Four adults displaced by a fire which ravaged a duplex Monday evening received support from the Canadian Red Cross.

Sylvan Lake firefighters were called to a fire in a duplex at 16 Westin Place about 8:10 p.m.

Monday and were on the scene for about three hours, reported Fire Chief Cliff Brausen.

With 21 firefighters battling the blaze, they were able to contain the fire to the side of the duplex where it began. There was major interior damage, he reported. The other side of the duplex received significant smoke damage.

at press time Tuesday afternoon.“Volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross

Personal Disaster Assistance Team provided accommodation to residents impacted by the fire,” according to a press release from the orga-nization.

The team is a group of dedicated volunteers, some from Sylvan Lake, who assist families and individuals with local disasters. The Canadian Red Cross provides food, shelter, clothing and additional services for 72 hours as needed to people affected by personal disaster.

The release stated, the average cost of a response in which a family of four is assisted is $2,000. All Canadian Red Cross support is pro-

vided at no charge to those in need. To donate to this locally funded program call 1-800-418-1111 or go online to www.redcross.ca.

Several Sylvan firefighters were busy earlier Monday morning, responding to a mutual assis-tance call at Bentley Hutterite Colony with their water tanker. Members were involved in assisting firefighters from Bentley and other areas for about three hours.

About 4,500 pigs died when fire swept through a hog barn. A second barn was saved from fire. About four dozen firefighters were on the scene at the peak of the action.

Lacombe, Blackfalds and Eckville fire depart-ments also assisted in fighting the fire.

Recycling has become a way of life for Sylvan Lakers who participate, through the town’s waste transfer site, in tire, electronics and paint programs.

Saturday, during Sylvan Customs and Classics show and shine at Meadowlands Golf Club, Alberta Recycling will be promoting services it partners with the town to offer to Albertans.

“We’re inviting residents and participants to stop by, pick up some promo-tional items and find out what happens to your old computer, scrap tires, or that can of paint you dropped off for recy-cling,” stated a news release from the organi-zation.

“Alberta’s tire, paint and electronics recycling programs play an impor-tant role in the day-to-day life of our town,” said John Watson, the town’s public works manager. “Not only do they help save valuable landfill space, the programs are a

reminder that Albertans have a commitment to the environment that is second-to-none.”

Sylvan Lake transfer station, one mile east of town off Highway 11A, has been accepting end-of-life com-puters, printers, monitors, scrap tires, and leftover paint for recycling since the programs began.

The tire recycling program began in 1992, elec-tronics in 2004 and paint in 2008. Through the pro-grams, Albertans have recycled 85 million tires, six million computers and TVs, 13 million litres of paint and two million spray paint cans.

69 years ago ...From the issue of July 4, 1945

The huge holiday crowd here for the Dominion Day holiday week-end was favoured with grand weather. A shower during Sunday night and a heavy rain (one-half inch) on Monday night followed two beautiful warm days of bright sunshine.

All the sports that are enjoyed here: golfing, tennis, boating, swimming and fishing were well patronized. Dancing at Varsity Hall and the Alexander pavilion was enjoyed, and restaurants had an unusually busy weekend. Prior to the holiday the beach was put into nice condition by the village public works department. There is a steady influx of visitors and it looks as if the Lake is in for a good season.

Forty-eight students displayed their talents at a recital held Saturday night in the Presbyterian Church Hall. Five teachers were represented: Mrs. Dave McCutcheon, Mrs. H. F. Player, Mrs. Warren Dunford, Mrs. Serge Andreef, and Mrs. Jack Hagerman. The audi-ence of parents and friends was also treated to a vocal solo by Carolyn Fietl.

Things are really starting to move up in that McMurray area. Premier

Manning and Mines Minister Russ Patrick took a quick flight up there Thursday, bounced over several miles of crude road near Mildred Lake and then gave a ceremonious “go-ahead” to Great Canadian Oil Sands $190 mil-lion wilderness plant.

Dear Editor,Every day I ride my bike around

town to see if there is anyone out-side who would like to hang out with me. I look near playgrounds in the afternoon — nobody is ever out there.

I always go to my friends’ houses but they are never outside. I always knock on their doors but they are too busy playing video games. And I’m sure that I’m not the only kid in Sylvan with the same problem.

