It is with heavy hearts that we announce the pass-ing of Robert (Bob) Edg-erton Mohr on Thursday June 11, 2015. After a brief but heroic battle with lung cancer, Bob went peace-fully with his four children and his brother, Charlie, by his side. Bob handled his illness the same way he handled his life - with de-termination, humility and the attitude: “It is what it is, now let’s get it done”.

Bob was born on May 26, 1943 in Calgary, Alber-ta to Murray and Mickey Mohr. He was the youngest of three boys and he and his brothers, Charlie and John, were known in the neighbourhood for their mischievous antics. Bob developed a love of cars and bought his first one, a 1931 Chrysler Imperial, at the age of 14. He went on to build hot rods, stock cars, drag race cars and in-board boats with his bud-dies. He was an avid stock car racer and raced in Cal-gary, Nanton, Lethbridge and Rosebud where he had his fair share of wins and endless fun.

Bob turned his love for cars and mechanics into a profession and started an automotive apprenticeship at a Volkswagen garage. He attended SAIT and be-came certified in 1965 as a Red Seal Motor Vehicle Mechanic. This led to his job at Pioneer Machinery

in Calgary where he was introduced to the world of aggregate equipment. He advanced very quickly and went on to travel as a sales representative for Agg Mac. Customers marvelled at his uncanny knack for the industry and would tease him that the compa-ny should be called Mohr Mac instead of Agg Mac. He took that feedback to heart and in 1980; he offi-cially opened the doors of Mormak Equipment Ltd. in Vernon, BC. Mormak developed an international reputation as an indus-try leader and grew to in-clude a branch in Calgary, Alberta and Chilliwack, BC. Although Bob sold his company in 2013, he re-mained on as CEO and was still working up until one month ago. When people would ask when he was going to retire, Bob would reply with a glint in his eye, “I’ll retire when it stops be-ing fun … right now, I’m still havin’ fun. “Bob was a man of many passions, which included ranching, snowmobiling, attend-ing rodeos, embarking on motorcycle road trips and, most importantly, spend-ing treasured time with family and friends. He was extremely proud of each of his children, Nicole (Lee), Brandice (Rob), Michael (Melanie), Kalvin (Oksa-na), and always made time for them despite his heavy

business responsibilities.Bob also loved each of

his grandchildren beyond measure. Liviah, Rowan, Clay and Parker were very fortunate to have had him as their grandpa even for this short amount of time. His inquisitive, mischie-vous and loving spirit will forever live on in them.

An outdoor celebration of life was held on Mon-day, June 22, 2015 at the Historic O’Keefe Ranch. Bob requested that this gathering be held after the tears have dried but there will always be a tear in our eye for the loss of this great man. We will seek comfort in one of Bob’s favourite quotes: “Whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.” In lieu of flow-ers, memorial donations can be made in Bob’s name to the BC Cancer Founda-tion or the 4-H British Co-lumbia Foundation. Con-dolences may be offered to the family at [email protected] b

Kobe Steel, Ltd. and its group companies, Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. and Kobelco Cranes Co., Ltd., have agreed to begin considering a business merger of Kobel-co Construction Machinery and Kobelco Cranes. Con-siderations will commence with the aim of integrat-ing the two companies on April 1, 2016.

The Kobe Steel Group’s construction equipment business, consisting of hydraulic excavators and cranes, currently operates through two companies, with the launching of Ko-belco Construction Ma-chinery in October 1999, followed by an alliance with the former CNH Glob-al N.V. in October 2002, and a spin-off of the crane business into a separate company in April 2004.

To capture growing demand throughout the world, both Kobelco Con-struction Machinery and Kobelco Cranes have been implementing their respec-

tive strategies and plans for global expansion, and both companies have con-tinued to grow. With com-bined sales of nearly 400 billion yen from the two operations, the construc-tion equipment business is an important segment, comprising about a 20 per-cent share of the Kobe Steel Group’s consolidated sales.

Under the medium-term business plan launched in May 2013 covering fiscal years 2013 to 2015, the Kobe Steel Group said it would adopt a policy of strategically expanding its machinery-related businesses. In the United States where demand continues to be strong, Kobelco Construc-tion Machinery is under-taking active develop-ments, making a decision at the end of 2014 to build an excavator plant in that country. Furthermore, es-tablishing a presence in the global market — in-cluding India, the Middle East and other emerging

countries and regions where demand is antici-pated to grow — is an ur-gent issue for Kobe Steel’s construction equipment business.

The Kobe Steel Group intends to enhance coop-eration between the two companies to improve business efficiency, from development to procure-ment, and covering pro-duction, quality and sales. The Group has previously been considering ways of further enhancing its global development capa-bilities in growth markets. At this time, the Group has decided to earnestly begin considerations for a merger of the two con-struction equipment com-panies.

