n With Yanchep Sun City no

longer managing the Two Rocksmarina, what happens to the localgroups that have received vitalsponsorship for many years?

Will the Community Bus andAustralia Day breakfast survive?

. . . . .n Chalkboard notices at the

Indian restaurant at Two Rocksare confusing - ‘Closed forrenovations’ and Closed foremergency’.

Can anyone explain?

. . . . .n It would appear the Two Rocks

tavern has entered another fazeof being closed - There are plentyof rumours, but can anyoneexplain?

. . . . .n I would like to thank the ladies,

gentlemen, St Johns Ambulance,WA Police Department, FireBrigade and tow truck drivers thatattended the car accident onBurns Beach Road, Joondalup onSaturday 8 November.

I can't thank you all enough forbeing so good with my four littlegrandchildren and daughter-in-law, thankfully no major injuries.

I don't know how else to get mymessage through to you all, butmaybe if someone reads this theywill pass on my message, fromone very thankful and distraughtnanny.

. . . . .n How many local residents had

a ‘Whale’ of a time getting to workthis morning on Marmion Ave?

I hear it was a ‘stinker of a trip’!

Or, did they choose to goWanneroo Road only to becaught in the congestion from asecond accident in less than 12hours near Flynn Drive/WannerooRoad intersection?

. . . . .n With DOT in charge at the

marina, will the $7.00 boat rampfee go towards a new jetty?

. . . . .

n Why don’t people attend the

Remembrance Day service?

. . . . .n I hear the Sun City News is

moving their office at the end ofyear - I wonder if the NCT will beout there saying ‘they are closing’.

Keep up the great work Terry, youare at least willing to call a ‘spadea spade’ with plenty of worthwhilelocal news.

n Does the City of Wanneroo

support local business?

If so, could the self-promotingmayor, provide full details to showthey really do?

. . . . .n What can be done about the

massive dust problem on TwoRocks Road, Yanchep BeachRoad and Marmion Avenue?

With all these earthworks, surelythe council or state governmentshould be monitoring it?

. . . . .n Brickbats to the WA Education

Department for their very poorperformance in handling a veryserious issue at Yanchep DistrictHigh School - Where is their ‘Dutyof Care’ to parents, students andteachers?

. . . . .n I don’t like the new North West

Metropolitan Police District, itstretches as far south as Morley,Mosman Park and Cottlesloe.

What chance has Two Rocks andYanchep got of having regularpatrols and action from police?

There may be a police station atYanchep, but when is there everany police available?

. . . . .n More Sound Off, next issue.

DoorknockI would like to thank all thosewho contributed to theDottyback Bend HeartFoundation Doorknock Appealrecently, which collected atotal of $105.80.

Your fundraising efforts havehelped raise an amazing $4.5million Australiawide, supporting the foundationslife saving work.

This really is a fantastic resultand will help to make evenmore crucial research intoheart disease possible.

From the bottom of the HeartFoundations heart, thank youfor your continued support.

Rudy Menke, Yanchep.

Cowardly attackOn Tuesday afternoon mykids witnessed two teenageboys on scooters atShamrock Park in TwoRocks, mutilating a femaleBurtons legless lizard withtheir scooters and laughingabout it.

We know she was a femalebecause she was carryingeggs which were alsodestroyed.

They left the lizard therelaying in pieces, knowing, bytheir cries of ‘it's still alive!’ asthey rode away, that she wasstill alive and suffering.

I had to put her out of hermisery as she lay theregasping for breath, her tinybody severed into pieces.

Please teach your childrenabout respecting and caringfor animals, especially nativespecies.

Teach them that all creaturesmatter, irrespective of theirsize or species.

Being an animal loving family,my kids were all verydisturbed by witnessing this,as was I hearing about it andseeing the animal left in sucha way.

If these were my kids, I'd beextremely concerned.

What a joke the bus service is!Utterly disgusted with theservice and even bought anextra car as my wife no longeruses public transport.

You cannot get a bus fromOcean Keys Shopping Centreto Yanchep, you have to go toClarkson Station and change.

Really, yes it's true.

So you go from Ocean Keysto Clarkson Station and wait15 minutes, then change, kthen go to Butler Station andoff you go.

