Arsenal completed the double by winning the Premiership and the FA Cup final. Thierry Henry weighing in with some 24 goals. The World Cup, held in Japan, saw Brazil beat Germany 2-0, and in the FA Vase Whitley Bay completed a 1-0 win over Tiptree United. 2002 was the Queens Golden Jubilee, and talking royalty, the Queen Mother and Princes Margaret both passed away. Comic Spike Milligan died in February, and his gravestone quip of “I told you I was ill” is one of the most famous epitaphs ever. On the small screen I’m A Celebrity made its first appearance whilst The Fast and the Furious was a hit at the cinema in September 2001, and Gareth Gates’ “Unchained Melody” was flying high just six months later. Meanwhile in the local county FA competitions the finals finished, Weymouth 1-1 Dorchester Town in Dorset, but headed south over the Ridgeway after the Terras claimed the trophy courtesy of a 4-3 win on kicks from the penalty mark. In Hampshire Aldershot Town defeated Havant & Waterlooville 3-1. Pewsey marked their first season in the Hellenic League Division 1 West, after a move from the Western League, and with a runners up slot earned promotion to the Premier at the end of the season. However on the debit side they went down by a single goal to nil against Malmesbury Victoria in the Wiltshire equivalent. An all-Wessex affair at Victoria Park on 8 May 2002, where Andover saw off the Poppies 2-0 in front of over 180 spectators. Paul Odey with a double being enough to help see the north Hampshire side lift the Russell-Cotes Cup.

Division 1 results grid for that season-

In the Wessex League Cup Final it finished Andover 1-0 Fleet Town at Gosport Borough with Paul Odey the marksman. We continue our look back at five year history with the sixteenth season of the Wessex League with it still having the one Division of twenty three Clubs, the same number as the previous season but with one change of personnel. Portsmouth Royal Navy, the forerunners of the present US Portsmouth, had finished in bottom place in 2000/01 and dropped back in to the Hampshire League and were replaced by Portland United making their bow in the Competition. The Dorset side had finished second to Hamworthy Recreation in the Dorset Combination – now the Dorset Premier League – and some 20 years on the “Rec” are still very much “Kings of the Walk” as far as that League is concerned. The final League Table reads like a veritable Who’s Who of the Sydenhams League and initial observation gives comment to the number of goals scored. Five Clubs topped the hundred mark and an equal number conceded a hundred or more with Swanage & Herston averaging four goals per game at the wrong end. (They had conceded 123 the previous season). Overall, it equates to three and a half goals scored per game. With Full Time not in operation at that stage it is very difficult to track down facts and figures throughout the season so with apologies to the remaining 20 Clubs, who all played their part in a successful campaign, we will concentrate on the three who were leading the race for the Title as the season moved in to its final month. On the opening day of the season, which was not until August 18th and late by today’s standards, Fleet scored the only goal of the game at Downton and AFC Totton defeated Hamble 6-0. Andover, for reasons unknown at this stage, did not commence until the following Wednesday when they won 5-3 at Brockenhurst. To break away from those three briefly, Portland marked their Wessex League debut with a 5-1 win at Swanage. Back to the leading three and fast forward some seven months to the beginning of April and the final run in with the positions reading thus. AFC Totton Played 39, 79 points Fleet Town Played 36, 76 points Andover Played 33, 73 points

Back to the old question – better to have points in the bag or games in hand with Totton having just five games to play whilst Andover had eleven. Fleet incidentally had suffered a one point deduction in the course of the season – as to why is difficult to determine nearly twenty years on. April 1st was Easter Monday and a full programme of League matches were scheduled, whatever happened to those happy days- and whilst both Fleet and Totton won, away to Moneyfields and home to BAT respectively, Andover were held to a goalless draw by near neighbours Whitchurch, a result that was not in keeping with the two Clubs positions in the table. Andover pulled back one of their games in hand on the Wednesday, making a midweek trip to Cowes and returning to the mainland with three points and a 4-1 victory. The first Saturday in the month saw setbacks for Andover, as they went down 3-1 at home to Gosport, and Fleet who lost at Wimborne, whilst Totton beat Lymington 2-0 before sitting matters out for a fortnight as their opponents began to catch up on their outstanding games with Andover now having 77 points, Fleet 79 and Totton 85. The following week Andover went in to overdrive, winning at Moneyfields, Lymington and Bemerton and scoring 13 goals in the process, while Fleet collected six points by beating Thatcham at home and Fareham 5-3 away. So mid-month with Andover now having 86 points, Fleet 85 and Thatcham (watching helplessly) also 85. Week three started with what looked at the time a very decisive result as Fleet secured a 5-3 victory at The Portway but Andover bounced back superbly beating Christchurch 7-2 on the Thursday before scoring nine without reply against Swanage on the Saturday. Swanage must have dreaded visiting the Portway, conceding 14 there the previous season. Fleet followed up their win over Andover by making the very long trip to Portland and winning by the odd goal in five whilst Totton returned to action with a 2-1 defeat of Moneyfields. One week to go – Andover 92 points with two to play, Fleet 94 with one game to play and Totton 88 with two to play. To add spice to the situation by accident or design Fleet and Andover were to meet on the last day. Prior to that Andover won 2-0 at Whitchurch and Totton achieved the same result at Wimborne, meaning the Stags could no longer take the title despite a convincing 4-1 win at Thatcham on the final day. A crowd of 623 filled Calthorpe Park on the Saturday – at that time a record for a Wessex League match – and saw a nervy, ultra-cautious game finish all square at one apiece with Andover therefore retaining their Title but bagging 20 less points in the process. Consolation for Fleet in that Andover had not applied for promotion so it was the runners up who went in to the Southern League the following year. The two sides also met in the Final of the League Cup with Andover winning 1-0 at Gosport’s Privett Park. A third Trophy went to the Portway when Andover took the Russell-Cotes Cup with victory over Bournemouth at Victoria Park after the Poppies had defeated Havant & Waterlooville in the semi-final.

