WW el coMe & UPdaT e elcome to the summer edition of Capital Q.

This quarter the focus of Capital Q is on our first graduate intake and the pupils that recently spent time with us on work experience from St Aloysius College.

In 2006 our first six graduates joined the company; one year on we take a look at how they’re getting on. I’d also like to welcome Nan Wang and Anisha Mayor who have joined us as part of the 2007 graduate intake.

Congratulations to all those who have worked on the Northern Batch project which reached financial close this month (September). This is a fantastic achievement by all involved.

Next quarter there will be a report on Exeter Airport and its bumper summer season. In July a record 112,301 people used the airport demonstrating the increasing popularity of the airport.

A number of people from across the business have written articles for this edition, thank you to everyone who has contributed. If you’d like to contribute to the autumn edition please get in touch with the marketing department.

B...six graduates one year on en Johnstone, Ben Willet, Jing Hao, Philip Dorin, Emma Cheetham and Malte Martinsen joined BBCap in 2006 as part of BBCap’s first graduate intake. One year on we take a look at how they are getting on...

I am currently...

MalTe: Working on the Birmingham New Hospitals Project.

eMMa: In San Francisco working on the Oakland Airport Connector bid.

Ben W: In the London office working for the project finance team on Connect CNDR ITN submission and the M80 funding competition. It’s a fantastic team and I am learning a lot every day.

Jing: Taking my 4th placement; in Asset Management.

Ben J: Assisting Jerome Kearns with the Islington BSF close. I’m concentrating on issues surrounding the LEP and other unique aspects of the project such as utilities risk.

PhiliP: Working in Singapore. I am currently involved with both the ITE West and NUS bids, learning a great deal due to the nature of the workload and the small team here, allowing me to play an integral part in the bid process.

My most memorable experience so far...

eMMa: Was working in Oakland, because of the differences and challenges facing the US P3 market compared to the UK.

MalTe: I don’t know, I’ve enjoyed all of it!

Jing: Was working on ITE in Singapore – to open another door for BBCap’s growth.

Ben J: Was a project finance meeting when I understood the meaning of ADSCR, OTC and RtM!

Ben W: Was the pupils’ first day at St Giles Special School whilst I was working for Transform Schools Bassetlaw. The pupils, parents, teachers and support staff alike were thrilled with their new school. Seeing the reaction of the pupils and parents as they arrived at their new school is an image I will never forget.

PhiliP: There have been too many to list, both work related and socially! The opening ceremony of a new primary school in Rotherham earlier this year was a highlight. Socially, I would have to say the sailing trip, which was a fantastic weekend, spent with good friends.

Any other comments about your time here so far?

eMMa: A fantastic opportunity to experience living abroad.

MalTe: I’m looking forward to the next year!

Jing: Rotation and rotation – a great way to understand a company and to explore your own potential.

Ben J: I’m on a huge learning curve and it’s still as steep as when I started at BBCap!

PhiliP: I am close to completing four fantastic placements and, on reflection, I feel like I have come an awful long way from the boy with crazy hair back in September 2006!

International update

TStart of term for Ian Woosey he Building Schools for the Future (BSF) market is now the largest target sector for BBCap. In order to achieve ongoing success in the schools market Transform Schools has appointed a new business development director. In July it was announced that Ian Woosey would be moving into this role from his previous position as General Manager at the Birmingham Hospitals Project. Ian tells us more about the move...

T h e B ir M in g h a M n e W h o s P i Ta l s P r o J e c T has been an immensely exciting and fulfilling experience, particularly as some of you will know I was born in the existing Queen Elizabeth Hospital, too many years ago to mention. Taking the project forward from its early beginnings at the pre-qualification stage through to the point now, where the first buildings are almost ready to handover to the Trust, has given me a great sense of satisfaction and pride at what we have achieved as a team.

T h e B ir M in g h a M T e a M are fantastic. We have all learnt a lot over the period together. Working on a project during the bid, through the preferred bidder and construction phases has provided a wealth of knowledge and experience within the team that can be passed on to the benefit of current and future projects.

T r a n s F o r M s c h o o l s intend to win more BSF projects and, whilst this is a new sector for me to be working in, I believe the basic principles of what we need to do to win new business are the same across all our businesses. People do business with individuals they trust. By listening to and understanding our customers concerns and needs, being open and honest and collectively delivering on our commitments, we will be best placed to be successful.

looking ForWard the BSF programme has many opportunities for Transform Schools to secure further work and realise our objective of becoming the market leader in BSF. It is a challenge that I, together with the rest of the Transform Schools team, are looking forward to taking on.

The big news from the US since last quarter is that we have pre-qualified for the North Tarrant Express Project. Four teams out of the seven have been shortlisted for this US $2 billion project. The next stage is due to be submitted later this year.

The US team has also been working hard on preparing the Oakland Airport Connector bid. We are currently one of three bidders, with a preferred bidder announcement expected in 2008.

The German PPP market is currently experiencing increasing activity in the healthcare sector. Besides our existing involvement in two healthcare bids, we are also waiting for the pre-qualification announcement for a third hospital project and are currently preparing PQQ documents for another one. However, there are also a number of schools projects in the pipeline and we have pre-qualified for a vocational school project in Pforzheim.

