Annual Report SAC 2016 4

Foreword from Roland HengartnerPresident of the SAC and CEO of Aerolite AG

Dear Swiss Aerospace Cluster members,Dear ladies and gentlemen,

we are very proud to have nearly reached the 100 member-mark in our network. We have started to build up relationships internationally and managed to expand in Switzerland at the same time.

In 2016, we had some outstanding events with partner and member organizations. We had visitors from Zhuhai (China), who were loo-king for Business relations with the SAC. Additionally, we had two very productive meetings with our member-colleagues from Alabama (USA) to foster further collaboration in this market. Also in the Indian market, we had a very interesting meeting on business opportunities in the Indian market with colleagues from an Indian Aerospace Clus-ter. We try to expand those relationships and benefit from them in the near future.

Also a major milestone in our history is the announcement of the new Working Group Helicopter and its Helicopter Competence Cen-ter in Mollis. With all our effort we are now in a position to actively drive the communication to other Business Regions such as the Midd-le East. At the end of April 2017, we have signed a MOU (Memory of Understanding) with Dubai South to consult them on Helicopter Competence. A great opportunity to start a healthy business relati-onship for the future in Aviation business. For the near future, we try to further expand our the market relationships and actively foster our networking activities within our organization to build bridges to other business regions.

Besides our market activities, we had a few Networking Events with our members and partner organizations. We had the chance to visit the Zhuhai Airshow. We were invited to this unique event by the In-dustrial Ministry of Zhuhai. Furthermore, we had the first joint Net-working event with Anavant and several small meetings where mem-

bers or partner organizations of the SAC came together in a formal or informal setting.

An Outlook into the near future shows me a lot of new Networking opportunities with upcoming airshows in Middle East or in China. Mo-reover, the proactive exchange of knowledge between the SAC and partnering clusters from Europe (EACP) or the US and joint events, such as the BAM, show the drive and passion of the SAC members to continuously develop and expand the relationships of this unique network. The SAC is willing to support our members to get in contact with Business Partners, elaborate new markets or expand the net-work within the industry with formal or informal settings. With our new Directory and the improvement of our communication channels, our partners around the world have the chance to get a full overview what our Aviation industry is able to do. I can only send out the mes-sage: get in contact and start the business.

Thanks to all your effort, for the contribution of the success with your membership and special thanks to our donors, business partners and cluster partners from from all over the world.

Best regards,

Roland Hengartner

5 Annual Report SAC 2016

Dear members of the Swiss Aerospace Cluster,

In May 2016, the Swiss Aerospace Cluster and Switzerland Global Enterprise, with its Swiss Business Hub Middle East, launched the ´Swiss Aviation and Aerospace Cluster Middle East´. Since then the newly established Cluster Middle East has actively worked towards creating a higher visibility for Swiss companies and strengthening the awareness of Swiss Excellence in Aviation and Aerospace in general in one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Dubai South and the Swiss Aerospace Cluster in April this year is yet another step in this direction.

Dubai South is the free zone that will host the world's biggest airport - Dubai World Central-, as well as Expo 2020. Around the airport, a whole Aviation District is currently under development. In March, the

globally active Swiss logistics and freight forwarding company ‘Panalpi-na’ opened a new state-of-the-art logistics and manufacturing facility in Dubai South. Other Swiss companies, from SME to Multinationals, such as Nestlé, have also moved to Dubai South. We are currently wit-nessing the creation of the world’s first true airotropolis – an entire city that is built around and for an airport.

The importance of the MoU signed by Dubai South and the Aerospa-ce Cluster is highlighted by the fact that it is the first one of its kind that Dubai South has signed. The intention of building a strong part-nership with Dubai South is to give the Swiss Aerospace Cluster and its members the unique opportunity to take an active part in the successful development of the world's biggest airport. While Switzer-land is known for its innovative technical skills it is usually not among the first to explore new market opportunities. This time, we have the chance to be among the first to make use of this unique opportunity.

Best regards,

Consul General andDirector Swiss Business Hub

Annual Report SAC 2016 6

Greetings from Martin LaupperMayor of Glarus Nord

Dear membersLadies and gentlemen

It is my great pleasure and an honour to be invited to write, in my capacity as mayor of the municipality Glarus Nord, the preface for this year’s Swiss Aerospace Cluster Directory and thereby briefly present our aviation projects.

For more than 100 years, aviation has played an important part for Glarus Nord as the host community of the airport Glarus Nord/Mol-lis. Therefore, the municipality of Glarus Nord decided in 2012 to purchase the former military airport and transform it into an airfield for civil use.