Through the business merger, the combined exca-vator and crane businesses will benefit from more ef-ficient operations that will further strengthen their business foundation. At the same time, the merger is anticipated to accelerate global development of the excavator and crane busi-nesses, further contribute to spreading the KOBELCO brand, and increase the en-terprise value of the Kobe Steel Group. b

LoJack Corporation, a vehicle theft recovery busi-ness, recently announced that it has surpassed 10,000 subscriptions un-der agreement to provide subscribers with a range of services for Construc-tion Equipment, “Main Street” Fleet Vehicles and Inventory Management for Dealerships. With a major-ity of these subscriptions in the field, and the balance rolling out in the coming months, the benefits of the services are becoming rec-ognized among customers as valuable contributions to their businesses.

“This major milestone serves to validate our strat-egy to expand the LoJack brand beyond our founda-tion of Stolen Vehicle Re-covery,” said Randy Ortiz, president and CEO of Lo-Jack. “We have leveraged our well-known brand and distribution channels in the U.S. to establish telemat-ics offerings that provide subscription-based services to our customers that are relevant on a daily basis.”

LoJack’s telematics of-ferings meet the unique requirements of the com-plicated fleet, construc-tion and dealership indus-try. The company’s key telematics products and solutions include:

LoJack Connect for Equipment – ruggedized solution for fleets of con-struction equipment: Lo-Jack Connect for Equip-

LoJack Fleet Manage-ment Powered by Tom-Tom – for “Main Street” fleets: LoJack delivers advanced solutions that help businesses grow and streamline their operations. The recently announced integration with Intuit’s QuickBase with the power of the LoJack Fleet Man-agement platform gives LoJack Fleet Management customers the data, tools and insights to improve ef-ficiencies from lead genera-tion to project completion throughout their on-road fleet of vehicles.

LoJack IM1 Inventory Management System – for dealers: The technology enables dealership person-nel through tablets, smart-phones and other mobile

devices, to verify vehicle location, quickly access rel-evant vehicle information, track test drives and receive early-warning alerts if a ve-hicle is moved from a geo-fenced location. Currently in pilot phase, LoJack IM1 cus-tomers can see streamlined processes that can result in a more efficient dealership and better overall customer service.

In bringing fleet & in-ventory management to the market, LoJack has col-laborated with global solu-tion providers to deliver world-class capabilities to its customers in the U.S. market. Those underly-ing technologies service over 500,000 subscriptions world-wide.

“Over the next year, Lo-Jack will continue to build on our successful Pre-install strategy with our Stolen Ve-hicle Recovery business and accelerate our move into telematics, by leveraging the strength of our brand and U.S. distribution,” contin-ued Ortiz. “For the first time in LoJack’s history, we are establishing a new level of relevance for our customers by providing products and services that can be used every day to manage critical business operations.” b

US House passed H.R. 2393, the Country of Origin Labelling Amend-ments Act, by a vote of 300-131. Introduced by House Agriculture Com-mittee Chairman K. Mi-chael Conaway (R-TX), H.R. 2393 amends the Agriculture Marketing Act of 1946 to effectively repeal mandatory coun-try of origin labelling requirements for beef, pork, and chicken.

“I am thankful for the support of my colleagues in passing this common-sense, bipartisan bill that is a necessary tar-geted response to avoid retaliation from Canada and Mexico. Two of our top trading partners an-nounced earlier this month their intention to seek more than $3 billion in retaliatory sanctions against U.S. exports. This would extend far beyond the agriculture industry and would hurt nearly every sector of the U.S. economy. H.R. 2393

will prevent retaliation and bring the U.S. back into compliance, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to act quickly on this urgent matter,” said Chairman Conaway.

“Today’s passage of the COOL Amend-ments Act is a critical step towards ensuring that the United States is no longer burdened by a law that harms our economy and our na-tion’s beef, pork, and poultry producers. Cali-fornia exports billions of dollars of commodi-ties and manufactured goods to Canada and Mexico, many of which are produced in the San Joaquin Valley. The tar-iff retaliations will cost California more than $1 billion, inflicting a devastating blow to the state’s economic well-being. Country of Origin Labelling is a very real problem that requires a legislative fix. The COOL Amendments Act

will put the U.S. back in compliance with its international trade ob-ligations and stop trade retaliations by two of the nation’s top export partners,” said Rep. Jim Costa (D-CA), Ranking Member of the House Agriculture Committee’s Livestock and Foreign Agriculture Committee.

“Today, the House of Representatives con-tinued the work started in the House Committee on Agriculture to repeal the non-trade compli-ant COOL law. We look forward to working with our Senate colleagues to send this legislation to the President in an effort to protect our American businesses. After multi-ple failed attempts at the World Trade Organization to bring the COOL law into compliance with our trading partners, Canada and Mexico, the House has done its part expedi-tiously to guarantee that no American industries are hurt through retali-ation,” said Rep. David Rouzer (R-NC), Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee’s Livestock and Foreign Agriculture Committee. b

The new Volvo EW160E and EW180E wheeled excavators are versatile machines for utility or road construction with in-creased reach, better vis-ibility and improved grad-ing performance.