FA CUP 2001/02 Eighteen of our teams saw action in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup with seven having the benefits of a home draw but only four progressed at first time of asking, Bournemouth beating Dorchester Town 3-1 with both Brockenhurst and Thatcham grabbing the same result over Three Bridges and North Leigh respectively. Fareham were the other host to go in to the hat with a 2-0 win over Chessington United at Cams. On the road we fared slightly better with five advancing at first time of asking. Gosport won 3-0 at Godalming & Guildford with Andover going one better at Ramsgate. Wimborne ran in five but conceded twice at Tuffley. To complete the set BAT won by the odd goal in five at Hillingdon Borough and Christchurch won by the only goal of the game at Backwell. They were joined in the next round by replay victors Moneyfields and Eastleigh over Kent opposition in the form of Chatham and Tunbridge Wells respectively. The next round saw Fareham defeat Thatcham at Cams 2-1 with Andover beating Moneyfields by the same margin. Brockenhurst needed a second chance against Bedfont, a 3-2 win in an away replay seeing them through. Gosport also needed a replay after sharing six at Littlehampton before again scoring three but this time without reply.

Both Andover and Fareham shared two goals at home in the next round but only the former got the result in the replay 2-0 at Bashley with the Creeksiders conceded four without reply at Crawley. In the New Forest Brockenhurst won by the odd goal in three against Kingstonian. The 3rd Qualifying Round saw the Badgers go out at the hands of Cirencester Town. The Gloucestershire side had beaten Bournemouth (5-0) and Christchurch (3-1) en route to this game. Andover went down at home to Newport County 4-0 to end our involvement in the FA Cup. In brief- Bemerton were our best team in the Vase this time round, reaching the 4th Round before a 2-0 home reverse against Essex side Great Wakering. Home wins over Cullompton Rangers (6-1) and Dawlish Town (2-1) followed up with a 5-0 win at Cove and a 2-0 win at Thamesmead Town paving the way. Moneyfields had five games, and with all at home scored 20, before the third Round defeat to Porthleven who won by the odd goal in seven to overcome the Pompey side. After a big 7-1 win at BAT, Thatcham then won 2-0 over Bishop Sutton before losing by the same score in 3rd Round against the aforementioned Great Wakering.

LAST SIGHTING OF DOLPHINS IN THE WESSEX Back to the 2010/11 season this week and the last time the writer visited Tatnam. A fairly early in the season Premier Division fixture with Newport crossing to play Poole Town with the home side, the current League Champions, already topping the table and unbeaten in eleven matches to date. Newport were in tenth spot having played fewer games than most and matched their hosts on a sunny afternoon to head back to the Island with a two all draw ensuring the points were shared. Some well-known names on both sides – Lamin

Dibba, Michael Walker, Steve Richardson, Carl Preston and Dan Cann for the home side and Iain Seabrook, Scott Sampson, Charlie Smeeton and, almost inevitably, Gary Streeter and Darren Powell in the Newport colours. Tommy Killick and Derek Ohren led the advice from the two dugouts whilst another familiar figure on view was Andy Brown as one of the Assistants, a role he still carries out with the League to this day. An own goal and one from Steve Smith, coming off the Bench for Poole, were cancelled out by efforts from Scott Sampson and Darren Powell for the visitors to ensure parity and while Steve Smith may have started on the Bench on the afternoon under review, by the end of the season he had scored fifty one of Poole’s one hundred and thirty two League goals. The usual excellent Poole Programme, which I had assumed to be the work of long time Secretary Bill Reid, was actually compiled by Ian Claxton who, along with our Newsletter Editor, has few, if any, peers when it comes to the producing of Matchday Programmes. The previous Saturday Poole had defeated Bashley, then in the Southern

League, 1-0 in the FA Cup before an attendance of 837, at that time a record for the Ground. Where they all parked is not recorded. Poole had already won four games in the Competition that season prior to beating Bashley in the Second Qualifying Round but were beaten 3-1 at home by Hayes & Yeading in the next round. This was my fourth visit to Tatnam with Poole failing to win on any of the four visits, losing twice to Andover and drawing with Andover New Street on the three previous occasions. Tatnam marked the end of a nomadic spell for the Club after leaving the Stadium in Poole, during which I also saw them play once at Hamworthy United and twice at Holt United and they only won one of those three – albeit 7-0 against Stockbridge. Back to 2010/11 and at the end of the season Poole had won the League by a twenty point margin over nearest rivals Bemerton Heath and scored thirty two more goals than any other Club – Bournemouth were the only other side to top the three figure mark with exactly one hundred goals – and this time, unlike the previous year, their ground passed the ground grading criteria and they were promoted to the Southern League, thereby commencing on a climb up the Pyramid that reached the National League South. The Wessex League were pleased to help them on that journey.

