Town council discuss additional census questionsby Stuart Fullarton

Sylvan Lake town councillors were recently given the chance to propose supplementary questions for the 2013 Municipal Census.

The opportunity for sugges-tions arose at council’s Jan. 28 meeting, and resulted in a number ideas being put forth for adminis-tration to consider.

Coun. Dale Plante spoke in support of the supplementary questions, and felt they could be useful in gathering information

pertaining to economic develop-ment, and to find out the “poten-tial businesses people would like to see and would be supported by the residents of Sylvan Lake.”

“It’s amazing how that tool could be something that we could use to attract businesses that are actually desirable in the commu-nity,” he said.

Coun. Rick Grimson and Coun. Plante suggested that one of the supplementary questions focus on recreational facilities, such as the proposed new multi-plex.

“We’re obviously looking right

now at additional recreational facilities in general in terms of what’s needed here in town, and that’s a really big issue for us,” said Plante.

Administration recommended there be a maximum of three sup-plementary questions on the cen-sus, to prevent it from becoming excessive in length. In an effort to obtain the most accurate informa-tion possible, questions will not be open-ended.

Prior to the Jan. 28 council meeting, senior staff made sug-gestions for the supplementary questions, and identified a num-

ber of potential topics, including environmental concerns, infor-mation on communication from the town, and participation in waste and recycling programs.

But Coun. Sean McIntyre felt some of the staff ’s suggested ques-tions may be answered without having them on the census.

“We’re using contractors for the sake of the yard waste, for instance. We might be able to ask them how many households are actually participating. That data might be able to be collected by the people actually collecting that material.

“If we’re looking at only includ-ing three questions, we might be able to already cover our bases.”

McIntyre added that he would like to see one of the questions focus on the addition of beach sand above the sea wall.

“I think it’s something that’s absolutely worth putting out to the public,” he said.

Executive assistant Marilee Littmann said Administration would take all of the councillors’ suggestions into consideration and return to council with a draft of the questions before they are adopted.

Man stabbed during fi shing trip

A weekend fishing trip turned ugly after a brawl broke out inside an ice fishing hut on Sylvan Lake Saturday morning resulting in one man being stabbed and requiring several stitches.

Cpl. Kevin Halwa of the Sylvan Lake RCMP said 28-year-old Casey Kristopher Staple of Three Hills is facing several charges as a result of the Jan. 26 stabbing.

Kristopher, who was taken into custody along with a female also at the scene has been released and is to

appear in Red Deer Provincial Court, Feb. 8 to face charges of aggravated assault and failing to comply with a recognizance. The female was released without charges.

Halwa said the fight broke out inside the hut after the two men had returned from a night of drinking. However, he said the motive for the stabbing is unknown.

He said a knife believed to have been used in the assault has been recovered from under the ice.

When the police arrived at the hut at around 3 a.m. the victim had already been taken to Red Deer Regional Hospital by a friend who was at a nearby fishing hut.

RCMP shut down party in countySaturday, Jan. 19th

1:28 a.m. RCMP shut down a large outdoor party in Red Deer County. A complainant was passed by two vehi-cles on Highway 11A traveling at a very high rate of speed and fol-lowed them to a large party at the end of Range Road 23. Police were called and they poured out the liquor at the site and a large bonfire was extin-guished. A male at the party was also charged with a liquor offence.

2.30 p.m. An intox-icated male received a surprise when he walked into the wrong residence on 49th Avenue in Sylvan Lake. The male entered into the residence through the front door and the male homeowner jumped on him from behind, crashing him into an end table, and punching him. The

intoxicated male ran out the house and down the street. Residents are being asked to keep their doors locked as intoxi-cated persons have been known to enter into the wrong resi-dence, especially along the lakefront area.

7.30 am. Police attended the Lost Harbour Inn in Sylvan Lake to offer front desk staff some assistance after a male customer refused to pay his pill. The male was intoxi-cated but was coopera-tive with police and agreed to pay his bill, whereby it was discov-ered that he did not have any working cred-it or debit cards. He was arrested for breach of the peace and was

transported to cells until sober.

