Doosan introduces two new articulated dump trucks (ADTs) for the 28-and 40-metric-ton weight class, offering superior per-formance, improved fuel efficiency, and increased reliability, serviceability and operator comfort. Doo-san DA30-5 and DA40-5 ADTs have Tier 4 com-

pliant diesel engines and feature improvements to the driveline, engine and cab for all-around operator ease of use.

The new 365-horsepow-er DA30-5 and 490-horse-power DA40-5 are powered by fuel-efficient Scania DC9 and DC13 diesel engines, respectively. The trucks

have been configured with a high-pressure common-rail (HPCR) fuel delivery system as well as cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR). Tier 4 compliant Doosan ADTs combine selective catalyst reduc-tion (SCR) with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) to reduce engine emission

levels. Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is used with SCR technology and is stored in a DEF tank on the truck. The DOC transforms par-ticulate matter (PM) emis-sions into harmless water and carbon dioxide. DEF is injected into the exhaust system to transform the nitrogen oxides (NOx) pro-duced during combustion into water and nitrogen.

New to the DA30-5 and DA40-5 is a mass airflow sensor and exhaust brake, working in tandem to re-duce emissions. The mass airflow sensor allows the electronic control unit to improve the management of airflow provided by the vari-able geometry turbocharger, and to optimize fuel delivery to the combustion chamber based on air intake volume and rpm. The exhaust brake helps to maintain consistent engine temperatures at low-er engine speeds to improve operating efficiency. Consis-tent engine temperatures re-duce harmful emission lev-els in the exhaust when the

engine is running at lower rpms. Under normal opera-tion, with high rpms, the ex-haust brake is inactive.Improved fuel efficiency

Following extensive hot and cold weather ADT test-ing with customers, which took place in 2013, the DA40-5 recorded an aver-age of only 4.49 gallons (17 liters) an hour. The DA30-5 recorded an average of only 3.96 gallons (15 liters) per hour. Note: these results are operator and site specific.Driveline improvements

Doosan strives to pro-vide its ADT customers with the lowest and safest cost-per-ton transport rate. For example, the DA40-5 has a new bolt-on rear differential. The DA40-5 has improved gear ratios that provide reduced axle speed, improved compo-nent life, reduced vibration and lowered fuel consump-tion. It will replace the cur-rent one-piece rear axle. This design is a competi-tive advantage to further increase productivity and

reliability, while reducing fuel consumption.

The new Doosan ADTs continue to feature a front-mounted turning ring, a sloping rear frame, tandem rear bogey and indepen-dent front suspension. The front-mounted turning ring helps keep all six wheels in permanent contact with the ground, even at a maxi-mum turning angle. These ADTs are able to operate on very rough and soft terrain and are ideal for the min-ing and aggregate industry, commercial and residential site developments and in-frastructure projects.

A sloping rear frame low-ers the centre of gravity for more equal weight distribu-tion, and improved stability and safety when fully load-ed. The sloping frame im-proves tractive effort, helps to minimize tire wear and lowers ground-bearing pres-sure. The independent front suspension improves opera-tor comfort in rough terrain and assists in maintaining

As one of the most in-fluential exhibitions in the construction machinery industry, bauma China has always been an important platform for construction equipment manufactur-ers to show new products, strategies and abilities. In this bauma China, Liu-Gong’s largest wheel load-er, CLG8128H will debut to the world.

CLG8128H is mainly used for large projects. It is developed accord-ing to LiuGong’s product planning and market de-mand, which is featured with 4,04m dumping

height, 7.0m3 rock bucket with movable blade and DANA-C9672 torque con-verter. With 12 ton rated load and 360KN breakout force, it only takes 7.4 seconds to raise for full loading, which improves work efficiency.

For years, LiuGong has been staying ahead of the industry in technology re-search and development, among which the wheel loader technology has been practiced and tested for more than half a century. In 1966, LiuGong success-fully developed the Z435, China’s first wheel loader

and in 1971, LiuGong suc-cessfully manufactured the first articulated wheel load-er in China. This laid the foundation for the wheel loader’s development in modern China. In 2001, LiuGong produced the first plateau-type wheel loader in the world, which filled the worldwide gap and won the Second Prize of State Scientific and Tech-nological Progress, the one and only prize that has been awarded in this indus-try so far. In 2007, LiuGong became the largest loader supplier in the world. The launch of CLG8128 wheel loader not only establishes the market position of Liu-Gong’s wheel loader, but also shows LiuGong’s ca-pability in technology in-novation. b

ground contact.The tandem rear bogey

delivers optimal traction with maximum ground contact in uneven terrain. Due to the tandem design, fewer points of power transfer mean less power loss and a more efficient driveline. All of these fea-tures to make sure the ADT maintains maximum ground contact and the best transfer of power to all wheels, allowing for re-duced maintenance costs.Enhanced cooling

