PLE-SUN-01 Elucidating receptor tyrosine kinase-dependent signaling in

neural circuit assembly and plasticity Ip, Nancy (The Hong Kong University of Science and

Technology, Hong Kong)

Professor Nancy Ip

Professor Nancy Ip is currently the Dean of Science, Chair Professor of the Division of Life Science, and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). She received her PhD degree in Pharmacology from Harvard Medical School, and was Senior Staff Scientist at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals

Inc., New York. Since joining HKUST in 1993, she has served as Associate Dean of Science (1998-2005), Director of the Biotechnology Research Institute (1996-2008), and Head of Biochemistry Department (2000-2009). Professor Ip is a world-renowned neuroscientist with primary interest in brain development and drug discovery for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. She is well known for her discoveries in the biology of neurotrophic factors, which are proteins that promote the survival, development and maintenance of neurons in the nervous system. She is also internationally recognized as a leader in elucidating the molecular signaling mechanism at synapses, where nerve cells communicate. Given the association of synaptic dysfunction with the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases, her findings provided important clues for the development of therapeutics for these disorders.

MONDAY 4 FEBRUARY 2013

From 07:30 REGISTRATION Location: Main Foyer 08:30 - 09:30 PLENARY 2

LAWRIE AUSTIN PLENARY LECTURE Chair: Professor Pankaj Sah, Queensland Brain Institute, QLD Location: Plenary Hall 2 PLE-MON-02 Colour vision, colour blindness, and importance of an eye for

detail Martin, Paul R. (University of Sydney, NSW)

Professor Paul Martin

Paul R. Martin received his PhD in Physiology at Sydney in 1986. Following postdoctoral work in Germany, in 1992 he joined Faculty at the University of Sydney. From 2003 to 2010 he was Director of Research at the National Vision Research Institute of Australia and the University of Melbourne. He returned to Sydney in 2010 to take up his current appointment as Professor of Experimental Ophthalmology. Paul's abiding research interest is signal processing in nervous

systems. His research programs have addressed how signals from receptors in the eye are fed into separate brain pathways which underlie the red-green and blue-yellow axes of colour vision. Because defects in colour vision are an early sign of blinding diseases such as glaucoma, basic experiments such as these can improve our understanding of visual dysfunction, as well as revealing the basis of the colour sensations which so enrich our perception of the world. Results of these scientific experiments have been published in over 70 papers in scientific journals and several textbook chapters.

PLE-MON-03 Deciphering the epilepsy genome and its impact on clinical practice Scheffer, Ingrid (Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, VIC)

Professor Ingrid Scheffer

Professor Ingrid Scheffer is a paediatric neurologist and epileptologist at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Her work together with Professor Sam Berkovic, with the molecular geneticists at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adelaide, has led the field

of epilepsy genetics research over the last 21 years. This collaboration resulted in identification of the first epilepsy gene and more than half of the genes currently known. Professor Scheffer has described many novel epilepsy syndromes and continues to work on genotype–phenotype correlation. Professor Scheffer’s research interests include genetics of epilepsy, epilepsy syndrome classification, and genetics of autism spectrum disorders and speech and language disorders. She was awarded the 2007 American Epilepsy Society Clinical Research Recognition Award, the 2009 Eric Susman Prize from the Royal Australasian College Of Physicians and she was awarded the L’Oreal-UNESCO Women in Science Laureate for the Asia-Pacific region for 2012. Professor Scheffer is currently Chair of the International League Against Epilepsy Commission for Classification and Terminology

PLE-TUE-04 Food on the brain Morris, Margaret (University of New South Wales, NSW)

Professor Margaret Morris

Margaret Morris is chair and Head of Pharmacology, School of Medical Sciences, UNSW. She completed her PhD at Monash University in 1983. After postdoctoral work in Adelaide and Paris she took an academic appointment at Deakin. In 1995 she moved to University of Melbourne, where she began exploring the brain mechanisms involved in food intake and metabolism using animal models of obesity

and diabetes. In 2005 she joined UNSW where she teaches in Medicine, Optometry, Medical Science and Science. An author of 160 papers and reviews, her current research addresses critical questions concerning the impact of adverse early life events and lifestyle factors on chronic disease risk. Using neuropharmacological approaches, she explores underlying CNS mechanisms in epilepsy, obesity, diabetes, and the link between obesity and hypertension. Research in the Morris lab showed a palatable high fat diet can ameliorate the behavioral effects of early life stress. Current NHMRC funded work includes intergenerational transmission of obesity and the psychology of eating, e.g. how does provision of a varied, energy rich diet override the regulatory control mechanisms should maintain body weight?