10.10 p.m. A male is facing a charge of assault in connection with a domestic dispute on

Fawn Close in Sylvan Lake. A female was attempting to convince her boyfriend not to drive back to their hotel while he was intoxicated. The male had been in a fight ear-lier with another male and wanted to drive her truck. When she refused and insisted on taking a cab, he punched her several times in the face with a closed fist and punched and kicked her in the groin area. The male returned to the resi-dence a short time later where he was arrested by RCMP.

vehicle had a snow covered license plate. As a result, a strong smell of marijuana was detected in the vehicle and the male driver admitted to possessing marijuana.

He was arrested at the scene and his vehi-cle was searched whereby a large quan-tity of marijuana and packing materials were located. The male is now charged with pos-session for the purpose of trafficking.

[email protected] What’s the plan to stabilize Alberta’s revenue?At some point, Albertans will

have to decide whether they are pro-gressive or conservative. This clash of political ideals wrapped up in Alberta’s ruling party seems to make sound, sensible governance impossi-ble.

When Alberta is awash in oil rev-enue, successive Progressive Conservative premiers have bowed to the pressure of their progressive ministers to spend and build. When the taps are tightened, these same premiers apply the brakes, cut pro-grams that were deemed necessary just a few years or an election ago and mull over raising taxes.

And then the boom and bust cycle repeats itself.

Premier Alison Redford gave a televised State of the Province address to try to explain to Henry and Martha why the government hasn’t a clue how to run the province. Instead of taking responsibility for spending waaay more than the gov-ernment takes in, Redford blamed the Americans for increasing their domestic oil production and lower-ing the price, thereby creating the $6-billion gap in revenues. She takes no responsibility for having no plan to diversify the Alberta economy or to rein in government spending.

The premieress has made her preference clear: she doesn’t want to see new taxes. But what if there is no other choice? Can she raise income taxes and user fees without appear-ing to break another year-old elec-tion promise? Higher taxation if nec-essary but not necessarily a sales tax?

When Alberta was flush with oil revenue from 2006-08 and had no plan for its spending or savings, the government unwisely eliminated $1 billion health care premiums. Is that how vital services such as health care, education and social assistance should be funded? Tied to the coat-tails of vagaries oil and gas royalties instead of the certainty of taxation?

This government went all-in last year, betting on high oil royalties to wipe out its $886-million deficit. But

lower oil prices and the so-called “bitumen bubble” have instead led to a shortfall and what is now projected to be a deficit of more than $3 bil-lion. With a B. As in B.S.

The government is pushing this difference in price between Alberta’s bitumen and West Texas Intermediate crude as some new, unforeseen phe-nomenon. It’s been around as long as the dinosaurs in cabinet. Finance ministers didn’t bring up the price difference six or seven years ago when the spread was larger but Alberta had a surplus of billions to

squander. How does Alberta get off this eco-

nomic roller coaster? There is no easy way to claw back spending on politically popular programs and services when the economy takes a dip — and hope to get re-elected. Is a sales tax the answer to stabilizing provincial revenue? How about a harmonized sales tax and reducing income taxes? Would that affect Alberta’s perceived tax advantage? Would a sales tax and reduced cor-porate taxes spark the economy? If we’re all taking home more money would we mind paying a sales tax?

If a sales tax can be sold to Albertans as means to even out the dips in the roller coaster, it must be coupled with reforms to runaway government spending.

And that would mean breaking or delaying billions in election promises to special interest groups, school boards and municipalities.

The Redford government will present its $40-billion —give or take a billion —2013-14 budget sometime in March. And it may take the next six weeks for cabinet to decide whether we are in for another round of Kleinian-style spending cuts, bor-rowing to fund capital projects, cre-ation of a new savings plan, corpo-rate tax hikes or some combination.

But more than likely this govern-ment will spend whatever savings we have left and once again tie its suc-cess to higher energy prices.

Adding more traffic to 50th Ave. not a solution

Dear Editor,After reviewing

both recent letters, from Craig Little & Michael O’Hanlon, I offer these insights.

50th Avenue is the the second busiest road in Sylvan Lake. We live on 50th and

watch the speed demons pass by our home sometimes in excess of 100 kilome-tres per hour.

Most average around 45-50-60 kilo-metres day or night. I can provide a list of commercial vehicles including Town of Sylvan vehicles that speed excessively.

50th Avenue is not

very well lit, in fact a pedestrian was acci-dentally killed by an RCMP vehicle because of poor lighting and the fact that the sidewalks had not been cleared. He was walking on the road.

Screeching tires, black tire marks, loud vehicle mufflers and bigger trucks are all safety issues. There is very little adherence to the posted speed.