LEAGUE NEWS

CONSTITUTION Welcome back to Blackfield & Langley, the Gang Warily club return sought voluntary relegation from the Southern League at the end of last season, and this was ratified by the FA earlier this week. They had enjoyed back to back promotions and were in 18th position in the Southern League Premier Division when the season was suspended, but loss of key personnel led them to make the request. With the departure of Solent University FC there is no change to the number of clubs in our top division. The constitution looks like this-

Welcome to Alex Pike in his new role with the League as Development Officer, this will entail him in assisting us to make progress through securing sponsorship and also be an asset to those clubs that need to develop themselves supporting them with his local knowledge and experience. This long track record locally, commenced with his football management career in junior football in the early 1980s with Dorset Police Reserves in the Bournemouth FA Wednesday League. A spell as assistant manager to former AFC Bournemouth, Bristol Rovers and Yeovil Town player Chris Weller at Holt United in the Dorset Premier League followed before Weller upped sticks to Wimborne. Just 18 months later though Pike and Nick Jennings assumed the role at Cuthbury after Weller was sacked. In 1991-1992, his first full season as sole manager of Wimborne Town, Pike won the Wessex League title, the Dorset Senior Cup and FA Vase with a 5-3 victory over Guiseley at Wembley Stadium. At the time, Pike was only 32 and was the youngest manager to win the FA Vase. Under his tutelage, the Magpies collected the Wessex League title on three separate occasions. With a lack of upward movement, Pike was appointed as co-manager at AFC Lymington in 2000 alongside Graham Kemp. Despite reaching the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup and finishing as runners-up in the Wessex League, the Board decided a change was needed that saw both Kemp and Pike move on. Alex took the hot seat for Dorset Premier League Hamworthy United in the summer of 2002. Promotion was secured in 2002-2003 and the Hammers won the Wessex League Cup in their first season with us. A managerial role at Gosport Borough was taken in 2005/06 that saw an FA Trophy Final appearance as perhaps the highlight of his time there, although perhaps a play off victory over Poole after extra time in 2011/12 to see Borough win promotion to the Southern League Premier Division for the first time since 1990 may trump that.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 04

There has been mention of the number of substitutions that can be used during a game, and can confirm there will be no change to the current practice of using THREE from a maximum of FIVE substitutes in our League and League Cup matches, clubs will have had this confirmed recently. Clubs will have been emailed by the League with a view to complete a Joint Study over opinions about the resumption of the game. This is for players and club officials to complete, but it is not a mandatory request. Any data collected for our League would be confidential to us. The organisers would prefer that Club Officials to complete the survey in collaboration with their colleagues, rather than as individuals. In terms of the players, we would like Clubs to encourage their players to complete the survey, but to keep it within house and we are not “advertising” the campaign on social media for that very reason. However, by participating in a joint study you have the option to share your results with other Leagues, potentially presenting a stronger case to the FA if you wish to raise any concerns about the practicality of their guidance. There is no deadline over completion but suggest keeping the survey open for at least the next two weeks. We hear that Hampshire County FA Cup Administrator Gary Pratt will be leaving service at the end of this month. He’s been involved there for over 13 years and am sure you would join me in wishing him well for the future.

FIXTURES Our Fixtures Secretary is still working on Division One for games after September, which will hopefully be issued shortly. He has had some late notifications of unavailability which always throws out fixture patterns - hopefully these are minor. Because of the late start there are more midweeks than normal which means some of the midweek fixtures involve greater travelling distances than is usual. One final point which applies principally to Division One. If your team is shown as spare, do not stand your players down unless the League release your club from a fixture. This is particularly relevant early in the season when F.A. Cup & Vase games are arranged at relatively short notice. As usual please let me know if you spot any discrepancies. So with great thanks to Roger Allen for his prompt actions, here are the September fixtures across the League and those for the Premier Division until the end of the year. Please also note that these are subject to change at short notice, especially given the new FA competitions for the coming season. WEEK 4 ROUND UP At time of going to Press we have yet to receive information appertaining to both the FA Cup and FA Vase for next season, including details about the draw for the opening rounds in both- the road to Wembley starts here at the beginning of September, subject to guidance procedures being in place. Our league campaign is also under the strict guidance procedures that have been laid down and likely to be in place for the start, Club Secretaries are reminded to keep up to date with the practices required to enable the campaign to get under way. Thanks to all concerned at this rather difficult time.