DA30-5 and DA40-5 ADTs have an external en-gine intake air grille located on the truck hood’s right-hand side, providing cooler air to the engine intake im-proving engine efficiency. Plus, a new air vent helps prevent over pressurization in the engine compartment.Increased cab comfort

Numerous design ele-ments in Doosan ADTs make them one of the best trucks for off-road hauling applications. It starts with visibility — an important characteristic of Doosan ADTs. To help promote good visibility from the cab, Doosan ADTs have a sloping hood style for an

excellent front view and superior side view with lat-eral sight lines. Rearview mirrors provide operators a view of the centre tires, while a rear camera — pic-tured on the colour LCD — assists operators in see-ing behind the truck. Plus, standard heat and air con-ditioning, precise steering, ergonomic controls, high quality air-suspension seat, and the lowest noise levels in this ADT size class, in-crease comfort when oper-ating a Doosan ADT.

Two levers control the transmission gear selection and dumping of the body box. Also featured are the cushioned dumping cylin-ders which slow the dump-ing and lowering speeds. A 7-inch LCD shows many machine parameters such as engine rpm, travel speed, differential locks and fuel consumption. In addition, an operating input panel provides in-creased productivity with heated mirrors and seat, an interaxle lock, retarder acti-vation and machine lights.

The new DA30-5 and DA40-5 now come stan-dard with a gradient meter. Two meter readings are vis-ible on the LCD screen. Up/

downhill is shown as a per-centage, and sideways tilt is shows as a degree value.Simple service

A tilting cab gives ser-vice technicians excellent access to all of the truck’s major components. The cab can be tilted back in less than five minutes to expedite routine mainte-nance and repairs. New DA30-5 and DA40-5 trucks have only three wear parts on the entire rear frame, and they are greased by the automatic lubrica-tion system. It is managed by the vehicle control unit and greases the vari-ous sections of the truck only when required. If the grease reservoir is empty, the transmission is limited to first or second gear only to prevent damage to the major components such as the turning ring and the tandem bogeys.Asset management

Coming soon, Doosan will announce factory-fit-ted Doosan Telematics for its ADTs. With this valu-able system, customers can check and receive daily reports on the productivity of their ADTs remotely in-cluding fuel efficiency, pay-load and cycle times. b

Machine control on heavy equipment is often synonymous with road building and large site prep – but it’s not all about the long grade. Here are six machine control applica-tions that can immediately help improve productiv-ity and reduce rework in earthmoving applications.

1. Trenching at a specif-ic depth using a 2D system: excavators, backhoes and compact excavators can all be outfitted with 2D and 3D machine control sys-tems to assist in everything from mass excavation to precisely sloped trenches. Sometimes, however, a trench only needs to be a certain depth below the contour of the land. An excavator with a 2D sys-tem in this application can benchmark against the ground it sits on. The op-erator can set the machine to cut at a depth of six feet, as an example, and the system will indicate to the

operator when the bucket has reached a depth of six feet. Then, the machine can back up, benchmark again against the new sur-face, and continue indicat-ing to the operator when they’ve reached six feet in the new spot. The opera-tor can repeat this for the entire length of the trench.

Advantage: easy to use and set up, consistent trench depth, eliminates time and energy associated with over-digging.

2. Spot-bulldozing to better prepare a site for grading: picture an un-touched jobsite marked with random hills, piles and other terrain abnor-malities. The dozer is equipped with a 3D sys-tem, but those inconsisten-cies present a challenge for the machine: by sticking to the plan, there is a risk that the dozer can be over-loaded as it pushes into the piles of excessive material. The operator will also not

want to risk removing too much of the material by eyeballing it manually (at the risk of undercutting and having to fill it back in). With machine control, the operator can bench-mark the blade path at a higher level than originally intended. This allows the operator to pass over these problem areas and create a clean starting point to more accurately grade the site to its intended plan.

Advantage: easier on the dozer and operator, able to grade the entire site at an expedient pace.

3. Eliminating undercut-ting: not so much an appli-cation as a benefit related to number 2, and machine control in general. Under-cutting occurs when too much material is removed from the site. The rework associated with undercut-ting doesn’t just create double the work (bringing more material in to bring the site back up to the

original plan), it actually requires triple the work in some applications where compaction is then re-quired to bring the material to spec. The goal is to only move material once. The greatest benefit of machine control: getting the job done right the first time.

Advantage: eliminating rework, saving time and cost (fuel, labor, etc.).