During the school year, me and all my friends used to ride our bikes up and down the road. But ever since summer holidays have start-ed, I can never find them.

Whenever I go out, there are no

children in their yards. Just recently I knocked on my friend’s door. He and his brother were playing video games.

I was always told that when good weather comes along, take advan-tage of it. But whenever I do, nobody is outside.

Sincerely,Emily L.

Editor’s Note: We have a policy that we don’t print letters where writers don’t want their complete names published, however in this case, due to the obvious youth of our writer, we’ve made an exception.

Where are all the kids? Not outside despite good weather

Already six months of the year have flown by and for construction starts in Sylvan Lake, there’s been an increase of 23 per cent in value over last year.

The hottest sector appears to be multi-family units where permits have been issued for 83 units compared to just 16 in the same period a year ago.

June’s statistics, released by the town last Wednesday, showed another four units permit-ted in Windward Place. Others are under con-struction in Ryders Ridge.

Ten new single family homes were approved for construction, at a total value of $1.977 mil-lion. They brought the year-to-date total to 51 new homes started, compared to 56 in the first six months of 2013.

Four of the homes are located in Beacon Hill with the other six in Ryders Ridge. The construc-

tion values ranged from $164,975 to $264,170 with six under $200,000.

Overall, the total value of construction for which building permits were issued is at $25.555 million this year, a gain of $4.77 million over last year.

Other permits issued during June were for basement developments (9), detached garages (7), decks and deck modifications (6), secondary suites (4), a shed, hot tub and holiday trailer addition.

One industrial permit was issued for a shop addition on Industrial Drive, valued at $216,000.

Construction permits ahead of last year by 23 per cent

Sylvan Lake News is again an award winner in competition against its peers in the Alberta com-munity newspaper industry.

The newspaper placed second in the Community Service Award category during the

Community service award for News

Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association’s annual Award of Excellence competition. The catego-ry was open to all 120+ association members.

The award was presented for the “Our Caring Community” column which appeared regularly during Sylvan Lake’s Centennial year, 2013.

The inspiration of Editor Steve Dills, who carried the project through the year, the column was created to “quantify the generosity of our com-munity with information and a run-

ning tally of donations to various groups and organizations”. The year-end total was close to $500,000 although, we know there were prob-ably donations that were missed.

The award was presented at the association’s annual meeting in Calgary last month.

First place in the category was presented to Claresholm Local Press for its Christmas Hamper Program and third place went to the Brooks & County Chronicle for is Seniors Awards of Distinction.

During their regular meeting June 16, mem-bers of Sylvan Lake’s Municipal Planning Commission:

• approved a development permit for Cedo Modo Inc. to construct a third commercial build-ing in the neighbourhood shopping complex at the corner of Herder Drive and Hinshaw Drive where two buildings have already been construct-ed.

At the same time they approved relocation of a play area for the daycare facility to the centre of the site where a fourth building had previously been planned.

• approved a secondary (basement) suite for a home being built at 83 Reynolds Road.

• approved a subdivision application to create four residential lots on the northwest corner of 52nd Street and 50B Avenue. A demolition permit had previously been issued for buildings at that location.

Subdivision is proposed to allow for side-by-side duplexes, stated a report from Matthew Pawlow, planning manager with Parkland Community Planning Services.

A number of martial artists from Arashi-Do Sylvan Lake travelled to Edmonton for the Mind Body Soul Tournament June 22. This is one of the biggest tournaments of the year in Alberta, for BJJ and Muay Thai.

Over 400 competitors took part, from young kids, to the executives (ages 40+). The oldest was aged 56. Of course, having competitors from the school in Sylvan Lake is a great experi-ence and challenge.

Kyle Hebb, 24, competed in the Adult Muay Thai Beginner Division. Fighting two close fights, he ended up taking third place in that division.

First-time competitor Tokunbo Adeleke competed for the first time in BJJ. After training for about two years, he finally decided to test himself and compete. Fighting in the Executive Division (aged 35+, all experience lev-els), he started off winning his first match by points.

