From the President - Mick Supple

Once again it’s a pleasure to write this

newsletter with our club in such a

strong position on and off the green.

The club is in a really solid position to

play finals in 3 Weekend Pennant

sides and 2 Midweek Pennant sides. In

fact we could be in a position of

hosting 3 weekend home finals and 2

midweek home finals. What an

absolutely magnificent result

achieved by the hard work and

determination of all at the club. Why

would you play bowls anywhere else?

Congratulations to Yvonne Hobson

and Steve Ryan our new club

champions. Both singles finals were

top quality games and exciting to

watch, well done to you both and

also to all who participated in the

lead up games. It’s great to see so

many having a go.

As I observe other clubs I realise how

lucky we are to have such a cohesive

group of people who socialise and

play together for the better of the

club. This all comes about from the

hard work and attitude of all at the

club.

We have had several meetings with

Kingston Council over the past couple

of months in regard to the carpark

and the lights at the club and all

being well we should see action in the

next financial year. The Council have

included in their draft budget

provision for asphalting the carpark

next financial year with a contribution

from the club, and we are also quite

advanced in our discussions to extend

the height of the light poles and

change over to LED lighting of the

green. The Council have been very

approachable and are very

enthusiastic about improving our club.

A huge thank you to Geoff Gledhill,

our local member, who has been a

magnificent ally and liaison between

the club and the council and without

his assistance, we wouldn’t be this far

down the track.

Thanks to Tony Wright we are installing

6 new aluminium seats to match the

existing seats we installed last year,

which will enhance the look of the

club and surrounds. John Perry has

done a great job replacing the old

pots along the fence with lemon and

lime plants the fruit from which will be

used in the bar.

Thank you to all the volunteers at our

great club, it is you who make it what

it is. The Greens Committee, Social

Committee, Bar Committee, Barefoot

Bowls Committee and all the helpers

that join in when they see something

needs doing.

Please whenever possible use the

services of our sponsors. The Bendigo

need to renew your policy please call

in for a quote, in fact the club

recently changed our policy over to

Let’s dare to dream:

2020/21 Weekend Pennant

Division 1

Division 3

Division 6

Division 7

2020/21 Midweek Pennant

Division 1

Division 3

Division 5

Let’s all work hard together over the

next few weeks to achieve these

goals.

Mick Supple

From the Secretary - Greg Woods

As we near the completion of the

pennant season we find ourselves in

the fabulous position where we hold

strong ladder positions for three

Saturday pennant sides and two of

our Tuesday pennant sides. It is likely

that all will participate in finals with

strong prospects of hosting a home

finals. This is an outstanding result.

Congratulations goes to the coaching

staff, selectors and to all players who

have attended training and made

positive efforts to improve their

bowling skills. Best wishes and good

luck to those bowlers fortunate

enough to participate in finals. I know

that you’ll do the club proud.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of

our fabulous club. The Club was

founded in 1960 with the first game of

bowls being played on Tuesday 2nd

November 1961, Melbourne Cup Day. The Board has agreed to honour this

momentous occasion with a function

to be held in October 2020. At the

moment we are looking to form a

Committee that will oversee the

preparatory work required to make

this happen. We will also be seeking

photos and any interesting

memorabilia and stories about the

club that you may be able to share.

It has taken longer than expected,

but the photographed ‘retired’

honour boards are now on display in

the alcove between the toilets. I’m

sure you’ll agree that the results are

quite stunning and are a significant

showpiece compared to other clubs

who have gone down this direction.

We are now in the process of

commissioning the new style honour

board which will be positioned

adjacent to the bar.

Unfortunately, there has been a trend

over the past couple of years of

declining participation in our mid-

week social bowls (summer and

winter). Participation in Saturday

winter bowls is also trending down.

There are a number of contributing

factors with the main reason being a

decline in support from visitors from

local bowls clubs. With improvements

Page 3: SUNNYSUNNY Parkdale

3

in grass greens and more clubs

moving to synthetic surfaces, many of

the local clubs are now holding their

own social bowls events. It appears

that the days when there was a

waiting list to play social bowls at

Parkdale are long gone. As this trend

is of concern to the Board, Michael

Hermitage has agreed to conduct a

review aimed at providing options for

consideration on how we might be

able to increase our social bowls

participation rates. If you have any

ideas, I’m sure Michael will be happy

to receive them.

Bowls Victoria (BV) has announced

some changes to the pennant fixture

for 2020/21. Despite rumours to the

contrary, there will be no reduction in

the number of teams participating in

each division. This means that the

number of pennant matches will

remain unchanged at 18 for next

season. BV have decided to

commence next season on 17

October 2020 – taking into account

the Bowls Australia Nationals, which

occur all together for the first time,

from 3-16 October 2020. With the later

start and a desire not to extend the

completion of the bowls season, there

will be two double headers (Saturday

and Sunday) next season.

On Sunday 5 April we will be holding

our President’s and Presentation Day.

This is an important day for the Club

as it gives our members an

opportunity to mix with our past

Presidents and congratulate our Club

Champions. I encourage all members

to attend this event.

