a 501(c)(3) public charity.

Board: Terry Winkelmann, Founding Director

Beth Lewandowski, Vice President & Social MediaLori Strawbridge, Treasurer

Attendance Prizes Donated By:Audubon Society, BeeBarns, Brightside St. Louis,

EarthDance Organic Farm School, Green Spiral Tours, Hartford Coffee,

Kitchen House Coffee, Local Harvest Grocery, OK Hatchery,Slow Food St. Louis, Urban Chestnut Brewing Co.

If you haven’t regIstered to attend yet, you still can wIn prIzes just by letting us know you attended this year’s tour!

Welcome to the original sustainable living tour! Not just a garden tour, the Sustainable Backyard Tour is where we stand together to build a kinder, healthier and more resilient community.

Each yard you visit today is one small knot in a vast net that spreads across the world. It is a net that connects and sustains us all as we work together to rebuild and preserve healthy ecosystems. Every household that composts, installs solar panels, plants Missouri natives, or simply chooses organics over chemical fertilizers and herbicides, grows that net ever stronger!

More than 40 hosts welcome you today. Ask ques-tions, take pictures, make notes! There is no start-ing point. Make your own route using the map as a guide, or download the BatchGeo version from our website. We suggest you choose addresses close to home, as they will have similar conditions, resources and ordinances. This is a rain or shine tour, so be prepared for both.

Thank you for caring and learning; have a great time! Sincerely,

Terry Winkelmann, Tour Founder and the 2018 Organizers

What’s a Watershed?

Everything drains somewhere! That simple fact is why there are islands of plastic in the ocean that are the size of small states, large dead zones where rivers outlet to the ocean, and even why there are fish kills and algae blooms in your neighborhood creeks or lakes. The way water moves over land is just like how a bathtub drains, it all eventu-ally flows to the lowest point, taking pollutants with it as it goes.

Protecting our watersheds, big and small, can start with our own backyards. Practices such as watering wisely or xeriscaping help con-serve water while rain gardens and reducing impervious surface areas help reduce the amount and rate of stormwater runoff.

Safely Dispose of Old Pesticides & Fertilizers

Many conventional lawn and garden products are considered House-hold Hazardous Waste because they contain chemicals that are toxic, corrosive, flammable or reactive. Pouring these products down the drain, on the ground, into storm sewers, or in some cases putting them out with the trash can harm the environment and endanger our health. Increasingly, there are safer, alternative products like corn gluten and diatomaceous earth that you can use instead. For a safe-on-vegetables bug spray, make your own using Dr. Bronner’s Pepper-mint Soap. But if you have old home & garden products lying around, make an appointment to dispose of them at one of these St. Louis Household Hazardous Waster facilities:

Visit www.hhwstl.com to learn more.

The Dirt on Soil

The ground you walk on is so much more than dirt. There’s an entire ecosystem under your feet. More organisms live in a handful of healthy soil than there are people on the planet. That life in the soil…microbes, fungi, nematodes, insects…supports the life above it…from the crops we grow for food and fiber to the trees we cut for timber. It even sequesters carbon and is literally ground zero for medicines like penicillin, derived from a fungus found in soil.

There are many ways we unintentionally destroy that ecosystem. Till-ing your garden, for instance, destroys soil’s structure--water doesn’t infiltrate, compaction increases, nutrients can’t flow, and the whole soil web is compromised.

That’s why more and more farmers are turning to no-till agriculture and cover crops. You can practice the same in your own garden by only minimally disturbing the soil and keeping something growing on it at all times. Bare soil is dying soil.

Get the Most Out of Playing In the Dirt

test your soil before amending it or adding chemical fertilizers. University of Missouri Extension will test your soil so you know exactly what you do, and don’t, need to add to your soil to improve it. See the link on our website or call 314-400-2115.

Compost your kitchen scraps and yard waste and not only will you never have to buy bags of soil again, you’ll have rich organic matter to feed your garden and lawn. There are many ways to compost and entire books on choosing the right system for the right time and place. But in the end, it’s easy: Compost happens!

CaLL Before You dig – Electric, gas, water, sewer, telephone and cable lines are buried everywhere and some are only an inch or two below the ground. Planting a tree or installing a rain garden can damage underground utilities, so always call before you dig! One call, at least 2 working days prior to digging, notifies all utilities that will then mark underground lines so that you can dig safely.

Missouri one Call 1-800-dIg-rIte (1-800-344-7483). plus, it’s the law.

Support for this booklet provided by The St. Louis County Soil & Water Conservation District. The St. Louis County Soil & Water Conservation District

is funded in part by the 1/10 of 1% Parks & Soils Tax.

MSD Project Clear is the initiative to improve water quality and alleviate many wastewater concerns in the St. Louis region. This program will reimburse qualified

homeowners, schools, churches, government, and businesses (within a specific geographic area) up to $3,000 to install rainscaping solutions, like rain gardens and rain barrels, on their property. Check www.projectclearstl.org/rainscaping for more details. (314) 577-0202 | [email protected]

RGlossary Composting: A great way to transform kitchen and yard waste into free, nutrient-rich fertilizer.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW): Herbicides, pesticides, cleaners, & solvents that are corrosive or toxic and may catch fire, explode, or react with other chemicals creating a risk to people and the environment. A sustainable backyard replaces these products with natural, organic substitutes.

Hugelkulture: Raised, no-dig beds wherein woody debris forms the basis of mounded compost piles which can then be planted with annual food crops like squash.

Naturescaping: Using native plant species and the character of the land to create an arrangement that appears naturally occurring and provides similar ecosystem services.

Native plants: Evolved in concert with the climate and growing conditions of a place, often with deep, fibrous root systems that make the soil more permeable, sponge-like and able to absorb rainfall.

Permaculture: A landscape & living design philosophy that partners food, water, energy and people within a balanced & healthy biological community.

Pollinators: Bees, wasps, butterflies, and other creatures essential to the reproduction of the vast majority of flowering plants, fruit trees, and most food crops.

PV: Photovoltaics are devices that take energy delivered in the form of light photons and converts it to energy in the form of electricity, i.e. Solar energy.

Rainscaping: Pairing plants and water control practices like catch basins, bioswales or pervious pavement, to encourage stormwater to slow, spread, and sink in close to where it falls.

Rain Garden: A landscape that slows the flow of rainwater runoff by using elements similar to those that occur in nature-- plants, stone, shallow swales and depressions that catch and hold rain.

Vermicompost: A way to compost indoors using earthworms to breakdown kitchen waste to create a type of fertilizer called worm castings.

Xeriscaping: Landscaping that helps conserve water by using plants that require little or no irrigation and are suited to a sunny, dry site.

Sustainable Backyard: One that causes minimal harm to the environment in its creation or maintenance and contributes positively to the health of people and planet.