He then fought a blue belt, Tokunbo being a white belt, and lost by a sub-mission to the eventual second-place

finisher. He ended up winning the third-

place match against another white belt with an arm in guillotine. He was extremely proud of himself by com-pleting this and his coach, Sensei Ken Sumner, said, “I was super happy with TK (Tokunbo). He showed great and really put himself out there. He tested himself and it was something that many adults don’t do, but really should.”

Young, perennial competitor Nolan Smith, formerly of Drayton Valley, has moved his training to Sylvan Lake, where he is thriving. He competed in

Gi BJJ, in which he didn’t place, but he com-peted in NoGi BJJ, and ended up taking second place. His athleticism proved to be beneficial in this match.

He then competed in Muay Thai, and took second place. Unfortunately, overconfidence was his downfall in this final match at he didn’t take it seriously. Muay Thai is one of Nolan’s passions and something that he continues to do well in.

Five teams from Sylvan Lake competed in Alberta

Five Sylvan teams competed in provincial beach volleyball tourneyBeach Volleyball’s 3rd youth tourna-ment at the pier on the weekend.

The weather was absolutely perfect for beach volleyball. With great spon-sors, music playing and amazing par-ents and crowds there to cheer on the athletes, players couldn’t ask for a better atmosphere than right here in Sylvan Lake. Venues in Calgary and Edmonton, which have more courts, just can’t compare to right here at home, at the beach.

For the U18 teams we had Olivia Barnes with Makenna Barthel (of Red Deer) and Harper Elwood with Whitney Lehman (no results forward-ed). There were a total of 16 teams in this age group to provide some really good competition. The skill set is really incredible to watch at this age level,

very entertaining beach volleyball. In the U16 age group, Morgan

Lockyer and Erin Matthews played and had some really great games with really close scores but just couldn’t pull off the wins. There were 32 teams in this age group and their tournament was held over both Saturday and Sunday playing at total of six games. Saturday afternoon was really hot as we watched teams putting on socks, so as not to burn their feet in the sand.

The U14 girls enjoyed the weather and the competition. There were 20 teams entered in the category and the girls gained valuable experience as they competed against quality compe-tition. Hannah Lynn and Daria Kostiuk were teammates, while Kadey Rosie and Laila Watson teamed up. For both

of the Sylvan Lake U14 teams, it was their first beach volleyball competitive experience. The two young teams didn’t fare well in the win column but took a lot away from this weekend, learning the rules, watching other players tendencies and understand-ing more about their own skills which will help them in future tournaments

Good luck to any of the teams registered July 19 and 20th for the fourth youth tournament, again here in Sylvan Lake. The next tournament after that will be provincials in Calgary the August long weekend.

SPORTS

Time - Madison Hickey attempted to attain the fastest time in pole bending at Benalto Junior Rodeo last Friday. The junior rodeo preceded Benalto Pro Rodeo, which began later that evening. STUART FULLARTON

BY STUART FULLARTONSYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Benalto Pro Rodeo is showing no signs of slowing down, despite now heading into its 98th year.

With co-operative weather, a strong atten-dance and plenty of help from volunteers, this year’s 97th, which ran on the weekend, couldn’t have gone any better, according to rodeo man-ager John Bystrom.

“Weather is always the first thing,” he said. “If the weather co-operates, people come.”

Although final attendance numbers hadn’t been tallied at press time, Bystrom estimated them to be the event’s highest ever.

Entry numbers were also strong, and on par with previous years.

The rodeo weekend kicked off with the junior rodeo Friday, and ended Sunday after-noon.

While there were plenty of walk-in attend-ees, many chose to set up camp for the entire weekend.

“A lot of people do look forward to camping here,” said Bystrom. “That’s a large part of our whole weekend crowd.”

Saturday night’s rodeo performance was so well attended, there was “not a seat to be had, or a piece of grass” to sit on, he added.

The event is put on annually by Benalto Ag Society, with the help of various community groups and organizations such as Medicine River Pony Club, Shadow Riders 4-H Club and Benalto Booster Club.

“The ag society supports their groups, and in turn, they come and help give us some manpower at the rodeo, before, during and after,” said Bystrom.

Money raised through the rodeo is often put back into the community by the ag society.

This year should again prove successful in that regard, according to Bystrom.

