MES celebrates World Teachers’ DayMES Indian School celebrated

the World Teachers’ Day with enthusiasm and zeal

to show acknowledgement and rec-ognition of the noble service rendered by the teachers towards the development of students.

Special assemblies were con-ducted in all sections of the school, in which students glorified the teaching profession that is marked with higher virtues such as nobil-ity, perseverance and sacrifice besides highlighting the importance of teachers in the lives of students.

To get hands-on experience of teaching, the students of Grade XII replaced teachers for the first period and handled classes in Classes IX, X, XI and XII.

Senior students also donned as well as assumed roles of Principal, Heads of Sections and various other key officials of the school to address students on issues like students’ dis-cipline, time and stress management

in the school assembly. They also took a decision that

they would endeavour to improve students’ discipline.

Hameeda Kadar, school Prin-cipal, complimented the role of teachers and said that this is an occasion to celebrate and highlight

the contributions made by teach-ers, from pre-primary through higher education for the develop-ment of younger generation.

International Day of Non-violence events at Bhavan’s Public School

International Day of Non-vio-lence was celebrated in all the three campuses of Bhavan’s

Public School with zest and favour on October 2.

Special assemblies were held in all the campuses. Patriotic songs were sung by the well groomed

school choir. Dance drama, quiz, drawing

and writing activities were also conducted in which the students were urged to dive in the life of the great leader.

The impersonated Gandhi and the Gandhians displayed with

patriotism skits which gave the students a deep insight into the life of Gandhi.

The morals depicted by the three wise monkeys inspired them to speak no evil, hear no evil and see no evil.

Students at New Salata

Campus were given a taste of cooperation and sense of involve-ment when they enacted the Dandy March with in the campus.

The sixth graders at Matar Campus spoke to all junior stu-dents in the campus about Peace and vowed to be the Brand Ambassadors of Non-Violence which transcended far beyond the celebrations.

M P Philip, school Principal, marshalled the students to the rays of Indian History through his enlightening words and empha-sized them to idolise the principles of Gandhi’s life.

Shailaja Krishnakumar and Asha Shiju, Headmistresses, in their address to students gave a deep insight into the life of Gan-dhi and encouraged them to strive hard to inculcate the values of non-violence and truth and imbibe his lifestyle.

We may not be able to pre-pare the future for our children, but we can at

least prepare our children for the future. The best way to predict the future of our children is to invent it. That invention lies in right parent-ing. It is the key to getting our children prepared for tomorrow.

Most parents are stuck with the heritage bag they carry which they draw freely from when it comes to parenting and disciplining their own children.

Parents, especially young ones, overlook the ‘generation gap’ that acts as a challenge in the right way to parenting. It is rightly so in these times when our children are soaked in social media and travel on infor-mation superhighway at breakneck speed, and they are, as it were, con-genitally tech savvy.

Parents have the notion that they have had the ‘right upbring-ing’ from their parents and that there is nothing besides the lessons that they have had in their paren-tal tutelage in raising their own kids.

Something that they overlook

here is the fact that in their parents’ time, they were raised in joint fam-ilies, and in course of time, tradition has given in to ‘nuclear families’ removing almost altogether the diverse learning opportunities chil-dren could have had in the past. To make matters worse are the tor-rential changes that have come over the life style of people with the advent of the internet, the cyber-space, technology and artificial intelligence.

In retrospect, today’s parents are wiser and reckon that their parents could have raised their

children in a better way but could not do it because they did not have the privilege of having the advantage of the knowledge explosion which parents are immersed in today and, hence, today parents can raise their children better than their prede-cessors did.

Young parents of today recall their childhood with dissatisfac-tion not so much for the deprivation of what was essen-tial but for the overwhelming pampering they have had from their parents.

