Port Alfred High School news in brief

The Bakery now open in Kenton on Sea

By DaNIeLLe DUgarD

ORGANISERS of a charitable donation of books meant for local primary schools couldn’t believe their eyes when they opened some of the boxes sent from over-seas that were clearly marked “Elementary Grade 3 Maths”.

Inside they discovered about 120 books but they cer-tainly weren’t maths books – and nor were they suit-able for young schoolchildren.

The books, which arrived with about 1,000 genu-ine text books as part of a Port Alfred Masonic Lodge charity project – destined for nine local schools – left organiser Tim Ord shaking his head in disbelief. They were novels aimed at an adult audience, some of them of a romance variety that was described as a little more racy than Mills and Boon.

Tim was speechless, especially after one of the wom-en at the hand-over event at the Masonic Hall in the CBD last week picked up one of the books and in hushed terms said: “I’ve read this one ... and do you know there is one love scene in it that lasts 12 pages!”

Tim is baffled how the mix-up occurred in the project that has resulted in the local schools benefiting from books that were acquired from overseas charities – but he was delighted when the Sunshine Escape newspaper came up with a solution.

“Why not give them to another charity,” suggested our reporter. “They are obviously not suitable to young children but they are the type of novel that’s bought ev-ery day by adult readers.”

Tim liked that idea, so this week the SPCA collected the books and plans to sell them to help raise funds for an operating theatre they hope to install in their Station Hill premises to increase their ability to spay dogs and cats.

SPCA inspector Forbes Coutts said: “What can I say? It might have been a mistake, and I am sorry the schools did not get as many text books as they might have hoped, but it is a mistake that will bring an additional

AS of a week ago strolling through the main road in Kenton on Sea, from early morning onwards to just af-ter midday, has offered a new distraction as the entic-ing smells emanating from The Bakery – Kenton on Sea beckons one in.

The idea for the bakery was conceived while Kieren Bremner and Mark Crandon were hiking across Nepal, somewhere along the 72 day journey Mark piped up after many a bowl of rice and sometimes dahl (lentils) that in future he would only live in a town where one could find good cheese and fresh croissants daily. So when the couple decided to relocate to Kenton there was only one thing for it, Kieren - who comes from a long line of family bakers – would have to attend a

course in order to add to her already impressive re-sume the skills of artisan baker, while Mark would put his business skills toward sourcing the finest local ingredients and accompanying cheeses with which to stock their shop.

“Everything in the shop is for sale, the bread and cheese but also the crafts, décor items and art and everything has been sourced from local South Afri-can producers. We try to keep away from chemicals and opt for environmentally friendly products such as our stoneground flour that comes from the Overberg or our coffee beans sourced from a fourth generation family owned company in the Transkei. Our cheeses come from the Western Cape, with some from Bedford,

Prince Albert and a farm in Howick,” Kieran said. The Bakery is open from 08:00 in the morning to 13:30 Tuesdays

through to Saturdays, 08:00 to 11:00 on a Sunday and closed on Mon-days. And for those who wonder why the strange hours that is be-cause Kieran and Mark rise in the wee hours of the morning to begin baking for the new day.

On offer each day are: ciabatta – plain and olive; croissants – plain and chocolate; multi-grain oats, honey and sunflower loaf which is great fresh and super for toasting too as well as sourdough bread. Rye bread is available on order only and look out for the additional daily specials such as cinnamon rolls and samosas – the later may soon be a daily treat too.

Already a daily talking point and meeting place in Kenton there is so much more in store at The Bakery – Sunshine Escape will offer follow up stories soon about the books Mark has published and the new exercise classes for children Kieren will offer in the New Year. In the interim we encourage you to pop in for your daily loaf ‘n cheese, condiment, coffee or craft but beware you may also leave with a new painting or a sketch as Kieren, an accomplished artist’s work is on display in the shop too. Contact Kieren on 072 262 4325 or Mark on 074 102 3188 to place your individualised order.

benefit to Port Alfred. I can only add my thanks to the Masons for dreaming up such an amazing project and then allowing us to benefit from the mix-up.”

*Port Alfred Primary School in Station Hill; Mtyhobo and Dambuza in Nemato; Bathurst; Qhayayi; Port Al-fred High School; Shaw Park; Kuyasa Combined; and Alexandria Primary School were the recipients of the text books, which were handed out by the Port Alfred Freemasons on November 15.

Ekuphumleni entrepreneur - Gloria BoboWHEN Denise Thomas, 90, relocated to Kenton on Sea almost ten years ago she asked her estate agent to help her find a friendly and caring domestic helper. “I think I had someone in mind not unlike Mammy in Gone with the Wind,” Denise laughs. Glorio Bobo arrived on her doorstep and proceeded to sing as she worked and both wom-

en say they simply never looked back, forging a firm re-lationship that sees Gloria refer to Denise as her English mother and Denise talking about her African daughter.

