Debate Team Heads to UgandaWe spoke to some members of the debate team regarding their recent competition in Uganda. We spoke to Senior 4 student Ornella URUTESI from the Eleanor Roosevelt Family to discuss her esperience. She told us that it was a good competition and they were happy with what they learned from their experience. When we asked what place the team came in, Ornella said, “We cannot really tell you because they did not tell us the place, but we made a great improvement. We improved ourselves.” We asked her how many teams were involved in the debate. She told us that there were three teams and that ASYV was the only team from Rwanda. The other teams were from other countries in East Africa.

Finally we asked Ornella what she learned from her experience in Uganda. She told us that she learned to have confidence in herself and her team. She watched the other teams debating and saw how convincing they were in their arguments. “The advice I would give to other kids who may want to join the debate team is that to know how to debate is a great thing in life. It opens your mind, makes you think progressively and gives you confidence in public speaking. Furthermore it keeps you updated on current events around the world. So I say to everyone to conquer his or her fear and try debate. Once they try it, they will never look back. That is my promise to them.” The following tournament the debate team went all the way to the finals, which they were able to do because of the experience they gained in Uganda. To succeed I try to avoid stress and use my time as well as possible.

When I found out that I was first in my class I was very surprised. If I

could give some advice to my classmates I would tell them to

continue to work hard and avoid laziness.

My strategy in my schoolwork is to work hard and always be

prepared. I work very hard and set aside many hours a day just to study. My advice to my other students is to set goals and don’t

stop until you reach them.

I gain all my success through hard work and using my time well to

make sure I get things done at the right time. What motivates me to work hard is that I work for who I want to be in the future. This helps

me to stay focused on all things that I do in ASYV.

The mantra I live by is, “No Sweat, No Sweets.” I have found

that if you work hard, good things in life will come your way. It’s up to you to shape your own future and it’s starting right now!

Meet ASYV’s Acrobat Team:"ASYV’s Acrobat Team is new to the Village from last year. It was started in 2013 by Ishema Grade’s

NSABIMANA Jean Bosco. The team has five members and they can be found flipping through the Village wherever they go.

Nsabimana Jean Bosco, Martin Luther King Family: !Q: How did you realize that acrobatics was something you enjoyed doing? A: “Acrobatics is a sport that I liked to do since my childhood. It helps me to develop my body and to stay in shape.” !Q: Do you think that you will pursue a career as an acrobat? A: “I think that being an acrobat will help me to reach my goals in my future and help me to go far in my life. Also it helps me in terms of money. In 2007 I received money 50,000 RWF to teach kids in a school by my hometown how to do my tricks.” !Q: What would you say to people who you encourage to join your team? A: “Let me answer that question in two parts. First of all, everyone is welcome in our team, no matter his or her level. We will build a better team of acrobats in ASYV over time. The second part is that I have many things to teach anyone that joins our team. It is in their best interest to give the acrobat team a chance”

We then spoke to the youngest member of acrobat team, Niyonsenga Emmanuel, from the Nelson Mandela Family in Enrichment Year. !Q: How do you feel when you are on the stage and performing with the acrobat team? A: “When I am on the stage I feel comfortable because I am with my team. I feel free in what I am doing.” !Q:You are the youngest acrobat on the team- how does that make you feel? A: “I take it as a miracle! I will work hard so that I make my team proud.” !Q: What advice can you give to the other talented acrobats of ASYV? A: “What I can tell them is to have self-confidence. They must remember that nothing is impossible. They should remember that if you see far you will go far.” ! Article by: CYUSA Honore, MUHIMPUNDU Providence, and Ngabo Jules