As the north side-walk across our street is not cleaned by the town, there is no safe walking across 50th Avenue to walk to the park.

It must also be noted

that the town is not clearing the snow by Centennial Park and the lake. Not safe for people walking.

The raised bumps problem is not a prob-lem if drivers drove the speed limit!

Adding more traffic in the way of cars, trucks, trailers, motorhomes and RV’s down 50th is not a solution.

Our council needs to be fiscally prudent. If adding additional asphalt to the roadway solves that problem — problem solved, and it can done in a very short time without much interruption —

ready in time for tour-ism, at a much reduced costs to the taxpayers.

50th Avenue needs to have more traffic enforcement by Bylaws and RCMP. It is dan-gerous trying to walk across the road.

Maybe we should have speed bumps installed, or a traffic light, or lit pedestrian crosswalks with flash-ing yellow lights on 50th.

Either way, a quick review must be com-pleted ASAP — and make the right choices for all.

No problems for non-speeding motoristsDear Editor,

In his letter (‘Drive the speed limit and bumps not a problem’; January 24) Michael O’Hanlon suggests that victims of the ill-con-ceived and constructed speed bumps on Lakeshore Drive, euphemistically called ‘raised intersections,’ are responsible for

their own misfortune. If motorists didn’t speed they wouldn’t have problems. Since most people occasion-ally speed Mr. O’Hanlon’s solution is to have police enforce speed limits. In all this Mr. O’Hanlon is focus-ing on symptoms rath-er than root issues.

There are conceptu-

al and practical design problems on Lakeshore Drive. The bumps serve no practical pur-pose other than force traffic off Lakeshore Drive. Their bloated configuration is visual-ly unattractive. The raised design makes the approach from cot-tage area streets steeper and turns onto

Lakeshore Drive more difficult and danger-ous. Snowplowing is more difficult.

Some bumps can be traversed at the posted 30 km/h although not necessarily comfort-ably; on others travel-ing more than 20 km/h is to risk slamming the front of one’s car on the pavement. Visitors nat-urally assume they can go the posted 30 km/h and are surprised at the sharp slopes on the gentlest bumps and appalled and probably enraged at the violence of the worst of them. The irony of redevel-opment is that the joy of driving into town

along the lake has been all but destroyed.

Pushing more traf-fic onto 50 Avenue is a poor solution if it depends on Municipal Enforcement (ME) actually enforcing speed limits on either route. 50th Avenue has become a virtual speedway with many motorists traveling an estimated 50-60 km/h with occasional mis-creants apparently reaching near-highway speeds.

Protesting speeding problems to ME, the Mayor and Town Council is fruitless, in my case eliciting reports and ‘statistics’

obviously intended confuse and frustrate inquiries rather than shed light. Examples include tables of speed averages comprised of other averages, data with entire sections missing and glaringly contradictory state-ments and conclusions. One can only conclude that Town Council refuses to enforce 50 Avenue speed limits as a matter of policy. One is more likely to see police hassling tourists for petty offences in Centennial Park park-ing lots than enforcing speed limits on busy streets.

Mr. O’Hanlon sug-

gests that enforcing the Lakeshore Drive speed limit would make it safer for those now obliged to walk to the beach from 50th Avenue. One wonders which beach he has in mind given that high lake water levels have claimed all of them.

Town Council has acknowledged flawed bump design/con-struction and to its credit has pledged to correct it. Let them get at it at regardless of costs!

Give residents a Centennial giftDear Editor,

This is to all who Celebrate Sylvan Lake’s Centennial.

I quite like the idea that main street is now Centennial Street (especially because it

was never actually main street, but 50 Street). Kudos to the town for putting that

name in place! In celebration of

this, I also think we should now open Centennial Street all the way south to Hwy. 54 the way it has been for most of these 100 years.

I have heard stories of my husband’s grand-father bringing butter to town for sale back in the ’30s and ’40s, com-ing straight north on “Centennial Street” (Hwy. 781) from three miles south all the way downtown. He wouldn’t be able to do that on the current road, he’d have to go about six miles out of his way to accom-plish that. Of course, there wouldn’t be much downtown to go to, as closing the road has also impacted our downtown’s viability.

Perhaps, to celebrate our centennial year, we could open the inter-section of 11 and 781 (Centennial St.) and help our out downtown as well as our southern and western neigh-bours.

