Dear Friends in Christ:

Rally Sunday was an exciting day for our

church. Our Sunday School and Confirma-

tion Programs are up and running. We

heard from our Sunday School adults

about the program this year. We also had

an opportunity to hear from our youth

who, with support from EKLC, went to Bi-

ble Camp this year. We heard an invitation

to our High School Youth to the National

Youth Gathering in Mpls next summer.

And we held up the work of our quilters

and blessed the work of their hands as they

prepared to send the quilts and kits to Lu-

theran World Relief.

The work and life of the church continues

even though we are still struggling with

COVID. Because of vaccine hesitancy, we

have not been able to stop the spread of

this vicious disease and we are back to

wearing masks in indoor spaces. We had

so hoped that this fall we could really think

about getting small groups of our adults

together to study and reflect. I know that

there is interest in Adult Bible Study. But

with distancing, wearing masks, and not

being able to share a meal or even a cup of

coffee, that just is not able to happen.

Your safety and ours, comes first.

But if 2020 taught us anything, it is that

the church will find a way to share the

Word of God! It might not be what we

would prefer or be familiar with, but we

will figure out a way.

So, in this newsletter we are introducing a

4 part Bible Study/Faith Five Experience.

We are going to use the wonderful materi-

al that the Confirmation Program has used

at EKLC for a number of years now. It is

from Faith Inkubators out of Stillwater,

MN. Faith Inkubators has, as its goal, to

help children, families and adults grow in

their faith. They use a tool called the

Faith Five: 1. Sharing Highs and Lows 2.

Reading a Bible verse or passage 3. Dis-

cussing how that Bible passage speaks to

our highs and lows 4. Praying for each

other and our world 5. Blessing each

other.

The Confirmation students will be study-

ing the Old Testament this year. So that

is where we will begin. Each of the 4 Bi-

ble Study’s will focus on a chapter of the

material and will include the Faith Five.

We invite you to do this Bible Study/Faith

Five with your families, with a friend, over

the phone, or in person. If we have inter-

est, we can even talk about a Zoom Bible

Study/Faith Five experience.

Join with our confirmands and take part

in growing in your faith and your

knowledge of the Bible! Check out the

Bible Study in the Newsletter!

President’s Message

This month’s entry is a vacation edition, light on content. See you in Oc-

tober!

Looking back:

• Our Community Café was a great success. Special thanks to Brenda

Schroeder for organizing, the Veeley Family for cooking the pork, all

those who supplied food/money, and those that worked. This is a

great way for East to help out the larger community

• What a great turnout for Rally Sunday! Parents and kids enjoyed all

of the work that our Sunday School leaders put into the day.

• The build a bouquet fund raiser sold out! Thanks to all of those who

participated.

• Our second outdoor service of the year was on 9/26. Thanks for all

of those who helped with organizing, setup, take down, and partici-

pating in special music.

• Thanks to Nathan and Bobbie Stach for working on the flower beds

in front of the Upper Church. They make our grounds look great!

• In the last year we’ve received several generous donations to our

investment fund. Thanks to those families whose funds will help

grow our congregation in the future.

Looking ahead:

• Our synod continues to look for pastoral candidates for us. While we

wait for candidates, please participate in listening sessions, surveys,

and conversations about who we are as a congregation and the kind

of pastor who should help guide us.

October Congregational Challenge

Matthew 7:7 “Ask and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find.

Knock, and it will be open to you”

I’m no biblical scholar, but this verse speaks to me right now. I think it is

about how we need to be active participant in our faith and our lives with

God. The more we do, the more we have returned to us. We cannot sit

back and just hope something good happens.

In our time between called pastors, it is easy for us to sit back. To wait to

make decisions, wait to take steps forward, wait to start new initiatives.

Instead God calls us to continue to act. To move forward together as a

congregation.

We need ideas for how we can grow in this interim period. What doors

should we knock on? What help should we provide for our neighbors?

What initiatives should we start?

Looking forward to hearing your ideas. Send them to me or Julie.

Stay well.