Our AGM this year will be held on

Sunday 17 May. This year, three Board

positions become vacant. Shortly we

will be seeking nominations for these

Board positions and for the various

committee roles. Unfortunately, Jane

Ford will not be seeking re-election to

the Board. On behalf of the Board, I’d

like to thank Jane for her tremendous

contributions and insights over the

past couple of years.

Greg Woods

From the Head Coach - Haydn Smith

With only a few games to go in the

home and away season of pennant

bowls, it makes one think how quickly

the season has passed so far.

The job has yet to be completed, but

as we take stock at this particular

juncture we find the club in a very

healthy and envious position.

With three Saturday Pennant sides

entrenched in the finals and two of

the Tuesday Pennant sides all but

guaranteed a finals berth, I hope no

one has booked holidays in early

March. But how does this

phenomenon occur?

There are so many reasons Parkdale

Bowls and Social Club finds itself in

this particular position. But I reiterate

the word 'harmony'. I cannot

emphasise this enough. The Board are

a pro-active group and support their

sub-committees. Sub-committees

such as the greens committee, social

committee, selection committees and

Barefoot Bowls. And there has to be

cohesion amongst those committee

members for those committees to

function.

Any decisions those committees make

have to be backed by the

membership. The social committee

can organise a tremendous function

but if the membership doesn't attend

the function falls flat. You the

members have the final say by

backing the decision makers and

Page 4: SUNNYSUNNY Parkdale

4

supporting their decisions. As Club

Coach and Chairman of Selectors, I

can only make a blue-print of the

direction I would like the club to take.

If the membership doesn't believe

in that blue-print, then we don't have

harmony. With harmony we have

success.

So, at this stage I wish to thank all

members for putting the club in this

wonderful position.

Now the job gets harder. And I ask the

membership to still believe. I ask

the membership to trust. And I ask the

membership to think Club.

We approach the finals trying to

qualify certain players but without

destabilizing the performance of

sides. We endeavour to tweak sides

for maximum performance. Because

of these factors difficult decisions are

made by selectors on individual

players. Seventeen doesn't go into

sixteen.

Because of this, I ask all members to

think Club first. Put yourself in the

position of a selector.

Together Everyone Achieves More =

TEAM.

I would also like to remind members

that I am available for coaching and

can be contacted personally, or on

0428090914, to arrange a suitable

time.

4.Which actress has won the most

Oscars?

5.Which chess piece can only move

Barefoot Bowls report - Bill Bushby

Since the last newsletter the 2019

Spring Season has been completed.

Our winners once again were the

Parktone Pups, this time Sheep

Stations were runners up. The relative

frequency with which the Parktone

Pups win our competition may be

causing some anxiety for the

engravers of our shield. They may be

running out of "P"s.

The 2020 Summer Season has

commenced with 19 teams registered

but sadly the Curry Munchers have

had to withdraw because of illness.

We wish Liza and Allen a speedy

recovery. As we go to print it is

refreshing to see different teams at

the top of the ladder. Mean Machine,

Vickery, Lucy's Lot and Dingy Sailors fill

the first four positions after eight

rounds. The season's finals will be held

on 2nd April.

It was good to see Ray Ellis and John

and Maureen Watson pop in for a

visit. All three were instrumental in

establishing our competition.

Once again I'd like to thank our band

of happy helpers: Agnes, Lorraine and

Therese in the kitchen. Ian and Bruce

Willet at the BBQ, Graeme and a

rotation of barmen and barwomen

serving drinks, Henri for keeping our

ladder, Francis and Haydn for

coaching new players and Brenda for

registering the players.

Chef Extraordinaire Ian Thomas at the

ready :)

Social Committee report - Yvonne

Hobson

A sausage sizzle was held in October,

2019 to herald the start of the Club

Championships. Thank you to Ian

Thomas and Bruce Willett who always

offer to ‘man’ the BBQ; (this is possibly

politically incorrect but everyone

knows what it means .)

Congratulations to the winners in the

various championship categories and

good luck to anyone who still has to

play.

Thank you to everyone who

participated in the Cup Sweep in

November 2019. Congratulations to

the winners.

Our annual Trivia Night was held in

November, 2019 and was a great

success. This took on a new format in

2019. Kerri Mowatt’s brother-in-law

was at the helm and did a great job.

It was lovely to see Bill and Brenda

Bushby in the audience participating

in the event. They were normally the

organisers and did a fabulous job for

many years.

Page 6: SUNNYSUNNY Parkdale

We finished off 2109 with our

Christmas Function which was very

well attended by members. It was a

different format and the feedback we

received let us know it had been

successful.

CONGRATULATIONS to all raffle prize

winners:

*Colin Watson, Kel Chappell and Lucy

Piggott won the fabulous Christmas

Hampers

*Bruce Willet, Damien Millerd, Kerri

Smith, Hazel Trant-Hung, Brenda

Bushby, Blake McKenzie and Darren

Sherriff won a variety of other prizes.

Many thanks to Linda Bowkett for

putting the hampers together and

Colin Watson for donating the

fabulous ‘Frozen’ and ‘Super Hero’

backpacks.