4. Mass excavation: con-tractors don’t often con-nect precision with mass excavation applications – they’re often focused on just moving as much dirt as quickly as possible, and then worrying about the finished grade at a later date. But a machine control system equipped on an ex-cavator can allow that op-erator to dig with full speed and confidence, and never over-excavate. By getting the terrain as close to the final grade as possible, it’s going to eliminate having to haul in more material in the future.

Advantage: increased productivity and reduced finishing work.

5. Better contouring jobsite edges to the sur-

rounding land: 3D systems outfitted on both dozers or graders can help contrac-tors seamlessly connect the project to the contour of the ground surrounding it. Without machine con-trol, a contractor may just simply cut and fill to the plan so that it leaves an ir-regular edge to the project but doesn’t integrate to the surrounding property. This can impact landscape, drainage, sight lines, etc. The machine control sys-tem can be set to extend the project to the existing surface to seamlessly tran-sition to the rolling hills or slope already present.

Advantage: Better ap-pearance and flow with surrounding properties.

6. Skid steers and com-pact track loaders for final grade work around obsta-cles: machine control isn’t just for the big boys. If you think about final grading, especially as you get close to buildings and other ob-stacles, larger bulldozers and graders can’t often do that work. Compact track loaders particularly – which provide significantly lower ground pressure than other

machines – can get next to buildings and operate over underground utilities, etc. without causing too much disturbance. The agility of these more compact ma-chines compared to their larger counterparts also of-fers significant productivity and accuracy benefits in tight spaces.

Another unique appli-cation for a compact track loader or skid steer would be a small project such as sportsfield construction and maintenance.

Advantage: Greater agil-ity, responsiveness and accuracy in relatively con-fined spaces.

Your mission: think outside the box. Machine control technologies are becoming easier to operate and integrate across fleets every day. And with that comes increased ROI and a greater ability to positively affect the work you do. Don’t think of it as a tech-nology that’s only suitable for large bulldozers and motor graders – think of it as a transformative tech-nology that will help you get onto the next job faster and more profitable. b

Six Practical Uses Of Machine Control

The Canadian for-est industry is poised to benefit from a trade mis-sion to China that added momentum to a strategic push to promote Canadi-an technology and forest products companies.

FPInnovations and three other Quebec-based organizations have signed a memoran-dum of understanding to participate in a feasi-bility study for the con-struction of a six-storey wood-frame building and a 12- to 15-storey re-search and testing tower out of wood or hybrid systems, to be built in Shanghai, China.

The MOU was signed on October 26 in Shang-hai with China’s Shang-hai Research Institute of Building Sciences Group (SRIBS) and Quebec-based companies FPIn-novations, GIGABASE, Quebec Wood Export Bu-reau (QWEB), and Coar-chitecture.

FPInnovations will provide scientific and

technical support on the design of medium to tall wood structures and ap-plication of the Quebec building code in China. FPInnovations has been leading the way in pro-viding better understand-ing and knowledge re-lated to the performance of wooden and hybrid structural components and systems under vari-ous loads and environ-mental conditions.

The accord was signed during the weeklong trade mission that start-ed on October 25, led by the premiers of Quebec, Ontario and Prince Ed-ward Island. Quebec Pre-mier Philippe Couillard was present at the sign-ing, along with Quebec’s Minister of Economy, Innovation and Exports, Jacques Daoust.

The planned building is envisioned to be de-signed and constructed to be carbon neutral, aiming towards carbon negativity. The feasibil-ity study aims to analyze

the strategies to achieve this goal. The build-ing will be constructed on the SRIBS campus in Xinzhuang, a town lo-cated in Shanghai’s Min-hang District.

FPInnovations has been active in China for the past decade, with its Advanced Building Sys-tems group significantly contributing to the devel-opment of the Chinese Timber Structural Design Building Code in 2004. It also has a long history of collaborating with part-ner university networks in Canada and overseas, including China’s Nan-jing Forestry University, Tongji University and the Chinese Academy of Forestry.

FPInnovations’ inter-national collaboration on research, codes and stan-dards and participation on technical committees help the Canadian indus-try maintain markets and develop new ones for Canadian wood products by ensuring that building standards are consistent with Canadian products and building approaches, as well as promoting the use of Canadian-designed wood construction sys-tems in world markets. b

The all-new Gehl Z25 compact excavator goes above and beyond the size class expectations with its groundbreaking perfor-mance features and tech-nology. This new model incorporates innovative features that enhance pro-ductivity, operator comfort, efficiency and cost savings on the jobsite. This com-pact powerhouse brings 8 inches (203 mm) deeper dig depth and 8.3 inches (211 mm) additional reach at ground level compared to the previous model, the Z27.