Also, there is a bus toAlkimos. But that is as far as it

goes - No bus should just goto Alkimos, it is a waste ofresources.

Alkimos should be a stop aspart of the journey to Yanchepor indeed Two Rocks.

The PTA could easily run fourservices an hour by doing around trip instead of the oneper hour, if you are lucky.

It does not take a lot ofworking out but the brightsparks at the PTA seem to bestruggling.

A Baker, Yanchep.

Call not returnedMy daughter catches the busto and from Irene McCormackCollege. My daughter is year7 and is 12 years old.

Instead of catching a directbus to school and home, shenow has to get off at Butlerstation to catch another bus,and also has to pay twice -Previously she would payonce.

This bus trip home now takesan extra 20-30 minutesdepending on her getting outof school directly on the siren.

I really don't like the idea ofher getting off at Butler -There are too many kids fromdifferent schools and toomany weirdos about.

I really think that there areenough school children from

schools like Irene's, Alkimos,Quinns to fill a bus or two thatcan come direct up toYanchep without stopping atButler.

I contacted Transperth aboutmy concerns and was told Iwould receive a call back, butI have not - That was a fewweeks ago.

Linda Corcoran, Yanchep.

Bus safetyI am seeing too many securityvehicles following Transperthbuses around Butler,Yanchep and Two Rocks.

What does it say about ourcommunity - Is it that unsafeto travel on public transport?

School children are beingforced to travel on the generalbus service, costing parentsmore, taking longer to get toand from school, all in thename of ‘progress’.

The State Governmentshould be ashamed that theyare forcing our schoolchildren to travel on a busservice that isn’t safe.

It is time the communityspoke out and organisationlike the Residents Associationdid something worthwhile forthe community.

Earlier this month, there wasan ugly incident at YanchepDistrict High School with aYear 8 student beingthreatened with a knife.

Several parents and studentshave confirmed that bullyingat Yanchep DHS especiallybetween the Year 9s and 8shas been a problem for mostof the year.

The recent incident saw theschool go into ‘lockdownmode’ and police called to theincident.

Police took away a Year 9student and questioned himabout a knife and drugs foundin his possession.

The Sun City News under-stands the Year 9 studentwas suspended for ten daysand then allowed to return toschool.

The student targeted in theattack has not returned toYanchep DHS and isrelocating to another school.

The Sun City News is awarethat another student in theYear 9 gang already has hada restraining order imposedagainst him.

One parent said: “TheEducation Department undera Duty of Care is supposed toprovide a safe environmentfor our children to learn. Iwouldn’t call this a safeenvironment.

“I worry about children beingfrightened and blackmailed atYanchep DHS, because thereis so much drug in thatschool.

As a community member, Iwant Yanchep DHS cleanedup, the bullies expelled.”

Yanchep DHS principal, AlanCurtis told the Sun City News:“The situation was defusedthanks to the quick thinking ofother students and schoolstaff and the knife wasconfiscated calmly, but thestudent later became agitatedagain and threatened staff.

“Police attended andapprehended the student, who was also suspendedfrom school.

“Thankfully no one was hurtphysically and our schoolpsychologist spokeimmediately with the smallnumber of students directlyaffected by the incident.

“In terms of the suspendedstudent, we have plannedfurther support for their returnto school to help manage andmoderate their behaviour.”

Violence in schools continuesto increase - 27 per cent ofstudents aged four to nine arebullied at least every fewweeks. In 87 per cent of thesecases, onlookers are presentand do nothing.

Of course, these statistics stilldo not tell the whole story. The problem becomes moreextensive when we considerthe impact on not just thefamilies of the victims, but thefamilies of the perpetrators aswell.

Violence in schools is aproblem that is having aneffect on our society as awhole, and if left unchecked itcould do long-lasting harm.

Studies show that more andmore students are coming toschool with weapons thanever before - A startlingtendency for children to carryknives is being increasinglyscrutinised as the rates ofstabbings soar.

The violence in our schoolsystem must be dealt withsooner rather than later. Asthe assault rates and bullyingcontinue to draw headlines

across the country, it isimperative that we worktoward a solution that gets tothe heart of the problem, quickly.

