BACKGROUNDANDFOUNDATIONSFor the last two decades (1998), theMeeting of SouthAmericanArchaeological Theory(also known as TAAS) has continuously proposed spaces for dialogue and exchangebetween institutions, collective groups, local communities, academias; spaces thatunfortunatelyeachtimearelessvisibleinourcontinent.Inthisway,thechoiceofholdingtheTAAS in Ibarra (Ecuador)continues topromote itsoriginal spiritbyquestioning thehegemonicparadigmsframingarchaeologyandthestudyofthepast,intermsofresearchandsocialpractice,hencecontributingalternativewaystorethinkthedisciplinefromtheSouth.The IXMeetingof theTAAS (June4-8,2018) in Ibarrawillbe the first time it isheld inEcuador. InitiallyittookplaceinVitória(Brasil)in1998andsubsequentmeetingswereheldinOlavarría(Argentina)in2000,Bogotá(Colombia)in2002,Catamarca(Argentina)in2007,Caracas(Venezuela)in2010,Goiánia(Brasil)in2012,SanFelipe(Chile)in2014andLaPaz(Bolivia)in2016.Based on a joint reflection of the situation and projection of archaeological theory andpracticeandits implicationsintheSouth,theTAASwasoriginallyformedin1996.SincethenithascongregatedacademicsandstudentsfromdiverseLatinAmericanuniversitiesalong with indigenous local communities and international institutions, including theWorldArchaeologicalCongress(WAC).Froma reflexiveperspective, archaeology allows theobservationof thedevelopmentofhumansocietiesandthuscanbeusedasatoolforcriticallyquestioningpoliticalviolencegeneratedbythenormativityofpracticesaroundgender,sexuality,territory,ethnicityandclass. With the knowledge acquired by TAAS, we expect to contribute elements totransform social dynamics and build alternatives applicable to a critical LatinAmericansocialtheory.Following this approach,wepropose twomain themesof theTAAS-Ibarra, emphasisingonlocalcommunitiesandsexualandgenderdiversities.Thesearealsocentralthemestoagrowing interest of strong consolidating alliances and coalitions between differentcommunities,entities,institutionsandsocialagentsofthenorthernEcuadorianhighlands.For this reason, the congress will take place in two physical spaces: the PontificiaUniversidadCatólicadelEcuador-IbarraandtheCentroCulturalElCuartelinIbarra.CALLFORPAPERSThis is anopen invitation topresentpanelproposals for theninthmeetingof theTAASthatwill takeplace in Ibarra,Ecuador,on June2018.As inpreviousversions, thepanelsconstitute an important space for reflection and creativity in terms of archaeological

theory,practiceandmethodologyintheLatinAmericancontinent.

Papers will be presented with a definitive timeframe followed by a slot for publicparticipation.Allpanelswill takeplaceduring the five-dayeventand theirdurationwilldepend on the number of papers accepted and the criteria established for the finalschedule.

fivekeywords.

· Inscribe at least two (and no more than four) organisers by providing theirnames, institutionalaffiliationsor contact informationande-mail addresses.Theparticipants can only coordinate one panel.We promote panelswith organisersfromdifferentcountriesand/ordisciplines.

· Attach titles and abstracts of four (minimum) and eight (maximum) papersincluding the contributions of the organisers. The abstractswill not exceed 200wordsandincludethename,institutionalaffiliationorcontactinformationande-mailaddressofeachpresenter.Panelistscanpresentaworkasmainauthorsanduptotwoadditionalco-authors.

·Includethenameofapersonthatcanserveasadiscussantforthepanel.

ACTIVITIESBUILDINGTOWARDSTHETAAS

MeetingsPrior to the forthcomingTAAS, therewillbea seriesof fivemeetings.The firstonewilltake place in themain location at the city of Ibarra in July 2017 andwill be about theAfricanDiaspora.ThesecondandthirdmeetingsarebeingplannedtotakeplaceinLimaandBuenosAires inNovember2017andwilldiscussAncestralKnowledges(Quito)andSouth-SouthDialogues(BuenosAires).Bothofthemsupportedbylocalcommunitiesandinstitutions.TherewillalsobeafourthmeetingthatwilltakeplaceatFordhamUniversityinNewYorkCity in Spring2018 thatwill focusonSexuality andGenderApproaches inArchaeaology.Finally,thefifthmeetingwilldealwithCulturalPatrimonyinLatinAmericaandwilltakeplaceinthecityofMexicoinDecember2017.Thismeetingissupportedbythemembersof theENAH (National SchoolofAnthropologyandHistory) and the INAH(NationalInstituteofAnthropologyandHistory)ofMexico.All of this aims to strengthen a previous process build-up with local communities andinstitutions inordertodiscusssomeof themainthemesthatarepartofcentraldebatesduringthemeeting.Round-tablesRound-tableswill bebasedon the same themesdrawn from the results of thepreviousmeetings and continue their discussions during the IX TAAS. Thus, round-tables offer acritical,reflectiveandactiveexchangebetweenspeakersandparticipants.Theround-tableswilldiscussthefollowingthemes:

DialoguesDialogues will be provided solely by female researchers who will deliver a masterconference on specific themes that contribute to archaeological theory, practice andmethodology.Alldialogueswillaccesspreviousfeedbackbyusinganactivevirtualforumthatwillgarnerparticipantthinkingthroughtheproposedthemes.ConversationsIn response topopulardemandsatpreviousmeetings, three conversationswillbeheld;one with representatives of indigenous communities, afrodescendants and montubiasfromthehighlands,coastandEcuadorianAmazonia.AnotherconversationwillbeaboutcontractarchaeologyandalastoneregardingAncestralterritoriesandarchaeology.Studentparticipation

As a way of enabling student participation from the early phase of their academicformation, there will be an open space for the exhibition of academic posters on theirwork,workshop projects that have taken placewithin their universities, undergraduatethesis,etc.Theposterswillbepresentedduringatotalofthreehoursthatwillbeallocatedduringlunch-timethroughouttheweekoftheevent.Theparticipationofresearchersandteachers in these activities will be promoted in order for students to acquire feedbackabouttheirresearchcontributionsandquestionsregardingtheirarchaeologicalpractice.This meeting will also generate the exchange of students from anthropology andarchaeologyofdiversecountries.OtheractivitiesWiththeaimtomultiplyspacesofdialogueandthemanifestationofdiverseexperiences,parallel to the academic activities of the congress, there will be a photography exhibit,documentaryprojectionandbookfair,aswellasmusicandartisticinterventions.
