alivefireIn all that has gone into its realized

vision as the state’s premier athletic

competition, the Utah Summer Games

embody the marks of championship.

Aptly, after 25 years, this summer’s

silver anniversary season drew more

competing athletes than ever before.

Of course, the makings of cham-

pionship—the passion, teamwork

and sacrifice—have been in place

since the Games’ 1982 inception

when, in efforts to increase stu-

dent enrollment, Southern Utah

State College President Gerald R.

Sherratt (’51) drew inspiration from

the nation’s building excitement over

the upcoming Summer Olympics in

Los Angeles. Seeking to bring greater

numbers of potential students and

their families to the SUSC cam-

pus, Sherratt dreamt that the school

and city could host a mini-Summer

Olympics, and set to work securing

funding for a new special events

center (The Centrum) and expan-

sion to the SUSC football stadium

that would accommodate Sherratt’s

anticipated crowds.

Thanks to the contributions of

both labor and money by committed

members of the local community,

Sherratt’s dream became a reality,

and the Games’ first director, Vaughn

McDonald, along with countless

volunteers, welcomed nearly 500

athletes—mostly from Cedar City

and its surrounding areas—in the

inaugural athletics competition.

In addition to its economic

implications, Sherratt viewed the

Games as an opportunity to serve

participants and fans of so-called

minor sports, with few opportunities

to compete for broad recognition. And

under the direction of the Games’

first full-time director, Rich Wilson

(’67), athletes began streaming in to

experience the thrill of competition

in an exciting and unusually large

venue. By the end of its first decade,

The Utah Summer Games drew an

annual attendance in the thousands

and was recognized as one of the

region’s biggest tourism draws.

It was a humble but passionate

beginning that did little to intimate

all that would come of Sherratt’s

creative marketing venture.

Now, more than 10,000 athletes

compete annually in what has

become the state’s largest athletic

competition. In pursuit of gold medal

championships, these athletes range

in age from four to 90 years old and

from amateur weekend warriors to

semi-professional seasoned athletes

who gather from across Utah and

neighboring states to join in the field

of competition across 50 different

sports.

At least half of the Games’ annual

contests can be classified as “minor

sports,” though current USG Director

Casey McClellan (’99) sees them as

paramount to the Games’ ongoing

success.

“The fans and participants have

the same passion for their events

as those of larger sports, though

they seldom have the opportunity

to compete in a way that garners

statewide recognition,” he says.

“They are an equal part of the

Utah Summer Games and their

participation heightens the overall

understanding of their sport.”

As to Sherratt’s initial plan to use

the Games as a college recruitment

tool: year after year, a considerable

group of incoming T-Bird students

attribute their first SUU introduction

to the Utah Summer Games.

Growth, vision, toil, sacrifice,

teamwork and passion—all fuel to

the fire that continues to drive the

Utah Summer Games forward.

Southern Utah University was named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the high-est federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. As a first time honor roll recipient, the University logged nearly 42,000 hours of student service.

P H O T O J O U R N A LA look at news headlines and highlights from the past six months on the campus of Southern Utah University

Born to Ride: Cody Wright and the Quest for a World Title, produced by Southern Utah University, won the “Outstanding Documentary, Contemporary” award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, a prestigious Western Heritage Award. The film documents the trail to glory of 2008 National Saddle Bronc Champion Cody Wright.

SUU Gymnastics won its 11th NCAA Academic National Championship (3.89 overall team GPA). The team also reigns as 2010 Western Athletic Conference Champions.

Long-time Utah Shakespearean Festival actors and directors have been named as joint artistic directors at the Tony Award-winning theatre company. Brian Vaughn (’10, right) comes to Cedar City from the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre where he was a resident actor, and David Ivers (left) comes to the Festival after nine seasons as resident artist with the Denver Center Theatre Company.

Showcasing the commitment and interest so many hold in our students’ success, 86 percent of all SUU faculty and staff contributed back to the University, lending financial support to student scholarships and programming, in the 2010 Employee Giving Campaign.

SUU Theta Sigma sisters earned the international Order of the Lamp award in recognition of standout excellence among the sorority’s 149 active chapters worldwide at the 68th Biennial Convention of the Alpha Phi International Fraternity.

The Many Faces of Science at Southern Utah UniversityFrom its original home in the Braithwaite Liberal Arts building (below) to its current home in the Science Building (top left), SUU’s college of Science has been shuffled across campus to accommodate its burgeoning enrollment. Filling the footprint of the recently condemned Life Science Building, the new Science center will provide the classroom, lab and meeting space necessary to carry science into the future.

