Rescue Review

Castaway Animal Rescue Effort has always relied on the help of our amaz-ing volunteers to provide a high qual-ity of life for the animals in our care. Whether it is cleaning cages, walking dogs, helping with fundraisers or any of the other services our volunteers provide, C.A.R.E. appreciates these individuals tremendously. Over the past few years, our volunteer base has grown to include many animal lovers with a variety of talents. We thought it was about time to redesign our volun-teer program to accommodate all the differing talents and interests of our loyal and supportive volunteers.

Earlier this year, C.A.R.E. debuted 14 different ways to help us further our mission of rescuing unwanted animals in Southwest Missouri.

We also are offering classes taught by C.A.R.E. staff and volunteers. These courses will teach our volunteers valu-able skills and techniques they can use in their chosen volunteer program. We have classes over dog training, adoption counseling, shelter cleaning techniques and safe handling of shelter animals.

Our programs have something for everyone, whether you enjoy spending time with animals, love teaching kids or other volunteers, have an interest in learning about the medical side of a shelter or want to unite animals with new families. Go to our volunteer web page to learn more about our classes and get signed up!

The C.A.R.E. MISSION

To rescue as many adoptable animals from “death row” as we can properly care for.

To provide medical treatment to sick or injured stray animals.

To combine an aggressive spay/neuter program with a high volume adoption program while providing quality lifetime care for unadopted pets.

To network with and provide a rescue service for other shelters, ultimately reducing the kill-rate in Southwest Missouri.

Hogs for Dogs 2014 Hogs for Dogs is one of C.A.R.E.’s longest running fundraisers. Denney’s Harley Davidson partners with C.A.R.E. to help raise funds through a motorcycle ride. This event includes a group, catered lunch, live entertainment, a silent auction, raffles and more! This year the event took place on Sunday, July 13th. Motorcycle enthu-siasts gathered at Denney’s in the morning for bagels, registration and the silent auction. The riders left around 10am for a 75 mile ride through the scenic Ozarks. When they returned at noon there was a BBQ lunch and adoptable animals from C.A.R.E. waiting for them. The Showbelles, Billy Dean and Jarret Doughtery provid-ed excellent live entertainment for the participants. Funds were raised for C.A.R.E. and fun was had by all! What a great event, thank you to all at Denney’s Harley Davidson for your hard work and dedication to saving more animals in Southwest Missouri!

C.A.R.E. in the CommunityTaking a look at some of the generous local

businesses that supported C.A.R.E. this summer!

2014 Robin Melton Memorial Polo Match C.A.R.E. remembered one of our biggest supporters, Robin Melton, through a memorial Polo Match on June 7th. This event was made possible by the hard working vol-unteers of C.A.R.E. and the Springfield Polo Club. This event combined two of Robin’s biggest passions, saving animals and playing polo, to create a unique event for both kids and adults.

Gates opened at 2:30pm and the match began at 4pm. In the meantime visitors participated in a great silent auction, with a variety of items donated by local business-es. C.A.R.E. animals strutted their stuff for the spectators during the breaks of the match and were available for adoption throughout the event. After the match, appe-tizers, drinks and dinner were served. Guests were treat-ed to live music, a live auction, and raffle. It was truly a great time! This fundraiser successfully celebrated and commemorated Robin’s devotion to rescuing animals and helped raise funds for C.A.R.E. to further our mission.

Thank you to all that came to this event! Your support is what makes everything possible!

In the AdoptIon CentersC.A.R.E. Springfield Adoption Center

Meet Zeke, a 3 year old domestic shorthair. He is an intelligent and quiet cat who enjoys calmly observing his surroundings. Although quite frisky at times, Zeke loves to just be held or have his ears scratched. One of his favorite things to do is snuggle with and groom the other cats at our adoption center. This uniquely striking kitty would be a great addition to a family looking for an amenable cat to cuddle and love.

C.A.R.E. Springfield Adoption Center

Lesley is a 4 year old Lab and Greyhound mix. She is a very adapt-able dog, who shines in almost any situation. Lesley gets along great with other pets and children, so she could be a perfect fit for any family! She is very eager to learn and already knows a few com-mands. Lesley would love to accompany you on trips or errands, she loves the car and enjoys going new places. Lesley is ready for a family to call her own, could you be her perfect match?