Since the last quarter it has been announced that we have been shortlisted as one of three bidders to deliver the National University of Singapore, a pioneering learning town concept. A preferred bidder announcement is expected to be announced early in 2008.

The Singapore team also continue to work on the ITE College West bid.

OMeet the buyers n Wednesday July 18th companies based in the areas of Tameside and Salford were invited to the Tameside & Salford Royal Hospitals trusts ‘Meet the Buyer’ event. The aim of the day was to encourage local businesses to tender for the available contracts to build and equip the new Hope and Tameside Hospitals. Over 100 expressions of interest from local companies were received.

The day long event provided an opportunity for those enterprises based in Greater Manchester to find out about the project itself, its timetable and its service requirements, and to understand the opportunities available to the local supply chain. The two hospital projects aim to assist in the regeneration of both areas and a key to this will be to involve and develop the skills of local people and businesses.

The event included on-the-spot advice and business support via Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Business Support Solutions. Their advice was vital for a number of companies in helping them to develop the systems and standards required in order that they could tender for the work. Overall 60 local businesses were offered support from these agencies.

LRelocation, relocation ast quarter Edinburgh moved into their new offices. Shona Dryburgh tells us more about the move.

In May of this year we literally moved in with Haden.

We’ve only moved a few hundred yards but we’re already seeing an improvement in communication. Being side by side with Haden allows for a better working environment all round and improved methods of working.

All the benefits of “living together” are unfolding and we definitely talk more. I think we’ve even agreed who’s turn it is to empty the dishwasher!

With more team building planned the partnership will hopefully continue to blossom!

TKeeping road users informed raffic Scotland enables the collection and distribution of real-time traffic information relating to incidents and events currently taking place on the Scottish trunk road network.

Road users on the M77/GSO are provided with real-time information about road conditions. The aim is to ensure that the best use is made of the road and to improve the safety and efficiency of the network.

By displaying information on variable message signs (VMS), drivers are given advance warning of any problems on the Scottish trunk road network. These may include roadworks, accidents, events, bad weather conditions and road closures.

14 15

CTrees get a “healthcheck” onnect Roads proactively undertakes arbocultural surveys of established trees both within and immediately adjacent to the highway boundary. A “tree doctor” surveys the substantial trees to give them a “healthcheck”.

This year’s landscaping works were completed on the A50 (Uttoxeter-Blythe Bridge Bypass) following recommendations that were carried out as part of a five year check by a qualified arborculturalist.

Checks were made to assess growth, soundness and stability of the trees along the route. The recommendations from the reports were implemented on site by Mayne Land Tech Services. Works included the treatment of diseased trees and the removal of dead trees.

These activities are undertaken to ensure that trees do not fall on the highway during high winds or uproot naturally.

Electronic variable message signs (VMS) are located at strategic points on the network and display traffic information/messages to alert drivers of incidents on the network, their likely impacts and appropriate action to take. Drivers can then make informed decisions as to which route to take. The messages are updated as appropriate and removed once the traffic disruption has ended.

The information provided by VMS helps to reduce the disruption caused by incidents, minimise the effect of congestion and thereby improves the safety and efficiency of the road network.

SHappy birthday BLCL eptember 2007 will see the 2nd birthday of Building Learning Communities; the Rotherham based not-for-profit company established in partnership with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council. Tony Richardson, general manager, tells us more about the charitable organisation’s recent successes...

Whilst we may not be having a party, there is certainly plenty to celebrate. From the board of directors to the caretakers: everyone seems to want to make the company work.

There’s now a wide range of facilities available to support activities such as adult learning, dance, cooking, sports, languages, to name but a few, and the number of lettings is steadily increasing.

More and more interest is being shown in the BLCL model and attitudes are certainly changing. The Football Foundation, for example, is now willing to provide funding to PFI schools thanks to the involvement of BLCL.

Behind the scenes, the partnership involving Transform Schools, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and Haden has been a key factor in getting us to the position we now have in Rotherham. A big thank you to all!

TI Love My Environment launch

ransform Schools is launching a new campaign called I Love My Environment, to raise awareness of the ways in which schools can lead the way for environmental best practice in the local community.

This campaign will be launched across all Transform Schools’ concessions in September and will focus on helping schools to think environmentally and reduce litter, vandalism and graffiti on the school sites.

The campaign supports the Department for Children Schools and Families Sustainable Schools initiative in asking the schools to teach pupils to think about how they can be more environmentally friendly, walking to school, conducting energy audits and recycling.

Schools will be able to win money at the end of each term to help them reach their environmental goals. They will also have the opportunity to win a Greenpower kit car enabling them to take part in the Transform Schools Grand Prix at the end of the school year.

B B c a P i s . . . unique. I have been with BBCap for just over a year and my experience has been very positive. The most outstanding aspect of BBCap is the culture, especially the people who are open, accessible, very motivated and also fun to hang out with.

I also enjoy that we are in the business of investing and creating tangible assets such as roads, hospitals, schools and of course airports. Being able to touch and see our investments is rewarding. I would recommend the site visits to our new joiners.