August 17th, 2021 EKLC Council Meeting Minutes Meeting was called to order at 6:15 pm. Those in attendance were Kristen Lien, Jaime Lewellin, Oren Hammes, Kim Tim-ler, Nathan Stach, Linda and Loren Schumacher and Jason Schlieckau. Devotions- Oren: Paul’s letter to Corinthians, Chapter 13 Financial updates, Profit/Loss statement, Money Market ac-count, Memorials. No additional memorials in July but there will be some com-ing in this month. Camp scholarships were paid from Christianson fund. Edward Jones fund back to $900, which is the normal amount. July profit loss- general offering on target and the same as last year but down from 2019. Expenses down too. Net income in negative for this month. There was a large amount in snow removal but this was due to all hours turned in at once. Aug to this point is a little behind on giving. We are at 13,006 and this time last year was 15,617. PPE loan- no forgiveness info yet. Still waiting. Envelope box ordering will be reduced slowly. Continue to push Vanco as this will slowly reduce envelopes as a result. The replies Julie gets from the survey will be taken off the list of envelopes, and Julie will order the balance. Motion to approve financial reports made by Oren, seconded by Jamie, passed. Review of Minutes from July meeting. Motion to approve Minutes made by Jason, seconded by Or-en, passed. Christine Anderson web site developer topic --Kristen signed her contract. Month to month fee is $150/month. Education Committee Minutes discussion: Kristen’s help wanted post this month will be focused on an adult education position. Sunday school teachers indicated that they’d like to have a parent help out on and off with Sunday school. Worship Committee discussion: Per Vicki, no choir going forward, but leave line item in budget since we hope to have a choir again. Outdoor service scheduled for Sept 26th. Comments about no coffee hour. Why do some people get to use the fellowship hall and others not? This will be discussed later in the meeting. Personnel Committee Discussion: Chris and Jaime did an exit interview with Debbie. The rec-ommendation is that we repost the position soon. Pastor’s report: Confirmation teachings discussion, and how the kids will be split amongst the pastors. There are currently no kids showing interest in the youth gathering trip. Call committee and survey discussion. Discussed the contin-uing role of the Call committee throughout the call process. Looking to have this committee meet more frequently and continuously review the church profile. A motion made by Jaime to approve reports and seconded by

Kim, accepted and passed. Old Business Thank you topic discussion. Considering doing a monthly “unsung hero” instead of sending multiple thank you cards. The unsung hero would focus on one member per month and the contributions they make to the congregation and church. They would be recognized with an article in the monthly newsletter. In-person worship topic discussion: Mask mandate in effect for 8/19/21. Kristen to send updates to Julie for new mandates. Discussion on opening the base-ment for coffee hour. If we are going to continue to follow the science and try and protect our congregation, then we need to continue to hold off on coffee hour. Nothing is scheduled after this Saturday for use of space. Now that masks are required again, Jaime has signs made and will for-ward to Julie. Only open spaces to be bathrooms, starting Sunday, unless previously approved. Office phone discussion: We will proceed with the Ooma phone solution. We will be able to test this solution side by side with existing Frontier service for a month to assure call quality. When we are hap-py with the new service we will cancel most of the frontier service, leaving only the dedicated elevator line, which is re-quired by law. New Business It was requested that the June Ramberg memorial be applied to Undesignated Memorials or WELCA funds, and not the general fund. Wedding and funeral liaison topic discussed. This is a posi-tion that serves as a liaison between couple/family and church. The position is paid by the family, but is not a paid position. Duties might include getting meals ready, setting up picture boards, making sure candles are lit, doing walkthroughs with the family, answering any questions and opening up/locking up the church after events. Payment is usually $100 to $150 per event. GODS WORK OUR HANDS: Not enough time to start anything this year, but examples like the upcoming outdoor service is representative that the church is alive and functioning, even in these times of COVID. Erica also has a couple of nice service projects planned such as fundraiser of selling flower bouquets. Brenda is planning and coordinating Community Café. Mon-ey should come from Undesignated Memorials if needed. Consider doing a separate Zoom Council meeting for the Constitution updates. Recommendation from Personnel Committee came in during this Council meeting, that we post the position for Youth Di-rector as soon as possible. Per the committee, they are work-ing to update the job description and we will post as soon as the description is revised and completed. Confirm next meeting: September 22, 6:15 PM (Devotions – Nathan) Adjourn at 7:56PM - Motion made by Jaime, seconded by Oren. Close with Lord’s Prayer Submitted by Jason Schlieckau

News from the church basement....

Thank you to Joy Circle for providing help in Sep-tember, and to Light Circle for October. Our next Pin and Sew will be on Thursday, October 7, at 8 AM. Again, we will have our business meeting over coffee at mid morning. This usually happens at 9:30. Please plan on having a representative from your circle attend as we will be planning the 2022 Women of the ELCA Handbook for EKLC. Per-haps sometime soon we will be able to resume our lunches together.