We hope everyone enjoyed a lovely

break over Christmas and took the

time to enjoy family, friends and other

pursuits.

On January 17th, 2020 a Card Night

was held at the Club. This was a new

event; thank you to Therese and Mick

Supple for introducing it. A lot of fun

was had by the members who were

there. Look out for details of another

one later in the year.

On January 18th, 2020 ‘Hello World’

sponsored a tournament at the Club.

It was well attended by members.

Congratulations to Colin Watson, Kyle

Roche and Noel Callahan who won

the tournament. Thanks to Michael

Hermitage and Henri Van Munster

who organised it. The Social

Committee provided afternoon tea

for this event.

We all looked forward to the Pennant

Games resuming in 2020. The Social

Committee provided nibbles for the

first games. Good luck to everyone for

the rest of the season and enjoy the

games .

On Sunday February 23rd, a special

afternoon tea was held at the Club in

honour of Ray Ellis, a Life Member of

the Club. It was lovely to see so many

of our members there. It was a lovely,

relaxed afternoon and Ray and his

beautiful family thoroughly enjoyed

themselves.

I would like to thank Mick Supple and

his ‘band of merry men’ who helped

set up the Club Rooms and restore

them to their natural state. I would like

to thank Sheena Gilbert, Daryl &

Lorraine Gray, Francis Hung, Mary

Lake, Frances Sheehan, Therese

Supple, Bruce Gilbert and everyone

else who offered to help Hazel and I in

the kitchen or in serving the food.

Thanks too, to Carol , Brenda Bushby,

Jim Walker and Mick Supple who

manned the bar. We were privileged

to hear some heartfelt speeches

about Ray’s contribution to the Club

from Mick Supple, Bruce Gilbert, Jim

Walker, Brenda Bushby and Ray

Toman. Ray Ellis also gave a moving

speech thanking his family and the

Club for all it had done for him. Thank

you to Greg Woods for his input into

Ray’s certificate and displaying

special photos on the television

screen. Ian Thomas brought along a

trophy he and Ray had won in a

men’s pairs championship some years

ago.

The feedback from everyone who

attended the event, was wonderful.

Everyone had a fabulous time and

were happy to share their enjoyment.

Thanks everyone!!

I would like to thank Hazel Trant-Hung

(my partner in crime!!), who has

helped me fulfill the Social Committee

commitments since half way through

last year, when Jane Ford had to step

down due to family commitments.

Hazel has been a great support to

me. Unfortunately, Jane Ford had to

temporarily withdraw from the

Committee due to Tony’s health

issues. Jane has also been committed

to helping her niece in Malta, who is

currently battling cancer. Hazel and I

have enjoyed ‘bouncing off’ each

other and catering for our members.

We are both very grateful to everyone

who steps up to help us.

Welfare Report - Yvonne Hobson

Unfortunately, we have had a few

members who have experienced

ailments or the loss of a family

member since our last newsletter.

Kerri Smith (Haydn’s wife) had a minor

procedure in October last year and

has recovered well. Meg Watson was

plagued with a sore foot and Lorraine

Gray had cellulitis in her leg.

In November, Jim Walker’s sister-in-law

(Margaret Booth), sadly passed away.

Jim Milne, a past member also passed

away in the same month.

Julie Westcott had a back operation

in November and has recovered very

well.

Hazel Trant-Hung took a break from

bowling due to recurring problems

with her foot, leg and hip. Thankfully,

Hazel is now back bowling; it is nice to

see her back on the green .

Hazel Williams, a past member passed

away early in December.

Chris Worledge’s brother passed

away in January. It has been a

particularly difficult time for Chris who

has lost her husband, mother, father

and brother all within a very short

time.

Meg Watson had an operation on her

foot in January 2020. Meg is still in the

rehabilitation stage. We hope to see

her back at the Club soon.

Nancy Wallace, a past Club member

passed away in January 2020.

Jim Walker, Linda Bowkett and Sandra

Philips have all struggled with plantar

fasciitis. Jim and Linda have been

able to manage their condition.

Sandra is still suffering from the painful

condition. Sandra also has issues with

her knee and is due to have a knee

reconstruction operation in late

February.

Malcolm Pepper was very unwell

recently with a virus but has now

recovered and is back bowling. Great

to see Malcolm back on the green.

Greg Woods had an operation on his

back in February. The operation went

well and Greg is now recovering at

home. We look forward to seeing

Greg back at the Club soon.

I would like to take this opportunity to

thank all members who attend the

funerals of our members and/ or their

relatives. It means a lot to the families

and shows great respect for our

members. Cards have been sent to

the families who have lost a loved

one.

I would also like to thank Hazel Trant-

Hung who has temporarily replaced

Jane Ford on the Welfare Committee.

It is timely to remind everyone to

continue to be SunSmart for the

remainder of the Pennant Season and

Mixed Social Bowls.

Remember to:

* stay hydrated by drinking lots of

water

* wear a hat

* reapply sunscreen regularly

Happy bowling everyone!!!
