TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading - Elisha promises a baby son to the hospitable woman (2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a).

Psalm - For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 89).

Second Reading – We shall live in newness of life as Christ was raised from the dead (Romans 6:3-4, 8-11).

Gospel - Whoever gives but a cup of cold water to another will surely be rewarded (Matthew 10:37-42).

CHRISTIAN HOSPITALITY Day in and day out, we are required to make judgment calls informed by tough, durable, serviceable Christian love. We do what we can do, and God takes notice. God is in charge of rewards, and a glass of water will do when that is what we have to offer with a glad and open heart. Paul gives us a clear theology for the mission-ary work we do whenever anybody is close at hand. He reminds us that our work, our minis-try, is carried on in concert with Christ. We have been baptized into his death and life. In any given moment both life and death are there, a kind of play of shadow and light. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell where shadow leaves off and light begins. God will take care of that, too.

Names remain on our list 2 months and then are removed. Call the office 702-298-0440 when the health of you or your loved one has improved or if a name needs to be re-moved.

For many years, on page 3 of our bulletin, we have listed the names of relatives and friends for whom prayers have been requested. While we try to keep that list updated, some of the names have remained there for years and occasionally we learn that one or several have died years ago. The list is re-ally designed for those in immediate and serious need of the prayers of our parishioners and visitors.

Also, in view of the current privacy laws in our nation, indi-viduals may not wish to have their names published at all. We have tried to be careful about this and respect their privacy. We must continue to do so.

In an effort to accomplish the goals of keeping the list cur-rent, immediate, and within the privacy laws, a completely new list will be begun on the first weekend of July 2020. No names will be carried over from the current list. Only members of a person’s immediate family (parent, child, sibling, grandparent) or the person himself/herself may add a name to the list by submitting the name in writing and signing that you have permission to add the name. Names will remain on the list for 2 months and will then be removed automatically. If you wish to renew a name on the list for another two months, you will need to notify the church office one week before the name expires.

ST. JOHN’S PRAYER CHAIN If you want a particular petition prayed for, please call Yvonne Fatherree at 702.298.0690.

RCIA: RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS

RCIA is a process of instruction (catechesis) for those adults that are con-sidering God’s call to become Catholic. Through RCIA, the church extends an invi-tation to those who have no association with a community of faith or want to con-vert from another faith. Within the same process RCIA provides an opportunity for baptized Catholics, who wish to complete their sacrament of confirmation.

For further information, please call: 702-726-7014.

BASIC CATHOLIC PRAYERS

OUR FATHER Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hal-lowed be Thy Name; Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into tempta-tion, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

HAIL MARY Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death Amen.

ACT OF CONTRITION O my God, I am heartily sorry for hav-ing offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heav-en, and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

GLORY BE TO THE FATHER Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

St. John the Baptist Catholic Church P. O. Box 31230, Laughlin NV 89028 Letter #15 Tuesday, June 23, 2020 Dear Parishioners and Friends – Well, folks, here we are doing Letter #15 in our weekly pandemic series! I never imagined we would be doing this for so long! But people seem to be en-joying these letters, and I love writing them! Looks like we will have to keep the res-ervation system going for a few more weeks. The weekend Masses are all at the church during June. Saturday even-ing at 4PM and at 6PM; Sunday at 8AM, 10AM, and at 12 Noon. Only 50 people are allowed by order of the Governor of Nevada. Reservations must be made by calling the church office at 702-298-0440 on Thursday or Friday between 9AM and 3PM. Do not leave a message, you must speak to a real person and make your reservation for one of the weekend Masses. Only up to 3 seats may be reserved. At church, you must wear a mask and have your temperature tak-en. 100.4 is the allowable limit. Church doors will be opened 15 minutes before each Mass. Weekday Masses are at 8AM on Mon-day, Tuesday, and Friday. No reserva-tions are needed for the weekday Mass-es. The limit will be the first 50 people. The Sunday Mass will be posted on our website LaughlinCatholic.com and on our Facebook page Laughlin Catholic by 8AM on each Sunday morning so you can be part of our virtual congregation anytime after 8AM on Sunday.

THURSDAYS WITH CHARLIE will be posted on our website and Facebook page at 1PM each Thursday for your enjoyment. REMEMBER: In case of an emergency, Father Charlie can be reached on his cell phone at 702-580-4988. Regular messages can always be left at the parish office number: 702-298-0440. The office is open 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM, Monday-Friday, and the church is now open for individual private prayer during the same office hours. At a time like this, I encourage every-one to pray the Spiritual Holy Commun-ion Prayer frequently.

Spiritual Holy Communion Prayer

My Jesus, I believe that You are pre-sent in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul and body. Since I cannot at this mo-ment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart, into my soul, and into my body. I embrace You as if You were already there. And I unite myself entirely to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. THE GARCES CENTER Construction is continuing beautifully on our new building, and we are very grateful for the stream of donations for it that keep coming in. Bob Bilbray took a wonderful video of it with his drone and you can see it on our web-site, on our Facebook page. Please en-joy the wonderful progress! Contribu-tions, small or large, are always appre-ciated.

“See You In Church”

DISPENSATION

Bishop George Leo Thomas has extend-ed the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass indefinitely. This ap-plies to all Catholics living in or visiting anywhere in the Diocese of Las Vegas. The bishop has also written a letter about racism which can be read on the diocesan website. PASCHAL, THE PARISH OWL

The construction noise seems to have bothered Paschal, but he has been spotted nearby, and even left us a feather in our parking lot. I’m sure he will be back by our church really soon. Our welcome mat is always out for our favorite owl! THE IMPORTANCE OF HISTORY

“If you don’t know history, then you don’t know anything. You are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree.” - Michael Crichton

“A generation which ignores history has no past and no future.” - Robert Heinlein

This past weekend, in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, brutal mobs destroyed several historic statues. Among the statues was an image of a Catholic saint! Saint Junipero Serra was a Spanish Franciscan missionary priest who devoted his life to bringing the pa-gan tribes to Christianity. He person-ally founded nine of the 21 California missions. He was a contemporary and a friend of our beloved Father Francisco Garces. To the present iconoclastic

mobs, nothing is sacred—not even the memorial of a saint! May God protect us in these strange times! Saint Juni-pero Serra, pray for us!

ENCLOSURES

So many people have commented on the enclosures inserted in these weekly let-ters! I suspect that many refrigerator doors are filling up with them! Here are a few more. ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL PRAYER

For many years, this was prayed at the end of Mass to fight off evil in the world. The fight against evil still con-tinues. If you would like additional cop-ies, please stop by church. I bought a few hundred extra copies!

METRO STRONG

St. Michael the Archangel is the patron saint of law enforcement so I hope you will pray for the men and women of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Depart-ment (METRO). They provide essential protection for our church and for all of Laughlin. And please be sure to pray for all in law enforcement in all of your states and local communities. Defend the police seems more helpful than de-fund the police. I cannot imagine what society would be like without law en-forcement actively protecting us.

HOT WEATHER IS COMING!

It does get warm here in paradise! Sometimes we want to explain to our friends and relatives in other parts of the country just how hot it gets here. Well, you can just show them the en-closed weather forecast! That should pretty much explain it all!

Have fun! Have a happy summer season here in paradise!