The myths and challenges of parenting

COVER STORYSUNDAY 8 OCTOBER 2017 05

Recently, I was the resource per-son at a workshop on ‘Parenting’ designed for parents of children between the ages of three and five and shared with them a few tips and I received an overwhelming response. I summarize the tips below for the benefit of all:

1) Every child learns from home as the family is the first school of life and parents the child’s first teachers. I spoke to grade 2 child and it said, “Sir, when my father returns home from work, my mother receives him with love and affection and gives him a glass of water with a smile on her face. But, when I come from school, my mother always asks me why my uniform is dirty and soiled.”

What parents, especially the mother at home, need to do is to give them unconditional love. Your kids require you most of all to love them for who they are, not to spend your whole time trying to correct them. They keenly observe, listen and see what is going on in the family and learn from it. Parents should receive their children with the same kind of love and affection as they show each other.

So, mothers, please give your son or daughter a glass of water on their return home from school, help them unburden themselves, help them unwind and relax. Find good-ness in them and tell them how great they are! If you do so, you will have made their day. Studies will follow.

2) Fathers, the most precious gift you can give to your child is your ‘quality time’. When your child knows that you live for him or her,

the child will spontaneously open up before you. When s/he knows that he/she is your first love, she/he will intimately describe and narrate her/his story of the day. Every day they will look forward to it. It will also serve as a platform for devel-oping language skills, confidence, knowledge building and many more. The best way to keep children at home and to make them feel at home is to make the home atmos-phere pleasant, and let the air out of the tires. Give them positive feedback.

So, fathers, please fix an appoint-ment with your kid, talk to him/her everyday about ten minutes. Its advantages are many such as con-fidence building, cementing trust, improving speaking skills and lay-ing the road to future growth on stable values.

3) We all know that there are no perfect homes and so, no perfect parents. There can be minor slugfests at home between parents occasionally. These add a special charm to holy matrimony. But, par-ents must be very careful not enact these scenes in front of their chil-dren. Most things are good, but there are evil things too, and you are not doing your child a favor by fighting in their presence. As children are the best mimics, parents’ must exercise extreme caution in not washing their dirty linen before the tender minds. It might provide children scope for imitating a bad example! The impor-tant thing is to teach a child that good can always triumph over evil. The fourth lesson, in brief, is: Parents- never argue, shout or fight in the

presence of children. They will mis-takenly learn that the best way to solve a problem is to fight. Resolve your differences in private!

4) If you raise your children to feel that they can accomplish any goal or task they decide upon, you will have succeeded as a parent and you will have given your children the greatest of all blessings. Parents, therefore, let us ensure that children start the day eating breakfast com-pulsorily. In Qatar, some students get into the bus as early as 5 a.m. and skip breakfast. They start school at 7 a.m. and get to eat the first food of the day about 8.20 a.m. I believe stu-dents should start their day with breakfast at 7 a.m. I am contemplat-ing a compulsory breakfast period of 15 minutes right at the start of the school time dedicated to eating breakfast soon after morning assem-bly. The little ones embarking on studies use up energy, and once the store is exhausted, the body starts to draw on the arterial blood for it. Soon the child feels drained out and cannot pay attention to the lesson or the teacher. It affects the child twofold, its studies and its physical strength. The lesson is: Let us make our children eat a healthy breakfast before we ensure they study well.

5) If you can control your behavior when everything around you is out of control, you can model for your children a valuable lesson in patience and understanding and snatch an opportunity to shape char-acter. Few outsiders can do it for you. (There may be exceptions). While doing so, it is important that no ‘for-eigner’ or ‘outsider’ goes too close

physically to your child, especially, an ‘uncle’, a ‘friend’ an intimate ‘neighbor’, or/and even a close ‘rel-ative’. Teach your child about the ‘good touch’ and the ‘bad touch’. Some in this category are notorious for their demoniac pedophiliac ten-dencies. They are depraved perverts. Let us be vigilant against such depravity and perversions inflicting any damage to our children’s body and mind. The lesson is: teach your child about good touch and bad touch and give it the courage to speak to you , should anything go wrong.

