GOD, the strength of all them that put their trustin thee: mercifully accept our prayers; and because

through the weakness of our mortal nature we can dono good thing without thee, grant us the help of thygrace, that in keeping of thy commandments we mayplease thee both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ

thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee,in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, worldwithout end. Amen.

    THE EPISTLE. 1 St John 4. 7.

ELOVED, let us love one another: for love is ofGod, and every one that loveth is born of God,

and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth notGod; for God is love. In this was manifested the love

of God towards us, because that God sent his only-begotten Son into the world, that we might livethrough him. Herein is love, not that we loved God,but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be thepropitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us,we ought also to love one another. No man hath seenGod at any time. If we love one another, Goddwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he inus; because he hath given us of his Spirit. And we

have seen, and do testify, that the Father sent the Sonto be the Saviour of the world. Whosoever shallconfess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth inhim, and he in God. And we have known andbelieved the love that God hath to us. God is love;and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, andGod in him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we

may have boldness in the day of judgement; becauseas he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear inlove; but perfect love casteth out fear; because fearhath torment: he that feareth is not made perfect inlove. We love him, because he first loved us. If a mansay, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: forhe that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? Andthis commandment have we from him, that he wholoveth God love his brother also.

THE GOSPEL. St Luke 16. 19.

ESUS spake a parable unto them, saying, There wasa certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and

fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day. Andthere was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which waslaid at his gate full of sores, and desiring to be fed withthe crumbs which fell from the rich man's table:

moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And itcame to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried bythe angels into Abraham's bosom. The rich man alsodied, and was buried: and in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, andLazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, FatherAbraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, thathe may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool mytongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abrahamsaid, Son, remember that thou in thy life-timereceivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evilthings; but now he is comforted, and thou arttormented. And besides all this, between us and youthere is a great gulf fixed: so that they who would pass

from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us,that would come from thence. Then he said, I praythee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him tomy father's house: for I have five brethren; that he maytestify unto them, lest they also come into this place oftorment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Mosesand the prophets; let them hear them. And he said,Nay, father Abraham; but if one went unto them fromthe dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, Ifthey hear not Moses and the prophets, neither willthey be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

And he entered into one of theships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that hewould thrust out a little from the land: and he satdown, and taught the people out of the ship. Nowwhen he had left speaking, he said unto Simon,Launch out in the deep, and let down your nets for adraught. And Simon answering said unto him,Master, we have toiled all the night, and have takennothing; nevertheless, at thy word I will let down thenet. And when they had this done, they inclosed agreat multitude of fishes, and their net brake. Andthey beckoned unto their partners which were in theother ship, that they should come and help them. Andthey came, and filled both the ships, so that theybegan to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell downat Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am asinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and allthat were with him, at the draught of the fishes which

Y brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, tolive after manner of the flesh; for if you live after

the manner of the flesh, you will die; but if throughthe Spirit you mortify the deeds of the body, you will

live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, theyare the sons of God. For you have not received a spiritof servitude again unto fear; you have received a spiritof sonship, in which we cry aloud, Abba, Father; theSpirit himself bearing witness with our spirit, that weare children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs ofGod, and fellow-heirs with Christ: if so be that wesuffer with him, that we may also be glorified withhim.

ONCERNING spiritual gifts, brethren, I wouldnot have you ignorant. You know that when you

Now there are diversities of gifts, but the sameSpirit. And there are diversities of ministrations, butthe same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God, who worketh all in all. But themanifestation of the Spirit is given to every man for thecommon good. For to one is given by the Spirit the

word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge bythe same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; toanother the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; toanother the working of miracles; to another prophecy;to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kindsof tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues. But all these worketh that one and the self-same Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

THE GOSPEL. St Mark 7. 31.

ESUS, departing from the region of Tyre, camethrough Sidon unto the sea of Galilee, through the

midst of the region of Decapolis. And they bring unto

him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in hisspeech; and they beseech him to put his hand uponhim. And he took him aside from the multitude, andput his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touchedhis tongue; and looking up to heaven, he sighed, andsaith unto him, Ephphatha [Eph-pha-tha], that is, Beopened. And straightway his ears were opened, andthe string of his tongue was loosed, and he spakeplain. And he charged them that they should tell noman: but the more he charged them, so much the morea great deal they published it; and were beyondmeasure astonished, saying, He hath done all thingswell; he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumbto speak.

IG 72. Ps. 90. Ant. LORD, THOU hast been our refuge, /from one generation to another.

2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or everthe earth and the world were made, / thou art Godfrom everlasting, and world without end.

3 Thou turnest man back to the dust, / and thousayest, 'Return, ye children of men.'

4 For a thousand years in thy sight are but asyesterday when it is past, / and as a watch in the night.

5 Thou carriest them away as with a flood, andthey are even as a sleep; / in the morning they are likegrass that groweth up.

6 In the morning it is green and groweth up, / butin the evening it is cut down and withered.

7 For we consume away in thy displeasure, / andare afraid at thy wrathful indignation.

8 Thou hast set our misdeeds before thee, / and oursecret sins in the light of thy countenance.

9 For when thou art angry all our days are gone: /we bring our years to an end, as it were a tale that istold.

    10 The days of our age are threescore years and ten, /or, if men be so strong, they may come to fourscoreyears;

11 Yet is their pride but labour and sorrow: / so soonpasseth it away, and we are gone.

12 But who regardeth the power of thy wrath, / orfeareth aright thine indignation?

13 So teach us to number our days, / that we mayapply our hearts unto wisdom.

    Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, / and tothe Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall

be, / world without end. Amen.Ant. LORD, THOU hast been our refuge, / from onegeneration to another.

    THE COLLECT.

LMIGHTY and merciful God, of whose only gift itcometh that thy faithful people do unto thee true

and laudable service: grant, we beseech thee; that we

may so faithfully serve thee in this life, that we fail notfinally to attain thy heavenly promises; through themerits of Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who livethand reigneth with thee, in the unity of the HolyGhost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

    THE EPISTLE. Galatians 5. 16.

RETHREN: I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and yeshall not fulfil the desire of the flesh. For the

desire of the flesh is against the Spirit, and the Spirit isagainst the flesh; and these are contrary the one to theother; so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law.Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which areth es e: ad ul te ry , forn icati on, uncleanness,lasciviousness1, idolatry, witchcraft2, hatred, variance3,emulations4, wrath, strife5, seditions6, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and suchlike: of the which I tell you beforehand, as I have also

told you in time past, that they who do such thingsshall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit ofthe Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against suchthere is no law. And they that are Christ's havecrucified the flesh, with the affections and lusts.