The new Z25 is equipped with a 20.4 hp (15.2 kW) electronically-controlled Yanmar Tier IV emissions certified diesel engine. No engine regen-eration is required on the Z25, reducing downtime on the jobsite. Low exhaust position on the machine reduces noise, increases safety and improves visibil-ity. Cold-weather starting is easy with an electric glow plug starting aid, reducing the need for block heaters or starting fluid.

The operator’s station on the Z25 compact exca-vator is built for optimal productivity and control-lability. Joystick controls, operated by simple wrist movements, reduce fa-tigue during a long work day. The controls on the

Z25 include a proportional auxiliary hydraulic rocker switch with detent on the joystick. This allows the operator to adjust the hy-draulic flow for precise attachment performance while keeping his/her hands on the joysticks. The operator can easily select standard ISO or an optional backhoe control pattern with a turn of a mechani-cal lever. The two-position, high speed travel switch is conveniently integrated in the blade control lever for easy accessibility.

A digital operator inter-face features an hour me-ter and clock, recordable maintenance history with adjustable time intervals and reminders, fluid lev-els, fluid temperature, and more. Machine hours can be reviewed for the past 90 days without starting the engine. Multiple language selections are also avail-able.

The operator’s compart-ment is designed with com-fort in mind. A 4-way ad-justable seat offers custom height, weight and backrest positions with a retractable belt. Elevated, folding trav-el pedals allow for addi-tional foot room when per-forming stationary work. An optional cab enclosure with heat provides comfort and protection in extreme weather conditions. Aux-

iliary hydraulic flow rate up to 13.6 gpm (51.3 L/min), paired with high sys-tem pressure up to 2,987 psi (206 bar), deliver more hydraulic muscle to power demanding attachments and deliver superior dig-ging and breakout forces. The two-way and one-way auxiliary flow valve allows for direct-to-tank bypass, while return flow selection is standard equipment. Two variable and two gear pumps bring simultaneous operation without loss of power.

Serviceability is made easy on the Z25 compact excavator. Tool-free access panels give quick and easy access to the hydraulic tank, engine compartment, control valve, air cleaner and control pattern valve. A standard track drive sys-tem (compared to an offset track drive on the Z27) pro-vides long life and allows for easy aftermarket track replacement.

The Z25, along with the other Gehl compact exca-vators, feature a Zero-Tail-Swing design to maximize productivity in confined spaces. The cast side pro-tectors add armor at the base of the upper structure. Other important perfor-

mance features include a high-strength boom with sliding cylinder guards that protect the rods from damage. The Power-a-Tach hydraulic quick coupler en-ables attachment changes by the flip of a switch in-side the cab. The opera-tor leaves the seat only to engage and disengage the safety pin.Applications

The Gehl Z25 compact excavator is positioned in the North American mar-ket to meet the needs of contractors, agricultural customers, and the rental industry. Gehl Compact Excavators excel in appli-cations such as grading, trenching, digging, demoli-tion and recycling and light

utility construction. Their compact nature and zero-tail-swing design make them ideal in situations where space is limited.Interview

“With the introduction of the Z25, the newest ad-dition to the Gehl compact excavator lineup, we were focused on our custom-ers’ requests for a smaller machine with improved performance and comfort,” says Nathan Ryan, Product Manager for Gehl compact excavators. “The Z25 will replace the Z27, giving our customers a machine that can easily be transported by trucks in the 3-ton size class. Even though the Z25 is smaller than the Z27, this EPA Tier IV-certified

model boasts an increase in dig depth and reach and ground level. Operators will also notice enhance-ments in ergonomics with a larger cab, nearly pedal-free flat floor, and 4-way adjustable seat. In addi-tion, we’ve taken this op-portunity to incorporate some of customers’ favor-ite features from our larger models, like an integrated digital display with service reminders and usage moni-toring, and proportional auxiliary hydraulics with detent. Owners will be pleased with the features and performance of the new Z25, combined with reliability they have come to expect from Gehl com-pact excavators.” b

Over the course of the day, students worked in teams of three to identify native tree species based on images of key fea-tures and answer a series of questions on forestry.

Testing was based on a series of learning resources developed by Forests On-tario to assist teachers in bringing forestry into the classroom. Resources in-cluded fact-sheets, quizzes, and slideshows designed to guide students in iden-tifying native tree species by features such as bark, leaves, seeds, and buds and develop a basic under-standing of forests and for-est management.

Tree Bee dates back to 1952, when it was first introduced by the Ontario Forestry Association (OFA) with the goal of encourag-ing elementary-aged stu-dents to appreciate the beauty, diversity, and im-portance of Ontario’s for-ests. Following the OFA’s merger with Trees Ontario in 2014, the newly formed Forests Ontario has carried on the Tree Bee tradition.