6) Don’t let your maid change clothes or give a bath to a school going child. (Maintain privacy always).

7) Ask your child to stand in front of a mirror and hold his tie and say

“I am the best” everyday. ( This improves self-confidence).

8) Children reciprocate what you give them - say “good “, they will reciprocate “very good “. If you say

“very good “ he/she will reciprocate excellent.

9) Don’t consider your child a stage performer to perform in front of guests. (They will be more shy and get guest phobia).

10) Never talk bad about your child’s teacher (s) or school in front of them. (This will create a bad atti-tude towards the teachers/school).

11) Ask the opinion and sugges-tions of your child while taking decisions whenever possible. (This improves self-esteem).

FOOD SUNDAY 8 OCTOBER 201708Ellie Krieger The Washington Post

This recipe is my spin on a favorite from the very first cookbook I owned: the

“Moosewood Cookbook,” by Mol-lie Katzen (Ten Speed Press, 1977). That book, which I still have - its cover sun-bleached and pages spattered - fed me throughout my college years and beyond. One dish from it that I made again and again was the simply named Cheese-Beans, a savory, chili-seasoned bake of red beans, fresh tomatoes, chunks of sweet apple and cheese. Lots of cheese.

That heavy cheesiness is one reason I had not made it in years. But I found myself hankering for the dish recently, so I decided to take a fresh look at it and find a way to achieve its comforting, flavorful essence in a more healthful way. I’m sure glad I did, because now this sumptuous bake is officially back in my life.

My strategy was not to elim-inate the cheese; it is an essential element that brings all the ingre-dients together as it melts, and it provides an unmistakable sumptuousness. But here, it is a supporting player rather than the lead. That’s reflected in the name I gave it. I flipped it, putting the beans first and Jack

- as in Monterey Jack - at the fin-ish. I kept the apples, tomatoes and seasonings from the origi-nal recipe, but upped the vegetable ante with a few hand-fuls of chopped kale, which fit in so seamlessly it was like it belonged there all along.

I also made the recipe more convenient by cooking it all in one Dutch oven rather than

transferring the mixture to a cas-serole dish. The resulting stew is simple autumnal goodness, a tasty tribute to the past with a sensibility that’s just right for today.

Chili Bean Apple Jack Stew6 servings (makes 7½ to 8

cups)From registered nutritionist

and cookbook author Ellie Krieger.

Ingredients2 tablespoons olive oil1 large onion, diced (1½ to 2

cups)2 teaspoons chili powder1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt

1 teaspoon powdered mustard

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

4 cups packed chopped baby kale leaves

Three 15-ounce cans no-salt-added red kidney or pinto beans, drained and rinsed (about 5 1/4 cups)

2 large Golden Delicious or Jonagold apples, unpeeled, cored and diced

4 medium tomatoes, diced4 ounces (1 cup) packed

grated Monterey Jack cheeseStepsPreheat the oven to 350

degrees. Heat the oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Once the oil shimmers, stir in the onion and cook for about 3 minutes, until translucent.

Stir in the chili powder, salt, powdered mustard and pepper. Add the kale; cook for about a minute, stirring, until the greens have wilted.

Remove from the heat; stir in the beans, apple and tomato. Top with the cheese. Cover and bake (middle rack) for 35 to 40 minutes, until warmed through, the apple is tender and the cheese has melted.

Serve warm.

You may know a skillet hash as the last stop for leftover spuds. But I encourage you

to pick up a few pounds of but-tery-tasting, yellow-fleshed potatoes just for this version. They become tender within a half hour without any pre-cooking, yet they will hold their shape and allow for those money-shot crisped edges.

