Four new Link-Belt X4 excavator models are now available for the US and for Canada. These new models feature advanced, electron-ically-controlled Isuzu en-gines that meet Final Tier 4 requirements, with up to 12% improved fuel effi-ciency than previous mod-els. Diesel particulate filters (DPFs) are not required,

and this emissions solu-tion is used across all X4 models. New features in-clude a 30% bigger control valve that creates a larger hydraulic passage area, larger spools and advanced controls to maximize hy-draulic system control and responsiveness. Two elec-trically-controlled Kawa-saki variable-displacement

axial-piston pumps and one Kawasaki gear pump assure that hydraulic flow is delivered precisely when and where it’s needed. The result is more manoeu-vrability and precision across all operating modes, smoother machine opera-tion and up to 12% faster cycle times.

The X4 excavator cab

offers better operator er-gonomics and comfort. A large, automotive-grade high-back seat provides unprecedented lumbar support and reclines at a 65° angle for a relaxed environment during breaks. Arm rests move proportionally with the console, which means that the distance and angle between joysticks and operator remains the same, no matter how the seat is adjusted. With a large, 7-inch LED colour monitor to interface with the machine, an opera-tor can easily navigate a full menu of user-friendly controls to take full com-mand of the excavator and attachments. An op-erator will also feel safer in the ROPS and FOPS-certified cab, especially with the standard rear-view camera which dis-plays a panoramic view of the worksite from the rear of the machine, with sight guidelines added for increased safety. The Wide Angle View Enhancement System (WAVES) can be added to provide a full 270° viewing envelope with no blind spots. Other no-table new cab features include: dual halogen cab lights (with optional LED lighting); a cup holder and storage areas for cell phones and other small items; newly designed joysticks with easy-to-hold grip and radio mute buttons; new MP3 audio

input, Bluetooth-enabled for hands-free communi-cation. And, all Link-Belt excavators are equipped with a standard control pattern changer so every operator can feel right at home in an X4.

To maximize up-time, X4 excavators are equipped with the Re-moteCARE GPS-enabled telematics system, en-abling 24/7 remote moni-toring and security. Re-moteCARE tracks routine and major service inter-vals, as well as current machine health, provid-ing more flexibility and control when determin-ing when and where to service machines. The system also provides ma-chine location in real time for better job supervision and remote security moni-toring. Flashing diagnos-tic codes on the monitor quickly alert the operator to potential trouble. Ser-

vicing is a snap, with con-venient, ground-level ac-cess to all routine service points, including sample ports for engine and hy-draulic oil. All service ports can be accessed via hand-turn knobs, with no tools needed.

The X4 excavators are tough and durable, with improved boss shaping on boom and arm pins to reduce stress; cast boom tips for improved reliabil-ity; and stronger cylinder mounts on booms and arms. Structural improve-ments on the lowers in-clude a thicker travel motor case (up to 32% increase over previous models); thicker plating between side frame and travel mo-tor case; up to 7% larger track rollers; increased tread diameter on track rollers; longer front idler hub; and a shape change on side frames for easy cleaning. b

“I am extremely pleased with the first IronPlanet and Cat Auction Services

joint auction. The support that we received from the Caterpillar dealers as well as our other OEM, rental company, contractor, and industrial customers pro-vided the best line up of equipment in Florida this February,” said Gregory J. The auction showcased equipment from 131 sell-ers, which included 25 Cat dealers. Over 21,000 peo-ple attended the auction, onsite or online, from 132 countries.

The Volvo EC220E crawler excavator builds on the strong reputation of the previous D-Series mod-el with reduced emissions and fuel consumption, as well as enhanced power and productivity.

The 22-ton Volvo EC220E is the newest ex-cavator from Volvo Con-struction Equipment and is fitted with a top-range Tier 4 Final Volvo D6 engine that meets strict emissions legislation across North America without com-promising on power. The fully optimized hydraulics system and ECO mode de-liver the precise amount of power required to com-plete the task in hand, while the auto engine shut-down feature helps further reduce fuel consumption and emissions by switching off after the excavator has been inactive for a pre-set amount of time.

The increased pump input power on the Volvo

EC220E enables highly responsive operation for greater productivity and cycle times — and with the boom float function, the pump power normally used for boom lowering can be saved or used for other functions, also reduc-ing cycle times. The new valve controls the boom operation proportionally according to the arm op-eration while grading. This system also improves lift-ing controllability while traveling simultaneously. When grading, the opera-tor is now capable of main-taining the bucket teeth parallel to the ground even in H mode during the entire cycle. Fuel efficiency has been improved from previ-ous model by 5 percent.