The latest wheeled ex-cavators from Volvo Con-struction Equipment, the EW160E and EW180E, are multi-tasking machines designed to cater to all the operator’s needs on the jobsite. Both models can be tailored to suit customers’ precise specifications, with a whole range of flexible configurations that allow operators to change attach-ments quickly and easily, and add on useful features.Powerful efficiency

Powered by robust Vol-vo D6 Tier 4 Final engines, both machines are de-signed to operate at lower engine rpm with an auto-matic idling system, which reduces fuel consumption and results in quieter oper-ation, all while maintaining impressive power. Volvo unique ECO mode reduces flow and pressure losses in the hydraulic system, fur-ther resulting in improved fuel efficiency without any loss of performance.Flexibility to accomplish any job

Customers can choose from 12 different configu-rations of tires (including single and twin) from eight different suppliers, to best match anticipated ground conditions. Customers can also select different arm lengths in line with jobsite requirements.

Optional hydraulic func-tions ‘X1 breaker/shear’

and ‘X3 tilt rotate’ provide power for attachments that require one- or two-way flow, as well as a two-way flow for tilting or rotating attachments, respectively. The corresponding buck-ets, breakers and grapples (together with a quick coupler) have all been purpose-built to work in perfect harmony with Vol-vo machines, forming one solid reliable unit.

Not only can operators change attachments quick-ly and easily to perform all tasks on the jobsite, they can also bring them along wherever they go in a spe-cial tool box drawer that slides out from the under-carriage, saving time in transport and ensuring the excavator is always ready to work. This newly devel-oped feature can carry up to 264 pounds (120 kg). Box dividers, which can be adjusted into five different positions, help the operator stay organized, while a me-chanical stopper prevents the drawer from sliding out during transport or opera-tion. There is further stor-age inside the cab, as well as ample leg room.

Both models are ap-proved for road use and can be fitted with a trailer hitch that can pull up to 17,637 pounds (8 tons) with dry run brakes and 6,613 pounds (3 tons) without brakes.

“Our powerful new wheeled excavators come with increased versatility and customer-focused fea-tures, like an ergonomical-ly designed cab with easy control access, and options like the Volvo Smart View

camera system, which pro-vides 360-degree visibility from the cab,” said Rob Palermo, product manager, General Purpose Equip-ment Products. “Operators can work comfortably and efficiently until the job gets done.”Comfort and control

With a redesigned Hu-man Machine Interface (HMI) system, all the ma-chine controls have been ergonomically positioned for optimum control and efficiency, and the number of switches has been signif-icantly reduced to simplify operator tasks with conve-nient, intuitive shortcuts and a larger 8-inch display.

Excellent all-round vis-ibility is provided by the large windshield — both models have an improved view to the right — as well as the new optional Volvo Smart View feature. With Volvo Smart View, three cameras attached to dif-ferent corners of the ma-chine — the front, side and rear — combine to show real-time footage of the machine operating from above. The three cameras also film individual views of the front, side and rear of the machine. This intel-ligent and industry-leading technology helps the op-erator to see all angles and ensure safe rotation.

In addition to a com-fortable and convenient work environment, pro-ductivity is also increased by the excellent control afforded by the EW160E and EW180E excavators. The boom suspension sys-tem, for example, with its hydraulic circuit and gas pressure dampers, enables the operator to travel faster over bumpy roads or rough terrain, while the overall hydraulic system has also

Atlas Copco unveiled several pieces of equip-ment during its March dealer event in Phoenix. The event introduced many models of At-las Copco construction equipment, including the CT3000 tamping soil compactor, the CP1200 and CP2700 pneumatic tired asphalt rollers and the intelligent compaction system. Atlas Copco held the event to give dealers a first-hand look at the new products, technologies and sales tools.

“Having people see our new equipment and tech-nology in action shows that we’re committed to rein-forcing our customer sup-port,” said Brian Bieller, Atlas Copco vice president and road construction equipment business line manager. “The best way to accomplish that is to roll them all out at once and demonstrate their capabili-ties.”

Dealers had the op-portunity to climb aboard

the equipment and take some of the latest models for a test spin. They also learned about some of the new technology Atlas Copco is launching, includ-ing its intelligent compac-tion system, which will be available on Atlas Copco CC2000 through CC6200 asphalt rollers and CA2500 through CA6500 soil roll-ers.