We need traffic lights or a roundabout there, not concrete bar-riers and restrictions. Province, town, are you listening to us? This is a centennial year for our town, here is a gift you can give the residents!

Alberta should increase taxes to create more reliable revenue sourcesDear Editor,

Unlike Peter Lougheed, Alison Redford will not leave a legacy for Albertans.

Peter Lougheed said in 2011 that Alberta should raise taxes to avoid debt.

Alberta is in more serious financial trou-ble than ever but the Redford government refuses to consider any tax increases.

It has been 26 years since taxes rose in Alberta only to be reduced shortly after. Ralph Kein’s 10 per cent flat tax of 2001 reduced tax revenue by $1.5 billion in that year alone. According to the Parkland Institute, it is estimated that today a modest progressive income tax could raise $5 billion. Flat taxes are a rarity in the world. Alberta is the only province with one. Even Warren Buffet supports progressive

taxation. He is quoted as asking why should he pay the same rate of taxation as his secre-tary.

Alberta needs a secure source of income other than relying on the ups and downs of bitumen pric-es. Our population is growing rapidly requir-ing more spending on education, healthcare, social problems, and infrastructure.

We have maintained our sales tax free status by raiding our Heritage Fund and now our Sustainability Fund. Now we are projected to run a huge deficit. The per capita market value of our Heritage Fund has declined from $1,162 in 1976 to $1,087 in 2010. The OECD has criticized Alberta for drawing down the Sustainability Fund from $16.8 bil-lion in 2010 to $2.3 bil-lion today.

A five per cent sales tax may be the best answer to increasing revenue.

A tax at this rate could generate approx-imately $5 billion per year. Like a progressive tax, it would be fairer. The more you buy the more you pay in tax. Unlike income tax the consumer would have more control over his or her money.

Increasing SIN taxes could also raise reve-nue. Those who cost our economy billions

of dollars by smoking, gambling, drinking, eating junk food, etc. should help alleviate the costs. Remember, Ed Stelmack inceased the liquor tax for a few short days and then changed his mind — strange!

Why not a two per cent increase in corpo-ration taxes? Bring back our medicare pre-miums. What about increased fuel taxes or a carbon tax? And, our portion of oil revenues has declined from 40

per cent under Peter Lougheed to nine per cent today.

Most Albertans can afford to pay more taxes. Alberta is the richest province in Canada. Alberta has the highest GDP per capita and the highest disposable income per capita in Canada.

Alberta needs a sta-ble and reliable source of revenue and that will not be found in bitu-men.

Premier Redford will have my vote if her government reforms Alberta’s tax system, sets funds aside for future generations, and adequately funds our

present needs to acceptable standards. Raising taxes does not mean our government should spend careless-ly. Cost cutting and prudent spending are still vritues. Premier Redford still has time to establish her legacy.

Blame the government for unlucky penniesI had a really, really bad day

Wednesday, which I blame totally on the government.

At the risk of sounding like my dearly departed father, who used to blame the weather, the condition of the roads, the loss of his favorite hockey

team, the price of sugar, gas and coal on those unseen bad guys who ran our country, I’m sticking with that theory.

“Damn government,” I muttered when I discovered my car battery had zero life. And later, it seemed to make perfect sense that the government was responsible for the gale force

winds, the icy roads and the guy that almost rear ended me because of all of the above.

Being a reasonable person, I wouldn’t have blamed the govern-ment for all the ills in my life, if it weren’t for the penny.

I found a lucky penny in my driveway. The reason I know it was lucky is it was facing heads up, a clear sign that lady luck was smil-ing at me.

I picked the penny up, rubbing my mittened hand across its sur-face just to double check it was facing the right way and stuck it in my pocket confidently. I even sang a few bars of some kind of happy song, just under my breath, of course, so the neighbors couldn’t hear me and think to themselves, “weird, she is really weird.”

But, despite the lucky penny find, it turned out my luck ran out before it even got started that day, as things seemed to go from bad to worse so I, in my misery, turned into my dad and blamed the gov-

ernment and immediately felt bet-ter. No wonder my penny wasn’t lucky, the government has totally changed the rules about them.

They are not even being made anymore. No doubt, any sentimen-tal ritual about finding them is nil and void, as well.

I self righteously toss my lucky penny back into the snow bank and decide to make better use of my luck by purchasing a lotto tick-et.