We uphold a strategy of securing and economically developing in a purposeful way a region that has accommodated various aviation companies throughout the past. Currently, Glarus Nord sees the de-velopment of the very first Swiss built helicopter by Marenco Swiss-helicopters AG.

It is a narrative we are all part of shaping: Since last year, we have been a member of the Swiss Aerospace Cluster. Together with other par-ticipants, we are working towards establishing Glarus Nord as a heli-copter competence centre. It is our objective to purposefully develop the airfield Glarus Nord into a significant business hub with numerous new jobs adding value to the area. The economic conditions for this undertaking are most promising – now the opportunities have to be seized.

For the benefit of the municipality Glarus Nord, the canton Glarus and the Swiss aviation business.

Most cordially, your

Martin LaupperMayor of Glarus Nord

Bodies of the Swiss Aerospace Cluster

2016 has been a year of small changes in the organs of the Swiss Ae-rospace Cluster. All members of 2015 continued their work in 2016. At the general assembly on 17 June 2016 in Mollis, the members elec-ted Roland Hengartner from Aerolite as the new president of the board. The board is particularly happy with this appointment because it further strengthens the representation of the industry which has been a long term goal for the SAC.

The advisory board remained unchanged. Only Peter Soller will be in the advisory board instead of Werner Epper. The board is grateful that all seven members volunteered to support the cluster in the future. In October 2016 the board met with the advisory board for fruitful exchange of ideas and discussions.

The board wishes to thank the members of the advisory board for their continuing commitment and support. In the following you will find the list of the members of the board and the advisory board.

Annual Report SAC 2016 10

Financial Report 2016by Dr. Andreas Wittmer

The operational year in 2016 concludes with a profit of 5'770.71 CHF, primarily because of the financial contribution which the Office for Economy and Labor of the Canton Zurich has contributed in 2016 for specific projects or the general organization of the Cluster and in large scale because of the rising membership basis and the support of partners and supporters.

The number of events and projects also increased in the financial year 2016. This led to more costs and more administrative expenses. In addition, the Cluster founded two new Working Groups, “Helicopter” and “Aviation and Aerospace Cluster Middle East”, which led to an increasing administrative expenditure as well. Furthermore, we are proud to have a solid member basis and were able to acquire more than 15 new member last year. This leads to stable membership fees and the financial and administrative security for the organization of the Cluster.

According to the monetary budget, the Cluster Office was led cost-ef-fectively by the Center for Aviation Competence (CFAC-HSG) and therefore contributed to the positive result. The costs of the Cluster are predictable and therefore under good control. Risks are more likely on the income side where changes of the number of members can have positive or negative effects next year and the need of further financial support by the state of Zurich for specific projects

11 Annual Report SAC 2016

Members

Since its foundation in 2010, the Swiss Aerospace Cluster has been able to increase the membership numbers every year. As by the end of the year (31.12.2016) the cluster had 89 members. During the year, the cluster gained twenty new members vis-à-vis five exits per 01.01.2017. The coming year promises a further rise of members due to its newly increased activities.

Membership StructureThe Swiss Aerospace Cluster consists of the following categories of members: • Producing suppliers like aircraft cabin outfitters, lightweight const-ruction, surface technologyand process engineering to avionics • Universities, universities of applied sciences, R&D institutions • Service providers in the aerospace industry like lawyers, insurance companies, consulting andengineering, (further) education and certification, trade and charter brokers • Cantonal administrations, public services and export promotion organizations • Associations and networks

It is a declared goal of the cluster to enable advanced cooperation among our members since increasing numbers of members are the best way to enlarge cooperation possibilities. With this goal in mind, our focus still lies on continuously acquiring more members, particu-larly in the aeropsace producing and service industry.

We thus encourage our members to actively spread the word about our organization in order to make the cluster widely known. Experi-ence has shown that word-of-mouth recommendation by the mem-bers is the best publicity for a network.

Membership Benefits • Network of manufacturers, service providers, universities, universi-ties of applied sciences, federations, public institutions, (emphasis on SMEs) • Exclusive access to networking/input/knowledge sharing events with national and international participants from economy, research and politics • Entrance to public events, trade fairs and forums at reduced prices • Support in new markets, market segments or customers throughout the cooperation with swiss federal offices, international organizations (ESA, EACP,..), cantons (ZH, NW), and interdisciplinary institutions • Transfer of Know-how and technological skills in the sector of ae-rospace and satellite navigation through the cooperation with rese-arch institutions and universities • Active exchange of information and knowledge between all partners • Fostering of the aerospace and satellite navigation industry in ge-neral • Cross clustering with e.g. EACP, LRBW,… • International cooperations in projects

The studies on fatigue risk of flight personnel continued also in 2016 but now focused mainly on the identification of its influencing factors. Because the internal body clock is a key element in determining our vulnerability towards fatigue, our research encompasses aspects of chronobiology.