Atlas Copco previewed its new, easy-to-use intel-ligent compaction system during the event. The IC system gives contrac-tors and equipment op-erators’ real-time mate-rial stiffness readings to ensure superior soil and asphalt compaction. For instance, the IC system allows operators to view their progress and ensure accurate pass counts. From a quality assurance standpoint, its saves con-tractors significant time and money because they can pull real-time data to prove that the work site received consistent

compaction. The system features a touch screen that is easy to navigate and read, making it user-friendly and convenient. And it will be equipped with Atlas Copco’s Dyn link fleet management system, which contributes to equipment wellness and theft deterrence.

The event also allowed dealers to experience op-timal operator comfort and visibility with the equipment – a hallmark of Atlas Copco’s Road Construction division. For instance, The CT3000 features padfoot drums mounted on rubber tires to effectively absorb im-pact during operation, which minimizes vibra-tions to the cab to create a more comfortable ride. Several rollers, includ-ing the new CP1200 and CP2700 pneumatic tired asphalt rollers, feature a rotating seat, giving the operator a clear view of the drum edge for better precision. Spacious plat-forms and dual swing-out seats enhance visibility and operator comfort on the new F1000T paver – benefits that are key to ef-ficiency, productivity and profitably. b

Brandt Tractor is the world’s largest privately held John Deere Construction and Forestry Equipment dealer and a Platinum member of the Canada’s Best Managed Companies Program.

John Deere is updating its ejector scraper line with two and four wheel tire op-tions to better serve earth-moving contractors. The 1612DE, 2010DE, 2014DE, 2412DE are designed for customers who require larger capacities, lower op-erating costs, faster cycle times, and appreciate an extended warranty.

The ability to move more material and increase productivity helps contrac-tors lower the cost per cu-bic yard of material moved. As such, added capacity is the number one customer requested product en-hancement.

“The two tire and larg-er capacity scraper seg-ments are growing fast and earthmovers expect a scraper system with more capacity for in-creased productivity, less complex hitching and at-tachment options, and stronger warranty cover-age,” said David Wilson, product marketing man-ager, scraper systems,

John Deere Construction & Forestry. “These new ejector capacities also convert more evenly into tons, making them com-pare well to articulated dump trucks while more closely aligning to self-propelled scraper capac-ity ratings.”

Contractors looking for increased productivity on the jobsite will welcome greater floatation and re-duced drag in wet, heavy clay conditions. Two tire options on the 2010DE and 2412DE models per-mit higher productivity and less wear in harsh condi-tions. The two wheels also allow quicker cycle times with less rolling resistance and drag, which can re-duce costs per cubic yard.

The scraper systems also boast less complicated hitching and attachment options. This includes an integrated push block, Quik Attach Hitch, and spill guard that feature fewer parts and are easier to configure and match –

all saving time when using the equipment. A single, 60 mm hitch pin on all scrap-ers will dramatically reduce user complexity.

“John Deere ejector scrapers help contractors move dirt for one third the initial investment, half the labor, and offer up to 50 cents per cubic yards sav-ings over self-propelled earthmoving equipment,” said Wilson.

The new John Deere D-Series scrapers will also feature a best-in-class 12 month warranty.

Operators looking to get the most out of their tractors with 1612DE, 2010DE, 2014DE, and 2412DE pans can rely on Ultimate Uptime featur-ing John Deere Work-Sight. With Ultimate Up-time, operators receive pre-delivery and follow-up inspections, and the ability to add additional dealer-provided uptime solutions to customize the package to individual needs.

For additional informa-tion and model-specific specifications on the new 1612DE, 2010DE, 2014DE, and 2412DE, visit john-deere.com or contact your local dealer. b

John Deere is adding more tools to its Opera-tions Centre within My-JohnDeere and making it easy to wirelessly transfer data from older John Deere equipment and non-John Deere displays to the Oper-ations Centre with Mobile Data Transfer.

Mobile Data Transfer enables customers to wire-lessly transfer agronomic data to and from non-John Deere displays and from John Deere’s GreenStar 3

2630 display (in older John Deere equipment that is not JDLink compatible) to the Operations Centre. It enables producers to con-solidate data from multiple branded displays into one centralized location for their use or to be shared with trusted advisors.

“Mobile Data Transfer is the simple solution for customers who run older or mixed-fleet equipment and want immediate ac-cess of information stored in their displays. It elimi-nates the manual trans-fer of data,” explains Jeff Nolting, John Deere In-telligent Solutions Group (ISG). “It’s a USB to Wi-Fi device that plugs into the display and transfers data using your smartphone via the Mobile Data Trans-fer app. Your phone sends the data to the Operations Centre to give farm man-agers and trusted advisors immediate access.”

