The Sweetheart Lace Scarf is a sweet little treat for you or your sweetheart!  A column of hearts emerges from a simple pattern of mesh and shell stitches as you work.  (Sorry for the in progress photo ­ I am unable to retrieve finished photos at the moment, but I 

wanted to share this pattern with you all in time for Valentine’s Day)  

Materials  Abbreviations 

● 150 grams of sport or DK weight yarn. (Sample shown in Freia Ombre Sport, 100% wool, Valentine colorway)  

● Size G (4.0 mm) Crochet Hook  ● Tapestry needle for weaving in ends ● Blocking supplies 

  

● CH ­ Chain ● CH SP ­ Chain Space ● SL ST ­ Slip Stitch ● SC ­ Single Crochet ● DC ­ Double Crochet ● SH ­ Shell ● SK ­ Skip ● ST(S) ­ Stitch(es) 

  Gauge:  Gauge is not terribly important to this pattern, but sample gauge was as follows:  Each repeat of rows 3­7 is 2 inches tall, unstretched.  Finished scarf is about 6” x 60”.

Notes/Special Stitches/Techniques  ● Shell: [DC, CH1, DC, CH1, DC] in indicated stitch 

● The CH1 at the end of odd rows does not count as a stitch 

● The CH3 at the beginning of even rows counts as a double crochet throughout 

● Row 3, and each odd row thereafter, begins with a slip stitch prior to making the starting chain. This anchors your starting chain to the center of the last stitch of the previous row, instead of letting the starting chain kind of hang off the edge of the last stitch of the previous row. This little anchoring technique eliminates the gap that usually forms between the tall starting chain and the next double crochet stitch, and makes the column of double crochet stitches more uniform than a standard starting chain would. This is an optional technique. If your starting chains do not tend to leave a gaping hole like mine do, feel free to skip this maneuver.  

● Starting Chain and Row 1 may be replaced with Foundation Single Crochet, if you like. You would start with FSC 27, CH1, turn, and proceed to Row 2.  

● FSC Instructions: CH 2. Insert hook in 2nd CH from hook, YO, Pull through, YO, Pull through first loop on hook. (CH made). YO, Pull through both loops on hook (SC made). This is one FSC. Insert hook into CH just made in last step. YO, pull through, YO, pull through first loop on hook, YO, pull through both loops on hook.1 FSC made. Continue to necessary number of FSC.

Scarf  Instructions (see chart on page 4)  

CH 28 

Row 1: SC in 2nd chain from hook, and each chain across. CH1, Turn. (The chain 1 does not count as a stitch here, and throughout)  

Row 2: SC in first two stitches. *CH5, SK3, SC in next SC*. Repeat from * until there is one stitch remaining, SC in last SC. Turn.  

Row 3: SL ST in first SC, CH 3 (counts as first DC here and throughout). DC in next SC, CH2, [SC in center of next CH SP, CH5] twice, SC in center of next CH SP, SH in next SC, [SC in next CH SP, CH5] twice, SC in next CH SP, CH2, DC in last two SC. CH1, Turn. 

Row 4:.SC in first two stitches. CH5, SK first CH 2 SP, SC in center of next CH SP, CH5, SC in center of next CH SP, SH in next SC, SC in center DC of next SH, SH in next SC, SC in center of next CH SP, CH5, SC in center of next CH SP, CH 5, SC in next DC, SC in top chain of turning chain from previous row. Turn.  

Row 5: SL ST in first SC, CH 3, DC in next SC, CH2, SC in center of next CH SP, CH5, SC in center of next CH SP, SH in next SC, [SC in center DC of SH, SH in next SC] twice, SC in center of next CH SP, CH5, SC in center of next CH SP, CH2, DC in last two SC. CH1, Turn. 

Row 6: SC in first two stitches. CH5, SK first CH 2 SP, SC in center of next CH SP, [SH in next SC, SC in center DC of next SH] three times, SH in next SC, SC in center of next CH SP, CH 5, SC in next DC, SC in top chain of turning chain from previous row. Turn. 

Row 7: SL ST in first SC, CH 3, DC in next SC, CH2, SC in center of next CH SP, [CH5, SC in center DC of next SH, SH in next SC, SC in center DC of next SH] twice, CH5, SC in center of next CH SP, CH2, DC in last two SC. CH 1, Turn.  

Row 8: SC in first two stitches. CH5, SK first CH 2 SP, SC in center of next CH SP, CH 5, [SC in center DC of next SH, CH 5, SC in center of next CH SP, CH 5] twice, SC in next DC, SC in top chain of turning chain from previous row. Turn. 

Repeat rows 3­8 until scarf is almost the desired length (mine was 30 repeats).  Repeat rows 3­7 once more, then proceed to rows A & B.  Row A: SC in first two stitches, CH3, SK first CH 2 SP and next SC, [SC in center of next CH SP, CH3, SK next SC, SC in center DC of next SH, CH3]  twice, SC in next CH SP, CH 3, SC in next DC, SC in top of turning chain from previous row, CH 1, Turn.  

Row B: SC in first two stitches, *3 SC in CH SP, SC in next SC*. Repeat from * until there is one SC remaining. SC in final SC. Fasten off.   

Finishing: weave in ends, and block as desired. I recommend wet blocking, stretching the hearts for an airy look on this one.