Recent figures from theAustralian Drug Foundationshow that 40 per cent of 12 to17 year olds are regularlyusing drugs and/or alcohol.

Seventeen percent have triedinhalants, 14.8 per cent havetried cannabis, three per centusing hallucinogens, 2.9 percent using amphetamines,2.7 per cent using ecstacy, two per cent tried steroidswith 1.7 per cent usingcocaine or heroin.

Sadly the drug problemacross the Perth metro areaincluding Alkimos, Yanchepand Two Rocks is rife.

Long term, alcohol and drugsusage damages thedeveloping brain.

Violence in school rising Crime squad arrest six

After raiding houses in Merriwa, Alkimos andRidgewood, last week, the WA Gang Crimesquad arrested Rebel bikies over an allegedassault - The charges relate to an allegedtargeted attack on a 36-year-old male inRidgewood in September. The man, who isunderstood to be known to the group, wasallegedly struck with baseball bats, thenpunched and kicked. He sustained a fracturedskull, broken leg and broken arm.

Police raided 11 properties linked to the gangand arrested seven people including the sixalleged members. The men belong to theClarkson chapter of the Rebels club.

Low-life theftLast Sunday morning,Yanchep Surf LifeSaving Club membersdiscovered that a nearnew rescue boat motorhad been stolen fromthe clubhouse.

If anyone knowsanything about thistheft, please callYanchep police on9562 9300 or 131 444.

To replace the motor, the club will need tofundraise $5000.

For a small community, growingfast, the need for vital basicfamily support services isessential.

Where are the support serviceswhen an incident occurs?

Having a school lockdown withstudents and teachers beingthreatened is extremely serious, but when there is a lack ofsupport services to help peopleaffected by an incident, it isbloody disgraceful.

I spoke with the parents of thestudent who was threatened byanother student; and a weekafter the incident, the studentassaulted had not been offeredany support from the EducationDepartment or any othergovernment support service -What a disgrace!

The parents of the victim aredevastated, they can’t under-stand the school’s decision notto expel the attacker, only takingminimal action for such aserious incident.

No one from the school hascontacted the victim or hisfamily - Why? What has oursociety become?

Is the behaviour of our childrena direct reflection on theparents?

It's not easy to admit that ourchildren's actions are anythingbut a direct result of somethingwe've said, done, or taught.

Children who don’t feel theirparents care, will look foralternatives and sadly, theyoften make the wrong choices.

We appear to be going througha second or third generationalchange of poor parental carewith the ‘she’ll be right’ attitudebeing common.

How many more children aregoing to become ‘damagedgoods’ due to their parents?

Then there are those parentswho pass their child’s behaviourresponsibilities on to the school.

So where does the buck stop?

Parents need to acceptresponsibility for their children, schools need to accept a levelof responsibility, communitiesneed to set standards and makebetter communities for all.

It really is time for a change ordo we want more problems? &QQ AA

How do you like to spend your

weekends?

No set pattern unless I’m giving aworkshop at Capricorn House. Otherthan that, just pottering around. Whenyou’re retired you can choose whichdays to have a ‘weekend’.

What is your most treasured possession?

My mind/brain. Would be lost without it! What would you first save in a house fire?

Perhaps my computer and the photos I haven’t scanned yet. What is the last book you read?

Just about to get my 902nd book from the Two Rocks Library Just finishedreading ‘Giving up the Ghost: a memoir’. I read about four or five books aweek, novels and non-fiction. If there is one thing you would change about Australia, what would it be?

Nothing is wrong with Australia just some of the people who run it.Who would you invite to dinner?

I don’t really ‘do’ dinner – no dining room, table or chairs. So maybe I couldinvite a homeless person to share a bowl of homemade vegetable soupsitting at a kitchen bench on camp chairs. If I had anything better to offer Iwould ask Stephen Fry – interesting guy, amusing and intelligent. What was your most embarrassing moment?

Can’t remember any – now, that’s embarrassing!

Jenny Russell and her familyhave lived on their catamaranat Two Rocks marina fornearly three years.

Jenny, a mother of two, knewthere was something wrongwith her left breast. She hada history of breast cysts butthought this lump might bedifferent so visited her doctor.

He confirmed it neededfurther investigation andreferred her to Osborne ParkHospital for an ultrasoundbiopsy.