ScIENcECHAMPIONS

One of the first things Dean of

Science Robert Eves (’84) does each

morning is to walk out on the deck of

the SUU Science Building and survey

the construction of his $18 million

addition.

Eves, a friendly geochemist with

an ever-ready smile, looks upon the

teeming, daily progress of contractors

with excitement, satisfaction and

wonderment. The addition’s opening,

slated for May 2011, will mark what

he terms “a huge step forward” in his

College’s mission to prepare students

for graduate and professional schools

and for careers in the sciences.

Indeed, the new, 42,385-square-

foot facility, in the space formerly

occupied by the Life Science

Building, will provide the College

with its greatest need: state-of-

the-art laboratory space crucial to

the highly-prized undergraduate

research and experiential learning

model.

Eves recognizes, however, that

the new space is providential; that it

is a gift provided by the dedication

of many, including “Modern

Day Founders,” who share his

commitment to providing students

with the best opportunity to succeed.

He embraces the truism that such

success will aid innumerable others

in the ever-expanding ripple effect

that education engenders.

That was a precept also well-

understood by Walter M. Gibson

(’51), who, along with his wife Alice,

directed that a substantial gift be

bestowed on the project so that the

vision of first-rate resources might be

manifest. That gift was the impetus

needed to persuade the Utah State

Legislature that the building was

a vital need. As President Michael

T. Benson provided a reasoned

rationale for the construction, State

Sen. Dennis Stowell and Rep. Evan

Vickers performed lionhearted

service in helping to push the

appropriation through.

“The Gibson gift truly got the ball

rolling,” says Eves.

Gibson, who passed away May

15, received his Ph.D. in nuclear

chemistry from the University of

California, Berkeley, in 1956 under

Nobel Laureate Glen Seaborg. He then

spent nearly 20 years at Bell Labs,

where he performed groundbreaking

research in semiconductor detectors,

radiation effects and ion channeling,

which led to the success of the

Telstar satellite. He went on to a

stellar career as an educator at SUNY

Albany, before becoming the full-

time chief technical officer of X-ray

Optical Systems, Inc., which he had

co-founded in 1990.

Beyond Gibson’s gift and the $13.85

million appropriation from the state,

however, some $2 million more was

needed —and quickly. Channeling the

spirit of SUU’s Founders who stepped

in as champions in the 11th hour,

Rich (’67) and Linda (’92) Wilson

and David (’85) and Stephanie (’89)

Nakken agreed to chair a drive to

collect the necessary funds. Singled

out for their embodiment of the

founders’ vision along with the

Wilsons and Nakkens, were Garth

and Jerri Frehner, Dixie (’51) and

Anne (’82) Leavitt, Joe and Beverly

Burgess, Don (’59) and Sylvia

Bulloch, Greg (’91) and Debbie (’91)

Forsyth, Robert (’46) and the late

Onda (’46) Bradshaw, Gail (’51)

and Jane (’89) Bradshaw, and Cline

and Jane Dahle—all champions of

science at Southern Utah University.

Today, the campaign for the new

addition is just short of the total

required to complete the project.

Meanwhile, construction contin-

ues on the four-level edifice which

will include eight labs, three class-

rooms, an animal care facility, 24

offices and a rooftop greenhouse

as part of a “green roof,” which

will deliver high solar reflectance to

reduce heat transfer to the building

and high thermal emittance to radi-

ate absorbed solar energy.

The building will also include

two spaces specifically dedicated to

undergraduate research.

Garth Frehner (’56), namesake

of the forthcoming Frehner Natu-

ral History Museum at Southern

Utah University, spent more than 40

years building roads and bridges.

Now in retirement, Frehner’s work

is more figurative, helping construct

thoroughfares for SUU’s science

students.

The founder of Nevada’s Frehner

construction and his wife Jerri

have been named Modern Day SUU

Founders by President Michael T.

Benson, and since their retirement

to New Harmony in 2004, become

fast friends of the University.

Most recently, they are proud to

see grandson Kyle Davis, the

Utah 5A basketball MVP of 2010

state champion Alta High School,

become a Thunderbird for coach

Roger Reid this 2010 season—and

already have their eyes on seats in

the centrum Arena.

However, Garth’s relationship

with the University is not a new one,

by any means. In 1954 he graduat-

ed from Moapa Valley High School

and enrolled at what was then the

newly-renamed college of Southern

Utah.