This hash is simple, and it relies on the flavor imparted by a smoky sausage and fresh rosemary. Keep-ing a vacuum-packed link on hand

- we used a turkey sausage here - seems like a good plan for omnivores who like the tastes of fall. You could easily build on that theme by adding chopped apples with a touch of maple syrup. Or roasted Brussels sprouts and an

Instagrammable fried egg. There’s something to be said,

though, for letting the basic trio of potato, meat and onion stand on its own.

One-Skillet Sausage and Potato Hash

4 to 6 servingsLeftovers taste great cold or

warmed up in a skillet next to sunny-side-up eggs.

Yellow-fleshed potatoes will taste nice and buttery. But waxy red potatoes will work as well; see the VARIATION, below.

Serve with a salad.Adapted from “The Farmhouse

Chef: Recipes and Stories From My Carolina Farm,” by Jamie DeMent (University of North Carolina Press, 2017).

Ingredients2 pounds Yukon Gold or Dutch

Baby Gold potatoes

3 small or 2 medium onions1/4 cup grapeseed oilKosher saltFreshly ground black pepper13 ounces smoked Polish tur-

key sausage Leaves from 2 stems

rosemaryStepsScrub the potatoes, then cut

them into 1/2-inch chunks. Coarsely chop the onions.

Heat the oil in a large cast-iron skillet over high heat. Once the oil shimmers, stir in the potatoes and onions to coat. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring several times to avoid scorching. Season with a good pinch each of the salt and pepper.

Meanwhile, cut the sausage on the diagonal into 1/4-inch slices. Finely chop the rosemary.

Reduce the heat to medium;

stir in the sausage and half of the rosemary. Cook for 10 to 12 min-utes, stirring often to keep the sausage from scorching, until the sausage and some potatoes are crisped at the edges. Add the remaining rosemary in the last minute or two of cooking. Taste and season with more salt and/or pepper, as needed.

VARIATION: If you’d like to use red-skinned potatoes, cook them with the onions for the initial 10 to 12 minutes, then add 1/2 cup water to the pan; once the water has evap-orated (and the potatoes are more tender), continue with the recipe as directed above.

HEALTH SUNDAY 8 OCTOBER 201710Lisa Rapaport Reuters

Severely obese people who undergo surgery to shed excess pounds may have lower odds of developing cancer than they would with-

out the operations, a recent US study suggests.Researchers examined data on almost

89,000 extremely obese patients, including roughly 22,000 who had what’s known as bar-iatric surgery to lose weight between 2005 and 2014. After an average follow-up of 3.5 years, 2,543 people got diagnosed with cancer.

Compared to people who didn’t have bari-atric surgery, patients who did were 33% less likely to develop any type of cancer during the study. They also had 40% lower odds of being diagnosed with tumors that are associated with obesity.

“Lowering the risk of cancer is just another reason to consider bariatric surgery for the treat-ment of obesity,” said lead study author Dr. Daniel Schauer of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

“There are many other good reasons to have bariatric surgery including improvements in dia-betes and high blood pressure,” Schauer said by email. “It has also been shown to improve life expectancy for obese patients.”

Cancer is a leading cause of death world-wide, and the prevalence of obesity has more than doubled during the past generation. Peo-ple who are obese have a greater risk of developing and dying from several types of can-cer including malignancies of the breast, ovary, kidney, pancreas, colon, rectum and bone mar-row, previous research has found.

Obese people often struggle to shed excess pounds or keep weight off when they do lose it. Lifestyle changes such as following a healthy diet and getting regular exercise can often help in the short-term but fail to produce lasting results, particularly among people who have more than 100 pounds to lose before reaching a healthy weight.

More than half of bariatric surgeries done today use what’s known as sleeve gastrectomy,

which reduces the stomach to the size of a banana, according to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. People are typ-ically advised to eat portions about the size of a shot glass after the operations.

In the current study, only about 27% of sur-gery patients had sleeve gastrectomy procedures. The majority had what’s known as gastric bypass surgery, which staples the stomach to create a pouch the size of a walnut and reroutes part of the small intestine.