“The combination of our improved fuel effi-ciency and overall machine durability gives our cus-tomers greater uptime and ultimately increased pro-ductivity throughout the

total lifetime of their equip-ment,” said Rob Palermo, product manager excava-tors, Volvo Construction Equipment.Custom comfort

A comfortable operator is a productive operator, which is why the new Vol-vo EC220E places comfort at the heart of its design. The HMI (human machine interface) — including the joysticks, keypad and easy-to-read 8-inch LCD moni-tor — are ergonomically designed and can be fine-tuned according to opera-tor preference. The number of switches has also been reduced and the climate control integrated into the keypad for effortless ad-justment. For added con-venience, functions such as the windshield wipers, cameras and auto-mute can all be assigned a short-cut button on the joystick. This allows the operator to select a function mid-job without disruption.

For the safety of both the operator and site staff, the 22-ton model from Vol-vo now also includes an optional side view camera in addition to the rear-view camera to cover the visual blind spots. Both views are displayed on the colour monitor. The cab is ROPS and ISO Standard-compli-ant, to ensure the operator is fully protected in the un-likely event of the excava-tor rolling over.Built to last

The Volvo EC220E is not just a highly produc-tive machine in the short term; rather the machine is engineered to continue working hard over a long service life. Operating in tough conditions means that every component mat-ters — Volvo pays careful attention to every detail during the product design and manufacturing pro-cesses. Silicone caulking is used to prevent rust, while waterproof harnesses and connections come as standard. The design also incorporates heavy-duty door hinges and bolt-on protection for the frame-work lights.

The X-shape lower frame enables even weight distribution for increased

stability and durability and helps prevent damage from rocks and debris. The heavy-duty undercarriage likewise creates excellent tractive force in demanding terrain. The robust design of the boom and arm in-cludes internal plates posi-tioned to support pressure points during a wide range of applications. These plates help disperse pres-sure to ensure maximum productivity and uptime from the excavator — time after time.

Volvo stands behind the quality of its excavators with standards born from decades of experience, both in the field and in the lab, and hundreds of hours of computer simulations, delivering unsurpassed frame and structure lon-gevity and durability. The

unwavering confidence in product integrity is now being passed to customers through a lifetime warran-ty on the boom, arm and frame.Easy to inspect

In order to guarantee a long service life — and maximum uptime — regu-lar service inspections are required to spot any poten-tial problems before they occur. The Volvo EC220E excavator makes daily service checks quick and easy to carry out thanks to grouped filters that are eas-ily accessible from ground level. Operators can eas-ily access the single-lay-er cooling system from ground level by simply opening the side door. The radiator charged air cooler and hydraulic oil cooler

are situated side-by-side to maximize efficiency, reduce blockages and aid cleaning. Should a techni-cian or operator need to ac-cess the superstructure for inspection or maintenance, full size guard rails help maintain three-point con-tact at all times, while well-positioned, punched and removable anti-slip plates offer good grip.

CareTrack is the Volvo Construction Equipment telematics system which gives operators access to a wide range of machine monitoring information designed to save time and money. With CareTrack, operators can reduce fuel costs, optimize machine performance and proac-tively manage service and maintenance to maximize uptime. Operators can also stay connected via remote monitoring and experience new levels of control and efficiency. Volvo’s real-time service alerts via Care-Track also help promote a good service and mainte-nance routine. Diagnostic check alerts are displayed on the colour monitor for the engine oil filter, the fuel-water separator, the hydraulic oil and the hy-

draulic oil filter.Mix-and-match attach-

mentsIn addition to the ma-

chine’s durability and ease of maintenance, the sheer versatility of the EC220E ensures maximum uptime and productivity. The ex-cavator can be adjusted to take a wide variety of hydraulic lines, which are factory fitted with breaker and shear piping (X1), as well as rotator piping (X3). These state-of-the-art auxil-iary lines provide the cor-rect flow and pressure for special attachments such as mowers and grinders, shears, crushers and tilt rotators. Additionally, a complete line of Volvo at-tachments is available, including buckets and hy-draulic hammers, which are designed to meet a full range of applications. A password-protected attach-ment management system has pre-sets and permits hydraulic flow and pres-sure to be adjusted (set or memorized) for up to 20 different attachments. The response sensitivity can be adjusted using the keypad, allowing the operator to tailor machine response for maximum impact in differ-ent environments. b

Adding to the confusion of extensive tax laws is the fact that they change, says gold financial strategist William A. Storum.

In 2013, for example, new tax laws moved the highest federal income tax rate from 35 percent to 39.6 percent. For 2014, if your taxable income topped $406,750 – or $457,600 if you’re married and file a joint return – you are in that 39.6 percent.

“Whether you’re in that percentile or not, inflation is an inevitable part of our future because the govern-ment is printing money it doesn’t have, affecting every American,” says Storum, author of “Going for the Gold” (www.goldandtax.com).