There are multiple ways to get data into the Opera-

tions Centre where it can be put to use. Mobile Data Transfer works with a va-riety of in-cab displays and mobile devices to facilitate the transfer of information. If you are running older John Deere equipment and have not yet moved to a JDLink Connect enabled machine, Mobile Data Transfer is a great way to get started. Operations Centre: MyJobs App

The Operations Centre is where you’ll access the tools to start your plan-ning with the MyJobs app. These tools allow a manag-er to define a job that needs to be done, and it includes all of the specifics of that job. “Add Jobs” automati-cally syncs up with the “My Jobs” app on mobile devic-es of operators and other employees. They receive a detailed jobs order in real time versus spending hours on the telephone or manag-ing “to do” lists that can be lost or misplaced.

The Operations Centre and the MyJobs app keep everything in order by keeping track of the year-to-year changes that can bring about higher efficien-cy and yields. b

A multibi l l ion-dollar liquefied natural gas

project led by Royal Dutch Shell was given the envi-ronmental go-ahead on Wednesday, subject to dozens of conditions.

The LNG Canada proj-ect — planned for Kitimat B.C. — obtained the bless-ing of both the federal and British Columbia govern-ments following a stream-lined review process.

The federal govern-ment has decided the en-vironmental impacts of the LNG Canada project are justified in the cir-cumstances, Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq said in a release.

Ottawa’s approval comes with 50 legally bind-ing conditions dealing with

fish habitat, migratory birds, human health and a host of other matters.

“The LNG Canada Ex-port Terminal Project un-derwent a thorough sci-ence-based environmental assessment conducted by the Government of British Columbia, which included extensive and meaningful consultations with the pub-lic and aboriginal groups,” Aglukkaq said.

Meanwhile, provincial Environment Minister Mary Polak and Natural Gas Development Minis-ter Rich Coleman issued an Environmental Assess-ment Certificate for the project.

The provincial approval comes with 24 conditions dealing with greenhouse

gases, wildlife impacts and aboriginal consultation, among other things.

LNG Canada is the first project to be granted a certificate under a single review process that meets both federal and B.C. re-quirements. The “sub-stituted” environmental assessment is meant to eliminate duplication be-tween federal and provin-cial processes.

The LNG Canada part-ners — Shell and compa-nies from Japan, China and Korea — still have a lot of work ahead. They must de-termine whether moving forward with the project makes business sense and they aim to make a final investment decision next year.

“We have made signifi-cant progress to advance our project over the past year,” LNG Canada CEO Andy Calitz said in a re-lease.

“Receiving both pro-vincial and federal ap-proval of our environmen-tal assessment is a critical milestone on our path to making a final investment decision. We could not have achieved this with-out input from the local community of Kitimat and

First Nations, and we ap-preciate the local knowl-edge they shared with us.”

LNG Canada expects 7,500 workers will be em-ployed during peak con-struction and an estimated $8 billion will be spent on goods and services within Canada, including $3 bil-lion in B.C.

There are 19 projects currently proposed for the West Coast, but observers only expect a handful to be

built.Last week, another B.C.

LNG player passed a major milestone.

Pacific NorthWest LNG, led by Malaysia’s Petronas, formally decided to move ahead with its project near Prince Rupert, B.C.. But its final investment decision hinges on obtaining federal environmental approval and a development agree-ment with the B.C. govern-ment passing in the provin-cial legislature.b

A country rich with oil, the Kingdom of Saudi Ara-bia has unique equipment needs when it comes to the oil industry. Lifting and heavy hauling companies like Gulf Haulage Heavy Lift (GHHL), Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (K.S.A.), must be ready to quickly respond to projects demanding the specialized equipment necessary to build and repair oil refin-eries, critical to K.S.A.’s economy.

Changing environmen-tal regulation updates fur-ther complicate business practices by changing the design parameters of re-fining equipment, so lift-ing companies must have flexible equipment in their fleets in order to adapt to these evolving needs. For example, the Saudi Ara-bian Government’s envi-ronmental improvement program recently increased the height standards for flare stacks used to burn off flammable gas generated by the oil refining process.

Saudi Aramaco was the first oil company to install a flare stack at its Yanbu, K.S.A. facility under these new environmental guide-lines. The structure in-stalled was constructed to a height of 200 m (656 ft). With stack structure seg-ments weighing from 21 to 104 tonnes (23 to 115 US tons), GHHL was hired to provide the heavy lifting. The combination of struc-ture weight and height and difficult site conditions meant that only one crane in GHHL’s fleets was the right choice to efficiently complete the job on time and within budget, the Ter-ex CC 8800-1.

The sheer size and weight of structure seg-ments made the con-struction project difficult enough. However, the Yanbu refinery’s location, nearby the Red Sea, severe-ly limited the time crews had to complete each lift.

“Every day at approxi-mately 11:00 hours winds would increase from a light breeze of 2 m/s (4.5 mph) to sustained gusts reaching 16 m/s (35.8 mph), and this would sometimes continue all afternoon and evening,” ex-plained Sanjay Pachisia, gen-eral manager of GHHL. This was well outside the project’s

permissible lift wind speed levels, which ranged from 4.1 m/s (9.2 mph) to 7.1 m/s (15.9 mph), depending on which flare section was being positioned.

