What is the UNI Spectrum Project…

The Spectrum Project is a Saturday program that combines music, movement, drama and art for children with differing abilities. Activities use the performer’s ideas with direction from UNI students. 

The Spectrum Project performers come from the Cedar Valley and as far away as North Liberty. They range in age from 5 to 20 and meet each Saturday beginning in January.

The Spectrum Project Buddies are UNI, Allen College and Hawkeye Community College students who volunteer each weekend to work with our performers. Each performer is paired with a Spectrum Project Buddy for the duration of the project.

The Spectrum Project is a continuation of efforts to provide performing arts experience for children with differing abilities in the Cedar Valley. This effort began with Spectrum Theatre, founded by UNI Theatre Professor Gretta Berghammer in 2012. The Spectrum Project is modeled after the Ball State Prism Project, founded by Ryan and Amy Hourigan in 2009 at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

The Spectrum Project has supported through the UNI School of Music, the Max & Helen Guernsey Charitable Foundation, Mudd Advertising and community supporters.

Noah O'Conner Age: 7 Noah is an incredible individual who never fails to draw the best Jurassic World pictures! It is fascinating how much knowledge about dinosaurs he has to share. Superpower: Fire! Buddy: Abbie Greene

Annie Shores Age: 6 Annie is an adventurous and loyal kiddo. She is known for introducing green group to her favorite song “Baby Shark” and for her amazing dance moves. You can find Annie in art class putting stickers on all of her projects. Superpower: Spinning! Buddy: Hailey Coy

Zane Widner Age: 5 Zane is a super happy and cheerful boy! He loves to sing and play with instruments while laughing the whole time. Superpower: Shooting webs from his hands like Spider-Man! Buddy: Ashley Graham

Jaylan Krall Age: 10 When not at school, Jaylan enjoys going to house Bolton arcade to play his favorite game, mario kart. Allie Kreger Age: 8 Allie loves coming to the spectrum project each week and getting to interact with everyone there. She looks forward to drawing in art and singing in music. Tristan Kuhn Age: 10 Tristan loves “dance party” and being with is buddies. He likes singing the haunted house song in music and painting in art. He reads a lot of stories for us and is a great music DJ. Superpower: Jumping high! Buddy: Bailey Fitch & Allyson Kiehn

Carter Swanson Age: 10 Carter Swanson, a funny and thoughtful superhero hailing from Hudson Elementary, is always excited to have fun and let his voice be heard. Rachelle Heichel Age: 14 Rachelle is a very amazing girl who loves to sing songs, especially if they are by Taylor Swift.
