Create patron records

Entering materials into Surpass CL is easy. Beginners use ‘simple view’ and just fill in the blanks with author, title, call number, and other bibliographic information. Experts can use MARC view.

If your computer is connected to the Internet, Surpass CL Quick Cataloging makes the process even easier. Simply scan or enter an ISBN, and Quick Cataloging finds book records on the Internet.

Volunteers easily learn how to catalog materials even if they’ve had little library experience.

After items are cataloged, sort or print items in any order. Create catalog cards and reports. Easily add multiple copies of items.

Patron management is simple with Surpass. Fill in the blanks, and you’re ready to go with as little as just a name and number.

Instantly assign different check-out rules to different types of patrons, such as members and visitors. Surpass CL includes several pre-set patron types especially for churches.

Add patron photos from a digital camera or church photography CD. Photos help you learn patrons and can be used on library cards.

Member information can be transferred from church management systems.

Patron records also store circulation history, which can be printed upon request. This is helpful for patrons reading a fiction series or researching a topic.

A familiar browser-like interface makes searching for materials easy to learn. Even if you plan to maintain card drawers, with Surpass CL you may wish to purchase the Safari catalog to assist the librarian at the main circulation computer.

When searching for materials, patrons search by author, title, subject, keyword, or Visual Navigator, a graphics-based search tool.

Results of a search are listed in a clear, easy-to-read format. If you purchase a Safari Selections subscription, book jackets and other special information will be included when available.

The My Book Bag feature allows patrons to build and print a custom bibliography of materials. Visual Navigator is much like browsing the shelves. VN’s icon-based searching includes over 200 beautiful graphics that appeal to all ages. VN is a standard feature and arrives pre-set with several topics common in church libraries, such as devotionals and commentaries.

To further automate your library, choose the optional Surpass CL Safari patron catalog. With Safari, your church members can search your collection on a computer station in the library. Patrons can search for specific subjects, titles, or authors, or browse groups of related titles.

A multi-user license allows Safari to run on any computer on your network. Church staff can browse the catalog right from their offices.

To offer your catalog over the Internet, choose Surpass Hosting Service. Surpass Hosting Service makes your collection available to members 24 hours a day. Members can search from anywhere and create a bibliography of materials and reserve items to pick up when the library is open.

Safari is an information gateway to your library. In addition to providing the catalog, Safari presents library news and bulletins and a library calendar. Safari also provides quick links to new materials, popular titles, and recommendations.

Recommendations are created in your library and can include booklists from the pastor, bibliographies of study materials gathered by group leaders, holiday-themed materials you select, and more.

A fun and useful way to connect members with the library is through book reviews. Members and staff can be invited to submit reviews of materials they have used. The review appears with the book information whenever anyone views the record.