The project also re-quired a low ground bear-ing pressure of 12 t/m2 (1.3 t/ft2) for construct-ing the crane’s boom con-figurations and lifting the flare stack. “The CC 8800-1 crawler crane has 2-m (6.6-ft) wide tracks and offers a wide 10.5-m (34.4-ft) stance to help disburse the weight over a wide area for heavy lift proj-ects,” says Christian Kass-ner, Senior Sales Manager for Terex Cranes. A wide crawler stance plus the use of heavy-duty, 5-m-long x 2.8-m-wide x 0.36-m-thick (16.4 ft x 9.2 ft x 1.2 ft) thick steel matting helped GHHL’s operators meet the project’s ground pressure requirements for the crane.

Additionally, precise rigging and flare section placement was a must on this project. “The center of gravity for each section was not in the center of the flare structures due to the risers, nor was the section installed in the center of the struc-ture,” says Pachisia.

With the site challenges and flare section size and weight known, GHHL pre-pared and mobilized the CC 8800-1 crane components for the nearly 1,400 km (870-mi) trip from its Dammam headquarters to the Yanbu project site. “To move the crane, we used 7 heavy duty trailers, 12 low-bed trailers and 40 flat-bed trailers with 12-m (39.4-ft) deck lengths,” says Pachisia.

Designed and built as a series, the 1,600-t (1,764-US t) capacity Terex CC 8800-1 crane has a stan-dardized production pro-cess, so that transportation, rigging and maintenance ease are built into each crane. “Every component is less than 3.5-m (11.5-ft) wide, and most com-ponents have a shipping weight of less than 40 t (44 US t),” adds Kassner. “By making the crane as a pro-duction model, Terex of-fers significant advantages over competitive, one-off custom-design cranes that are made to meet a specific market’s need.”

Once on site, GHHL’s

five-person rigging crew began crane assembly. For the first lift, which placed the third-level flare seg-ment 100.3-m (329.1-ft) above ground level, the CC 8800-1 was equipped with 108 m (354.3 ft) of main boom and its super-lift system to hoist the 104 t (114.6 US t) section into place.

For the second and third lifts, which placed the level four segment and level five structure into position, crews simply reconfigured the crane by adding its luff-

ing jib on the main boom. “We chose the crane con-figurations carefully, in a way that the change consisted of only adding luffing jib boom sections and not change the main boom length,” says Pachi-sia. “This way, we reduced crane reconfiguration time substantially.” Hydraulic pin connections between boom segments greatly simplified adding boom segments.

The final three lifts for flare structure levels six through eight required one

final configuration change. In addition to the main boom, crews used the luff-ing jib – configured to the maximum boom length of 216 m (708 ft) – and avail-able Runner Winch, so they would have the neces-sary height and control to place these segments.

In all, the Yanbu Ar-amco Sinopec Refinery Project required just 11 working days to complete the six complex lifts to fin-ish placing the flare stack segments. Once completed, crews disassembled the

CC 8800-1 crane and mo-bilized it back to GHHL’s Dammam facility, a pro-cess that took approximate-ly 10 days.

“We have received first-class service from Terex and the CC 8800-1 crane on this and other projects,” says Pachisia. “We ap-preciate every effort taken by the Terex after sales department to provide us with technical assistance, day or night, so we can be successful with difficult projects like the flare stack project in Yanbu.” b

Williams College cele-brated its recently complet-ed Class of 1966 Environ-mental Center, a restoration and expansion of a historic building that seeks to meet the Living Building Chal-lenge, the most rigorous and advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment. The celebra-tion included a public lec-ture by William Moomaw ’59 on Friday, April 17, and a dedication of the Envi-ronmental Center on Satur-day, April 18.

The Living Building Challenge (LBC) program certifies buildings that have positive, regenerative envi-ronmental and community effects. Twenty impera-tives set ambitious goals for energy (100 percent generated on site), water (100 percent captured, used, treated, and returned to the ground on site), materials (avoiding com-monly known toxins, such as formaldehyde and PVC, while supporting local and regional manufacturers), and on-site food produc-tion (more than a third of the site was used for organ-ic food production).

For a building to meet the Living Building Chal-

lenge, it must demonstrate net-zero energy and water consumption for one year of full occupancy. Seven buildings worldwide have so far met the challenge, and the Environmental Centre is among the first 25 to be registered in the pro-gram. It is likely to become the first historic renovation in the U.S. to meet the Liv-ing Building Challenge.

“Our ambitions for this building speak to our com-mitment to the environ-ment more broadly, and that’s not just about limit-ing harm; it’s about work-ing to improve our planet,” says Williams president Adam Falk. “The Class of 1966 Environmental Center connects what students are learning in the classroom to their deep passions and activism around environ-mental issues, and it serves as a remarkable working model for what’s possible.”