In reality the government’s plan to phase out the penny is probably a good one. And, it seems charities the world over are coming up with ways to make good use of all those pennies that take up space in our wallets, on our dressers and in large Texas Mickey bottles hidden in the corner of the bedroom.

Yes, it’s good to get rid of the penny, but, as with anything that is no longer there, its demise brings certain nostalgia.

I remember looking at my sister standing under the glare from a bare light bulb in her living room.

“Your hair shines like a new penny,” I said, admiringly.

And I remember the general store of my childhood. It, too, had bare light bulbs and oiled floors and, spread out, in tempting dis-play, on its counter, was an assort-

ment of candy, most of which could be purchased for a penny, which I usually had stuck in my grubby little hand. There were suckers that were all the colors of the rainbow and jawbreakers and bubble gum and, best of all, these little black candies we innocently called nigger babies. They were three for a penny, so if you had two pennies you were very rich, indeed.

The store is gone now, existing only in the yellowed, dog-eared pages of my memories along with party telephone lines and my sis-ter’s beautiful copper coloured hair.

And, now the penny, that hum-ble coin that made kids like me feel rich in days gone by, is to go by the wayside as well.

I sigh and think about the way we were and then I think about that Texas Mickey bottle full of pennies I have.

It is so heavy I can hardly lift it. I decide we must have been col-lecting pennies, ever since we were very, very young and had aspira-tions that one day, we would use these pennies to buy a new car or put a kid through university.

Well, that’s not going to hap-pen.

Damn government!

Every year, I observe with uttermost attention the changing season of the year. This change in weather and vegetation always fills me with awe and amazement. What makes me wonder is not only the varieties but more specifically the great harmony in nature. One season starts and ends with a gradual handover to the next. From Spring, Summer, Fall to Winter. Each has its distinctive characteristics and peculiar-ities, etc all work to sustain the existence and harmony on the planet. This reminds me of the philosophy of unity in divers-ity, where the different divergent entities come together for the good of all. St. Paul, the Apostle in 1Cor. 12:4-11, recounted the various gifts of the Holy Spirit that are geared toward a common goal – The good of all. He wrote:

‘There are many different gifts, but it is always the same spirit; there are many different ways of serving, but it is

always the same Lord. There are many different forms of activity, but in everybody it is the same God who is at work in them all. The particular manifestation of the Spirit granted to each one is to be used for the general good’ (1 Cor. 12:4-7)

As this New Year 2013, has kicked off, we, as individuals and community have milestones and goals to reach. We may not reach the utmost of these goals without the help of others. Let each individual, family, office, church, school, business etc. in our community know that we, though different and with divergent opinions have something to offer for the good and wellbeing of all in Sylvan Lake. We are so blessed with var-ied and divergent gifts which God wants us to use for the good of all.

Therefore, if you are a steward, serve as if it the Lord Jesus you are serving. If you’re a teacher, teach to the glory of God. If you’re a leader or a politician or a business owner, work with the love of God. Put your gifts and talents to the service of all in the community. By doing this, this year, all glory and honor will ever belong to our God. His blessings will be upon us and our community.

Sylvan Lake’s mayor and councillors deserve a raise.

That’s the opinion expressed by Jordan Sinclair when he spoke at town council’s open microphone session before the regular meeting Jan. 14.

Describing Sylvan Lake as a “great, great town” and a “phe-nomenal place to live”, he thanked council and the mayor “for all they do”.

“I think you’re way under-paid for what you do,” he con-tinued.

Based on the town’s 2011 financial statement, Mayor Susan Samson made $25,941 in salary and received benefits and allowances of $12,970 for a total of $38,911. Councillor Graham

Parsons received the lowest sal-ary at $10,553 with benefits and allowances of $5,276 for a total of $15,829. Councillor Laverne Asselstine was highest at a sala-ry of $13,340 with benefits and allowances of $6,670 for a total of $20,010.

(Benefits and allowances includes employer’s share of all benefits and contributions or payments made on behalf of employees including pension, health care, dental coverage, vision coverage, group life insurance, accidental disability and dismemberment insurance and long and short-term dis-ability plans, states a note in the financial statement.)

Sinclair estimated that based on the salaries and time which is likely spent to do their jobs, the mayor makes about $20 an

hour and councillors make about $15 an hour.

“Sylvan Lake is lucky to have people living in the area forever who are willing to do the jobs you do,” said Sinclair.

“You all deserve a raise. From where I stand, the lowest paid employees of the town are the mayor and council.”