To her shock the pathologistrefused to carry out the test, stating her lump was only4.5mm and that he onlychecked lumps over 10mm.

Jenny returned to her doctorwho again referred her backfor an ultrasound biopsy butfor a second time theyrefused to carry out the test.

Undeterred, Jenny insistedthere was something wrongand eventually, after a seeinga different specialist whospoke with her doctor, Jennyhad the test on her third visitto the hospital.

The following day shetelephoned her GP for theresults and she was referredto the breast clinic at SirCharles Gairdner Hospital fora MRI scan.

The news was not good. Itwas confirmed she had acancerous tumour and sadlyit had grown to 60mm.

Before she had theultrasound biopsy, the tumourwas 6mm, but Jenny waswarned the test sometimescould cause the tumour torapidly grow and unfortunatelythis was the case for Jenny.

Within eight days she saw theshape of her breast changeand her nipple began toinvert, a common sign of agrowing tumour.

By the time she went intotheatre, two weeks from theultrasound biopsy, the lumphad grown to 100mm.

This was a big shock toJenny, as she had been giventhe all clear after amammogram just one yearbefore the diagnosis.

However, after furtherinvestigation it revealed thatthe lump or tumour was‘shadowed’, ie: behind breasttissue and therefore did notshow up on the mammogram.

Jenny was given the worst- ‐case scenario and agreed, if

necessary, she would have amastectomy.

Just one month after her firstvisit to her local doctor Jennyhad her left breast and 11nymph nodes removed, threeof which had cancer in them, followed by six weeks ofchemotherapy.

Surprisingly Jenny feltreasonably well during thetherapy, if a little tired.

So much so she often droveherself to the hospital, as herhusband Peter was, and stillis, a FIFO worker and wasn’talways around.

It was at this time that Jennyand Peter decided to makesome life changing decisions.

They lived in a great house inTrigg but they’d alwayswanted to live on a boat, theyhad a small boat they mooredat Hillary’s.

So they grabbed life by thehorns, sold their house, bought a catamaran, andmoved themselves, their twoteenage children, and familydog onto the boat!.

“Peter said I needed toconcentrate on resting andgetting well and we’d alwayswanted to live on a boat,”explained Jenny. “It meant Icould relax and not havehours of housework to do.”

Following the chemotherapy,Jenny then had a six weekradiotherapy course.

This was not quite sopleasant and she did sufferburns, but as she positivelystated, “these have allcleared up now.”

In October 2013, Jenny wentin for reconstructive surgeryon her left breast.

She asked if the surgeoncould also remove her rightbreast as a preventativemeasure at the same timeand reconstruct a new breaston the right.

By April 2015, it will be fiveyears since her initialdiagnosis. Life looks very

different for Jenny and herfamily now.

They all live on a boat, theycherish each other, live ahealthy lifestyle, minimisestress, drink fresh greenjuices, don’t eat much sugarand eat salads daily.

“Life is cruisy now,” laughsJenny, referring to theirfrequent cruises up and downthe Indian Ocean.

“We’re doing what we lovebecause life is too short to beunhappy.”

During the month of October, the RAC, for the first timebranded two of their iconicyellow patrol vans pink tosupport the Cancer CouncilPink Ribbon Campaign.

RAC president, Esme Bowensaid: “For every breakdownthe pink patrol vans attendedduring October, we donated$5 to the Cancer Council’sWA Pink Ribbon Campaign.”

Breast cancer affects nearly15,000 women and around1235 men each year, the PinkRibbon campaign is aboutraising awareness of thisdisease among all WestAustralians.

Cancer Council's Pink Ribbonprogram helps to raiseawareness about breastcancer, as well as raisingfunds towards research, education and patient supportprograms.

This year, Cancer Council WAwas aiming to raise $740,000through Pink Ribbon Day,Girls’ Night In and PinkRibbon fundraisers to helpthose affected by breast or agynaecological cancer.

Nation pauses for Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day - 11thNovember, marked theanniversary of the armisticewhich ended the First WorldWar (1914 - 18).

Each year Australiansobserve one minute’s silenceat 11:00am on 11 Novemberin memory of those who diedor suffered in all wars andarmed conflicts.