More than 80% of patients in the study were women.

With bariatric surgery, women who had gone through menopause had 42% lower odds of developing breast cancer than women who didn’t have operations. Women who had surgery were also 50% less likely to have endometrial cancer.

In addition, people who had weight loss sur-gery were 41% less likely to develop colon cancer and 54% less likely to get pancreatic cancer.

When researchers looked at men and women separately, however, they didn’t find any link

between bariatric surgery and cancer risk in men.One limitation of the study is that the aver-

age follow-up period was too brief to capture many cancers that can take years to develop, making it possible that the results underesti-mate the impact of bariatric surgery on cancer risk, researchers note in the Annals of Surgery.

The optimal amount of weight loss for reducing cancer risk is also unclear, said Dr. Bruce Wolfe, a researcher at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland who wasn’t involved in the study.

But only about 2% of severely obese people get bariatric surgery each year, and the study results suggest more people might benefit from the operations, Wolfe said by email.

“This study clearly shows that cancer risk can be reduced by weight loss,” said Dr. Gra-ham Colditz, a researcher at Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis.

“Choice of approach to weight loss should balance the underlying risk of cancer and the level of obesity.”

Bananas and avocados can prevent heart diseasesIANS

Eating one banana and an avo-cado a day may prevent hardening of the arteries that

can result in heart disease and death, researchers have found.

The study, conducted on mice, showed these foods that are rich in

potassium reduces vascular calci-fication -- common complication in both heart and kidney disease.

Calcification happens when calcium builds up in body tissue, blood vessels, or organs. This buildup can harden and disrupt your body’s normal processes.

A potassium rich diet also

reduces the risk of aortic stiffness -- a classic cardiovascular risk fac-tor. The hardening or stiffening of the arteries is called arterioscle-rosis. The stiffness of arteries influences how hard the heart has to work to pump blood through the body.

“The findings have important

translational potential, since they demonstrate the benefit of ade-quate potassium supplementation on prevention of vascular calcifi-cation in atherosclerosis-prone mice, and the adverse effect of low potassium intake,” said Paul Sand-ers, professor at the University of Alabama.

BOLLYWOODSUNDAY 8 OCTOBER 2017 11Vidya Balan wants all her films to do wellIANS

Actress Vidya Balan says she is “very greedy” when it comes to the perform-

ance of her films. The National Award winning

actress was present at the Jio MAMI Movie Mela yesterday, and said: “I want all my films to do well in theatres first and then do good in festivals, I am very greedy that way. One film just won’t do me any good.”

Vidya also spoke about being inspired by Iranian movies, which she feels are simple and big-hearted. Her own forthcom-ing movie “Tumhari Sulu” is on similar lines.

“I have watched a lot of Ira-nian movies at (previous editions of the) MAMI film fest and they inspired me a lot. The storytell-ing and performance in those movies were very simplistic, but the films were with a very big heart. I just hope I get to do more of those kind of movies. I feel my upcoming ‘Tumhari Sulu’ is one of those kind of movies.”

According to Bhandarkar’s spokesperson, the film will pre-miere on October 14 under the Short Film Showcase Section at the Festival, followed by an interactive session with the acclaimed

director and celebrated Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke.

The story of “Mumbai Mist” revolves around an emotional bond between a child rag picker from a Mumbai slum and an old man. The characters are played by Master Devrath and Annu Kapoor respectively.

“Where Has time Gone” will offi-cially release in China on October 19.

Filmmaker Kundan Shah passes awayIANS

Filmmaker Kundan Shah, who gave Indian cinema a differ-ent brand of humour with

the cult black comedy “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” and subsequently tel-evision shows like “Nukkad” and

“Wagle Ki Duniya” with the ‘aam aadmi’ at the centrestage, died here early yesterday, a family member said. He was 69.

“He died in his sleep early in the morning,” his relative said.