“I wasn’t sure what I wanted to

do, so I tried a little bit of every-

thing,” he says. He began in animal

husbandry under VR Magleby but

he’d pretty much had his fill of farm

life, he says, and tried auto me-

chanics, then pre-dentistry, before

settling on engineering which was,

he says, “the closest thing to what I

ended up doing.”

Along the way at cSU, he ear-

nestly and enthusiastically partici-

pated in chorus under the direction

of the legendary Roy L. Halversen,

and fondly remembers such south-

ern Utah pillars as Theron Ashcroft

and Royden Braithwaite as essen-

tial to his learning experience.

Following his time at cSU, Garth

drove a truck for a few years, then,

perhaps drawing on what he’d

learned of business as a cSU stu-

dent, opted to build his own trucking

company and, subsequently, his

own construction and aggregate

business along with brothers Wes

and Vern. The company became

one of the largest in the intermoun-

tain area and, he says, at one time

did more work than all other con-

tractors in the state of Nevada

combined, along with work in Utah

and california.

10I N V I E W

“It’s particularly important to

provide this engagement for students.

It is essential in today’s world,” says

Eves of the research features.

Also, the facility will feature the

1,193-square foot Frehner Natural

History Museum, showcase for the

University’s expanding collection of

artifacts.

Its location will be the first built

expressly for the Museum, which

first opened in June 1963 in the old

Commons Building and remained

there until 1985 when the building

was razed and the collection moved

to the old South Hall. In 2002 the old

South Hall building was torn down

to be replaced by the existing South

Hall, and the museum exhibits were

eventually transferred to a room in

the Life Science building. Today,

safely tucked away in the basement

of the Electronic Learning Center,

they await their new home which

will serve as an inviting entrance to

the new SUU Science Building.

BUILDINGA Road of Tradition For Thunderbird Students

Page 13: SUU In View - Fall 2010

As busy as he became, though,

Garth always made time for his hob-

by of hunting, which he took up in

the early 1940s.

To say that Garth and Jerri hunt

is akin to saying that LeBron James

plays basketball. Evidence of their

shared hunting prowess and ven-

turous traveling spirit is abundant at

their home as more than five dozen

trophies are artfully displayed (so

artfully, that the Frehners regularly

host home tours of their lions and

tigers and bears…and any number

of large and small game, from musk

oxen to raccoons and elephants to

foxes). With an eye on education,

the Frehners often host elementary

school children in tours of what they

call a home, but what might well

be called a museum, and enjoy the

beautifully manicured grounds of

the Frehner home.

The impressiveness of their

grounds extends to the Frehners’

yard—evidence of Jerri’s favorite

local hobby: gardening. She and

Garth also are avid tennis play-

ers and usually find the time for

a doubles match, and Jerri has

taken up painting with watercol-

ors over the past four years and

attends many workshops.

Garth and Jerri have traveled

extensively, with some 90 percent of

the trips devoted to hunting. They’ve

been to such far-flung spots as

Mongolia, Spain, Alaska, the Arc-

tic, Mexico, seven countries on the

African continent, Japan, Sweden,

all of western Europe, New Zea-

land, china, Korea, Hawaii, six ca-

nadian provinces, Russia, Kyrgyz-

stan, Tajikistan, Fiji, Norway and

the Virgin Islands.

Though well-traveled, the couple

has gained a deep appreciation for

southern Utah and looks forward to

coming home at each trip’s end and

to visiting with their 10 children, 34

grandchildren and two great grand-

children.

With a newly rekindled relation-

ship with SUU and ardent interest

in the progress of the Science cen-

ter project, and with number-one-

fan-status to earn with their T-Bird

grandson, the Frehners are again

pulled back to southern Utah after

exotic adventures.

The University welcomes them

with open arms and applauds their

generosity in sharing their treasures

with the southern Utah community.

Southern Utah Museum Of Art: a new corner on the artsSouthern Utah University, aided

by a generous gift from the late

celebrated artist Jim Jones, has

embarked on a transforming project

for the University and region.

The Southern Utah Museum of

Art has not been named in a cava-

lier fashion. The 28,000-square foot

facility is intended to be the art

museum of Southern Utah. SUMA,

which will be built entirely with

donated funds, will become a major

year-round regional cultural attrac-

tion and educational hub.

And though museums seem to be

about objects, an art museum’s abil-

ity to engage visitors in the explora-

tion of the deeper meanings of its

exhibits is the ultimate test of its

social value—and is the foundation

of SUMA, which includes uniquely

designed interior glass walls that

will allow visitors a behind-the-

scenes museum experience with

unrestricted views of artists and art

technicians at work.