“Students have had an incredible enthusi-asm for Tree Bee since the very beginning,” said Rob Keen, Forests Ontario CEO. “We’ve had students

participate one year and volunteer to coach at their own schools the follow-ing year. When students can get excited about our forests, especially at such a young age, we’re laying the foundation for a future generation that will value and support the health of our ecosystem.”

Dave Ireland, Managing Director of Biodiversity at the ROM, echoed Keen’s sentiments. “If we don’t teach children to value the world around them early on, they may never start. That’s exactly what I love about Tree Bee,” Ireland remarked. “The ROM was more than happy to pro-vide the winning teams with ROM memberships as a reward for their ef-forts and in hopes that students will join us at the ROM and continue nur-turing their interest in the natural world.”

Forests Ontario would like to extend our grati-tude to the ROM for host-ing the 2014 Tree Bee and for their generosity in pro-viding museum member-ships to the winning Tree Bee team. We also wish to thank Toronto Field Naturalists for their sup-port in making this year’s program possible. Finally, Forests Ontario wishes to thank and congratulate all the students who worked hard in the lead-up to the 2014 Tree Bee and brought such high lev-els of enthusiasm to this year’s competition. b

Atlas Copco has in-troduced its CA1300 and CA1500 single-drum soil rollers for high maneuver-ability and visibility on parking lot, road, utility pipe and street projects. The new CA1500 roller features Atlas Copco’s ex-clusive Active Bouncing Control (ABC), a cross-mounted Tier 4 Interim or Tier 4 Final engine and steel blades that improve compaction, safety and vis-ibility.

The engines on the CA1300 and CA1500 are cross-mounted, or placed perpendicular to the frames, which is an in-dustry first. The rollers’

hydraulic pumps are also in line with the engine. This allows users to reach all the necessary compo-nents on the engines and hydraulic pumps for fast and easy service and main-tenance. And because the engines are cross-mounted rather than parallel to the frame, they provide op-timal weight distribution and contribute to the units’ minimal footprint.

The CA1300 features a Tier 4 Final, 75-horsepower Kubota diesel engine, and the CA1500 uses a Tier IV Interim, 100-horsepower Cummins diesel engine. Both have top-mounted, cool air intakes with side

vents that combine with the ejector exhaust outlet to minimize engine noise and prevent dust from be-ing sucked into the engine compartment, which is a common occurrence on soil compaction sites.

The rollers’ high static linear loads make them ide-al for compacting a range of materials, from clay to rock fill. The CA1300 fea-tures a static linear load of 73 pounds per linear inch (PLI), and the CA1500 has 112 PLI. The compac-tion power is transferred through the rollers’ drums to efficiently compact soil with minimal passes.

The CA1300’s 54-inch drum and the CA1500’s 66-inch drum give opera-tors optimal visibility and allow them to maneuver into tight workspaces, such as pipe trenches or road shoulders. “With high vis-ibility, operators can moni-tor the drums and keep an eye out for nearby work-ers,” said Vijayakumar Palanisamy, Atlas Copco Dynapac Product Market-ing Manager. “This means operators don’t need to sacrifice productivity or safety when working on cramped worksites.”

Atlas Copco’s ABC sys-tem, an optional feature for the CA1500 through CA6500 models, prevents operators from over-com-pacting the soil, which can damage the rollers. Once soil reaches its maxi-mum density, further vi-brations from the roller begin to travel back into the machines. This double jumping can crack drums and cause premature fa-tigue damage to the roll-ers’ frame, hitch and other structural components, which are expensive and time consuming to replace. The optional ABC system helps protect the frame and drum by detecting double jumping as soon as it be-gins to occur and shutting off the roller’ vibration.

“We created our exclu-sive ABC system specifi-cally to help contractors get the most life from their compactors by minimiz-ing a main cause for roller repairs,” Palanisamy said. “Without double jumping,

the equipment stays in the field longer; compaction is more efficient; and the ROIs are greater.”

The service alert sys-tems and easy-access en-gines allow contractors to service and maintain the rollers on the worksite without taking them to a shop. The service interval alert in the instrumentation display indicates when and what type of maintenance is required.

Optional strike-off blades help the rollers’ con-sistency by removing over-sized rocks and obstacles in front of the thick drum shells. The blades have an innovative, divided profile that efficiently pushes out rocks, which can break up compacted soils. All At-las Copco pad foot rollers are fitted with heavy-duty drum scrapers to keep the drums clear of clay and mud to ensure consistent compaction.

For environmentally sensitive worksites, the rollers feature Atlas Cop-co’s ECO Mode, an rpm-management system. The system reduces fuel con-sumption as much as 20 percent by delivering to the rollers only the amount of power that is necessary to operate at any given time. It is standard on the CA1300 and is also includ-ed with the Antispin/ECO Traction Systems for the CA1500 through CA6500 models.

