discussed healthy risks and how we can use it as a tool to build our courage to try new things and even make new friends. This week students were taught how we can access our breath to help us move through challenging situations.
Additionally, students discussed strength and why it is important to have both inner and outer strength. Students explored what inner strength is and how building courage and confidence help us in our lives. In Unit Two, students are encouraged to reflect on how using inner strength to take healthy risks can impact not only themselves but also their classmates, other students, their family and community members. Students learnt more about how mindfulness research has shown that techniques can be used to help train our brains to be more focused and help us to be more mindful, and contributing members in our community. Parents/Carers: Ask your child what is a ‘healthy risk’ they have taken this week? Family Self-care tip : remind yourself and everyone in your family that you are all doing your best in any given moment! Take a ‘healthy risk’ this week and try out a new recipe for dinner. Final Week~ Leadership and gratitude This was the final week of our Tools for Transition program. Students were excited to have a celebration to acknowledge all the hard work and wonderful tools they have learnt. In the final week, students delved into what is leadership and how they can be mindful leaders every day. Students discussed: Who are the leaders in our lives and what is it about them that makes them good leaders? Students were invited to take on leadership roles in the class and practise the skills they believe make a good leader. To conclude the program students explored the importance of having an attitude of gratitude and why it is so beneficial for us to practise this every day. Students learnt that practising gratitude daily actually increases our levels of happiness. They were encouraged to share with the class something they were grateful for whether it be a person, a thing or an experience. To conclude Unit Two students explored the importance of having an attitude of gratitude and why it is so beneficial for us to practise every day. Students learned that practising gratitude daily actually increases our levels of happiness and were encouraged to continue to choose to be grateful for all they have in their lives. Parents/Carers: Ask your child one thing they are most grateful for. Ask them to lead the family in something this week.
Family Self-care tip : At dinner tonight say one thing you are grateful for.
Final note: Through completing the Life Skills Group program: Tools for Transition, students have become increasingly aware of important values such as, respect, honesty, confidence and teamwork. The participants have demonstrated an understanding of body awareness, self-awareness, self regulation, self acceptance and problem solving skills. Students have been challenged individually and as a class and have had opportunities to develop their skills of cooperation through many partner, group and class opportunities. Students have built up a toolkit of coping strategies and experiences and will be able to apply them in the future when faced with challenges and changes. We know the students who participate in the Life Skills Group program are better trained to deal with life’s challenges, and in turn, maintain greater levels of happiness and confidence. As a parent or carer you may find it helpful to continue to refer back to some of Life Skills Group techniques when a difficult life situation surfaces to remind
students of their tools. Our hope is that your child carries these skills with them to utilise when ever they need. Life Skills Group is grateful to have been a part of your child’s Life Skills experience and have thoroughly enjoyed having each and every one of the children in our class. Each individual student adds something special to the class dynamic and it has been wonderful to see their skills and confidence grow!
B KINDER DAY
Our B Kinder day last Friday was a wonderful day to focus on being a better person and
being kind to someone. The students wrote special cards with thoughts to share. The SRC
did a great job leading the day.
FYI VISIBLE LEARNING FOCUS - FEEDBACK
Our teachers are focusing on feedback as part of their Visible Learning ongoing training.
Teachers, students and peers are focusing on feedback. We are developing the skill to give
and receive feedback to improve performance. In each lesson students are given a learning
intention and a success criteria. There is a set focus each lesson. If the focus in their writing
lesson is paragraphs, then spelling, punctuation etc are not marked. Please take this into
account when reflecting on your child’s work.
PREMIER’S SPELLING BEE The school Spelling Bee will be held in week 2 Term 3. Stage 3 will compete on Monday 29 July at 1pm and Stage 2 will compete on Wednesday 31 July at 1pm. Class Spelling Bees will be held before the end of Term 2.
You can access the word lists at The Premier’s Spelling Bee Wordlists
Due to copyright restrictions, you can access these lists by entering the password which is available from your child's class teacher. Children are encouraged to access the word lists and practise their spelling at home. Mrs Joyce