Education is central to SUMA’s

purpose of exhibiting, collecting and

preserving historic and contempo-

rary works of art significant to the

American West. The museum will

be nationally accredited, “provid-

ing students with an unparalleled

opportunity to put theory to work,

hands-on, in gallery and museum

management,” says Museum Director

and Curator Reece Summers.

The museum, significantly larger

than SUU’s Braithwaite Fine Arts

Gallery, will host exhibitions from

around the world and house the

University’s permanent collection.

SUMA will also design, curate and

produce exhibits that will tour the

world, creating good will and recog-

nition for SUU.

As southern Utah’s

art museum, citizens

have the opportunity to

contribute personal art

collections to the facil-

ity for the enjoyment of

all. Recent gifts to the

museum include four

of Jim Jones’ very early

paintings from Rita

Fordham of Salt Lake

City; two paintings and

a ceramics collection

from Sharon C. Leigh (’57) of Cedar

City; and two of Jones’ paintings from

the State Bank of Southern Utah.

Of this experience, State Bank

CFO John R. Westwood (’77) said,

“State Bank is honored to help SUMA

with these contributions.”

Such is the sentiment of many who

stand behind SUMA’s completion.

In addition to the cultural tourism

market, SUMA will serve a regional

market. Each year, students across

five counties will have their arts

education enhanced with in-school

presentations and a SUMA visit.

Members of the community with an

enthusiasm for art may also partici-

pate in a volunteer program.

Planned for the

northwest corner of

University Blvd. and

300 West, across

the street from the

Utah Shakespearean

Festival, SUMA holds

much promise and

will mark a stunning

entrance to cam-

pus—a true “corner

on the arts” in south-

ern Utah.

museum of art, please contact donna

law at 435-865-8182 or reece summers

SUU annually recognizes alumni who have distinguished themselves through their careers, community service and commitment to SUU. Please join us at the Alumni Brunch this Homecoming weekend to congratulate this year’s recipients.

H O M E C O M I N G H O N O R SOUTSTANDING ALUMNUS AWARD

Since earning an accounting degree from SUSC in 1972, Larry Ellertson has fashioned an enviable career in business as well as public service. A quarter-century of work with Utah Power and Light culminated in his tenure as general business manager before his 2001 retirement. He also served as Mayor of Lindon City from 1996 to 2005, when he was elected to the Utah County Commission which he now chairs. Alongside a lifetime of professional success, Larry has also worked with many community organizations and received the Utah Lt. Governor’s Civic Volunteer of the Year Award in 2000. Larry and his wife Linda Christiansen (‘70) are the parents of five children and nine grandchildren.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

As student body president, member of the school relations staff and director of the Governor’s Honors Academy, Julie Stuart (now Castle) was an influential member of the SUU community; she continues to make a difference. Following her magna cum laude graduation in political science and history, Julie worked in the former Soviet Union for nearly a year, setting up a student exchange program before embarking on a career in marketing. She is currently director of community programs and services at the Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, UT, and has helped build model animal lifesaving programs. Julie and her husband, Gregory, run marathons and hike. She also enjoys restoring historic homes and gardening.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

A lifelong friend of SUU, David Nakken earned his business administration degree while working at the local family business, Parkway Motors, where he now serves as owner and general manager. David’s company supports SUU Athletics and the Utah Summer Games and, along with his wife Stephanie (’89), also personally contributes to the advancement of the University as members of the Old Main Society. The couple has five children and one grandchild, and together they all enjoy athletics and family trips to Lake Powell. David also stays busy with service to his church as stake president of the married student wards at SUU for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also recently served as co-chair of the successful fundraising drive for the addition to the SUU Science Center.

YOUNG ALUMNUS

Justin Harding embodies the success of SUU’s political science internship program. While working on a B.S. in political science, Justin served as a 1999 Capitol Hill intern to former Congressman James V. Hansen and was later hired as Hansen’s full-time legislative assistant. He then worked for Congressman Rob Bishop, and now serves as chief of staff to Congressman Jason Chaffetz. Over the years, Justin has worked on behalf of Utahns on natural resource, energy, agriculture and transportation issues. His work ethic and love for all things Utah have served the state well. He and his wife, Bridget, live in northern Virginia with their three (almost four) children, where they are active in civic, community and religious affairs.

Coming Home

Coming in with the readers’ choice award, more than 63 percent of you who voted gave Cedar City’s sherbet-colored sunsets a nod. A sunset’s intense red and orange hues are often caused by the scattering of sunlight over dust particles. Considering the dust that flies each day from our open fields, undeveloped surroundings and stirring winds, it’s little wonder Cedar’s evening skies remain a daily spectacle.

