2020 OUTSTANDING AWARD WINNERS

TO BE RECOGNIZED AT THE 2021 STATE

TRADITIONAL BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Please join us in Aberdeen to help us with this long overdue celebration! Spirit of a Champion Award Correna Templar (Rapid City Storm)

Don Baker Award Dawn Ruhlman (Brookings)

Family Of The Year Laura Fossen Family (Spearfish)

Unity Award Kaylee Namken (Vermillion)

Outstanding Coach (Ron Stewart Award) Peggy Heermann (Aberdeen)

Volunteer Of The Year (Lyle Farrand Award) Michael Fletcher (Sioux Falls)

Champion Award (DJ Mertens Award) AGROPUR (Lake Norden)

The first half of 2021 hasn’t exactly been business as usual, but it is safe to say we are trending in the right direction. Our fundraising team has been in the field for months and the sports team is hopeful for a Fall Classic complete with a dance, ban-quet, and a full slate of sport.

There is optimism, albeit cautious opti-mism. Globally, studies have shown that people with ID are 2-4x more likely to die

from COVID-19 than the general popula-tion. In the United States, the most recent study shows that people with ID are almost 6x more likely to die from COVID-19. Spe-cial Olympics encourages everyone who can get the COVID-19 vaccine, to be vac-cinated. Being vaccinated will help protect you from getting COVID-19, prevent seri-ous illness, and may also help protect peo-ple around you.

PERSPECTIVE

So Long, Friend

Every once in a while you get the great pleasure of

knowing a person who is a real-life Norm. You know,

Norm the guy from the TV show Cheers. That was

Bill Clucas. The second he entered a room there was

a chorus of “Bill” filling the space. It’s hard to explain

but everyone would somehow be happier just be-

cause he was there. He would work the room with

that distinct Boston accent, giving everyone the ap-

propriate amount of crap. He had time for everyone

and he made those who knew him better… better

athletes, better coaches, but mostly just better

people.

Bill’s legacy as a Special

Olympics Coach, mentor,

and friend will live on in our

hearts and memories. But I

know that everyone who

knew him wishes we had

more time with him. We

will miss you, dear friend.

New Program Launched Physical fitness is a key part of the Special Olympics mis-

sion. Fitness is the state of optimal health and performance

through adequate physical activity, nutrition, and hydration.

For athletes to be fit, they must practice healthy habits year

-round and lifelong. Every Special Olympics South Dakota

program has been invited to join our Fit 5 Club. The goal of

this fitness programming is to empower athletes and their

supporters to take

charge of their health

and fitness by providing

the necessary educa-

tion, social support, op-

portunities, and track-

ing of progress.

If your delegation

would like to learn

more about our Fit 5

Club, please contact

Johna at the State

office.

New Partnership Forged

Special Olympics South Dakota and Empower U have

partnered up to provide coaches and athletes some valu-

able pieces of training.

Sports physical therapists, Nathan LeMaster (left) and

Tyler Anderson (right) joined forces with SOSD athletes

John McHale and Nick Mills to shoot videos focusing on

three areas of training: running (long and short dis-

tance), jumping, and throwing.

These videos provide athletes and coaches extensive

warm-up, cool-down, and training tips covering all three

track and field disciplines.

We are thankful for this partnership with Empower U and

their desire to make sure the athletes of SOSD are pre-

pared for action!

WHAT IS THE TRUCK CONVOY?

The Truck Convoy is a celebration of the trucking industry and its support for

Special Olympics. What started as a local event in Florida in 2001, the event has

evolved into an international movement with Convoys in over 24 states and 4

provinces annually.

The South Dakota Convoy began in Sioux Falls and Rapid City in 2003 with an

event being held in both locations for the first 2 years. In 2005, Sioux Falls con-

tinued and has been going strong ever since. In 2014, the Rapid City Convoy

was restarted and is growing steadily. The South Dakota Convoys, since 2003,

have had a total of 1,971 trucks involved and have raised over $729,000 for the

South Dakota Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

HOW DOES THE TRUCK CONVOY RAISE MONEY?