C.A.R.E. Ozark Adoption Center

Abel is a one year old Husky and Shepherd mix. He is a gorgeous and unique looking dog with black and cream markings. He also has one blue eye and one brown. Abel is a very devoted and loyal dog once he trusts you. Even though he can be shy at first, Abel is incredibly sweet when you take the time to know him. He is looking for a family of one or two people who he can protect and love unconditionally. Abel loves to run and play, so he would enjoy a fenced in yard or an active person to take him running or hiking.

C.A.R.E. Ozark Adoption Center

Joetta is a 2 year old muted tortishell cat. She is a small cat, but she has a big spirit. Joetta is curious and outgoing, without being domineering. She is very calm, content to observe what is going on around her without having to be the center of attention. Joetta is a very affectionate kitty, and will gladly sit on your lap if invited. She loves looking out the window and laying in the sun. She also gets along well with other cats, so she could be the perfect companion for your feline! If your family is looking for a laid back kitty, your search may just end with Joetta!

“This is Finley. Our family adopted him on 5/18/14 from the Springfield C.A.R.E. location. He’s a duck tolling retriever! We love him so much! He even has a furry brother named Poptart that is a pug! They love to play!”

-Laura H.“I would like to thank C.A.R.E for their dedication and hard work. 3 years ago today my 3 kids and I went to the Springfield adoption center and fell in love with a tiny orange ball of fur, purrs and endless curiosity. Scamper was so tiny he could fit in one hand. Now he is 2 armfuls of well loved and spoiled rotten

baby boy. This is him ruling the roost. Thank you C.A.R.E.”-The Shanks Family

2.) Volunteer or donate. C.A.R.E. and other rescues are always looking for helping hands to take care of these extra kitties. If you do not have the extra time to help out at the shelter, a monetary donation or a few bottles of kitten formula go a long way to helping us rescue more cats and kittens.

3.) If you are feeding a colony of feral cats, be sure to look into a local TNR (trap, neuter, release) program. Obviously you care for these cats, but without actively altering the cats in the colony you can soon be overwhelmed with kittens. You may find that a few of the cats you have trapped are friendly enough to go to a home, and if they are not then they will at least not contribute to the cat population. Some programs also vaccinate the cats to prevent the spread of communicable diseases, which is definitely a benefit to the cats!

4.) Become a Foster Parent. C.A.R.E. and shelters all across the country are in need of foster homes to care for very young kittens or pregnant mothers. These animals are not adoptable yet and re-quire a lot of attention to maintain (which can be hard to get in a busy shelter). Foster families are an enormous help because they can open space in the shelter for an adult cat or dog who is ready for a home. Ultimately you can help two animals when you foster, the animal you are caring for in you home and the one who needed that extra cage before it ran out of time.

5.) Adopt a cat or kitten. Adopting a cat is always a great help to C.A.R.E. and other shelters, kitten season or not. Our mission is to get these animals into loving homes, and by adopting you are helping us achieve it. Often, adult cats are overlooked during kitten season because of the avail-ability of adorable and fluffy kittens. Don’t forget about these kitties, as they will be very grateful and love you just as much as a young kitten. Take one home as a new friend or a playmate for your existing pets!

Hopefully these tips will ensure that you are ready to deal with kitten season. Being proactive is always the best way to help

the cats in your area and your home!

Get Your Fix, Fixithttp://fixit-foundation.org/getyourfix/

Although the term “kitten season” may sound adorable, it is a very real problem all over the nation. From late Spring to early Fall there is a huge increase in the amount of litters being born to unspayed feral and domestic cats. C.A.R.E., as well as shelters and rescues everywhere, strive to save as many of these mothers and kittens as possi-

ble. Read on to find out how you can help reduce the amount of litters born, and save more cats and kittens.

1.) Spay or neuter your cat. This is the most effective way to reduce the number of unwanted cats in your area. It is astonishing the impact that one

unaltered cat can make in an area. Cats are capable of reproducing at 5 months of age, and an unspayed female will go into heat every three weeks.

Litters generally produce 4-6 kittens. This means that after 7 years, one female and all her kittens could theoretically produce 420,000 cats. Spaying

or neutering your cat can help keep this scenario, or anything close to it, from happening.