It was 11:00am on 11November, 1918, that theguns of the Western Front fellsilent after more than fouryears’ continuous warfare.

The Allied armies had driventhe German invaders back, having inflicted heavy defeats

upon them over theproceeding four months.

In November, the Germanscalled for an armistice(suspension of fighting) inorder to secure a peacesettlement.

They accepted the alliedterms of unconditionalsurrender.

The moment hostilitiesceased on the Western Frontbecame universallyassociated with theremembrance of those whohad died in the war.

This first modern worldconflict had brought about themobilisation of over 70 million

people and left between nineand 13 million dead, perhapsas many as one third of themwith no known grave.

The allied nations chose thisday and time for the com-memoration of their war dead.

In Australia, on the 75thanniversary of the armistice in1993, Remembrance Dayceremonies again becamethe focus of nationalattention.

On the day the remains of anunknown Australian soldier, exhumed from a First WorldWar military cemetery inFrance were ceremoniallyentombed in the AustralianWar Memorial.

This special ceremony, whichstruck a chord across theAustralian nation re-established RemembranceDay as a significant day ofcommemoration.

Flowers have traditionallybeen laid on graves andmonuments in memory of thedead. The red poppy isstrongly associated withRemembrance Day.

The poem ‘In Flanders Fields’by Canadian officer, LieutenantColonel J M McCrae is apopular recitation.

McCrae was a professor ofmedicine at McGill Universitybefore the war.

A gunner in the Boer War, heserved as medical officer withthe first Canadian contingentin the First World War andwrote the poem at the secondbattle of Ypres in 1915.

McCrae was wounded in May1918 and died three dayslater.

At the Remembrance Dayceremony at the YanchepMemorial in the YanchepNational Park, students fromseveral schools attended theservice.

Some of the members of theYanchep RSL made 700 redpoppies and placed them inthe memorial garden.

On path to great futureIn the music classrooms at IreneMcCormack Catholic College(IMCC) the Year 7 studentscollect their instruments andmove straight into their groupsand begin rehearsing, all withoutprompting.

The students are motivated andengaged, learning songs theyknow and doing activities thatare relevant. The teachers actas facilitators, guiding andmodeling rather than instructing.Technique and musical notationare part of the learning process, but they are developed throughpractical playing rather than rotelearning.

“We all know that young peopleare passionate about music. Itplays a huge part in shapingtheir social identity” said IMCCHead of Arts, Michael Newton.

“Unfortunately, many studentsdon’t engage with music atschool, and this is detrimentalbecause a creative life is a goodlife. There’s also a significantbody of research that stronglylinks participation in music withenhanced academic outcomes.”

IMCC Music Departmentemploys the Music Futuresapproach to music education, first developed in the UK, to re-engage students throughclasses and activities that arerelevant and that the studentscan identify with and want to do.

“The best way to learn music isby making music.”

All music classes at IMCC, fromthe Specialised Music Courseclasses to the General Musicclasses, are based around theinnovative Musical Futures

approach. Musical Futuresbelieves music learning worksbest when young people aremaking music, and when theirexisting passion for music isreflected and built-upon in theclassroom.

IMCC is one of the first schoolsin Australia to use the MusicalFutures approach and has justbeen made one of the inauguralWA Musical Futures ChampionSchools.

As a Champion School, IMCCwill continue to drive innovationin music education and topromote, nurture and developbest music education practice,to the great benefit of theirstudents.

In a department that is warmand welcoming, it’s no surpriseto find students using the musicfacilities and resources at everyrecess and lunch to pursue theirown musical interests.

“The Music Department has anopen door policy. No matter theirability, from specialist music

course students to GeneralMusic students, they rehearse, jam, record, or practice. It’s avibrant and creative space, withlots of musical experimentationtaking place. It’s exciting forboth students and staff.”

Music education has the addedbenefits of providing studentswith a creative outlet, whileinstilling discipline, throughpractice, and improving self-confidence and a feeling of selfworth.

“Our central aim is for ourstudents to have the skills andmotivation to continue makingmusic when they leave school,in whatever form that may take.

“Our hope is that by gettingstudents actively involved inmusic and musical activity theywill continue to make music longafter they have left school, andcontinue to reap the benefitsthroughout their lives.”