To participate, 'truckers' pay a $100 fee before or at registration. During the

event, both locations hold auctions for valuable items as well as for the prestig-

ious title of Lead Truck. The Convoy solicits corporate sponsors and engages

community partners to contribute financially to this great fundraising event for

a great cause

WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?

100% of the funds go directly to support and benefit the Law Enforcement

Torch Run, Special Olympics South Dakota's largest grassroots fundraising cam-

paign. Special Olympics South Dakota has over 2,750 Athletes statewide and is

growing larger every day.

Sioux Falls hosted our inaugural

“Golf Fore Special Olympics” event.

Over 150 people competing in

teams of three golfers participated

in this scramble style tournament.

North of $7,000 was raised.

It was a fun event for both golfers

and non-golfers itching to get out-

side and on the course.

brought to you through our partner-

ship with Tinners and Wileys pubs in

Sioux Falls.

Congratulations to Traci Vic from Har-

risburg for finding the ace in the 13th

week of the chase.

We had so much fun we will be start-

ing a new round of Chase the Ace

soon! Tickets are 1 for $5, 5 for $20, or

10 for $35. You need not be present to

DEVELOPMENT - LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN

The Law Enforcement Torch Run

and SOSD are once again hosting

Pigskin Madness! This fundraiser

combines two of our favorite

things—football and raising money

for Special Olympics South Dakota!

Tickets can be purchased for $20

and are being sold across the state

by the SOSD State Office, South Da-

kota law enforcement, and Special

Olympics local groups.

Ticket owners are assigned four ran-

domly drawn teams each week. To-

tal points scored by your four teams

are added together to give you a

weekly total. Each ticket lasts for

the entire 18 weeks of the regular

professional football season. Partic-

ipates will have 162 chances to win

throughout the season.

We will be awarding prizes to the

top 8 highest scores, as well as the

lowest score. Over $600 will be

awarded each week! At the end of

the 18 weeks, a Grand Prize winner

will be announced for the individual

who has the highest accumulated

score over the season. This winner

will receive $500.00.

Contact the State Office at 605-331-

4117 if you are interested in selling

a book or purchasing a ticket.

You can also purchase tickets online

at www.sosd.pigskinmadness.org.

For more information or to check

weekly results, visit our website at

www.sosd.org.

Tickets must be purchased by 5:00

pm on September 9, 2021.

Casey’s Campaign Shines Again

During two weeks in April 2021, 47 Casey's Stores throughout the state offered

their customers the opportunity to round-up their purchase with proceeds go-

ing to Special Olympics South Dakota. This year we raised $22,718!

We very much appreciate the Casey’s stores throughout the state and their em-

ployees who were the driving force

behind the success of this campaign.

What will cops do for Special Olympics

South Dakota athletes? The better

question is “What won’t they do?”

On July 16, 2021, Cops took the rooftops

of Flyboy Donuts in

Sioux Falls blatantly

bribing patrons to do-

nate to SOSD in ex-

change for yummy

Flyboy donut incen-

tives. This legal crime

spree raised $5,555.

Thank you Flyboy for this annual partner-

ship… we appreciate you!

Save The Date! Come see us at various

Sioux Falls HY-Vee stores on

October 9, 2021, and get

razzed by a Cop on a Roof-

top. They will be stuck up

there until their donation

goal is reached. So come on,

show a cop some love!

On August 17, 2021, members of the

Law Enforcement Torch Run will be run-

ning food and cleaning tables at the four

Culver’s locations in Sioux Falls spread-

ing awareness and raising “tips” for

SOSD.

Stop for a Butterburger today and drop

your spare change into the Change for

Change jars. You will be treated to a

wonderful meal and you will be treating

our athletes to amazing SO events….

It seems this program gets more important

and more exciting each year.

Our work continues to focus not just on the

elimination of the R-word but on the creation

of a new reality: inclusion for all people with

intellectual and developmental disabilities at

school, in the workplace, and society in gen-

eral.

Judging by our participation numbers, it seems

safe to assume the schools in South Dakota

are enthusiastic supporters of this mission.