Samson thanked him for his comments and noted council has a policy which states that in the year of an election (which is this year) an independent com-mittee is appointed to review the pay scale for council and make recommendations back to council.

Then a decision can be made prior to the election, to take effect when a new council is elected.

Trained in South Africa, he spent a lot of time working in the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Capetown, in his hometown of Kimberley, South Africa, and “a whole lot of different cities”, he said.

He and his wife moved to Canada in 2005 where he started practicing in Drayton Valley.

Then when his wife, an architect, got a job in Red Deer they moved there where he’s worked for the past six years.

Begley is in general practice here and wel-comes new patients. He’ll also be involved in obstetrics.

He and his wife have two boys, one four years old and the other 14 months old.

Asked about hobbies, Begley said he golfs and enjoys LPs on his old school sound system.

His musical tastes range to just about anything but he particularly enjoys rock and rock and clas-sical.

“I’m enjoying Canada,” he said. “I’ve become quite a hockey fan, an Oiler at heart, and will hoot for the Flames if they’re playing any of the American teams. I haven’t really gotten into foot-ball yet, but at least the (San Francisco) 49ers are in the Super Bowl, that’s nice.”

Lacombe County Council has given first reading to Bylaw No. 1172/13 and Bylaw No. 1173/13, the purpose of which are to amend the general regulations and policies in both the County’s Land Use Bylaw and Municipal Development Plan. Three more Sylvan

Lake area residents are among those who have been presented with Queen Elizabeth II

Diamond Jubilee Medals.

The medals were created to mark the

2012 celebration of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada, according to the website of Governor General David Johnston’s. The medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour significant contribu-tions and achievements by 60,000 deserving Canadians.

Allan Cameron, was the most recent recipi-ent, receiving his medal during a ceremony at Government House last Tuesday.

The citation read during presentation of

Cameron’s medal by Alberta Lieutenant Governor Donald S. Ethell, stated: “Allan Cameron travels across Canada with a video recorder and camera, documenting the per-sonal war memories, pictures and docu-ments of over 500 Canadian Veterans from the Korean and Second World Wars to provide invaluable preservation of this his-tory.”

He’s the founding executive director and producer for Veterans Voices of Canada (for-merly Memories Recovered Project). In

late 2005 he pursued his dream to meet, interview and docu-ment Canadian mili-tary veterans for histo-ry and education pur-poses.

At a ceremony Nov. 30 in Calgary, the list of recipients included Darwin Durnie of Sylvan Lake. He was among 131 recipients from across the prov-ince and various walks of life to receive the medal at a ceremony presided over by Lieutenant Governor Donald S. Ethell and reception with Premier Alison Redford. All the recipients were chosen

by Redford.“It was an honour to

acknowledge the achievements of these giving Albertans,” she said in a news release. “From firefighters to police officers to psy-chologists to front line youth workers, advo-cates and artists, each recipient had an inspir-ing story and their devotion to their com-munity is truly hum-bling. These men and women represent the f o r w a r d - t h i n k i n g , compassionate and car-ing spirit that Alberta and Albertans are known for.”

Durnie’s presentation stated: Darwin has been an active vol-unteer in Alberta and Drumheller for 30 years. He helped build the Drumheller Ski Hill and Waterpark and pio-neered a program for Public Works Employees in Alberta that has been adopted by the American Public Works Association. Darwin returned to his hometown during the floods of June 2005 and led a response team to prevent flooding to 1,000 homes. As president for the Canadian Public Works Association, Darwin continues to be an advocate for Alberta.”

The third recipient from the Sylvan Lake area is RCMP Sgt. Michael Numan who lives west of town and is currently the operations NCO at the Rocky Mountain House detachment.

He was presented with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal on Sept. 12 in the West Edmonton Mall ballroom by Lieutenant Governor Donald

S. Ethell along with 300 RCMP members and employees from across the province.

The recipients had been nominated to receive one of the medals, which are meant to rec-ognize a significant achievement or distinguished service to fel-low citizens.