RoundaboutSeveral residents in the StAndrews Estate have expressedconcerns about the lack ofsignage at the new roundabout atthe entrance to their estate.

The Sun City News approachedthe City of Wanneroo about thisissue - To date a response hasnot been received.

Fishermans HollowVisitors and locals who havebeen frequenting FishermansHollow since it was recently re-opened have noticed dying treesand grass in the park.

The City of Wanneroo told theSun City News: “The damagedtree located in Fishermans Hollowhas been removed.

“The tree, a Tamerix, caused thereduced growth of turf beneath itscanopy.

“As the tree has now beenremoved, the bare areas will bereturfed within the next 14 days.”

Parking problemsParking problems continue at therevamped new road systemthrough the Yanchep Lagoon.

On the very first day of ‘summer’with the temperature reaching 30degrees for the first time thisseason, the lagoon was popular,as usual - Many people werecomplaining that there were lessparking areas than previous.

The City of Wanneroo said: “Theoverall project for the realignmentof Brazier Road has providedmore parking than was previouslyavailable, with on-road andFisherman's Hollow parkingformalised. The northern car parkalso reopened last week, afterbeing closed during theconstruction period.”

Mayor Tracey Roberts added:“The proposed Yanchep Surf LifeSaving Club development willinclude formalisation andextension of car parking facilitiesand combined with the newlycompleted Brazier Road, willprovide 200 formalised parkingbays in the immediate YanchepLagoon area.

“Consideration in the overallredevelopment of the YanchepLagoon is not only to provide carparking facilities, but cater forhigher pedestrian usage andshared pathway systems,

combined with links to theproposed YSLSC facility andassociated redevelopment ofPicnic Cove.

“It is proposed to replace theexisting northern car park areawith a new permanent car parkfacility at a lower level, as part ofthe construction of the proposedYSLSC facility.”

The Sun City News understandsthe new surf club facility is notexpected to be constructed foranother two or three years.

The current Yanchep Surf LifeSaving Club facilities have beendescribed as one of the worst inWestern Australia.

Consumer Protection hasissued an alert after manyWest Australians desperate toget a loan have been dupedby online loan scams.

In the past twelve months, 13people have reported lossesof more than $25,000 afterapplying for loans online andthen being contacted byscammers. They are told theirloan has been approved andasked to pay fees upfront inthe belief that they would thenreceive their approved finance.

Commissioner for ConsumerProtection Anne Driscoll saidsome of the scammers arestealing the identity of

legitimate online moneylenders, adding to theconfusion of consumers.

“Many of the victims have hadtheir loan applications fromtraditional lenders rejected,so have widened their searchonline with the hope of gettinga favourable response,” MsDriscoll said.

“Their delight at finally gettinga personal or business loanapplication approved soonturns to disappointment andanger when they discoverthat they have beenscammed. Money for feesand insurance that they havebeen asked to pay upfront

have been lost and nofinance is forthcoming.

“These heartless scammersare again targeting peoplewho are in desperatecircumstances and in afinancial position where theycan least afford to lose money.

“We recommend consumersonly deal with licensed creditproviders and ensure they areusing official websites andemail addresses of theseregistered companies, ratherthan replying to what may bea scam email, clicking on linksin these emails or clicking ononline ads which may takethem to fake websites.

“A request to pay fees upfrontand transfer the money tooverseas bank accounts or bywire transfer services is anindication that the loan offermay be a scam, so besuspicious and get advicefrom Consumer Protection orASIC before proceeding.”

Business Network to hold itsfirst networking event

Who says there is no suchthing as a free lunch? Notthe newly formed YanchepTwo Rocks BusinessNetwork that's for sure.

The Yanchep Two RocksBusiness Network (YTBN)will hold its inauguralnetworking event at theYanchep Central ShoppingCentre at 6:30pm Wednesday26 November. The event isfree and open to all localbusinesses that RSVP.

“Networking events allowbusinesses to not only sharetheir respective knowledgeand experience but alsoallow for informal mentoringand capacity building”. Mr.Kelly added.

Mr Kelly agrees that broadbased business networkshave struggled to survive inthe locality over recent yearsbut believes that with thesupport of YBJV the time wasright for such an initiative.