Ten Great Reasons to visit Cedar City this Fall

The football game and a smooch at midnight is just the beginning when it comes to nostalgia this Fall 2010 Homecoming weekend. To entice our T-Bird true to return to the campus you once called home, we fielded responses from hundreds of SUU students, employees, alumni and community members to compile a highlight list of the region’s best. It certainly wasn’t easy compiling all-things-Cedar City into one neat package. And we invite you to come back this fall to assess the front-runners; then drop us a line to share what you most enjoyed and what you’d substitute with your own sentimental faves. For now, in no particular order, the following Cedar City gems come highly recommended by, well, all of you.

PAROWAN GAPOne of southern Utah’s most distinct natural wonders, the Parowan Gap is a natural mountain pass covered in Native American etchings that have been preserved for centuries. The Paiute Indian Tribe considered the gap “God’s Own House,” and recent research reveals its importance to early Native American tribes. The annual solar and lunar events which shine through the gap create a natural calendric structuring of the year’s times and seasons which have been referenced in many petroglyph inscriptions (example below) on the Parown Gap’s smooth boulder walls.

AUTUMN MOUNTAINSAutumn in Cedar City is quite literally golden, thanks to the native aspen trees scattered across mountaintops and valleys. In fact, the NBC Today Show rated Cedar City as one of the “Eight Great & Unusual Fall Foliage Destinations”. Travel Editor Peter Greenberg called Cedar City “the sleeper” in the rankings, heralding endless miles of easily accessible trails to wander through the striking natural foliage.

An old-time gathering spot for Cedar City locals in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the original Bulloch Drug soda fountain was the hallmark of the store’s popular café (reserving the upstairs of the original Main Street building for social events such as dances and luncheons). When the Vickers family purchased Bulloch Drug in 1996, they set to work restoring the building’s original charms, adding a 1942 Bastian Blessing Soda Fountain from Chicago. The fountain has quickly reestablished its place as town gathering spot, offering something for every sweet tooth.

BURGERS & RODSNearly a decade ago, local automobile enthusiasts began gathering every Monday night for “hamburgers and hot rods” at the appropriately-themed Hermies Drive In. Word has spread, and the group regularly welcomes hot rod enthusiasts from across the region all interested in a little automobile eye candy. On any given Monday night, hot rod owners circle anywhere from 10-20 classic cars for a little shop talk, great food and new friendships.

True T-Bird – Renew vows, so to speak, with your college (or lifelong) sweetheart by kissing beside the Old Sorrel statue on the eve of Homecoming.

Tailgates – Nothing says autumn like a football tailgate with old friends, especially on Homecoming weekend.

Reunions – Known for the personal education we provide to every one of our students, Many Thunderbirds have become lifelong friends as they’ve studied and played together. Relive the dream as you catch up with classmates back on campus.

Back on campus, the changing leaves and cooler climate serve as backdrop to T-Bird tradition at its best:

The classical Shakespearean and contemporary performances are just the beginning of all that comprises the southern Utah Shakespearean Experience. A mainstay on SUU’s campus since 1962, the Festival produces six summer and three fall plays every year. With the addition of backstage tours, audience seminars and the free nightly Greenshow (as well as tasty fares peddled by very convincing Old English Brits), it is safe to say that the Utah Shakespearean Festival comes by its “Best Regional Theatre” Tony Award honestly. Come see for yourself.

SHAKESPEARE

BREAD ON A STICKNeed we say more? You haven’t experienced Cedar City until you’ve eaten a Pizza Factory breadstick fresh from the oven and brushed with butter. A word to the wise: the pizza is just as tasty, so be careful not to fill up on appetizers.

SHEEP ON PARADEMany T-Birds listed the traffic (or lack thereof) as one of their favorite things about Cedar City. Though you’ll rarely stop at more than one or two stoplights while driving through town, there is one day when Main Street reaches peak traffic. The Livestock & Heritage Festival celebrates the annual herding of livestock off the mountain with a parade of more than 1,000 sheep through the middle of town. Throw in antique tractors, bagpipe bands and stock dogs, and you’ve got one of the most unique parades in the nation right here in Cedar City.

THE “C” OVERLOOKWith the entire valley at your feet, the overlook from Cedar Mountain puts the “C” in Cedar City, offering hikers, bikers and the casual drive-in viewer a bird’s eye view of campus, Main Street and even Quichipa Lake west of town.