Atlas Copco’s speed lim-iter makes it easy for the operator to reach consis-tent speeds in the CA1500 through CA6500 models. With a speed limiter set-ting, the operator sets the desired speed in the con-trols and pushes the joy-stick completely forward to quickly and accurately achieve the same compac-tion speed every time. b

Atlas Copco Completes New Soil Roller Line

The Mining Associa-tion of Canada (MAC) commends the federal government on the re-cent announcement of the new Extractive Sec-tor Trade Strategy to support Canadian min-ing companies operat-ing abroad.

The announcement complements the re-lease of the renewed Corporate Social Re-sponsibility (CSR) Strat-egy, Doing Business the Canadian Way, an-nounced by Minister Fast on November 14.

“Taken together, these two strategies send a wel-come signal that Canada supports and promotes a strong and vibrant Cana-dian mining sector both at home and abroad. The Government of Canada is also setting a high bar for corporate responsibility performance, which our members embrace,” said Pierre Gratton, MAC’s President and CEO.

The extractive sec-tor strategy focuses on removing trade barriers through the negotiation of trade agreements, in-creasing the knowledge of the trade commis-sioner network to bet-ter connect Canadian companies with oppor-tunities in other coun-tries and more broadly positioning Canada as a partner of choice for Canadian direct invest-ment abroad. The indus-try has supported the government’s efforts to increase trade commis-

sioners’ understanding of high-priority sectors, like mining, by embed-ding dedicated trade commissioners into in-dustry associations. “As mining is both a com-plex and global sector, MAC has seen the ben-efits of this program as it provides a platform for trade commissioners to learn more about our industry and align gov-ernment efforts to fur-ther enhance Canada’s strength in mining over-seas,” said Gratton.

“The Harper govern-ment has negotiated and concluded free trade and foreign investment pro-tection agreements at an unprecedented rate over the past eight years, po-sitioning Canada’s glob-ally-leading mining sec-tor for success. The new strategy will add distinc-tion to Canada’s mining brand and should send a clear signal to other mining countries to take note,” added Gratton.

When taken with the CSR strategy that sets expectations of com-panies to adhere to in-ternational standards regarding social and environmental prac-tices and strengthens Canada’s internation-al dispute resolution mechanisms such as the Extractive Sector CSR Counsellor and the OECD National Contact Point, Canada is well-positioned as a global leader in the extractive sector. b

The John Deere 750K and 850K Crawler Dozers not only meet Final Tier 4 emissions standards, but also incorporate value-enhancing features such as EcoMode and an up-dated Electro-Hydraulic (EH) control system. The K-Series crawlers provide contractors a Final Tier 4 product that affords higher productivity, increased up-time and lower daily oper-ating costs in earth mov-ing, waste, and grading applications.

“The new 750K and 850K crawlers are built on the success of their iT4 pre-decessors,” said Mark Oli-ver, Crawler Dozers Prod-uct Marketing Manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “While making updates to the engine, we also added some new fea-tures customers will appre-ciate. The electro-hydraulic system has been updated and the control logic of that system is brand new from John Deere. When the optional EH system is ordered, customer driven

features such as blade shake for PAT (Power-Angle-Tilt) configurations, improved blade response and rear auxiliary con-figurable settings will help customers become more productive. EH controls are now available for OSD (Outside Dozer) configura-tions which also enable the new optional Power Pitch feature.”

The 750K and 850K in-corporate a PowerTech 6.8-L Final Tier 4 diesel engine with 165 hp and 205 hp re-spectively. The 850K is the first John Deere dozer to feature EcoMode. EcoMode optimizes fuel economy while maintaining ground speed by automatically ad-justing engine speed and transmission settings based on load. This new feature has the potential to save customers upwards of 20 percent in fuel with no loss in productivity in many ap-plications.

Operators don’t have to worry about diesel particu-late filter (DPF) cleaning as it still occurs automatically

with no impact to machine operation. Extensive test-ing allowed John Deere’s DPF to go up to 15,000 hours before ash removal. Additionally, all models feature excellent total fluid economy (diesel fuel and DEF).

The new crawler mod-els continue to utilize hy-drostatic transmissions, a feature John Deere pio-neered in crawler dozers in North America in 1976. Updates were made to the electronic control system for improved response and controllability, increasing productivity and enhancing the operator experience.

Machine hydraulics were updated for improved performance and responses as well as offering optional electro-hydraulic controls for both the Power-Angle-Tilt and Outside Dozer blade configurations. A high flow hydraulic pump is now available for both pilot controls and the up-dated electro-hydraulic system. The EH system is more responsive to opera-

tor inputs and the machine will significantly grade bet-ter when equipped with a grade control system.

