    This Weeks Journal of Gratitude:

Thank you to a very kind D15 bus driver (name unknown)who, upon discovering one of our students had left their

lunch behind on their seat, drove her bus back to ourschool so that child wouldnt be hungry. STV appreciates

this persons random act of kindness.

Congratulations to the Fourth Graders for winning an out-of-uniform day last Thursday by bringing in the most canson Octobers Two Can Tuesday. On behalf of the STV

Food Pantry, thank you to everyone who contributed.

Happy Bosss Day (October 16) to Lisa Ryan (andFather Tom!) from the faculty at STV School.

A belated thank you to Beth Matejevic for training the

faculty on the use of EpiPens.

Thank you, Mike McGarvey (Tee Shirt Guru), for

coordinating, marketing, and ordering all the 50th tee

    shirts and cross country shirts.

    Please Welcome

4th and 5th Graders: dont forget to bring your bikes to school on Monday,

    October 21

or else you will not be able to join Mrs. Brinkman and your teachers on the field trip. Parents, for the

safety of our children lined up outside, please dont drive around the back in the morning. Park

your car in front of the school and have your student walk the bike around to the back and lock it

up. Thank you for your cooperation.

    Dine-n-Share Update

Thank you to the 48 families who dined at Panera in Deer Park last month. Because more than

$1000 was spent by these families, we qualified for 20% of the proceeds (instead of only 15%).

    September proceeds: $204.30

Dont forget our next Dine-N-Share tomorrow, October 17 from 3:00 pm 10:00 pm! Come eat

dinner at (or take-out food from) Buona Beef in Rolling Meadows 1420 Golf Road. A percent of

your sale comes back to STV School. Look for your flyer TODAY in your Family Envelope! Any

    questions? Call Suzie at 847-903-1531.

    Procedural Update

As many of you know, our newsletter is posted on the school web site. Pfshing programs collect

email addresses off of our site, possibly leading to an increase in unwanted spam for the

addressees. Therefore the office will be more conservative when it comes to printing

families/volunteers personal email addresses in future newsletters. Please refer to your family

directory for the addresses you require. In the event the directory is incorrect or your email is not

going through, the school office will help. The office appreciates your understanding.

    Attention Chess Wizards

November 20 is an Early Dismissal, so there will be no chess that day. The office is in the process of

arranging a make-up day, tentatively November 6 (there is no Lego Club scheduled, so there

shouldnt be a conflict). Once the office hears back, well confirm the change in a newsletter

and add it to the school calendars.

Early Bird Discount for Yearbook Orders

Color Portraits, our photographer, is partnering with a new publisher this year, Tree Ring.

Why Tree Ring?Well, so far their customer service has been excellent. If you place your order by

October 31, youll get a 10% discount (the books wont be distributed until the final week or two

of school no instant gratification here - but this discount wasnt offered in the past, and the

option to take it or not is yours). You must register with the web site and place your order online.

All yearbook orders must be placed online before the end of March (the school will not be

taking orders directly or collecting payments). Tree Ring will plant a tree for every book ordered.

Why Must I Register Just to Order a Book?Well, here is one more bonus from Tree Ring: each

yearbook comes with a free, individually customizable, full-color two-page spread. Additional

personal pages can be ordered for $3.99 per two-page spread. Completion of these pages is

optional and intended to be fun. It is not meant to be an additional burden on families. So if

you dont care to customize your pages, dont have time, or run out of time, then a generic

two-page collage, prepared by the yearbook editors, will be placed in your book instead. Either

way youll get two extra pages at no additional cost. Order your book now and decide later

whether or not you want to customize your pages.

What is new from the old yearbook? This publisher does not offer the option to personalize the

covers of the yearbooks with each students photograph as in the past. However, youll have

your two+ pages inside to load up with photos of your student(s) and their family/friends. The

price is similar and reasonable. At $22.09 (before 10/31) and $24.54 (11/1 through 3/31/14), this

years price falls between last years generic cover price and photo cover price.

How do I customize my pages? The ability to design your pages becomes available to you after youregister online. Write down your login and password as you will need it to go back and edit your

pages later (they dont have to be completed at one sitting). Customization can be done

online from any computer with an internet connection. There is no software to download, but

be prepared to upload the photos you plan to use from your computer, Facebook, or Flickr. An

online tutorial is available if you need help (or just want to know what youre in for). There is a

default template already posted, but you can move things around, resize, recolor, add (or

subtract) photos, text, background graphics, etc. The deadline to complete the customization

of your pages will be April 4, 2014, regardless of when you place your order. The yearbook

editors can keep track of your progress on their dashboard, and offer reminders and

assistance as needed. All customized pages must be Catholic-school appropriate, and shall notviolate any copyright laws. Make it a fun family project.

How do I get started? There is no hurry, unless you choose to take advantage of the 10% early bird

discount before 10/31. Personalization deadline is April 4th. These are firm deadlines. Please

plan accordingly. Reminders will appear in future newsletters, and help with the customization

can be provided to those who need it.

Thursday, October 17: St. Gilbert at STV 7th grade at 8:00 pm (7th

grade is playing two that night)

October 21 - 27 is volleyball playoffs week! We wish our 7th and 8th

graders good luck in hopefully coming together as a team, using all

the skills their coaches have taught them over the past two months,

and playing incredibly well to extend their seasons.

    Cross Country

Congratulations to Conor and Johnny for qualifying for the State meet

in Bloomington next weekend. Conor took 2nd place, running a

blazing 11:45 for two miles (only missing first place by 4 seconds)

followed by Johnny in 8th place with a 12:08!!!! Not bad for a field of

72 runners. Paige got a stitch in her side so had a bit of a tough run -

but she stuck with it. She wanted to make sure to let Coach Murphy

know that she did some pretty awesome mall walking during part of

the race. Now get ready for PHS Cross Country!!!

Thanks so much to our volunteers - Tom Smithe, Anne Krzoska, Katie

    McGarvey, and Kathy McGarvey.

    Basketball Commissioner Needed!

The STV sports program is in need of a girls basketball commissioner. This could be either a mom

or dad who loves being around the gym and the athletes to supervise evening use of the gym on

game nights. The commissioner is responsible for setting up and putting away equipment, chairs,

and bleachers on girls game nights, and possibly one or two Saturdays for 5th grade basketball

games. Also, the commissioner is needed to help run/manage the 8th grade girls basketball

tournament. Points are given to the commissioners to fulfill your volunteer requirements. Pleasecall Mrs. Szyszka @ 847-309-0345 or see Mrs. Ryan for more information.