Light plays a crucial role in chronobiology for instance, guiding many central functions in biological clocks like readjusting them. Conse-quentially we first initiated a study in which the mental performance of humans exposed to various lighting conditions were investigated.

Therefore, volunteers were tested in especially light-equipped rooms. Currently, we are analyzing the gathered data of the study to explore how strongly particular light characteristics (e.g. frequency, intensity, exposure duration) influence the mental performance.

This knowledge can then be used to design treatment strategies to reduce the fatigue risk of flight personnel in the future.

nology Training Center. The visit in Ozark, Fort Rucker, Daleville and Dothan gave a very good impression of the wide range of possibilities South Alabama is offering for aviation companies.

In June the SAC welcomed in Dübendorf a high level delegation from Zhuhai, China. Several SAC member companies attended the presen-tation and learned about the business opportunities for Swiss com-panies in China. After the presentations the guests have been invited to an unforgettable flight with the legendary JU-52 over Switzerland.

In September a Joint Networking Event was organised between the Swiss Aerospace Cluster and the Swiss Association of Technical Com-mercial Staff Anavant in Egerkingen. Hosting company was the SAC member company Härterei Gerster, after the company presentation, the visitors learned during the facility tour more about the various heat treatment processes Gerster is offering to various industries including aerospace. As guest speaker Veronica Crook from US Alaba-ma presented the opportunities in the US for aviation companies.

During 2016 the Aerospace Supply Chain working group was bringing in new SAC member companies: • HABA Aerospace • Resource Group • Schenker Schweiz AG

2016 started with the 5th Bodensee Aerospace Meeting in Überlingen with a very interesting factory tour of Diehl Aerospace. The forum and the exhibition were an ideal platform for networking in our in-dustry.

In March the SAC organised a fact finding mission of the US delegati-on from Alabama Dale County.

Swiss Aerospace Cluster represented by Mr. Roland Hengartner from Aerolite welcomed the high level US delegation from Alabama. Kuerzi Avionics hosted the event at their head office at Lommis Airport Swit-zerland. Representants from guest companies ; APM Technica, Imbach & Cie and Gunnar participated at the meeting. Mr. Walter Eschenmo-ser from Baader Consulting initiated the fact finding mission together with economic development corporations located in the southeast and northeast in the state of Alabama. The goal of the meeting to pro-mote Alabama as the center of the aviation and aerospace corridor was achieved alongside with the networking opportunity of interes-ted Swiss companies to build up a business relationship with aviation and aerospace companies located in Alabama. After the meeting, the guests made a factory tour at Kuerzi Avionics, the Head of Producti-on, Mr. Andreas Eggenberger showed the very interested guests the installation work in the hangar, the production of new components and the maintenance workshop.

Soon after the first follow up visit in US Alabama, the SAC had the opportunity to visit several aviation companies and the Aviation Tech-

Aviation and Aerospace Cluster Middle EastBy Chris Watts

In May 2016, the Swiss Aerospace Cluster and Switzerland Global Enterprise with its Swiss Business Hub Middle East launched the ´Swiss Aviation and Aerospace Cluster Middle East´, with the aim of representing ´Swiss Excellence in Aviation and Aerospace´ and crea-ting a higher visibility for Swiss companies.Over the last decade, the manned aerospace industry has grown and taken shape like no other sector all over the world, but especially in the Middle East. The rapid growth that the International Airport of Dubai (DXB) witnessed has turned it into the largest international airport in the world. Further-more, the planned and the ongoing investments in the new Al Mak-toum International Airport (DWC) will also continuously lead to the strengthening of the aviation sector within the economy of the Middle East and with Dubai as its growth center.

With the Ribbon Cutting event during the Airport Show 2016 in Du-bai, the Aviation and Aerospace Cluster Middle East started its acti-vities not just during the show, but also with a dinner reception at the official Swiss Residence of the Consul General of Switzerland in Dubai. During the evening dinner, Swiss companies were able to in-teract and connect with local companies and experts in order to gain market knowledge and discuss potential projects.

Activities such as the ´Potentials of the Middle East´-presentation at the General Assembly of the Swiss Aerospace Cluster as well as the support of Middle East business activities of the companies of the Swiss Aerospace Cluster were as important as the S-GE event ´Midd-

le East Impulse - Aviation and Airport Infrastructure´, in order to take the first steps to grow the business opportunities for companies of the Swiss Aerospace Cluster.