Another new feature that comes along with the new electro-hydraulic con-trol system is a new color LCD display monitor. This new monitor provides en-hanced onboard diagnos-tics with real time values for every temperature, pressure, and speed sen-sor on the machine. The crawler dozers constantly monitor transmission tem-perature to avoid damage to the hydrostat system.

When the 750K and 850K are ordered with the new electro-hydraulic con-trols, they are grade con-trol ready to accept the grade control system of the customer’s choice. John Deere’s “open-architec-ture” design lets customers easily employ their favor-ite brand of grade-control system – Trimble, Topcon, or Leica. For Topcon cus-tomers, both models can be factory-installed with a Topcon 3D-MC2 grade control system for faster availability and the ability to finance the system with the dozer purchaser.

To keep operators up and running, both the 750K and 850K come equipped with John Deere’s exclu-sive V-Cool package. This system incorporates a cool on demand hydraulically driven fan that isolates coolers from dust and en-gine heat for increased ef-ficiency and durability. In addition, the V-Cool is po-

sitioned behind the heavy-duty grille and fan, making the coolers less vulnerable to the rigors of the jobsite. The coolers are also easily accessible for ground level service.

Operators looking to get the most out of their 750K/850K can rely on Ultimate Uptime featuring John Deere WorkSight. With Ultimate Uptime, op-erators receive pre-delivery and follow-up inspections; three years of JD Link telematics, machine heath prognostics, and remote diagnostics and program-ming capability; and the ability to add additional dealer-provided uptime solutions to customize the package to individual needs.

For additional informa-

tion and model-specific specifications on the new 750K and 850K, visit John-Deere.com or contact your local dealer. About Deere & Company

Doosan has introduced its first Tier 4-compli-ant wheel loaders — the DL300-5, DL350-5, DL420-5, DL450-5 and DL550-5 — with a horsepower range of 271 hp in the DL300-5 to 379 hp in the DL550-5. Improvements in fuel ef-ficiency, operator comfort, serviceability, reliabil-ity and remote monitoring with Doosan Telematics are all features that make the new Doosan wheel loaders stand out from oth-er brands.Tier 4 solution

The five new Doosan wheel loader models re-place the previous interim Tier 4 (iT4) models and are powered by Scania diesel engines. The engines are optimized for use with a high-pressure common-rail (HPCR) fuel delivery sys-tem and a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR) system. They utilize a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) to reduce particulate matter (PM) and selective catalyst reduction (SCR) aftertreatment to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) — the same technology used to achieve iT4 compliance in this size class. Addition-ally, the wheel loaders use a variety of aftertreatment systems as part of the Tier 4 compliance, such as die-sel exhaust fluid (DEF), which is used with SCR technology and stored in a DEF tank.

Doosan added a mass airflow sensor and exhaust brake to its existing diesel technologies to help meet Tier 4 emission standards.

The mass airflow sensor allows the electronic con-trol unit (ECU) to improve the management of airflow from the variable geometry turbocharger (VGT), and to optimize fuel delivery to the combustion chamber based on engine air intake volume and rpm. The VGT is utilized to enhance boost pressure throughout a wide rpm range of the engine, resulting in improved fuel efficiency at lower rpms. This also generates higher torque levels and faster en-gine response even at low rpm. The exhaust brake helps to maintain consis-tent engine temperatures at lower engine speeds to im-prove operating efficiency. Consistent engine tempera-tures reduce harmful emis-sion levels in the exhaust when the engine is running at lower rpms. Under nor-mal operation, with high rpms, the exhaust brake is inactive.New wheel loader features

New Doosan wheel loaders feature cab en-hancements including an improved adjustable steer-ing column to provide more leg room, ease of operation and more floor space. Also inside the cab, a new fuel consumption gauge in-forms operators how much fuel the machine is using in real time. Updates to the keypad on the dashboard make it easier for operators to review, adjust settings and to clean and maintain it. Overall, visibility within the cab and around the ma-chine has been improved

too.All five new Doosan

wheel loaders have an au-to-shutdown system to help reduce fuel consumption when the machine is sitting idle. Operators can config-ure the idle time from 3 to 60 minutes. When enabled, the feature will shut down the excavator’s engine when the preset idle time is met. This is particularly helpful in California where state regulations require idling for only 5 minutes for off-highway machines. Rear LED lamps provide better visibility, especially when working on a jobsite at night. Limited slip dif-ferentials are also included and allow the machines to have more traction when working.

Updates to improve ser-viceability include a new air cleaner with longer re-placement intervals. Ad-ditional oil sampling ports improve predictive main-tenance procedures and various fluid pressures are now viewable via the dash panel, allowing monitoring from the cab. Available as a factory-installed option, an auto-greasing system replaces daily greasing and helps to extend bearing bushing life. The optional auto-greasing system will grease the correct amount and when it’s needed to avoid over-greasing and under-greasing, which rep-resents a considerable time savings for fleet owners and rental companies.