Satish Kaushik, who wrote dialogues for “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” and acted in it, said Shah suffered a cardiac arrest.

Shah’s last rites will be held at Shivaji Park in Dadar West yes-

terday evening. The filmmaker, hailed by the

Indian film fraternity as a “mas-ter storyteller”, would have turned 70 on October 19.

His tryst with learning about film direction began at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. Just last week, he was at the institute for an event. He had even paid a tribute to actor Tom Alter, who died on Septem-ber 29, and had spoken about a tentative script that he wrote for a part two of “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro”, his debut directorial which came out in 1983.

In an interview, Shah had said he had applied for a loan of Rs 400,000 to make the movie, but then the production cost went up and finally it was made at a budget of Rs 725,000 as the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) came on board as producer.

“Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” narrated a tale of two simple and honest photographers, who witness a murder and get dragged into the corrupt real estate circle where politicians and bureaucrats are involved. The film, laced with slapstick comedy, didn’t fetch good box office, but achieved cult status with time.

He had received his first and only National Film Award - Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director - for it. This was the same award that Shah had returned to the Ministry of Infor-mation and Broadcasting during the student protests in FTII in 2015 over Gajendra Chauhan’s appoint-ment as its chairman.

Bon Jovi & Radiohead among Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees

Reuters

“Livin’ on a Prayer” rocker Bon Jovi, British singer Kate Bush and influential

English alt-rock band Radiohead were nominated on Thursday for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on a list heavy with British artists.

Eight of the 19 nominees for 2018 induction, including 1980s rock band Dire Straits, electro-pop band Depeche Mode and progres-sive 1960s rockers the Moody Blues

- best known for “Nights in White Satin” - are British musicians.

Artists must have released their first recording at least 25 years ago to be eligible for nomination.

Music fans and industry experts will vote on the list, which will be reduced to five or six Hall of Fame inductees whose names will be

announced in December. The 2018 induction ceremony will take place in Cleveland in April.

Posthumous nominations this year included American blues singer-songwriter and activist Nina Simone, 1940s gospel singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the J. Geils band, whose founder J. Geils died in April, and 1950s American guitarist Link Wray.

Other nominees included Brit-ish heavy metal band Judas Priest, British 1980s duo Eurythmics, US rapper and actor LL Cool J and The Cars.

The inductees are chosen by fans voting online and by an inter-national body of more than 900 artists, historians and members of the music industry who are asked to consider musical influence, inno-vation, and length and depth of career.

92 countries vying for foreign language OscarAFP

A record 92 countries have entered the race hoping to snag an Oscar for best foreign language film at

next year’s awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced.

Among the contenders that have cre-ated a buzz this year is Angelina Jolie’s

“First They Killed My Father” from Cam-bodia, Robin Camillo’s “BPM (Beats Per Minute)” from France, Ziad Doueiri’s

“The Insult” from Lebanon and Joachim Trier’s “Thelma” from Norway.

Swedish art world satire “The Square,” directed by Ruben Ostlund, was the shock winner at the Cannes Film

Festival this year and is also among the contenders.

First-time entrants include Haiti (“Ayiti Mon Amour”), Lao People’s Dem-ocratic Republic (“Dearest Sister”) and Syria (“Little Gandhi”).

Last year’s Oscar for best foreign lan-guage film went to Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s “The Salesman.”

Farhadi boycotted the ceremony over US President Donald Trump’s visa ban barring citizens of seven Muslim-major-ity countries, including Iran, from entering the United States.

Nominations for the 90th Academy Awards will be announced on January 23 and the glitzy ceremony will be held on March 4 in Hollywood.

Chinese state

media report

bloated battery

in iPhone 8Reuters

A fresh case of Apple Inc’s (AAPL.O) new iPhone popping open

due to a swollen battery has been reported in state media in China, the world’s biggest smartphone market where the US firm is seeking to revive faltering sales.

