Message From Our Executive Director

Dear NAMI NAMIMontCoPa

Friends,

Days are flying by! I cannot be-

lieve that Mental Health Aware-

ness Month is behind us and we

completed our second virtual walk.

We are so humbled by the gener-

osity of our community in raising

mental health awareness and rais-

ing funds for our local program-

ming. It was a glorious month of

celebrating recovery and spreading

NAMI Montco Goodness!

This month I have been reminded

time and time again about how

special we humans are. In spread-

ing mental health awareness, we

remind people that our mental

health and physical health are

equally important. Our mental and

physical health balance each oth-

er. A dear friend suffered a stroke

several weeks ago and while her

body recovers, she has shown re-

siliency and beauty in her sense of

humor, vulnerability and connec-

tion. We all may have hard days

that overwhelm us and perhaps

scare us, but please never forget

that you are worth of finding pur-

pose and peace. NAMI MontCoPa

is here to help you.

We are busy planning for our 10th

annual Benefit for the Brain, to be

held in November, and are looking

for volunteers for support groups,

Ending the Silence, and general

community events. We hope you

will consider joining with us!

As summer begins, remember to

enjoy the sunshine and take care

of you. Be intentional about how

you care for you and do something

every day that brings you joy.

Look hard for that joy, especially

on the day that it feels hidden. If

you or someone you know could

benefit from our affiliate or needs

help making connections in the

community, please contact us.

My very best to you.

Easy Healthy Summer Quinoa Salad Recipe This EASY, simple, summer quinoa salad (aka cold quinoa salad) features the BEST summer

produce and is perfect for warm nights.

Ingredients

Instructions

Prepare quinoa as directed. (I like using broth, but water is fine.) Set aside in large mixing bowl.

Prep veggies: slice zucchini in half moon shapes, mince garlic, slice tomatoes in half, cut corn off kernel if

using fresh corn. If using frozen, remove from freezer.

Heat olive oil in large sauté pan. When hot, add zucchini, garlic, tomatoes, and corn to pan. Cook, stirring

frequently for about 5 minutes, or until vegetables have softened. Season with salt and pepper and add to

the bowl with quinoa.

In a small bowl, whisk together pesto, lemon juice, and water. Drizzle over

quinoa and vegetables, toss to distribute.

Crumble goat cheese and sprinkle with pine nuts before serving.

Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Yields: 6 Servings

Prep Time: 15 Min Cook Time: 20 Min Total Time: 35 Min

Q: What is your role at NAMI? A: Group Facilitator Q: Why did you get involved with NAMI, Montgomery County? A: I have been a consumer of mental health services for many years. I suffer from depression and have family and friends whom also have mental illness. For the last eleven and a half years I have worked as a Certified Peer Specialist at various jobs and agencies. One of my main goals was to always run groups as I found them so helpful in my own recov-ery. No job I worked awarded me the opportunity so I looked to outside agen-cies and discovered NAMI running a training to be a group facilitator. I immediately signed up for the training and have loved doing groups since. Q: What does mental health mean to you? A: Mental health means learning to cope with the symptoms of your illness. Whether through treatment, use of coping tools, or supports like friends or groups. It is important to practice good mental health in order to overcome the obstacles that our illness put in our way. Q: How do you practice wellness? A: I use a variety of strategies such as coping tools like coloring and writing, speak out when feeling depressed and relying on my supports, as well as taking care of my self care and physical needs. Q: What is a favorite quote? A: "Let me tell you something you already know, the world aint all sunshine and rainbows. I's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it aint about how hard ya hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, how much you can take and keep moving forward. THATS HOW WINNING IS DONE! Now if you know what your worth then go out and get what you're worth, but you gotta be willing to take the hits and not point fingers saying you aint where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody. COWARDS DO THAT AND THAT AINT YOU! YOUR BETTER THEN THAT!" - Rocky Balboa 2006 Q: Would you pick the beach or the mountains? A: Definitely the mountains