• We think you had fun with our “anything goes”

color pallet this year. So, let’s do it again!

• All winter wearables will be loved (i.e. scarves,

hats mittens, head bands)

• Our goal is 400 pieces

• Due date is March 1, 2022

Thank you crafters!

Welcome to Team SOSD,

Hanna!

Hi everyone! I'm Hanna Zerr. I am a sports fanatic, for-

mer collegiate athlete, and my favorite title I have is

“older sister.” I was born and raised in Minnesota but

have lived in Sioux Falls since 2018. I obtained my Un-

dergraduate Degree from Bemidji State University in

Sports Administration and most recently graduated

from Augustana University with a Master's Degree in

Sports Administration and Leadership.

While in graduate school preparing to enter the work-

force, I kept asking myself “what's next” and saw my

two younger sisters light up when they talked about

working with people with intellectual disabilities. Spe-

cial Olympics has a significant impact on our house,

with all three of us working within the field.

Being a collegiate athlete at Bemidji State provided me

a platform to volunteer

with Special Olympics and

that was an invaluable

experience. Volunteering

at the Track and Field

events in the spring was

amazing, my favorite

event was the long jump.

Seeing athletes light up

from their successes was

something that pushed

me to want a career at

Special Olympics South Dakota. SOSD is an amazing

place to make an impact in others' lives while providing

compassion and empathy along the way.

Hanna will be working with Unified Champion Schools

and can be reached at [email protected].

YOU GUESSED IT, WE ARE DOING IT AGAIN! WHAT: SONA Move Challenge, an 8-week

movement challenge to see how many minutes

of exercise participants can complete each

week.

WHEN: Registration opens August 6 - Septem-

ber 1. SONA Move Challenge runs September 13

- November 7.

WHO: Participants will have the choice of com-

peting as an Individual (Special Olympics ath-

letes only), Doubles (traditional or Unified), or as

part of a Team (traditional or Unified)

What is an Athlete Leadership Council (ALC)? We are a group of athletes who meet using a well-thought-

out agenda to discuss Special Olympics topics important to

us. We then make recommendations to Program leadership.

Formerly known as the Athlete Input Council, we have been

organized and meeting since 2013. Two members of the ALC

also serve on the SOSD Board of Directors.

Fellow athletes, if you have an idea or concern, talk to one of

us… let’s work together!

UNIFIED CHAMPION SCHOOLS

Our Goal: Schools that Welcome

All People

Young people today face many

challenges, from achieving

personal and academic success to

feeling emotionally and physically

safe. In particular, students with

disabilities are 2-3 times more

likely to be bullied than their peers

without disabilities.* To

combat this, the Special

Olympics Unified Champion

Schools program is aimed at

promoting social inclusion

for students with intellectual

disabilities through

intentionally planned and

implemented activities affecting

system-wide change.

With sports as the foundation, the

three-component model offers a

unique combination of effective

activities that equip young people

with tools and training to create

sports, classrooms, and school

climates of acceptance. These are

school climates where students

with disabilities feel welcome and

are routinely included in, and feel a

part of, all activities, opportunities

and functions. This is accomplished

by implementing inclusive sports,

inclusive youth leadership

opportunities, and whole school

engagement. The program is

designed to be woven into the

fabric of the school, enhancing

current efforts and providing rich

opportunities that lead to

meaningful change in creating a

socially inclusive school that

supports and engages all learners.

Together we are creating a Unified

Generation that Chooses to

Include.

OUR WORK Special Olympics is a global movement

that unleashes the human spirit every

day around the world through the trans-

formative power and joy of sport.

Through programming in sports, health,

education, and community building, Spe

cial Olympics is tackling the inactivity,

stigma, isolation, and injustice that peo-

ple with intellectual disabilities (ID) face.

Our work goes far beyond sports events,

driving social change that enables full

social participation for people with ID.

Proven to Increase Inclusion Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools® builds on Special

Olympics’ values, principles, practices, experiences and impacts to shape a generation that welcomes

everyone. #UnifiedGeneration