As a result, Swiss aviation companies have now the opportunity to get better access to information, market entry consultation and support in their activities across the Gulf countries

The Swiss Aviation and Aerospace Cluster Middle East aims to connect the stakeholders of the different markets to bring them clo-ser together in order to build long-lasting and successful relations-hips. As a result, the first potential project has already been identified and the cluster supported several Swiss companies while creating a proposal for building up Helicopter activities in Dubai. After the suc-cessful start of the first months, the members of the cluster will work closely together to create a promising future for Swiss companies in the Middle East.

Satellite Navigation and AstronauticsBy Dr. Maurizio Scaramuzza and Prof. Alain Geiger

This working group acts as networking platform between projects, contests and specialist divisions of satellite na-vigation and astronautics. However, the professional group will not lead pro-jects or execute project-related tasks. For the seventh time, the section sup-ported in the framework of the Euro- Image: ESA/Pierre Carril

pean Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC), the yearly contest for the region "Switzerland" by assembling the judging panel. The president is a member of the section.

Moreover, the Swiss Space Office supported the regional contest "Swit-zerland" including internal and/or external experts. The ESNC wants to foster Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) / Galileo / European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) around the world. Twenty-four partner regions and countries participate in the contest; technically supervised and evaluated by over 240 experts from industry and research. The total price sum amounts to approximately 1 million € per year. In 2016 more than 400 inputs from more than 40 countries were submitted. Annual Report SAC 2016 24

This was a milestone year for the Centre for Aviation of the ZHAW – Zürich University of Applied Sciences. In the autumn of 2016 the Ba-chelor’s degree programme in Aviation celebrated its tenth anniver-sary. Since it was launched in 2006, this unique degree has gone from strength to strength and is today one of the most successful degree programmes at the ZHAW School of Engineering.Despite the fact that the aviation industry has a tendency to react vehemently to shifts and changes in the international markets, it is safe to say that the aviation industry will remain a thriving industry with significant potential for growth. Currently, the biggest stumbling block standing in the way of this growth is the anticipated shortfall in the availability of properly trained and educated personnel across all professional categories within aviation. This shortfall is already being addressed by ICAO through its Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) initiative. The Cent-re for Aviation is actively participating in this initiative and currently holds the chair for the research and education working group within the ICAO NGAP initiative. The study for Drone Technology from TA-SWISS brings a lot of effort and discussion how this new system can be integrated in the current aviation system. A larger project funded by FOCA is the development of operation procedures for RPAS below 30 Kilogramms. The Centre for Aviation is also very active in the design and development of Re-mote Pilot Station (RPS) for unmanned systems. The Centre for Aviation has completed the EU ClaenLE2 project for Clean Leading Ground Test Simulator for the demonstration of the feasibility of an in-flight anti-contamination device for business jets. The project lead had EPFL in Lausanne. We were able to demonstrate sufficient cleaning of 5% of chord for a business jet with remaining height of insect contamination less than 0.04 mm. The cleaning device with cart and shuttle were perfectly function and impressed the team from Dassault and Airbus, see picture. The Human Factors team of the Centre for Aviation was heavily invol-ved in Fatigue Risk Management projects for airlines and MRO main-

tenance service centers. New methods were adopted to serve the aviation industry and contribute to safety. Also the helicopter opera-tors even outside Switzerland got a lot of attention in these activities. This will also be useful for the new working group Helicopter and Safety and Risk Analysis. With this in mind, the ZHAW School of Engineering is putting a strong emphasis on strengthening and promoting international relations. In line with the international strategy of the ZHAW School of Enginee-ring, the Centre for Aviation has put a lot of effort into expanding its own international network in 2016. In the spring, the Centre for Aviation became one of founding members of the ATAERA research and education consortium, together with the Amsterdam Universi-ty of Applied Sciences, the University of Zilina, Embry-Riddle, Purdue University and others. Currently, negotiations are on going with the provincial government of Hubei Province in the People’s Republic of China that will see the Centre for Aviation setting up a flight training organisation in Yi Ch-ang on behalf of Hainan Aviation. This envisaged partnership highlights the Centre for Aviation’s commitment to international cooperation and further strengthens our position as an internationally recognised research institute. On a national level, 2016 also saw the launch of the Swiss Aviation Research Centre – SARC, which was officially unveiled at the Swiss Aviation Days in December.

29 Annual Report SAC 2016

Member Survey

In November and December 2016, the Swiss Aerospace Cluster con-ducted a survey with the aim of finding out about the crucial needs and requests of our members.