The incident comes as Apple investigates similar cases reported in Taiwan and Japan of batteries in its lat-est iPhone 8 Plus becoming bloated, causing the device’s casing to open.

On its website, China’s state-backed ThePaper.cn cited an iPhone buyer sur-named Liu as saying his newly purchased iPhone 8 Plus arrived cracked open on October 5. There was no sign of scorching or an explosion.

Liu told ThePaper he bought the handset through online marketplace of JD.com Inc (JD.O). He said he did not charge the new device and returned it to the seller.

Pictures taken by Liu and displayed on ThePaper’s website showed an iPhone 8 plus split open along the side featuring the sim card hold-ing, with the phone’s internal parts visible.

An Apple spokesperson said the company is looking into the matter and declined to comment further.

The incident comes as indifferent reviews of the iPhone 8, which comes 10 years after Apple released the first version of the revo-lutionary phone, drove down shares of the company since the handset’s launch.

Alphabet Inc’s Google unveiled the second gener-ation of its Pixel smartphone

recently, along with new voice-enabled home speakers, redoubling its commitment to the hardware business as it competes with a surge of devices from Apple Inc and Amazon.com Inc.

Google’s new products, includ-ing a Pixelbook laptop, wireless earbuds and a small GoPro-like camera, showcase Google-devel-oped operating systems and services, notably the voice assist-ant. That means usage of those devices should stoke the compa-ny’s core ad sales business as buyers of the hardware use Google services like search and maps.

Speaking at the launch in San Francisco, Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh said the new prod-ucts “perfectly demonstrate our strategy of re-imagining hardware from the inside out.”

The Pixel 2 smartphone comes in two sizes, with comparable fea-tures, including aluminum bodies and no traditional jacks for head-phones. Prices for the base model start at $649, while the high-end version starts at $849. The phones will be available October 19.

The Pixel phones lack the brand

lustre and market share of simi-larly priced smartphones such as the Apple iPhone or Samsung Elec-tronics Co’s Galaxy S and Galaxy Note smartphones. Still, the origi-nal Pixel’s camera and software drew acclaim from reviewers, many of whom expect the line to become a robust competitor at the high end of the Android smart-phone market.

Pixelbook, priced at $999, is the first laptop powered by Google Assistant and will support Snap Inc’s Snapchat, the company said. The keyboard folds behind the screen to turn the 12.3-inch touch-screen into a tablet. It will be available in stores from October 31.

Google Home Mini, one of the new speakers, is priced at $49 in the United States and would rival Amazon.com Inc’s popular Echo Dot. It will be available October 19. The Home Max, with dual woofers for more powerful sound, is priced at $399 and with availability by the end of the year.

The Pixel Buds, which are priced at $149, arrive in Novem-ber. Clips, which is pocket-sized camera with object detection and automatic recording capabilities,

“soon” goes on sale for $249, Google said. Videos last only a few seconds and do not contain audio.

The Pixel smartphone debuted

a year ago, with analysts estimat-ing sales of more than 2 million, pushing Google to record amounts of non-advertising revenue.

Google’s “other” revenue cat-egory, which includes both hardware and sales of online stor-age services, accounted for about 12 percent of overall sales in its most recent quarter.

Last month, Google expanded its hardware development capa-bilities by picking up a 2,000-person smartphone engi-neering team at HTC for $1.1bn.

“It’s pretty clear Google is seri-ous about hardware,” said Avi Greengart, research director at consumer data firm GlobalData.

“Given that there is a Pixel 2, and given the financial investment, there must be a longer-term stra-tegic intent.”

Google moved into smart-phones five years ago with the $12.5bn purchase of Motorola Mobility. But Motorola’s hardware team, under Osterloh, and Goog-le’s Android mobile operating system division remained inde-pendent. Google wanted to avoid giving it a special advantage and protect its relationships with Sam-sung, LG and other distributors of Android. The company later sold the Motorola smartphone business.