Denise was concerned about Gloria’s living arrange-ments and asked to see where she lived. “When I saw the conditions she lived in, I found it unacceptable and immediately decided to find Gloria a house of her own that she could make work for her as a future source of in-come,” Denise added. Easier said than done, as they soon discovered that most of the properties in the townships are not for sale but ultimately the right premises were found and Gloria began working towards creating a room suitable for Bed and Breakfast accommodation listed with the Kenton Tourism office – a reality today.

As Denise spent many years, as single mother to four sons, making ends meet, she encouraged Gloria, mother of three daughters, to look for other business opportuni-ties and soon Gloria’s Bakery saw the light of day as the gap existed in Ekuphumleni for baked goods supplied on order to community members for birthdays and events.

Denise mentored Gloria and she currently offers her bak-ery clients cakes, muffins and scones with orders placed a day in advance.

Gloria’s latest venture stems from her loving, nurturing nature. After she works for Denise until the early after-noon she returns home and soon finds, community chil-dren coming to visit for an hour or two. Once again Gloria recognised a need in the community and she now aims to open a crèche in the New Year. The crèche will cater for little ones who are ready to be potty trained between the ages of one and three. Gloria will employ someone to take care of the young ones in the morning, thus paying it for-ward as it were and empowering and mentoring another, and Gloria will take over for the afternoon shift.

And the ideas just keep coming with Gloria in future looking towards using her garden as a community venue where local crafters and traders can set up a stall on Sat-urday mornings to make the most of the passing trade. For more information (or to order a scrumptious ginger cake) contact Gloria Bobo on 083 5097 465.

with the hospitable Precious taking care of clientele daily. The menu has been streamlined and the prices changed to

make it more affordable and all day breakfasts and freshly baked roosterkoek has been added on as menu specials. “With season upon us we do not want to change the concept of the shop too much, we will look towards a revamp in the new year,” Gerhardt said.

Another new feature, which has already drawn much inter-est and is bound to be popular over season too, is the Soft Serve machine. During season The Garden will also offer a tasty faster turn-over menu item with hot dogs prepared on the grill.

WELL it’s time to crack out the razors and clean that face… that is if you have been participat-ing in Movember - the Sunday morning shave of that ‘stache after a month of growth may well be epic. In fact one of our competitors who would have won hands down became a little impatient and shaved a bit too soon, which paved the way for a new leader in our Movember competition.

We would like to thank our local business-men who were game enough to enter this fun competition to help raise awareness for men’s health issues. As there is a definite silliness at-tached to this Movember concept we thought we’d share a few ‘facts’ with you following in the footsteps of this campaign which annually takes corny jokes to a whole new level.Did you know?

that when we combine two words to cre-• ate a new one like Movember, created from moustache and November, it is called a portmanteau. the goal of Movember is to ‘change the face • of men's health’

Then there are folks like Ralph Haddad – who knows the true origins of his gripe (perhaps an inability to grow any…), Ralph is the Health and Education at Montreal’s McGill University newspaper and he has decided that Movem-ber is a “sexist, racist, transphobic, and misin-formed” campaign.

Read for yourself the opinion of this spokes-

man from Canada’s Ivy League university:“Despite Movember claiming to be a global

movement, it assumes privilege and a certain relation to class on behalf of the participant, which is only found in certain parts of the world. It is also wrong that Movember aims to link masculinity and being a man to secondary male characteristics, including having a pros-tate and being able to grow a moustache. To be completely clear, you don’t have to be a man to have a prostate, and you don’t have to have a prostate to be a man. Being a man, according to Movember, implies an archaic view of gender that implies that only a male/female gender bi-nary exists, and that you aren’t really a man if you don’t necessarily identify with that binary. The idea of suggesting that men show solidar-ity with each other by growing moustaches is completely absurd.”

Sad that there always have to be those who find a problem with anything as opposed to solutions and the fact that many ways exist for anyone not just men with beards and prostates’ to be involved in the Movember campaign like the Sistas who are part of this newspaper who decided to dedicate time and effort to this cam-paign we admit that our effort was not quite as valiant as Sarah from the UK who participated in full – you can read her story here: http://

Jennifer Kukard from The Little Brewery on the River handing over the 5L keg of Kowie Gold to Terri Goosen who accepted the prize on behalf of her husband Marius.