24I N V I E W

CANYON PARK TRAILThere’s no better place to bump into Cedar City locals and old college friends than on the Cedar Canyon Walking Trail. Winding through town, across Coal Creek and into the mountains above one of the city’s oldest parks, the trail is the perfect backdrop for an evening stroll—and the perfect showcase of the natural beauty surrounding our quiet college town.

Judging by the recent success of

SUU songsmith, Associate Chair

and Director of Theatre Peter Sham,

acclaimed British lyricist John

Lennon was not far off the mark

when he penned “All you need is

love”—though a lot of hard work and

a keen sense of cadence and rhyme

may have bridged a few gaps in the

journey from Cedar City to London’s

West End where Sham’s hit Lend Me

a Tenor: The Musical will debut this

winter.

For reference, London’s West End

is akin to New York City’s Broadway.

And after months of cross continen-

tal meetings and rewrites, Sham is

on the last leg of a five-year expedi-

tion that started on the night shift

in his son’s nursery as a newborn

Orlando Sham screened a rudimen-

tary rehearsal of his father’s now

acclaimed lyrics in lullaby.

Says Sham, “When I wrote Tenor,

I was dripping with love for my new

family; I was experiencing something

at the very center of humanity.”

Fitting beginnings for a musi-

cal that has been hailed as heart-

warming, uproarious and, yes,

family friendly.

Weeks into his sabbatical abroad,

Sham looks forward to the work

ahead and to sharing his experience

with those he loves: his family, his

colleagues and his students.

Of the latter, Sham explains, “I

take my students with me. I think of

them all the time and try to figure

out how to get them out there.”

After returning to campus Sham

plans to use his London experience

to expose students to some of the

industry’s best by bringing stage

colleagues to SUU as visiting artists.

Additionally, he hopes to include

students in internship

roles in preparation

for Tenor’s New York

City Broadway debut

slated for 2012. For an

aspiring actor, such is

the stuff of dreams.

And that is Sham’s

ultimate ambition.

The lights of Broadway are bright

but for Sham, nothing is quite as

rewarding as helping others along on

the journey.

For all he has to give, Sham is cer-

tain his has been the larger benefit.

“Teaching forces me to live the stuff I

spout every day to all of [my students].”

Not yet jaded in a cutthroat indus-

try, Sham says the same values he

works to instill in his students are

to credit for his own success: hard

work, passion and humor.

“Especially humor,” he adds, find-

ing it ironic that after 12 years

in NYC, his path to

the Great White Way

will come through

Cedar City, Utah.

Not one to prema-

turely celebrate vic-

tory, Sham remains

“anxious but hope-

ful” about his cur-

rent success.

“When I’m in the audience with

my friends and family. When we’re

all laughing, and my work is the thing

that has brought us all together, that’s

when I’ll really feel like I did good.”

Sham takes musical hit “Tenor” to London’s West End

“Our students will see people – work

with people – that no other Utah school can touch. Their

training will be off the charts.”

The T-Bird mantle will take on additional meaning

to future SUU graduates, thanks to SUU Provost

Brad Cook’s new academic roadmap. At its core, the

academic roadmap aims to raise student achievement

by drawing upon the backbone of an SUU education:

experience-based learning, a supportive academic

environment and strong community partnerships.

In short, SUU students will be getting everything they

have been getting for years, only amplified.

Add to that: programming to help students integrate

coursework and extracurricular activities in the pursuit

of a well-rounded perspective, and Thunderbird students

will emerge better prepared for the shifting dynamics of

modern-day professionalism.

Under this model, SUU graduates will attain a wealth

of discipline-specific understanding, while simultaneously

developing a breadth of cultural and professional exposure

that roots knowledge in a global awareness. As symbolism

goes, this educational model is the perfect fit for the T-Bird

campus, with a T-shaped student as the ultimate goal.

Cook calls it a “broad-based education”; the academic

community simply calls it good business, considering that

every year, more than 30 million Americans are working

in jobs that did not exist in the previous quarter, according

to the U.S. Department of Labor.

A key component to future professional success is to help

students practically apply their studies across a variety of

fields. To this end, every undergraduate degree at SUU will

include experiential education requirements that afford

hands-on learning and professional exposure. Choosing

among civic, global, leadership, outdoor or creative

engagement, students will gain real-world experience

in their chosen academic field through undergraduate

research, academic service learning and internships, all

designed to develop the creative problem solving and

leadership skills many employers have reported as missing

in entry-level professionals.