The results should help us improve the cooperation and to respond even better to our members demands. Our intention is to help our members achieving their goals and to offer thereby a maximum added value.

The survey was elaborated by the Center for Aviation Competence of the University of St. Gallen (CFAC-HSG). It is based on cluster- and network theories that measure the realization of a cluster’s potential.

Through the survey, our actual state could be compared with the target state from our member’s point of view. As a result, recommen-dations for actions could be detected which should help us improve the prioritized output range. 44 of 89 invited members completed the questionnaire, which is a response rate of 49.9%.

The analysis of the completed surveys led us to four key takeaways: • For the most part, interaction between our members takes place at events, such as exhibitions and panels • To extend the own network and the cooperation between the members are considered as the main benefits • New memberships and limited internal resources are the main rea-sons for not being present at events which are organized by the Swiss Aerospace Cluster • There is a special interest in executive education and in innovative cooperation’s between the members

Thereupon, it was our objective to include these findings in our stra-tegy and in our 2017-year-planning. To foster the networking and cooperation between our members, we will organize in 2017 Net-working Events (e.g. General Assembly), a Swiss Aerospace Cluster Lounge at trade fairs and Themed Events (e.g. BAM, ERFA, CFAC Fo-rum).

We help our members getting access to new markets by offering sup-port and consultation with ours partners like S-GE or T-Link. Acade-mic knowledge and a refreshment of one’s know-how is guaranteed by the executive education offers of our partners, such as the Center for Aviation Competence (CFAC-HSG).

The Swiss Aerospace Cluster would like to thank all participants for their contribution!

National and International Cooperation

The Swiss Aerospace Cluster is still involved in establishing new con-tacts and maintaining existing partnerships with European aerospace clusters. Most of these foreign aerospace clusters are members of the EU supported EACP European Aerospace Cluster Partnership. The EACP organizes regularly events on aerospace topics all over Europe. There is still room for taking more advantage of the offers by EACP. We are in close contact or involved in common projects with the following aerospace clusters:

Forum Luft- und Raumfahrt Baden-Württemberg (LR BW)For several years now, our two clusters have been working closely and successfully together. Prime Partners

We would like to call the members‘ attention to the existing service offers by our prime partners. The cluster maintains several partners-hips in the fields of law counselling and communication. It is their par-ticular strength that they have an intimate knowledge of the aviation sector and its challenges.

By choosing one of our prime partners you also support the Swiss Aerospace Cluster, because a small share of the advisory costs are transferred to the cluster. The cluster office will gladly get you in touch with the prime partners. In case you contact the prime partners directly, make sure to disclose your membership in order to trigger the kick-back. This way, both the members and the cluster benefit.

Sponsors, Donors and Supporters

The Swiss Aerospace Cluster is grateful for the valuable support both of the financial and ideational kind. The cluster wishes to thank all its sponsors, donors and supporters.

While some of the sponsors in 2016 have been supporting specific events, others – with their repeated commitment and backing – have contributed substantially to the continuing improvement and develop-ment of the cluster, by providing us with meeting rooms, project fun-ding and other forms of support.

Without this precious help, the cluster would not be the network it is now, after six years of intensive and rewarding work by its board, the advisory committee and numerous actively participating members.

We thank all our sponsors, donors and supports for keeping up with our spirit and helping us to foster the network in the Aerospace in-dustry nationally and internationally.

Publications

New Flyer of the Swiss Aerospace ClusterIn spring 2017, the Swiss Aerospace Cluster has published its new and updated flyer. It is available in print and online. The flyer is a marketing tool for acquiring new members and making known the cluster’s activities and benefits. Its design is consistent with the new Swiss competence gui-de the Swiss Aerospace Directory.

2nd edition of the Swiss Aerospace DirectoryAfter three years, the cluster is proud to present the second edition of the Swiss Aerospace Directory. As the new flyer, it has been professionally designed and lay-outed in order to convey a professional image of the cluster and its members.

The Swiss Aerospace Directory covers the more than 70 companies and institu-tions that are member of the Swiss Ae-rospace Cluster. In short portraits of the companies and organizations they present their core competences and strengths. The directory enhances the visibility of this highly innovative sector and the indivi-dual firms. The directory is both designed for external marketing purposes and for internal use. Especially its competence matrix at the end of the publication helps finding cooperation partners and thereby facilitates knowledge exchange.

The board has decided to distribute the new Swiss Aerospace Directory for free in order to spread it more widely (e.g. at trade fairs and via its members) among in-terested parts.