“I am proud of the members and employees of the RCMP who received this most presti-gious recognition from His Honour, the Lieutenant Governor, on behalf of our hon-orary commissioner, Her Majesty the Queen,” RCMP Chief Superintendent Marlin Degrand was quoted in a Grande Prairie Daily Herald-Tribune story about the event. “Every day I see examples of the dedica-tion, sacrifice and professional-ism of our employees in Alberta. I am pleased to see this recogni-tion of some of the many exem-plary and deserving people within the RCMP who contrib-ute, day in and day out, to the betterment of their communities and the safety and security of

their fellow citizens. Nationally the RCMP was

given an allotment of 2,300 Diamond Jubilee medals for reg-ular and civilian members, and 64 medals for RCMP auxiliary constables.

Shown are a pair of pictures from William Smith (a resident since 1953), who received them from his old friend, Shirley Martin of Sidney, B.C.

Her father, Johnny Martin, was the Alberta Pacific Grain (later Federal Grain) elevator agent in Sylvan from the 1950s to the 1970s. One photo was taken from the corner of 47th Avenue and 52nd Street looking west in approximately 1960.

“Note the street lamp style, wild daisies along the sidewalk and the string of old box cars at the elevator,” wrote Smith.

The other photo was taken in the early 1950s looking eastbound. Around the bend was the CPR station. The main elevator was constructed in 1922 with the annexes added later.

“The grand old sentinel was demolished in 1976, with the entire CPR line being abandoned and torn up three years later. For those who are unfamiliar, it stood on the large open mound, down 47th Avenue west. Smith wrote,

“It would be nice to see a few pho-tos on plaques along the green space trail of the old station and grain ele-vator with its stockyard. Just a note, our CPR line was one of the very last branch lines in Canada to use steam motive power, not giving way to the diesel locomotive until 1960.

As a little boy, I will always remember the ‘hay burners’ going by our house at 5111 47 Avenue. In closing, it was Johnny Martin, along with the section guys, Nick

Komarnicki and Charlie Hainsworth, who instilled in me, my unyielding and gargantuan appetite for anything ‘trains & railroading’.”

Sylvan Lake is home to a lot of outstanding residents who commit their spare time and talents to a number of various causes.

And each year, to celebrate National Volunteer Week, Sylvan Lake’s Volunteer Centre hosts the Volunteer Impact Awards Gala to recognize some of those people.

Residents are now being asked to nomi-nate people who they believe are exceptional volunteers in their community.

The gala awards salute inspiring indi-viduals, organizations and businesses for their

extraordinary contri-butions and accom-plishments within Sylvan Lake and area.

The deadline for nominations is Apr. 15.

This year the spec-tacular awards evening will take place Apr. 26 from 5:30-10:30 p.m. at the community centre and feature dinner, entertainment and awards.

Sylvan Lake Volunteer Centre knows the importance of volunteers in the community and would like to dedicate this special evening to thanking all the people who contribute to mak-ing Sylvan Lake a great place to live in so many different ways.

On a night that was a break it or make it situation, the Sylvan

Lake Admirals couldn’t find the guns to main-tain third place in AAA Provincial standings and will end up in fourth.

The Admirals will

now wait for the AAA Provincial to begin in two weeks, immediate-ly following the Chinook League play-off.

The Admirals lost

last Friday nights’ game to the Stony Plain Eagles 4-1, which left the teams in a tie.

They were tied in more ways than one as the Admirals had won

the first two meetings and Stony Plain had won the last two.

The Admirals had scored 16 goals against Stony Plain and the Eagles had scored 17

against the Admirals. The Admirals, over

the season, had scored more goals than Stony Plain (53 vs 43) but have struggled all year with a shortage of man-

power on the D side, having to play with for-wards doing their best to fill in and D men sitting out with inju-ries.

Friday was no exception as Barrett Brook was taking no chances with a possible concussion and DJ Brough was nursing a sore back that hadn’t completely healed from last season.

The first period was a dead heat as both clubs were pushing hard to gain the advan-tage.

The Admirals scored first at 11:44 when Brendan Baumgartner got a solid feed from Travis McMillan to make it

The Eagles evened the score less than a minute later on a power play marker.

With 6:51 to go Stony Plain took a pen-alty and followed it up shortly after, to give the Admirals a 50 second 5 on 3 but the Eagles goaltender was equal to the task, keeping it tied at the end of the first.

The second period seemed to follow the Admirals luck for the season when the Eagles scored just 27 seconds into the frame and barely two seconds after the Admirals had battled off left overtime from a late first period penalty.

Despite being down a goal, the Admirals were pressing and keeping the pressure on. At about the 14 minute mark the Admirals scored to tie the game, but the goal was waived off as the Eagles goaltender kicked the net off while trying to stop the puck.