With plans to expand the programming and alliances to

best position students for long-term success, some of the

roadmap’s highlights include:

• Required experiential education

• Increased interdisciplinary programming

• Expanded international partnerships

• Improved first-year and ongoing student support services

• Heightened academic standards

• Improved career and post-graduate counseling

Of SUU’s future, President Michael T. Benson has

said, “We cannot afford to be average, nor can we be all

things to all people. But those things that we choose to

do, we will do exceptionally well.” With that charge, the

SUU experience will be refined as something uniquely

valuable in the region—the state’s best kept secret in

higher education and the student’s best bet for long-term

professional success.

How did the two of you meet?Nicole: We met during spring

quarter 1996 in Professor Julie Simon’s

Expository Writing class. We were

both dating others at the time, but

our first impressions must have stuck;

we rekindled our acquaintance the

following August.

Rob: I asked Nicole to marry me in

the same classroom where we met and

we married June 9, 1997.

Where is your favorite vacation spot as a couple?

Hawaii and the Caribbean.

What are your interests and hobbies?

Rob: mountain biking, running,

coaching soccer, reading and spending

time with my family.

Nicole: book club, biking and

graphic design.

How do you keep your Thunderbird pride alive?

We love to stop in Cedar City with

our kids and show them where we

went to school, the apartments we

lived in and the things we did in

college.

KYLE TURNER’97, psychology, assistant athletic trainer, Kansas City Royals Baseball

ROB & NICOLE REYNARDRob: ’99, political science, founding partner/ attorney, Pia Anderson Dorius Reynard & Moss, PLLC, Salt Lake City, UtahNicole ‘99, commu-nication, homemaker and owner of Cedar Roots - Simply Pic-tures, Inc.

What accomplishments make you most proud?

On the personal level, having a family.

It is always great to have success, but

without loved ones to share it with, it can

be meaningless. On a professional level,

I always dreamt I’d make it to the major

leagues. I first thought I could do it as

a player but in due time, I successfully

refocused my goals to do it as an athletic

trainer.

How do you impact your community?

I have started an outreach medical

team to provide assistance to poverty

stricken communities in the Dominican

Republic. Our team of physicians and

medical students go over once a year to

provide basic health care screens and

treatment.

How did SUU impact your success?Dr. Stephen Lunt was one of my

first professors and taught me a lot

about professionalism and hard work. He

taught me that nothing worthwhile in life

is easy nor without tribulation, but that

in the end, it is always worth fighting for.

The friends I

associate with

every day are the

people I met at

SUU.

Where are you now?I live in Salt Lake City with my

husband, Randall W. Allred. We

have four great children.

What professional accomplishments make you most proud?

I have been with the Company

since the beginning of performances

in the Capitol Theater. The first

performance was “Othello” and the

director was Fred Adams. We had

ten costumes and one box of sewing

supplies. I have helped build that

supply to over $3 million worth of

costume stock.

What are your top SUU memories?

I learned to make the most of

whatever I did by working with

Fred Adams in various theatrical

productions and with the Utah

Shakespearean Festival. Through

him, I came to love the arts.

How do you impact your community?

Currently, I’m a Venture Crew

Chief for a Venture Scouting Group

in Pittsburgh. Also, this past year,

my wife and I have been active in

charity walks with Highmark and

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

for dear friends who have family

with leukemia and cerebral palsy.

What are your favorite SUU memories?

There are so many: my time as

an RA in Manzanita, giving tours as

a Presidential Ambassador, working

on projects with SUUSA. Another

that stands out would be going to

a National Corndog Day (March 20)

party that good friends of mine put

together year after year.

Do you have any SUU-related traditions?

While we lived in St. George,

before we moved to Pittsburgh, I

really enjoyed the annual alumni

BBQ, but since we’re out here, I

guess I need to create some new SUU

traditions.

What SUU class has most impacted your success?

I have used the knowledge from

communication graphics almost

every day since college. I enhance

pictures using Photoshop, and I

use the information about building

websites on a daily basis with my

business.

What is your favorite vacation spot?

My husband and I LOVE to go on

cruises. There’s just something about

being able to eat pizza at midnight

that makes me really happy.

What are your hobbies?I love Halloween, and last year my

family and I carved 55 pumpkins!

I also love to go boating with my

family and, of course, I love to

decorate.

Do you have any longstanding SUU traditions?

The friends I associate with every

day are the people I met at SUU.

We also try to return to SUU for

the opening ceremonies of the Utah

Summer Games every year.

It is easy to see the sense as well as sensibility in Steven

D. Bennion accepting the executive directorship of the

Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service

at SUU four years after retiring as the University’s 14th

president in 2006.