For applications in mining and infrastructure market segments, Doosan offers a high-lift configura-tion for all five new wheel loaders, providing addi-tional dump height. Added dump height is particularly useful for operators who regularly load trucks and need additional lift height to efficiently dump mate-rial into the truck.

Options for the DL300-5 through DL450-5 wheel loaders include the follow-ing:• Hydraulic locking front

and conventional rear differential,

• Axle oil cooler (DL420-5 and larger),

• Emergency steer,• Electric joystick steering

• Rotating beacon• Rubber fender protectors

and full fender with rub-ber protectorThe DL550-5 includes

all the same options as the DL300-5 through DL450-5, except for the hydraulic locking front and conven-tional rear differential, which are standard equip-ment.Selectable work modes

The DL300-5 through DL550-5 wheel loaders fea-ture three selectable work modes — Economy, Stan-dard and Power — to bet-ter balance fuel consump-tion and machine power to the working conditions.

Economy mode: reduc-es fuel consumption for low-demand applications and slows down machine movement for conditions that require extra precision

Standard power mode: balances the wheel load-er’s fuel consumption for everyday digging, grading and lifting tasks

Power mode: provides superior power and per-formance for tough digging conditions and truck load-ing tasksDoosan Telematics

Doosan wheel load-ers come with a standard 3-year subscription to Doosan Telematics, which

allows equipment own-ers and fleet managers to remotely monitor machine location, hours, fuel usage, engine idle versus work time, error codes and en-gine as well as hydraulic temperatures. Machines can be monitored via an online Doosan Telematics account. In addition, Doo-san dealers can provide im-proved customer support using the system by re-sponding to machine warn-ing messages and alerts, by troubleshooting machine issues, and then sending a field service vehicle to help with repairs and the proper parts. b

The Wacker Neuson Group is building a produc-tion line for skid steer and compact track loaders at its U.S. facility in Menomonee Falls, Wisc. The facility will go on stream in the first quarter of 2015, initially manufacturing four mod-els. The U.S. is the largest market for skid steer load-ers. “Our strategy is ‘in the region for the region,’ so it makes sense for us to build skid steer loaders in the region where de-mand is strongest – North America,” explained Cem Peksaglam, CEO of Wacker Neuson SE. “We unveiled four loader models tai-lored to the needs of the North American market at the start of the year and received positive feedback from dealers and custom-ers alike. Producing these products in North America will speed up time-to-mar-ket and enable us to adapt these high-quality, power-

ful machines more rapidly to the specific customer requirements of this core market.”

“We took feedback from contractors and us-ers in the region who regularly work with these machines, and channeled these insights into the de-velopment of our new skid steer loaders. Our deal-ers and customers were quickly won over by the high-quality components as well as the new, even more user-friendly cab and powerful performance capabilities of our skid steer loaders,” said Chris-topher Barnard, regional president of Wacker Neu-son in North America. “The new skid steer loader series rounds off our port-folio of compact machines in North America, making us an even more attractive partner for dealers.”

The four models will initially only be distrib-

uted via the US and Ca-nadian dealer network. With a presence in the United States since 1957, the Wacker Neuson facility in Menomonee Falls near Milwaukee was built in 1986 and recently again ex-panded in 2012. Covering an area of 260,000 square meters, the site is home to the Wacker Neuson Corpo-ration headquarters and its research and development departments. The compa-ny also produces trowels for the concrete technol-ogy business field here as well as rammers, rollers and trench rollers for the compaction business field and generators and pumps for the worksite technology field.

From 2015 on, Menomonee Falls will also be producing the skid steer loaders SW24 and SW28 with payloads of 2,400 and 2,800 pounds respectively (around 1.1 and 1.4 tons)

while the compact track loaders ST35 and ST45 will have payloads of 3,500 and 4,500 pounds respectively (around 1.6 and 2.1 tons). Concurrently, a local devel-opment team is working on further models to broaden the line.

Up until now, Wacker Neuson produced skid steer loaders at its Hörsching site in Austria. “Demand for our dumpers and ex-cavators is growing world-wide. We will be using the free capacity at Hörsching from 2015 on to expand our dumper and excava-

tor production capabilities here. Thus, there will be no layoffs at the site,” adds Peksaglam. “Our current skid steer loader models for North America were jointly developed by teams in Austria and the U.S. So we will also have access to in-depth expertise and a wealth of experience in the development and produc-tion of skid steer loaders at the new site.” The facility in Hörsching, near Linz, has been in operation since 2012 and is a cutting-edge production facility for com-pact equipment. b