A controversial call but you can’t fight the boys in stripes and the score remained 2-1 Stony Plain.

After several near misses and big saves in the Eagles end, Stony Plain sprang a player loose with a long pass that had the Admirals D men skating hard to catch up to the play.

Admirals goaltender Calyn Relkoff made 3 stops and thought he had the puck under him when it squirted out from under his equipment and was left laying in the crease.

All Admirals defenders were on the right side of the net when a lone Eagles player found himself alone with the loose puck and barely a nudge was needed to make it 3-1 with 6:01 remaining in the sec-ond.

Despite out playing and out shooting the Eagles 17-12 the Admirals received no rewards for the effort and the period ended

3-1 Stony Plain. The third period

was tilted in Stonys’ favour as the Admirals seemed to have lost a little intensity and couldn’t seem to get things back in gear.

The Eagles tender was having the game of the year and all bounc-es were going the Eagles way. At 16:05 the Eagles scored to make it 4-1 and that was the final goal of the

game.“It was a game we

just needed to keep close,” commented Coach Jason Stephens.

“Had we lost 3-2, we’re in third and Stony is in fourth. It was that close. There’s not much to say, we miss the Chinook League play-offs but need to get ourselves ready for the AAA Provincial Championships that start mid February.

Some of our affiliates will be available for that and we hope to have some D men amongst them that will give some needed assistance to our current guys.”

Glenda passed away peacefully in her home at the Bethany Care Center in Sylvan Lake, AB on Tuesday, January 22, with her three daughters at her side.

Glenda was born on January 12, 1938 in Bentley, Alberta and raised on the family farm (Pierson) 1/2 mile east of Bentley.

Glenda attended and graduated from Reeves Business College in Red Deer, Alberta in 1957.

Glenda married Edward Pogadl on October 28, 1961, and together raised 3 daughters, Marlis, Marcine, and Monica while residing in Red Deer, Tees and Sylvan Lake.

Ed and Glenda celebrated 50 years of marriage before Ed’s passing in 2012.

Glenda always enjoyed working and spent her early years at the Red Deer Court House, Sylvan Lake News, and the UFA in Sylvan Lake. Glenda loved people and enjoyed any work that involved interaction with people.

Glenda loved music and played in the Ray Ferguson Band for many years. She was also a choir member and pianist at the Sylvan Lake Presbyterian Church for decades.

Glenda was very involved with all her daughter’s activities including Brownies, Girl Guides, and the Sylvan Lake Figure Skating Club.

Glenda was predeceased by her parents Donald and Allie Pierson; step father Nick Morris, and her husband Edward Pogadl.

She is survived by her three daughters Marlis (Brian) Hansen, Marcine (Thomas) Woyke, Monica (Scott) Sylvester; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; sister Mavis (Calvin) Huhtala and brother Donald (Doreen) Pierson.

Glenda’s life will be celebrated at the Sylvan Lake Alliance Church on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 1:00 P.M.

As an expression of sympathy memorial donations may be made in Glenda’s name to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada or the Bethany Care Society.

Literacy - Everyone had a terrific time at C. P. Blakely Elementary School’s family literacy night last Thursday evening. Students, along with their parents and siblings enjoyed playing games in the gathering area, perusing newly purchased books in the library, and topping off the evening with a hot chocolate and snack. Amazing - Sylvan Lake Cubs and Scouts joined groups from Red Deer, Blackfalds and Anders for an “amazing” sleep over at Reynolds-Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin Jan. 12-13. Over 60 people were involved between the four groups. Saturday evening they watched a movie on the life of Stan Reynolds and then made pancakes out of wheat that Reynolds grew and toured the tractors and cars. “We did a craft and set up for bed in the car gallery,” reported leader Cinzia Cappella. The youngsters slept beside the vehicles they liked best. Sunday morning they were up at 7 a.m. and museum staff prepared “a wonderful breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast and pancakes”. Then they learned how to make rope and butter. “The boys got to be hands on with some of the old equip-ment and they loved the challenge.” The tour ended in the aviation part of the museum. The Sylvan Lake group included eight Cubs, one Scout and four leaders. In the back row are, Baloo, Logan, AJ, Damien, Tristan, Bagheera, Jocylnn, and Akela; and in the front row are Kaleb, Joseph, Kaeden and Elijah. SUBMITTED