The Bennion family legacy and his

own attachment to SUU are obvious

starting places. But, perhaps a more

evident rationale is his love of country,

politics and public service and his

deep regard for Leavitt, former Utah

governor and cabinet member for

President George W. Bush.

“One of my signal achievements as

SUU president was the creation of a

Center for Politics and Public Service,”

explained Bennion. “We happily named

the center in honor of one of SUU’s most distinguished

alumni, Michael O. Leavitt (‘78), whose donations of his

official papers and documents to SUU have enhanced the

opportunity for students and faculty to benefit from his

extensive public leadership and service.”

In return, Leavitt is quick to hail Bennion’s return to

service at the University.

“A combination of seasoned scholarship and a lifetime

of leadership puts Dr. Bennion in a position to provide

students at the Center for Politics and Public Service with

a truly unique academic experience.”

As executive director, Bennion will ensure the Leavitt

Center fulfills its mission of 1) providing student leadership

opportunities through political and public

engagement and 2) providing a forum in

southern Utah to debate the political issues

and policies that affect our state.

In a story well known to many, Bennion’s

tenure was a kind of familial homecoming

since his grandfather, Milton Bennion,

served as the founding principal of the then

Branch Normal School. Now, his grandson

readily emphasizes that great teamwork

was the key to his own achievements

as SUU president. “One who is too often

overlooked is Marj, my wife of 46 years,

who is an indispensable partner in everything we have

done,” he said.

Bennion’s SUU years are marked by countless

accomplishments; yet he lists the Leavitt Center and its

success as one of his most treasured achievements.

“I am delighted to serve at the Center and enable

students, political leaders, faculty and others to discuss

public issues and to engage our students in service and

leadership opportunities.”

They come here to change their lives. With your help, they will change the world.

• An SUU education should be affordable and accessible to all qualified students.

• Enrolled students should be assured the opportunity to complete their studies, regardless of financial circumstance.

• Students should graduate with the freedom to pursue careers unconstrained by student debt.

DENISE WOODBURYSUU is filled

with stories of

faculty who have

forever impacted

students, and

Denise Woodbury

was no exception. A brilliant scholar,

dedicated teacher and engaged

community member, Denise touched

all who met her in her career

spanning nearly a decade. She passed

away May 2 and will be truly missed.

Born at Tachikawa Air Base in

Tokyo, Denise was always a skilled

academician. She graduated from

high school at just 15 and from

BYU at the age of 18. Denise went

on to complete her Ph.D. from the

University of Utah and later earned

a master’s degree in psychology

and two other master’s degrees in

education fields.

In her tenure as an assistant

professor of business administration

and then associate professor of

finance, Denise was a mentor to

thousands of SUU business students.

“She genuinely cared about students,

both academically and personally,”

says R. Kim Craft, chair of the

SUU Department of Economics and

Finance.

To carry on her legacy, the

Woodbury family has established

the Dr. Denise Woodbury Endowment

for Business Students Scholarship to

help business students attend SUU.

Donations can be made to the SUU

Advancement Office, Attention: Lori

Blackner, 351 West University Blvd.,

Cedar City, Utah 84720.

The Grammy Award-winning Oak

Ridge Boys return to Cedar City and the

Centrum Arena this December with their

crowd-pleasing Christmas show. This

marks their 15th appearance at Southern

Utah University and continues a tradition

that has spanned the careers of the Oaks

and generations of Thunderbird fans.

The group’s connection with SUU

began in 1976 when they were given

a chance to play for students by then

director of student activities Ken Benson.

Ever since, the Boys have hit Cedar City

on their major tours, playing for students,

alumni and community members. “Over

the years we made many friends and also

made a lot of history in this great college

town,” says Oaks tenor Joe Bonsall.

“Southern Utah folks have always been

great to us and the all around family

atmosphere is what our show is all

about.”

Though the band saw its greatest

recording success in earlier years, they

still continue to sell out venues across

the country, and are one of only two

major bands to sell out the Centrum

Arena at SUU. The group was recently

named Best Music Act by American

Entertainment Magazine and was

given the 2008 Cliffie Stone Pioneer

Award for Lifetime Achievement at the

Academy of Country Music Awards.

The Christmas concert will be in the

Centrum Arena on December 1, 2010,

with tickets starting at just $15 for

students and $20 for adults.

Tickets (on sale Oct . 1) : $15 for Students $ 20 for Adults Call the Centrum Ticket Of fice at 435-586-7872
