POCKET MONEYThe price includes everything that studentsneed while here (please see the registrationform for a detailed description) but studentsmay wish to have pocket money to purchasesouvenirs and presents, for personal shopping,or to have additional drinks, sweets or snacks onexcursions or in town. £75 per week shouldprobably be enough for most students and werecommend a maximum of £125 per week.
The best and safest way to provide pocketmoney is with a prepaid cash card, such as Visaor MasterCard. There are significant advantagesto these cards over cash. You will be able to set-up the card before travel and pre-load theirpocket money. They are available for youngchildren and you will be able to set spendinglimits as well as top up the card and monitortheir spending from home. They will be able touse the card to pay in shops or take money fromATMs just like a debit or credit card. There aremany different providers of prepaid cash cardsacross the world and you will be able to find themost suitable one for you.
If you wish, we can hold your child’s card safelyfor them while they are in school and issue it tothem for excursions and shopping trips. Let usknow if you would like us to do this.
If you do wish to send cash for your child’spocket money, it would be safest to arrange fora bank transfer to our bank account, rather thantheir carrying cash to Sherborne. It is much saferthat they do not arrive with large amounts ofcash.
Cash, passport and other documents should behanded in for safe-keeping on arrival. Pocketmoney can be collected from the office atmorning break times Monday-Friday. Studentscollect their money and sign to say they havereceived it. We normally restrict the amountthey can take at any one time unless there is aparticular reason, so that students are notcarrying around large sums of money that theycould lose. We suggest that students should notnormally carry more than £30 on them.
Any locally charged medical costs may be paidfrom pocket money (see section on health andwelfare).
TRAVELLING ALONE?We have staff at London Heathrowon official arrival/ departureWednesdays and can also arrangefor your child to be met at otherairports. Stansted, Luton or LondonCity Airports are not recommendedas transfers are much moreexpensive and significantly longer.Heathrow and Bristol, followed byGatwick, are the most convenient.