Charley Stevenson ’93, principal at Integrated Eco Strategy, worked closely with the college and Black River Design Architects on the design and opera-tion of the Environmental Center. He says a large part of the Living Build-ing Challenge is about ad-

vocating for change in the market. “For years, we’ve had the technology and know-how to design and construct buildings that take care of all their own needs, while minimizing external impacts,” says Stevenson. “Achieving this high performance requires changes in the materi-als marketplace and new regulatory frameworks. LBC projects advocate for these advancements, and they serve to bring these approaches into the main-stream of construction.”

Williams’ new Environ-mental Center occupies the building formerly known as Kellogg House, which was built in 1794 as a home for the college’s first president, Ebenezer Fitch. It has been renovated and moved three times and was used as faculty housing for many years. In 1978, it became the home of the Center for Environmental Studies program, and now—with the renovation and addi-tion to the building—it houses both the academic program and the Zilkha Center for Environmental Initiatives, the administra-tive operation that focuses on sustainability across the

college. In addition to fac-ulty and staff offices, the building has a classroom, kitchen, reading room, and an outdoor amphitheater, and it is open to students 24 hours a day. The project was supported significantly by gifts from alumni and grants, and the Class of 1966 provided the naming gift in honor of its upcom-ing 50th reunion.

Planning for the reno-vations to Kellogg House began in 2010. The result-ing building maximizes useful space, minimizes energy and water demand, and will use on-site solar energy and rooftop water collection to produce 100 percent of the energy and water required for its oper-ation. The offices are com-pact, and the larger rooms play triple duty, serving as classrooms and meeting rooms during the academic day, student study spaces and workrooms in the

evenings, and social and informal gathering spaces for faculty, students, staff, and alumni throughout the year. Faculty and staff moved into the building in February.

“The community will need to work together in the building to see that it per-forms as intended, and there is tremendous educational value in that level of engage-ment,” says Stevenson, who has been named a 2015 Liv-ing Building Challenge Hero by the International Living Future Institute, in recogni-tion of his commitment to LBC and his work to “con-tinually raise the bar on behalf of the green building industry.”

Moomaw, who was awarded a Bicentennial Medal by Williams in 2013, is chief scientist at the Earthwatch Institute and professor emeritus of in-ternational environmental policy at Tufts University,

where he served as found-ing director of the Center for International Environ-ment and Resource Policy. Moomaw taught chemistry and environmental studies at Williams from 1964 to 1990, and during that time he introduced the school’s first environmental science course and served as a di-rector of the Center for En-vironmental Studies.

A chemist turned policy scientist, Moomaw has fo-cused his work on the cli-mate, stratospheric ozone, energy, forests, water, and sustainable development. Moomaw was a lead author of five reports by the Inter-governmental Panel on Cli-mate Change (IPCC) and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, and in 2007, he was a member of the United Nations-established IPCC that shared with Al Gore a Nobel Prize for its work on climate change re-search and policy. b

Doosan has expanded the versatility of its excavators with the addition of eight main pin clamps and seven pro-link wedge lock clamps that are compatible with wedge lock attachments. The new Doosan clamp at-tachments are compatible

with the wedge lock buckets and quick couplers, and give more flexibility to operators who use the wedge lock couplers.

The new Doosan clamp attachments work with mul-tiple bucket widths ranging from 23 to 60 inches, depend-

ing on the clamp type, to help maintain the load when operating Doosan DX63-3 to DX350LC-5 excavators.

The hydraulic and pro-link wedge lock clamps have the same characteris-tics as the non-wedge style, enabling precise movement and positioning. When not in use, the clamps retract, making the attachments excellent for demolition, site preparation and land-clearing applications. b

Honeywell (NYSE:HON) announced new Miller Rig-id Rail Fall Arrest Systems to provide workers with exceptional mobility and fall protection while work-ing at heights on or above vehicles or elevated ma-chinery.

Featuring an open track design, Miller Rigid Rail Systems are engi-neered to enable easy movement while reducing the risk of injury in elevat-ed work environments on such applications as truck tarping, machinery main-tenance, rail loading and unloading, and vehicle maintenance.

Three types of Miller Rigid Rail Fall Arrest Sys-tems are available in vari-ous configurations and support centre distances — making fall protection

easily customizable and cost-effective:• The Inverted “L” Sys-

tem (single rigid rail) provides fall protection coverage for working at heights on vehicles or elevated machinery. The single foundation design is ideal where space for a foundation is limited.

• The “T” Dual Track System (dual rigid rail) delivers dual fall protec-tion coverage for work-ing side-by-side on top of vehicles or elevated machinery. The single foundation design and parallel tracks make this system ideal for railroad tracks running parallel in close proximity — or two truck loading stations.

• The “P” Series System (portable single rigid rail) is an economical

solution for applications requiring temporary protection for working at heights. The modular design enables the sys-tem to be transported by forklift to a new location in just minutes. The patented truss-

integrated rigid rail on the Inverted “L” and “T” Dual Track systems allows for a single support column/foundation — for quicker and more flexible instal-lation and reduced cost. Additional features include continuous lateral fall ar-rest protection along the full length of the system — which greatly reduces swing fall hazard. In addi-tion, the system’s reduced fall clearance require-ments, as compared to ca-ble lifeline systems, enable workers to work on appli-cations low to the ground. The systems may be self-installed — or installa-tion services are available from Honeywell Technical Service by calling 800-873-5242. b

Bolstered with big up-dates, the new 370E, 410E and 460E articulated dump truck (ADTs) are designed to keep materials moving and profits flowing. The three models are highlight-ed by an EPA Final Tier 4 (FT4)/EU Stage IV John Deere PowerTech diesel engine and a pressurized Deere-designed cab – both of which combine to boost productivity and uptime, while minimizing daily op-erating costs.

“The new E-Series ar-ticulated dump trucks are the result of our most im-portant asset, our custom-ers,” said Mark Shea, ADT product consultant, John Deere Construction & For-estry. “We worked with our customers to find out what they need in an ar-ticulated dump truck to make their jobs more safe, efficient, and productive. The E-Series is equipped with several features to ac-commodate these requests. Efficiency and productivity are boosted by standard best-in-class diff lock and powerful transmission re-tarder; while safety is para-mount through ground-lev-el daily service, auto horn, rollover protection and re-mote park-brake release.”

Designed and built in Dubuque and Davenport, Iowa, the E-Series ADTs fea-ture 422 hp (370E), 443 hp (410E) and 481 hp (460E), delivering impressive power and torque with exceptional power-to-weight ratios and fast cycles. A purpose-built ZF transmission includes eight forward gears and four reverse gears, and a high-capacity retarder to increase service brake life. In addition, the John Deere hauler axles are designed for heavy-duty applications and include on-the-fly dif-ferential locks and outboard planetaries, and each axle is independently pressure lubed and filtered. The E-Series axles use internal wet disc brakes that utilize inde-pendent cooling circuits.

Perhaps the biggest change to these new mod-els is the updated cab. The ultra-quiet, redesigned cab is sealed and pressurized to keep out dust and noise, affording enhanced opera-tor concentration and effi-ciency. Creature comforts

include push-button start, low-effort push-button controls, air-suspension heated high-back seat, tilt/telescoping steering wheel and optional premium ra-dio with Bluetooth, auxilia-ry input and satellite radio capability. Stairway lights can be turned on with the push of a button from ground level for easier vis-ibility when entering the larger cab entryway.

The E-Series models are equipped with an updated 7-inch high-resolution LCD monitor for easy access to onboard diagnostics, digital gauges and vital system in-dicators — all conveniently located within arm’s reach and view during rough haul conditions. Two er-gonomically positioned sealed switch modules sim-plify operation and conve-nience controls. The auto shutdown feature turns off the engine after an owner-determined period of inac-tivity to reduce emissions, idle time and subsequent wear on the power train.

An integrated tire-pres-sure/temperature monitor-ing system comes standard to help maximize tire life and fuel efficiency. If pres-sure drops by 10 percent, a passive alarm appears on the monitor. In addition, further pressure decreases or overheating result in an audible warning and an email alert that is sent via JDLink.

An optional, onboard weighing system is fac-tory calibrated, which al-lows contractors to view the weight and the number of loads carried via JDLink. The system displays the pay-load on the monitor during loading while transmitting real-time load and tonnage data via JDLink, so produc-tivity can be monitored from virtually anywhere. The onboard weighing option also comes equipped with mirror-mounted LED load indicator lights that illumi-nate for the loading opera-tor as the truck approaches capacity (green flashing), is at capacity (green) or is 10 percent or more over capac-ity/overload (red flashing).

A favoured customer-driven feature of the E-Series and a hallmark for John Deere is centralized, true ground-level servicing

to simplify daily mainte-nance and overall service-ability. All daily service can be completed from the ground. Hydraulically con-trolled fans with swing-out cooling packages on both sides of the engine high-light the cool-on-demand system. For dusty environ-ments, there is a reversible fan option available for

simplified cooler cleanout.Operators looking to

get the most out of their E-Series can rely on Ultimate Uptime featuring John Deere WorkSight. With Ul-timate Uptime, operators receive predelivery and fol-low-up inspections; three years of JDLink telematics, machine heath prognostics and remote diagnostics and programming capability; and the ability to add addi-tional dealer-provided up-time solutions to customize the package to individual needs. b
