TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — The law was given through Moses (Exodus 20:1-17 [1-3,7-8,12-17] or Exodus 17:3-7.

Psalm — Lord, you have the words of everlasting life (Psalm 19) or Psalm 95.

Second Reading — We proclaim Christ crucified; the foolishness of God is greater than human wis-dom (1Corinthians 1:22-25) or Romans 5:1-2,5-8.

Gospel — Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up (John 2:13-25) or John 4:5-42,[5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42].

TOTAL ALLEGIANCE

In previous weeks we have seen how the theme of covenant-as a preparation for the baptismal cove-nant celebrated at Easter-occupies an important place in our cycle of Lenten readings. The notion of covenant as a relationship between two parties car-ries with it an expectation of mutual accountability and fidelity to the terms of the covenant. When God forged the covenant with the Jewish people on Mt. Sinai, it was a pledge of God’s protection, and it would forever permit them familiar access as the Chosen People. For their part, the Jewish people were to observe the dictates of the law, summa-rized most succinctly here in the form of the Ten Commandments. To be in covenantal relationship with the Lord God requires an exclusive relation-ship, just as discipleship with Jesus-ritualized in baptism-demands a total allegiance to him and none other.

PRAY FOR THE HEALTH OF SICK RELATIVES AND FRIENDS

PLEASE CALL SJB OFFICE TO INSERT NAMES ON THIS PAGE OF THE BULLETIN!

Read Paragraph 5 (underlined and in bold)

for specific information/instruction.

Irene Ainsworth - Marianne and Bob Blanks -Brenda Don Carlos - Aidan Brown - Alicia Denley - Sylvia Manzilla - Jeff and Kim Moniz - Todd Perdon - Amalia & Sam Quesada - Margarita G. Tamayo - Barbara Tonecha - Terry Ulibarri - Linda Williams

Names remain on our list 2 months and then are removed. Call the office 702-298-0440 when the health of you or your loved one has improved or if a name needs to be re-moved.

For many years, on page 3 of our bulletin, we have listed the names of relatives and friends for whom prayers have been requested. While we try to keep that list updated, some of the names have remained there for years and occasionally we learn that one or several have died years ago. The list is re-ally designed for those in immediate and serious need of the prayers of our parishioners and visitors.

Also, in view of the current privacy laws in our nation, indi-viduals may not wish to have their names published at all. We have tried to be careful about this and respect their privacy. We must continue to do so.

In an effort to accomplish the goals of keeping the list cur-rent, immediate, and within the privacy laws, a completely new list will be begun on the first weekend of July 2020. No names will be carried over from the current list. Only members of a person’s immediate family (parent, child, sibling, grandparent) or the person himself/herself may add a name to the list by submitting the name in writing and signing that you have permission to add the name. Names will remain on the list for 2 months and will then be removed automatically. If you wish to renew a name on the list for another two months, you will need to notify the church office one week before the name expires.

FEAST OF FAITH Postures of the Mass

In the Mass, we pray not only with our lips, but with our bodies as well. We stand when the minis-ters enter. In Western culture, standing is a sign of attention, a mark of respect; all stand when the judge enters the courtroom, for example. Standing is also an ancient posture of prayer, mentioned frequently in the Old Testament. When the read-ings begin, we sit down: a listening posture. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet to listen to his teaching; the crowds sat on the hillside or the seashore to hear his words. Kneeling is another posture that is full of meaning. It expresses adoration and worship, but it can also express humility and contrition. We bow: a sign of honor and reverence, acknowledging the presence of God, especially when we receive the Eucharist. And there are other ritual gestures as well-striking the breast, genuflecting, and of course making the sign of the cross. The liturgy invites us to pray with our whole person-with heart and mind, voice and body. I, the LORD, am your God...You shall not have other gods besides me. Exodus 20:2a, 3

Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to all practicing Catholic gentlemen 18 years or older. K OF C NIGHTLINE NEWSLETTER

St. John Paul II witnessed that when a society at-tempts to close the door to religion, it inevitably falls prey to a totalitarian reading of the human person that recognizes only the state as the ulti-mate arbiter of right and wrong. It is our duty as men of both Catholic faith and patriotism to resist militant secularism and to defend religious liberty at the international, national, state, and local lev-els. Without this necessary check on the power of the state, no principled limit can be recognized to prevent the expansion of government’s power at the expense of personal liberty.

INITIATION OF ADULTS RCIA is a process of instruction (catechesis) for those adults that are considering God’s call to become Catho-lic. Through RCIA, the church extends an invitation to those who have no as-sociation with a community of faith or want to convert from another faith. Within the same process RCIA provides an opportunity for baptized Catholics, who wish to complete their sacrament of confirmation.

For further information, please call: 702-726-7014.

BASIC CATHOLIC PRAYERS

OUR FATHER Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hal-lowed be Thy Name; Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into tempta-tion, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

HAIL MARY Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death Amen.

ACT OF CONTRITION O my God, I am heartily sorry for hav-ing offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heav-en, and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

GLORY BE TO THE FATHER Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

DEDICATION OF THE GARCES CENTER

Bishop George Leo Thomas has a very busy schedule so the earliest oppor-tunity he can come to Laughlin to dedicate the Garces Center is Sun-day, October 10, 2021. We will have the ceremony with the bishop at 2:00 PM on Columbus Day weekend. Incidentally, our church was dedicat-ed on October 11, 2003 also on Co-lumbus Day weekend. It will be a beautiful celebration! Also, after each of the weekend Masses on March 6th and March 7th, Father Charlie will do a brief tour of the Garces Center for anyone inter-ested. Just follow Father Charlie at the end of Mass. We are so very proud of our new building and the priest from our past whom it honors. STATIONS OF THE CROSS We will have Stations of the Cross each Friday of Lent at 6:00 PM. No reservations are needed, but we will take your name, phone number and temperature when you arrive. ST. THERESE CENTER FOR HIV/AIDS-We have small collection boxes available during Lent if you would like to save your coins in them to donate to the important work done through the St. Therese Center. THE WORD AMONG US is a much loved resource for readings and pray-ers. Extra copies are available at the church for the season of Lent.

YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH - Pope Fran-cis has declared a special year in honor of St. Joseph, extending from December 8, 2020, to Decem-ber 8, 2021. There are special blessings and indulgences available throughout the year. Our March newsletter will have much more spe-cific information about this along with a beautiful prayer card com-memorating the year of St. Joseph. Watch for the newsletter late next week. CATHOLIC STEWARDSHIP APPEAL (CSA) - Each year every parish in the diocese of Las Vegas is assessed an amount to be contributed to the support of diocesan programs based on previous parish offertory collec-tions. We do a regular second col-lection once or twice a month to meet this assessment and are grate-ful for your generosity. Also, we have sent a separate mailing about this to those who have generously supported it in the past. Donations for the CSA may be sent directly to the diocese or given through the parish in the envelopes provided to you throughout the year. HOLY WEEK AND EASTER-We do not yet know what restrictions will be in place for Holy Week and East-er. We will share that information as soon as we receive it. CONFESSIONS are heard by Fr. Charlie 20 minutes before each Mass or you can set up a time to meet with him.

“See You In Church”

LENT 2021 We are almost halfway through Lent this year. And on March 17th, we mark one year since the “great shutdown” took place in our great American nation. We had all heard bits and pieces about a horrible vi-rus coming from China, but none of us ex-pected the worldwide proportions it would take. We were forced to sacrifice some of the most cherished American freedoms in the hope of “flattening the curve.” Contrary to our Constitution, our churches were shut down and closed for worship in person. Families were denied the right to be with loved ones even as death approached. So much sadness, but so much hope and crea-tivity too. Americans found ways to at least stay somewhat connected, churches found ways to reach out by letters, phone calls, emails and videos. Eventually even the Supreme Court weighed in on the side of Constitutional religious freedom. Gover-nors and mayors who grossly overstepped their legitimate authority are gradually be-ing called to account for their actions. We’re still wearing masks, but all is not hopeless. There is a brighter future ahead as we mark this one year anniversary of the pandemic. Whatever else is happening, I hope you are doing something for Lent. “Age aliquid!” is the Latin phrase for “Do anything!” And we all should be doing something for Lent to bring us closer to becoming those people God wants us to become. More than half of Lent is still ahead of us. HOPEFULNESS As I said at Mass last weekend, there are two things we should always remember: 1.God always keeps His promises! It may take longer than we expect, it may happen in a different way than we expect, but it is going to happen. God always keeps His promises.

March 7, 2021 St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Page Seven

2.Good is always stronger than evil, and in the end good is going to win! We need to be patient...patient with ourselves, patient with others, patient with God. As St. Thomas Aquinas, whose feast day used to be March 7th, writes: “Evil is the absence of good where there should be good.” Eventually evil will be overcome by good. COLORADO RIVER HOLY WATER In honor of Fr. Francisco Garces, for whom our new building is named, we have blessed and packaged special containers of holy water using water from the Colorado River, the very same source of water that Fr. Garces used for blessings and Baptisms almost 250 years ago. Each bottle also contains chips of real precious turquoise which was revered by the local tribes as a sign of peace, health and life. One bottle was given to each guest at the Blessing Ceremony this past Thursday after Fr. John McShane and I had offered the blessing along with our two parish deacons. We cannot sell the holy water because it is blessed, and a blessed item cannot be sold. But if you would like one, a donation of $3.00 will cover the cost of the com-memorative bottle and the turquoise chips. Anything extra will be given to the Garces Center. If you would prefer to bring your own wa-ter in your own containers, Fr. Charlie will be happy to bless the water at no charge. Not a bad idea to keep some holy water in our homes in these tumultuous time. TIGER MASS Tiger Mass will be celebrated each Friday of Lent at 6:00 AM for those who are as tough as tigers to be up that early in the morning. No reservations needed, but we will take your name, phone number and temperature when you arrive.