“Gold is the standard, and that’s why it’s a great investment for your portfo-lio assets – anywhere from 5 to 35 percent is a good range.”

But gold investments may be highly taxed in the future, which is why you’ll need a tax-planning strat-egy.

In trying to navigate stocks, mutual funds and various tax traps for gold, such a strategy likely re-quires a comprehensive and highly detailed plan, says Storum, who offers a few basic tips for gold coins and bars.• Trading with like-kind

exchanges: As many

real estate investors know, like-kind ex-changes mean that an owner can exchange one investment proper-ty for another and thus avoid paying tax on a sale. Like-kind exchang-es are also possible for gold investors. You can exchange bullion – coins or bars – for an-other form, and as long as equal value changes hands, no income tax will be due. Why trade? One reason may be to obtain smaller, more liquid gold items. A one-ounce gold bullion coin worth $1,400 or more may not be practical for purchases or gifts.

• Privacy protection: Un-like gold stocks, funds and other similar secu-rities investments, the purchase of gold bullion often is not reported to the IRS. No government agency is able to keep track. For the most part,

investors in gold coins and bars, and other pre-cious metals, have a great deal of privacy – if you know the rules and understand when forms must be filed. It’s impor-tant to work with a deal-er who is in compliance with reporting regula-tions. The IRS may scru-tinize dealers and their customers if their com-pliance is in question.

• Helping loved ones: Many people today are still not making what they used to, and find-ing a job right out of col-lege is still challenging for many recent grads. Instead of giving cash to your child, consider giv-ing an appreciated gold coin, which can be sold to pay the mortgage, pay property taxes, buy food, etc. In times of financial distress, your child may be in a low tax bracket – perhaps a 0 percent bracket – and thus would owe much less tax than you probably would pay if you sold the coin your-self. However, due to the so-called kiddie tax, this strategy won’t work as well with children who are fulltime students younger than 24. b

“With the sale over three days this year, there

was a great selection of low hour, quality equip-ment from Cat dealers,” said Scott Gremillion, gen-eral manager of Louisiana Cat. “IronPlanet’s online platform combined with Cat Auction Services’ live onsite set-up provided a really broad reach, which resulted in participation from a lot of bidders. We look forward to the next

In a spectacular evening ceremony at Hoover

Dam, Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) unveiled the Freightliner Inspiration Truck to several hundred international news media, trucking industry analysts, and officials.

The Freightliner Inspi-ration Truck is the first li-censed autonomous com-mercial truck to operate on an open public highway in the United States. De-veloped by engineers at DTNA, it promises to un-lock autonomous vehicle advancements that reduce

accidents, improve fuel consumption, cut highway congestion, and safeguard the environment.

“Putting the Freightliner Inspiration Truck on the road is an historic day for Daimler Trucks and the North American trucking industry,” said Dr. Wolf-gang Bernhard, Member of the Board of Manage-ment of Daimler AG Daim-ler Trucks & Buses. “Our team has done a marvelous job in bringing this break-through technology to the road.”

“Freightliner Trucks has

been setting the standard for commercial vehicle design and technology for nearly 75 years,” said Martin Daum, President & CEO, DTNA. “Whether it was the first all-aluminum cab introduced in 1942 or the current industry-lead-ing Freightliner Cascadia Evolution, we are inspired by meeting the challenges faced by our customers. In-spiration drives technology leadership and, ultimately, customer value. Our cus-tomers are our inspira-tion.”

The Hoover Dam was

selected for the unveil-ing because it represents America’s ability to dream big and accomplish amaz-ing things, even in the midst of adversity. Built during the Great Depres-sion under harsh condi-tions, it took fewer than five years to complete. The largest dam of its time, the Hoover Dam still stands as an engineering marvel eight decades later. The Inspiration Truck drove on top of the dam, presenting itself to the world, while the dam was used as an emotional large-scale pro-jection surface.

The Freightliner Inspi-ration Truck illustrates DTNA’s commitment to customer value through consistent investment in the latest technology and the design and production of the best commercial trucks on today’s roads. Some of the core autono-mous vehicle systems in the concept vehicle are already successfully deployed in the current Freightliner Cascadia Evolution.

The Freightliner Inspi-ration Truck underwent extensive testing before the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles granted it a

license to operate on public roads in the state. Earlier on Tuesday, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval formally granted the license to oper-ate the vehicle in the state, affixing a license plate to the truck and taking part in the ceremonial first drive of the truck in autonomous mode.

The Freightliner Inspira-tion Truck is equipped with the Highway Pilot sensors and computer hardware is based upon a series pro-duction Freightliner Cas-cadia Evolution, fully certi-fied to meet all U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Stan-dards. The Highway Pilot links together a sophisti-cated set of camera tech-nology and radar systems with lane stability, colli-sion avoidance, speed con-trol, braking, steering and other monitoring systems. This combination creates a Level 3 autonomous ve-hicle operating system that can perform safely under a range of highway driving conditions. In total, two trucks with this equipment exist.