We have been busy this year, when the rules al-lowed! building, tying and sewing quilts, and put-ting kits together to send to Lutheran World Re-lief. At this point the exact number of quilts fin-ished is not known to me, but hopefully will come in around the 80 mark. We packed 136 school kits and 16 personal care kits. Thanks to the confirma-tion class for helping get the boxes packed, weighed, and labeled for shipping, and to Heidi for delivering them to the rail yard. We have already begun working on the next generation of quilts! Thanks, also to those who gave money to help pay for the shipping.

Thank you to our loyal Meals on Wheels deliver-ers. Some of you were relieved of duties this time because of a Covid problem at the restau-rant. Thank you for your willingness to serve our community in this way. Our next delivery time is weekdays, from December 6 through 17.

Enjoy the autumn weather.

God Bless you.

Education Committee Dates

Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, at 7:00 p.m.

Totals from packing Sept. 15th for the Women of the ELCA of EKLC (with the help of the confirmation class) was: Quilts 126, school kits 126, personal care kits 16, sewing kits 3.

Sunday School will be in person all year and will abide by the mask mandates that are in place.

We will try to do as much outside as possible.

Some sneak peeks into the 2021-22 Sunday School Classes!

The ELCA Youth Gathering is just a

year away! Want to go and have an inspiring

experience?

What is it? The Gathering is a 4-day inspiring faith formation event where 35,000 Lutheran high schoolers from all over the country come together to learn, interact, worship, have fun, and serve together.

Where is it? This time, the Gath-ering will be held in Minneapolis. Our Synod will transport us to Minneapolis and within Minne-apolis/St. Paul by charter bus.

Who can go? Youth who are currently going into 8th – 12th grades.

Cost: About $1200 per person. That sounds like A LOT, I know. But we hope to fundraise most, if not all that cost. We’re asking each youth to contribute $100 as a deposit.

Some Specifics: We’ll be gone from Saturday, July 23- Thurs-day, July 28.

We’ll be housed in Twin Cities area hotels with churches from our synod.

Each day will be a different fo-cus. There will be a Service Learning Day, an Interactive Learning Day, and a Synod Day. Each evening will be a Mass Gathering at the US Bank Stadium, where we’ll learn, worship, and hear incredi-ble speakers and musicians from all over the world. It’s an incredible experience, and a whole lot of fun.

“I want you to know all about Christ’s love, although it is too wonderful to be measured. Then your lives will be filled with all that God is.” Ephesians 3:19

Introductory Information

Dates:

Saturday, July 23 (bus to Minneapolis) – Thursday, July 28, 2022. Gathering begins the evening of July 24.

What will we be doing?

Meeting and getting to know youth from our church, our synod, and all over the country. Service Learning Day – a day of doing a service project or learning about important issues in the Minneapolis area. Synod Day – Gathering with all the youth in our synod for conversations, activities, music, and wor-ship together. Interactive Learning Day – A day spent in a conference center with dozens of exhibits, games, activi-ties, and meaningful opportunities like donating blood and donating hair, putting together personal care kits, helping to build a Habitat house, etc. Mass Gatherings – Each day will end with speakers and worship with 35,000 people in a sports are-na. One of the most meaningful experiences of the Gathering.

Transportation and Housing:

We will travel to Minneapolis by charter bus, which will also be our bus within Minneapolis during the week. We’ll be going with other congregations in our area. We’ll also do a lot of walking. Our group will be housed in a hotel in the Twin Cities with the other churches in our synod. (We’ll find out where in January) Youth will be assigned rooms and will likely have 3-4 kids in each room.

Food:

For breakfast, we’ll likely buy food so we can eat in our hotel rooms each morning. Some of our meals will be provided by the Gathering. For other meals, we’ll find restaurants and/or eat from food trucks in the area.

Adult Leaders:

Pastor Jennifer Jelinek and Pastor Brenda Lovick will be leading our group. Depending on our num-bers, we may need an additional leader.

Expectations:

All youth will attend monthly meetings to help prepare for the gathering. Youth who want help paying for the trip will participate in fundraising. All youth will sign a behavioral covenant for the Gathering, which includes respecting leaders, youth, staff, and the facilities at the Gathering, caring for one another, refraining from sexual activity and use of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs. Violation of this covenant will result in the youth being sent home at their own expense.

Cost:

About $1200 per person, which includes the Gathering, hotel, transportation, food, and Gathering T-shirt. We’re asking each student to pay $100 to secure their spot. Families may pay the whole amount, but we’ll do major fundraising to try and earn the rest.

Fundraising Ideas:

Touch-a-Truck Concessions – Sept. 11 10:00 a.m.- Noon Envelope wall Bake Sales Bingo Night, raffles, raffle baskets Dinners

Registration:

Registration and non-refundable $100 deposit are due by October 1, 2021 More Information:
