Sundays and Beyond at Saint Mark’s Cathedral Sunday, August 7- Pentecost 8 Dear Ones, What is a vacation without photographs? These days, with digital ease, I can frame and shoot quickly, discarding the images that fail to capture the moment. On Monday there was an especially beautiful sunrise in Phoenix and I took many wonderful shots in- cluding the very moment the sun peaked over Camelback Moun- tain. One image stood out it was a mistake, I’m not even certain how it happened jagged edged mountains and blazing gold and salmon streaked sky had been replaced with an ethereal view of the morning, soft, hazy, dreamy, smoky blue mountains beckoning in the distant desert sky. The image was blurred and my first instinct was to push delete but as I looked at it one more time, I couldn’t let it go there was something mystical about it, something I knew about the desert that is so easily missed in the apparent stark and barren land a transformative quality of light that surprises and opens one’s eyes to a different reality. A mystery, a paradox, a parable, the possibility that in this stark and often barren life, there is, as Parker Palmer reminds us, a hidden wholeness. This hidden wholeness, this image that beckons us to look more deeply at our lives and calls us to see with new eyes, is a unique gift from God. On this earth, only we humans can see in this way the way of consciousness and introspection that is transformative. It is our greatest gift and so often squandered as we rush through this life. Over the next two months, we are hosting an international exhibit of icons and sculpture by acclaimed abstract expressionist Ludmila Pawlowska. Traditional Russian icons and Ludmila’s dramatic interpretation of them, offer us a wonderful opportunity to see with new eyes and to experience the hidden wholeness of our life together in this sacred space. The series is called Icons in Transformation and you are invited to be part of the experience. The art will engage our space and we will be engaged as a worshipping community to see with eyes of transformation. Ludmila, her husband Jan and daugh- ter Sylvia will be with us for the next two weeks, preparing the exhibit. Many helpers and volunteers are assisting and next week we will train docents who will share Lud- mila's vision with our guests. Please note that there are many opportunities to volun- teer. Find more on our website at www.saintmarks.org/ComingEvents/icons.php . The Cathedral will hold these images and serve as a beacon of hope to a world that feels increasingly stark and barren. Four major events will highlight the series and Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) will be the recipient of any funds raised from the sale of art or free will offerings for work in South Sudan, Nets for Life and Wine into Water. From the Gala Opening on Saturday evening, August 13 at 7:00 PM to our interfaith event Remembering 911 to the daily rhythm of coming and going, Saint Mark’s will become a living icon for the city of Seattle, our doors open to seek- ers of every kind. This Sunday many changes will be obvious to host such an exhibit is a monumen- tal task and we will quickly discover what patterned creatures we are (see if you can find the Peace Shrine). It is a good thing to see with new eyes but remember, don’t push delete too quickly, you might miss a moment of transformation! Sundays and Beyond at Saint Mark’s Cathedral Sunday, August 7- Pentecost 8

Dear Ones,

What is a vacation without photographs? These days, with digital

ease, I can frame and shoot quickly, discarding the images that

fail to capture the moment. On Monday there was an especially

beautiful sunrise in Phoenix and I took many wonderful shots in-

cluding the very moment the sun peaked over Camelback Moun-

tain.

One image stood out – it was a mistake, I’m not even certain

how it happened – jagged edged mountains and blazing gold and salmon streaked

sky had been replaced with an ethereal view of the morning, soft, hazy, dreamy,

smoky blue mountains beckoning in the distant desert sky. The image was blurred

and my first instinct was to push delete but as I looked at it one more time, I couldn’t

let it go – there was something mystical about it, something I knew about the desert

that is so easily missed in the apparent stark and barren land – a transformative

quality of light that surprises and opens one’s eyes to a different reality. A mystery, a

paradox, a parable, the possibility that in this stark and often barren life, there is, as

Parker Palmer reminds us, a hidden wholeness.

This hidden wholeness, this image that beckons us to look more deeply at our lives

and calls us to see with new eyes, is a unique gift from God. On this earth, only we

humans can see in this way – the way of consciousness and introspection that is

transformative. It is our greatest gift and so often squandered as we rush through

this life. Over the next two months, we are hosting an international exhibit of icons

and sculpture by acclaimed abstract expressionist Ludmila Pawlowska. Traditional

Russian icons and Ludmila’s dramatic interpretation of them, offer us a wonderful

opportunity to see with new eyes and to experience the hidden wholeness of our life

together in this sacred space.

The series is called Icons in Transformation and you are invited to be part of the

experience. The art will engage our space and we will be engaged as a worshipping

community to see with eyes of transformation. Ludmila, her husband Jan and daugh-

ter Sylvia will be with us for the next two weeks, preparing the exhibit. Many helpers

and volunteers are assisting and next week we will train docents who will share Lud-

mila's vision with our guests. Please note that there are many opportunities to volun-

teer. Find more on our website at www.saintmarks.org/ComingEvents/icons.php.

The Cathedral will hold these images and serve as a beacon of hope to a world that

feels increasingly stark and barren. Four major events will highlight the series and

Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) will be the recipient of any funds raised from

the sale of art or free will offerings for work in South Sudan, Nets for Life and Wine

into Water. From the Gala Opening on Saturday evening, August 13 at 7:00 PM to

our interfaith event Remembering 911 to the daily rhythm of coming and going,

Saint Mark’s will become a living icon for the city of Seattle, our doors open to seek-

ers of every kind.

This Sunday many changes will be obvious – to host such an exhibit is a monumen-

tal task and we will quickly discover what patterned creatures we are (see if you can

find the Peace Shrine). It is a good thing to see with new eyes but remember, don’t

push delete too quickly, you might miss a moment of transformation!

Also this Sunday, special friend of the Cathedral and Seattle native, the Reverend

Dr. Lucas Mix will preach. Lucas is both priest and an astrobiologist, serving as

chaplain and adjunct faculty at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Please welcome

all our guests this Sunday!

Blessings,

Gratitude Gatherings are almost over (have you

been to one yet?)

We’ve had about 20 events

all across the region this

summer, from West Seattle to Bellevue,

Ballard to Capitol Hill. Guess what…there

are just three Gratitude Gatherings left!

We have a “maple” theme on Sunday

afternoon Aug. 7—one is in Maple Leaf

Park and one is in Maple Valley!

The food and fun theme finishes with a

flourish, with a Make-Your-Own Ice

Cream Sundae party on Sun. Aug. 14 in

Ballard. No one is exactly sure who came

up with the original idea of an ice cream

sundae, but what a great idea it is!

Bring your own family friendly topping,

and join in the fun! Gratitude

Gatherings are sponsored by Saint

Congratulations to the „Wine into Water‟ committee! On July 16,

73 people had a great time at a wine tasting at Diocesan House. The

wines chosen for tasting were excellent and the food was plentiful and

delicious. "Quiet Monkey Fight", an improve group, had everyone

laughing and Brian Sellers-Petersen inspired all with stories about the

work of Episcopal Relief and Development. To date $4,500 has been

raised from the event (with a few more gifts yet to come). Saint

Mark's has given a total of $10,000 to ER-D's work for clean water and

sanitation– but there’s work still to do because the goal is $15,000

which would make three wells possible. Why not help the children of

the parish in their ―Mile of Pennies” campaign?

Sunday Forum with the Rev. Joan Anthony Got questions about the call

process? Joan is the Canon to the Ordinary at the Diocese and works with all

parishes of the Diocese in transition. On Sunday, August 14, she will be in

Bloedel Hall at 12:30 to discuss and answer questions.

From the Parish Profile Committee:

Those of you around last Sunday after the 9:00 and 11:00 services saw our

videographer Nell Grey hard at work doing short interviews with

parishioners while others were busy filling out the questionnaires available at

the back of the nave. All this will be possible again this Sunday, August 7

at 8:45 to catch the 8:00 crowd and again after the 9 and 11 on

Sunday, August 14. But this week we want to call your attention to the

FORUM possibilities this coming Sunday after the 9 and 11 services, and

again at 6:30 on Thursday evening, Aug. 11. These occasions are great

opportunities to give further feedback to the Profile Committee around a key

question as we think about the qualities we are looking for in our next

Dean. So here’s the question we will ponder together:

Based on your experience of Saint Mark‟s in the recent past, and on

your hopes for the next 3-5 years, what are the qualities you most

want to see in our next Dean?

Note: the more specific and thoughtful your responses at the Forum the

more specific we can be as we write the Profile of the cathedral which will in

turn be used as we advertise for candidates. For example, certain things we

can take for granted: we want a good preacher. We want a good

fundraiser. Our hope is to move beyond these generalities and –bearing in

mind the self-reflection we’ve done as a parish over the past few years --

explore more deeply and honestly those qualities most needed as we move

into the next phase of our life together.

We hope to see you there.