“It looks like we had a really successful year,” he said. “We’ll be in the black, for sure.”

The rodeo has now been going strong since it was first held in 1917, and has been held annually ever since.

With the contin-ued support and ded-ication of volunteers,

Benalto Pro Rodeo a success in its 97th year

there’s no reason why it can’t con-tinue for years to come, Bystrom feels.

“(Volunteers are) the driving force behind any event like this,” he said. “We’ve got a really good group of people that work well together, and the dedication of volunteers is very apparent.”

Ensuring the rodeo remains fun for those volunteers is key to ensuring its continued longevity,

he added.“If it’s not fun for your volun-

teers to put on, it’s not worth doing. We’ve made it fun, and we still put on a quality rodeo.”

Unofficial results from the rodeo, as are available on the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association website at www.rode-ocanada.com/results.htm.

NIEMELAOn July 2, 2014 Ray (Aarne Raymond) Niemela passed away at the age of 94 years old. Ray is survived by his daughter, Dorinda (Ernie) Beskowiney and son, Terry (Marilyn) Niemela. He also leaves behind his grand- children: Bonnie (Nick) Parker, Trevor (Margot) Hietala, Karri-Lynn (Lance) Knudsen, Tracy (Duane) Guthrie, LeeAnn (Darren) Low, Kimberley (Martijn) Appel, AuKeeRa (Aaron) Low and step-grandchildren: Shawn (Kristie) Beskowiney, and Melonie

Beskowiney. He also leaves several great-grandchildren and many close family and friends. One of Ray’s greatest joys in life was spending time with his family and friends. He looked forward to the conversations and many visits while sharing his “happy juice”. His inspiring and generous soul had a way of lifting the spirits of anyone he met. Ray always had a zest or life and a love for farming. Ray took great pride in the family farm. He enjoyed hearing about the every day operations and took joy in watching the farm continue to grow. One of Ray’s greatest accomplishments in life was to see all of his grandchildren get married and to see his great-grandchildren take their fi rst step. He loved sharing with them his charm, humour, laughter and stories on how to live a long, happy life. Ray enjoyed travelling to many places across the world where he gained several dear friends. In the early years, while spending time with Edith as “Snow Birds” in Arizona, Ray and Edie met life-long friends, Norman and Violet Jones. After the passing of Edith and Norman, Ray and Violet married and decided to live the rest of their lives together. Ray adopted his “American” family and cherished many special memories with them. Ray will be deeply and sadly missed by all the lives that he touched. His legacy will remain in our hearts forever. Funeral services will be held at the Eckville Community Center on July 16th, 2014 at 11am. A private family internment will follow at Alto Rest Memorial Gardens Red Deer. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Kannawin, Box 9240, Sylvan Lake, Alberta T4S 1S8.

We’re Losing ControlOne of the richest corporations in the United States has made a

bid to buy the electricity grid that serves 85% of Albertans

The pending sale of AltaLink to Berkshire Hathaway has serious consequences for the province we call home

• Loss of control of our critical infrastructure

• Regulation oversight stops at the border

• Potential for more power exports

If you think the Province and the Federal Government should conduct a policy review to determine who should own the

infrastructure at the heart of Alberta’s prosperity, make your voice heard.

REMAXSYLVANLAKE.COM®

Sales in June in Sylvan Lake came back down to normal while the number of active listings increased, bringing the market back into balance from one where sellers briefl y had the advantage.

The sales to listing ratio at 23.4% is probably closer to 30% when considering just the Town of Sylvan Lake. Our calculations include the summer villages around the lake where sales are slower for the higher priced homes there.

The price range that has been the most active ($250,000 – $350,000) actually slowed a little in June while the number of listings increased, providing an

opportunity for buyers in that price range. The $350,000 – $450,000 price range is the one where sellers may still have a bit of an advantage.

The strong market we have experienced this year is the result of a strong economy that creates lots of jobs and encourages migration from the rest of Canada and the world. Population growth creates demand for new construction which is in itself an economic driver. In 2013 Alberta’s population grew by 3.25%, the fastest in Canada by double.

Call us for detailed market information for Sylvan Lake, Red Deer, Blackfalds, Lacombe or Ponoka.
