Course Title: Socio-Anthro: Sociology – Anthropology with Family Planning
Course Description:Sociology – Anthropology combines two major disciplines in the field of Social Science. It studies about the development and growth of human societies and the interactions that take place between and among members of societies. It tackles the development of Sociological and Anthropological studies and the major contributions to its enrichment by different Anthropologists and Sociologists in the areas of Culture, Socialization, Social Group and Organizations, Deviance and Social Order, Collective Behavior and Social Change with emphasis on Urban Development. It put emphasis to the role and significance of the Family in the Philippine Society by dealing with the classifications, types, issues and problems faced by the Filipino Family in the changing world.
Course Objectives: At the end of the course, the students are expected to:
1. Develop the interest, concomitant rationale and insights in the study of Sociology and Anthropology; 2. Provide students with better understanding of social phenomena through the study of culture and related
topics such as Socialization, Deviance, Groups and Human Society and Social Change;3. Create among students a relativistic understanding of cultural diversity by providing insights to cultural
practices of different peoples to foster peace and tolerance;4. Strengthen student’s attachment to the Family as a major component and microcosm of the Filipino society
by putting emphasis on the role of families in creating responsible individuals and better citizens;5. Encourage the affinity to protect Filipino Families by discussing major problems and issues affecting the
familial relationships and the factors that contribute to its break-up;6. Present major issues on Filipino Values that might and could affect the social development of the Philippine
Society.
Course Outline:
Overview of Anthropology: Definition of Anthropology, Major Branches and Sub-branches of Anthropology.Contribution to the development of anthropology: Structural Functionalism, Cultural Materialism, Neo Evolutionism & Postmodernism.Culture: Nature and Definition of Culture, Characteristics of Culture, Cultural Systems and Elements of Culture, Levels of Culture and Approaches to Culture.Marriage and Family: Types and Classification of the Family, Kinship Patterns, Patterns of Authority, Marital Relationships, Issues in the Family, Filipino Values.
First Preliminary Examination
Overview of sociology: History and Development of Sociology, Development of Sociology in the Philippines.Contributions of Classical Sociologists & Sociological Perspectives.Socialization: Agents of Socialization, Psychological Theoretical Background, Sociological Approach to Socialization.Deviance: Theories of Deviance: Structural-Functionalism, Symbolic Interactionist Perspective, Conflict Perpective
Midterm Examination
Social Groups: In-group and Out-group, Reference Groups.Formal Organizations & Bureaucracy.Collective Behavior: Phenomena and Meaning of Collective Behavior, Theories Explaining Collective Behavior.Social Movements: Theories that Explain Social Movements.Social Change, Urbanization and Modernization. Problems faced By Urban Centers.
Final ExaminationCourse Requirements: Quizzes, Recitation, Assignments, Presentations, major Examinations.Grading: Class Standing (CS) = [Quizzes (50%) + Recitation (30%) + Assignments (20%)] / 3
