PARISH LIFE

DID YOU KNOW?

Practice situational awareness as part of your holiday travel plans At Christmastime, families come together to spend this blessed season surrounded by their loved ones, and for many families, this involves some travel. Parents with young children who are hitting the roads or the airways should be practicing situational awareness to ensure their children’s safety. Situational aware-ness means staying alert and knowing what is going on around you. Keep an eye out for suspicious activity, and know where your family members are at all times. Do not allow yourself to become distracted by your phone or other electronics—it only takes a minute for a child to disappear from your eyesight. For more holiday travel tips, visit http://www.catholic.org/travel/story.php?id=65521.

H.O.P.E Store

St. Vincent de Paul is excited to announce our 3rd annual H.O.P.E Store (Helping Others Provide Enough). This annual event assists Lompoc families in need by providing the blessing of being able to provide Christ-mas presents for their children! This could not be possible with-out the generous donations of local businesses and the communi-ty. We ask for your help to make this another successful year by donating an unwrapped new toy.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call (805) 735-3068 ext. 45. Feel free to leave a message and one of our members will call you back.

2018 CATHOLIC CALENDARS

Available now in the vestibule. Please place your $1 donation per calendar in the Poor

Box located next to the counter .

FIVE MINUTES WITH THE WORD MAGAZINE

We have the Five Minutes with the Word magazines available to you. We encourage you to take a few minutes a day, and use this handy magazine to grow closer to the Lord before Christmas. Free copies are provided by the parish. You will find them in the back vestibule of the church.

Monday Night Adult Group

We are pleased to announce our next study! Wisdom: God's Plan for Life will begin Monday, January 8, 2018, at 7 p.m. in the Parish Hall. This 7-week DVD study is hosted by Jeff Cavins & Thomas Smith.

Drawing on the wisdom literature of the Bible—Proverbs, Wisdom, Sirach, and Ecclesiastes—Wisdom will teach you how to actively seek out sound guidance and increase your sense of peace in navigating life. In every-thing from friendships to finances, from making decisions to attaining peace of mind, Scripture offers a vision for happiness and well-being. With this program, you will learn how to gather, gain, and grow in wisdom, and you will experience the joy it brings to your life.

There is no cost to attend, however we encourage you to register and purchase a book from http://ascensionpress.com/studies/25351/registrations/new.

For more information, contact John Grelck at [email protected], see our website: http://lapurisima.org/monday-night-adult-group or follow us on Facebook: Defenders of Truth Bible Study Group.

ANNUAL ANGEL TREE

The parish Respect Life Group is again sponsoring the Christmas Angel Tree to help the Lompoc Pregnancy & Parenting Support Ctr. (735-2353). They help with crisis pregnancies, baby care, parenting classes and adoption information. They are always in need of baby clothes and baby items. They also welcome “gently used” baby clothes. Various needed baby items are listed on the back of each angel on the two Angel trees in the church vestibule.

So…PLEASE BE AN ANGEL, and PICK AN ANGEL from either tree and drop off the unwrapped baby item in the ANGEL BOX at MASS by Sunday, DECEMBER 31th. For more information, you may contact Dolores Lotspeich at 588-1166. Thank you.

A Birthday Without Gifts

Perhaps there are many children who have not been told that they CAN and SHOULD give gifts to the Baby Jesus at Christmas time. My mother had a tradition in which we could celebrate the Birthday of the Baby Je-sus as a real Birthday for Him. On December 1st, she placed a shoe box wrapped in Christmas paper in the room where our tree was soon to be. She cut a long slot in the top of the box by the bow. This was where we would slip in our gifts. She said it was time to begin writing down our gifts in the weeks ahead and to put them into the gift box. The gifts were as endless, it seemed, as the days ahead till December 24th when Moth-er would place the filled box under the tree. The gifts varied greatly as the years went by. One could write that they would promise to clear the dinner dishes, resist getting impatient/upset or have no grumbling. One favorite was to ask my mom or dad to drive me to visit someone ill or alone and take them some cookies or flowers. This tradition may help us all to celebrate HE WHO IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON. Per-haps we can put Christ back into Christmas through the eyes of children.

—Booker T. Washington
