Remember & Honor

Page 2: t. Isidore

St. Isidore the Farmer Parish

From Fr. Frank

People use Facebook and other forms of social media because they

want to be connected. They want to be "friends" with others and

they want people to invite them to be "friends" with them. People

want to share their lives with others and to reconnect with those

with whom they have lost touch.

This Sunday, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity. The

liturgy focuses attention on our belief that the One God we worship

is Three Divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Three

persons so "befriended" that they are one. We might say God is

"THE Social Network."

God has revealed himself as the Father and Creator who brings all

things into existence, as the Son and Redeemer who takes on our

human condition and saves us from the darkness of sin and death,

and as the Spirit and Sanctifier who opens our minds to the truth and

inspires us to live so that we might be blessed with joy and peace.

How these Three Persons are One God is beyond our total

understanding, but God is God and we are not.

Though our minds are incapable of grasping the God who made us,

we have experienced being drawn into the social network of God's

love in moments of prayer, in gatherings of the Church, in the

reception of Holy Communion, and in experiences of beauty and

love that take us beyond ourselves.

In this Sunday's Gospel(Matthew 28: 1620), the Risen Lord

commissions his disciples to "Go, therefore, and make disciples of

all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit."

The Lord sends out his Church to invite all people into a

relationship with God, to be part of that "Divine Social Network"

that is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Each time we sign ourselves with the cross and say those familiar

words, "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Spirit"

we are reminded of our connection with God.

In a sense, we sign ourselves into that "Divine Social Network"

from which all life and goodness come.

God Doesn’t Take a Break

An acquaintance who works in church ministry once told me a story

about one of the students she had in Faith Formation. This student

informed my friend that his family doesn’t come to Mass in summer.

“God takes a break in summer, and so do we,” he said.

There’s a lot to unpack here. First, it’s tragic to think of anyone vol-

untarily missing out on the Eucharist for so long. It’s also a real

problem in the church today that a lot of our folks don’t understand

the beauty of the Sunday obligation. But if I had to dissect this situa-

tion and pinpoint the thing I find most troubling, it’s the idea of God

taking a break.

I hope it’s starting to look like summer where you are. We’ve still

got a few weeks left before it’s official, but the school year should

be winding up for most kids, the birds should be chirping a little

louder, and hopefully your lawn is starting to green up nicely.

You’re probably daydreaming about the annual cabin getaway

weekend or waterskiing on the Fourth of July.

All in all, summer is going to be a nice break, even if like typical

Americans our break is full of productive work.

Thank God literally that He doesn’t take a break, even if we

do. Can we try to remember that, even in the midst of our many

wonderful distractions? Let’s enjoy this summer. Let’s live it to the

full. But let’s see it for the gift that it is and remember the thanks

we owe the Giver.