Trucking industry ana-lysts and international me-dia will be given the chance to ride in the two trucks on public roads near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Wednesday as the vehicle operates in autonomous mode.

“Freightliner Trucks does more than any other commercial truck manu-facturer to integrate the truck, the driver and the business. The Freightliner Inspiration Truck is a case in point because it is not a driverless truck — the driver is a key part of a col-laborative vehicle system,” said Richard Howard, Se-nior Vice President, Sales & Marketing, DTNA. “With the Freightliner Inspiration Truck, drivers can opti-mize their time on the road while also handling other important logistical tasks, from scheduling to routing. The autonomous vehicle technology not only con-tributes to improved safety and efficiency, but allows for improved communica-

tion through connectivity and integration.”

The Freightliner In-spiration Truck operates on highways at what the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration de-fines as Level 3 of autono-mous vehicle capabilities, enabling the driver to cede full control of all safety-critical functions under certain traffic or environ-mental conditions. The au-tonomous vehicle system is responsible for maintaining legal speed, staying in the selected lane, keeping a safe braking distance from other vehicles, and slow-ing or stopping the vehicle based on traffic and road conditions. The vehicle monitors changes in con-ditions that require transi-tion back to driver control when necessary in high-way settings. The driver is in control of the vehicle for exiting the highway, on local roads and in docking for making deliveries.

“Freightliner is the rec-ognized leader in develop-ing trucks that improve Real Cost of Ownership for our customers. The Cas-cadia Evolution redefined what was expected in terms of fuel efficiency, connec-tivity, safety, quality and uptime. And the Freight-liner SuperTruck, unveiled at the recent Mid-America Trucking Show, shattered the goal set by the U.S. Department of Energy for heavy-duty Class 8 trucks by achieving an incredible 115 percent ton-miles per gallon freight efficiency improvement,” said Diane Hames, General Manager, Sales & Marketing, DTNA. “And now, the Freightliner Inspiration Truck is yet an-other prime example of the infinite inspiration from the research and design team at DTNA when it comes to advancing our state-of-the-art commercial truck tech-nology. We want to always have the best truck on the road, so we will never stop investing in our customers through the product we put on the road.”

the best minds at Daimler Trucks — the worldwide technological leader in the commercial vehicle busi-ness — the unveiling of the Freightliner Inspiration Truck showcases the pos-sibilities of autonomous vehicles and advances an important discussion about the future of logistics and distribution across North America.

Record-breaking World Premiere of Freightliner Inspiration Truck on Hoover Dam

Almost 80 years after its official opening, the fa-mous Hoover Dam was the setting for the World Premiere of the Freightliner Inspiration Truck. Doing double duty holding back trillion gallons of water and generating electricity for Las Vegas and Califor-nia, the dam served as the largest projection screen ever in North America. This projection — at 1.17 million lumens — earned Freightliner the Guinness World Record of highest light output projection ever and, with the Freightliner Inspiration Truck, Daimler introduced the world’s first autonomous truck licensed

to drive on public roads at the historic concrete arch-gravity dam in southeast-ern Nevada.

“The Hoover Dam pro-vides the ideal setting for a debut as significant to the trucking industry as this. Not only was it built primarily using trucks, but it signifies inspiration like few other structures in the world. To show the significance and opportu-nities of autonomous driv-ing functions for the glob-al trucking industry we were willing to go ways that people did not dare to think about before,” emphasized Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, Daimler Trucks and Buses. “The Inspiration Truck’s debut was made even more no-table with Freightliner’s Guinness World Record of the highest light output projection ever.”

To give this historic event a fitting, monumen-tal backdrop, 60 projectors at 26,000 watts each pro-jected the 30-minute pre-sentation that introduced the Inspiration Truck. In a spectacular finish of the re-veal, the truck drove onto the Hoover Dam in the des-

ert of Nevada. This unique video screening was pro-jected onto a surface of a little over 420,000 square feet. This is equal to almost nine football fields and over 87 average-size IMAX screens.

To achieve this, the 60

projectors were synchro-nized to create an image with a resolution of 4592 x 2048 pixels on the dam a half-mile away. In addition to the complexity of the projector setup, the output of the projectors was im-pressive in itself. Together

the 60 units generated about 1.17 million lumens, which is equivalent to the output of more than 1,400 60-watt household light bulbs and an official world record among projections.

Using the Hoover Dam as North America’s largest

projection screen was an enormous undertaking, requiring months of plan-ning, preparation and set-up. The technology used at the Hoover Dam has never been applied before on a scale this massive,