In a last minute attempt to win the com-petition, Mark Pauls of Marko Polo rushed over to Michelle from Village Gossip and got her to dye his mustache in a bright combination of colours. He then promised the organizers that he would share his keg of beer with all the competitors if he won…….I must admit we were ALMOST swayed by his proposal but ethics kicked in and we chose the winner purely on merit! Hahahahha…..

Marius made a concerted effort throughout the month to grow his weird and interesting looking bush in a special style that had the other en-tries green with envy.

Thank you to all the REAL men who participated in this competition to highlight the dangers and create awareness for men’s health issues. Not all of the entrants managed to get through the entire month without shaving! The Eastern Cape Motors competitor would have won hands down if he hadn’t shaved and re-started the growing process, however at least those that didn’t manage an entire month still entered the compe-tition and made an attempt, so once again thank you!

And the winner is ... Marius Goosen from Wharf St Fruit & Veg

With all this for R 199,900, it is no wonder that the order book is filling fast!

USEFUL TiPS:We all know the sense in having the car serviced before heading off on the family holiday, but how many of us think to have it done at least two weeks before the holiday? That will give you the chance to make sure that the service was done properly, and also ensures that you do

not struggle to get a workshop appointment in time.

Going on holiday and towing a trailer with the boat or “big boys’ toys”? Make sure that you get the trailer checked out when you get the car serviced. Check the wheel bearings on the trailer, and ensure that all the lights are working.

Back road travels on a Kawasaki On the 15th of October, Kasouga resident, Bert Brummer set off on a dirt road adventure on his Kawasaki KLR 650 just over a

month and 4800 kilometres later he returned home, mud-splattered and tired but filled with many a traveller’s tale.

The Route:From Kasouga he headed to Graha-mstown on the Southwell road, then on to Adelaide via nature reserve tri-als and then over the mountains to-wards Katberg. A seemingly feasible road dwindled out and gave way to off-road veld navigation to Queen-stown and the first overnight stop - a somewhat surrealistic experience in a caravan park. Via Aliwal North he headed for Bultfontein to visit Mia Bredenkamp – an avid worm farmer and alternative healer who was bus-ily preparing for a visit from the Pa-sella film crew, who had heard about the eccentric woman who set up an after school Afrikaans support group to help the town’s Sotho children pass their Afrikaans exams. From there Bert headed for Gauteng to visit fam-ily before tackling the Waterberge in the Thabazimbi region. He returned to Johannesburg before moving on to Fouriesburg and then Ficksberg. After criss-crossing Lesotho, exiting at Sani Pass he meandered through the Underberg to Matatiele, Maclear, Dwesa Nature Reserve, Qora mouth and finally Qolora Mouth where he expected to take the ferry across the river only to find it had been washed out to sea and that he’d have to travel back via Butterworth.People and Places:

“The highlight was Lesotho because so much of what I saw was new, I had not seen it before and the people were so friendly and the tranquil scenery breath-takingly beautiful but it was also the most challenging because the roads are very poor and I would not

recommend this leg for single travel-lers,” Bert said.

While his packed bike drew much attention and solicited much conver-sation at stops, Bert also had weird and wonderful encounters en route.

“On the road between Smithfield and Reddersburg I encountered a lone man walking on a sizzling hot day, hungry and thirsty with no soles left on his shoes. I stopped and of-fered him food and drink and discov-ered that he was walking from Klerks-dorp to Fort Beaufort. The cherry seller I bought fruit from, built the hut alongside the road from which to sell her wares to help provide for her or-phaned granddaughter who lost both parents to AIDS,” he said.

The lighter side of life shone through too - from the very friendly Lesotho traffic police who explained that non-offensive traffic offenders could always negotiate a better deal when caught, to the three optimis-tic hitchhikers – two Israelis and a mad Englishman - travelling through Africa along a road where Bert had encountered only one other vehicle during an entire day, or the elegantly dressed teacher in the middle of no-

where - who rushed towards him when he stopped to take a photo of a passing donkey cart and asked ‘Are you okay?’ - who was walking in her Sunday best to teach in a school two valleys further from her home which appeared to be two mountain ranges back.

The countless Chinese road builders and enormous suspended and incom-plete bridges throughout Lesotho at times made Bert feel as if he had passed through a portal to the construction site of the Three Gorges Dam. At Semokong he found the world’s highest abseiling site and at the top of the Sani an Irish-man specialising in Applied Renewable Energy Research travelling on an old bike with a set of blues harps for enter-tainment around the fire at night.

There was lots of falling over and sheltering from storms but other mo-ments such as swimming under the Tsitsa Falls, meeting a tame rooikat at a backpackers and the beautiful indig-enous forests and lovely beaches of the Dwesa Nature Reserve made up for that. There are many more tales like these about this journey but we’ll leave those yarns for the traveller himself to spin.
