SUNYIT / CNSE Merger It’s an exciting time as the SUNY College of Nanoscale Science

and Engineering (CNSE) merges with SUNY Institute of Technology

(SUNYIT). With access to world-class facilities and innovative

career preparation, the newly merged SUNY Polytechnic Institute

will offer unique and expanded opportunities for all its students, on

its Utica and Albany campuses. The same commitment to cutting-

edge academic programs that has distinguished both institutions in

the past will make SUNY Polytechnic Institute a unique, high-tech

global leader in public higher education.

The civil engineering program is currently seeking ABET accreditation. Program graduates will be able to receive maximum education/experience credits towards NYS Licensure only upon ABET accreditation of the program.

BS Civil Engineering

The ProgramCivil Engineering, considered one of the oldest engineering disciplines, encompasses specialties such as structural, transportation, environmental, construction and water resources engineering. The field is continually evolving as engineers, recognized as key players in the technological enrichment of the future, pursue innovations that improve people’s lives.

The program offers a balance of theory and design comprising two areas of study: liberal arts, math, science and engineering science; and civil engineering. Students in the program are challenged to adapt to changes in technology and remain at the leading edge of innovation as they pursue:

• Asolidfoundationinmathematics,physicalsciences,liberalarts,andthefundamentals of engineering design.

• Thetechnicalknowledgeandcriticalthinkingskillsrequiredfortheprofessionalpractice of civil engineering and for seeking advanced degrees.

• Thedevelopmentofcommunicationsskills, teamwork, lifelonglearningandunderstanding of professional ethics and social responsibility in a global context.

ConcentrationsStudents may choose between three areas of concentration: structural engineering, transportation engineering, and environmentalengineering.Eachoftheseoffersauniquefocus:• Structural: design of structures (buildings, bridges,

dams, towers) and structural components (aircraft wings, submarine hulls)

• Transportation: design and operation of transportation facilities (roads, railroads, airports, ports)

• Environmental: design of facilities to treat water, wastewater and hazardous materials

LabsStudents have access to computer labs, with civil engineering software packages, and to specialized labs in surveying, geotechnical, environmental, and solid mechanics.

FacultySUNY Poly faculty work closely with students and challenge them to excel. Many faculty members have obtained their professional engineering license and have industrial experience. In addition, the faculty conduct research and encourage student participationinresearchactivities.Allfacultyholdadoctorateincivilengineeringoraspecificareaofcivilengineering.Alowstudent-to-faculty ratio means that faculty get to know and work closely with students in and out of class.

Career OpportunitiesGraduates of the civil engineering program have the opportunity to pursue a number of career paths in a variety of settings. The skills and knowledge developed as an undergraduate prepare students for continuing their education in graduate school or working in either the public or private sector. Civil engineering graduates can launch careers in development, design, production, marketing, research, operations, and regulation in a wide range of industries that include energy, construction, vehicle design, sustainability, and facility design.

The Utica CampusLocated on hundreds of wooded and landscaped acres, the Utica campus is a beautiful living and learning environment. Freshmen live in the new Oriskany Residence Hall, one of three residential complexes, and enjoy an expanding array of facilities that includes a new student center and field house. Life on campus is enriched by a wide variety of events and activities, including the Wildcats’ championship-winning intercollegiate athletics program and a weekly menu of intramurals, concerts, comedians, and more. Students can join one of the dozens of clubs and organizations or start one with a group of friends who share an interest.
