PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Paul Lee-Maynard

It is a pleasure to have this opportunity to report to the Association on the outcomes of this our 29th year of continuous service to our Members.

During this term, the Board met 12 times for a regular monthly meeting, kicking off with an initial planning meeting in which portfolio responsibilities were allocated. In addition, the Board met as part of an initiative to review the Objects (and Rules) of Association and also as smaller sub-committees, tasked with progressing a number of events.

The commitment and time required of members of the Board to continue the operations and activities of the Association is not insignificant, with many hours volunteered each week. As such I extend a note of thanks and gratitude to the team of passionate and dedicated professionals, who I have been fortunate to work alongside during this term. A personal note of thanks to each:

Mark Haines – who has gone the extra mile in his role as Vice President providing a tremendous level of support and leadership to the entire team, while leading the evolution and growth Fruits in Suits.

Jason Jackson – for building on the great work done in prior years, by bringing increased focus and accountability to our financial management practices through a wealth of senior management experience.

Mary Shalala – "hostess with the mostess! and "Head Lemon! for the past 2 1/2 years. Your passion and commitment brought to bear on the growth of Lemons with a Twist has been unquestionable.

Jason Snaddon – Networker Extraordinaire; who has been instrumental in growing our networking focus through the newly branded Long Table Breakfast and Quarterly Canapés series of events, to resounding success.

Terry Preeo – for the wealth brought by your insight and experience gained from many years of service, and for the foundation you have laid in re-introducing the SGLBA Business Awards.

Will Noble – for great work in reshaping one of our key portfolios aimed at driving increased revenue generation potential through corporate partnerships.

Munro Donen – over the last two years you have shown unreserved commitment to promoting and supporting the work of the Association and raising our profile, and have been a valued member of the team.

Matthew Thompson – after joining the board part the way in to the current Board term, you quickly grasped the criticality of the membership portfolio and have made a significant contribution to one of the most administrative heavy roles on the Board.

Steve James – the most recent addition to the Board, you!ve stepped in to fill such a vital role and in just a few short months you!ve been Secretary, raised the bar higher and brought a real sense of discipline to your responsibilities.

Goals and Objectives

The Board started the year with a number of goals and objectives. We set out to:

1. Grow the number of female members of the Association

2. Provide increased opportunities for business-focused networking

3. Re-introduce the SGLBA Business Awards

4. Derive greater benefit for members, increasing the value of membership

5. Create opportunities to increase revenue

6. Raise the profile of the Association within the community

7. Continue to improve our administrative practices

8. Complete a review of the Objects (and Rules) of the Association

9. Understand Members of the Association and supporters better to current and future events, services and practices.

Challenges

As I mention earlier, the time commitment required by Directors of the Association can involve several hours per week (in some cases between 5 and 15 hours, or more), with each portfolio having its own particular workload. This level of commitment can prove challenging, and often individual circumstances can change affecting a person!s capacity to fulfil a role. While we commenced the 09/10 term with a full Board, 2 of our elected Directors were regrettably to stand down due to personal reasons.

Periods of reduced capacity within the Board, whether due to resignations or changes in personal circumstances can have a significant affect on the ability to deliver on the Board!s mandate. I commend the commitment and dedication of the remaining members of the Board for their support and steadfast will to continue with ensuring we remained on-track with our objectives.

I would also like to acknowledge the sacrifice this warrants and the resulting support and understanding needed from friends and family.

Beginning the new financial year in the middle of the recent financial crisis, it remained to be seen what, if any, the impacts might be to the Association. Many businesses within the preceding 6-month period had retrenched large numbers of staff, with the financial sector taking one of the biggest hits. And with consumer confidence affecting spending, small businesses were on notice for the potential lengthy downturn.

Outcomes and Achievements

I am pleased to report the following outcomes and achievements this year.

Membership Growth

As at 30th June 2010, we have seen membership levels jump by 15% overall on the same time the prior year. 30% of new members who joined in the 09/10 year were women, a direct reflection of the effort made to convert guest attendees of Lemons into Members.

Increased Business Networking Opportunities

On the back of our rename/rebrand of what was known as Breakfast Network Groups, we have dramatically expanded our offering of business-networking focused events. Now part of our Long Table Networking series, we have 5 breakfast groups which meet fortnightly and a quarterly networking night, Long Table Canapés, which has seen continual growth and receives rave reviews. Our inspiring and insightful guest speakers are a real draw-card to these events.

SGLBA Business Awards Launched

With the foundations for the return of the Business Awards laid over many months, we are proud to announce the SGLBA Business Awards will be held in August 2010. And we are delighted to partner with ACON in the prestigious Honour event this year, at which, one of our SGLBA Award winners to be recognised with the ultimate community award.

Value for Membership Increased

We have increased in the value derived through membership of the Association through a number of initiatives this year. Key to these are the added value offers provided through our Partners, SSO, Proteus Leadership Centres and OutTravel. We have also expanded the opportunity to network and enhanced the benefit of membership (through high-value Member only prizes, and free drinks now being only for Members at "Fruits! and "Lemons!). Even more benefits are planned through programs and initiatives under-development for the coming year. Details to come.

Profile of the Association

With an ongoing and rewarding relationship with the Sydney Star Observer in place, we have continued to maintain a high-level of visibility and prominence in the community. In addition, this year we have added to the Association!s profile significantly through the active promotion of our Facebook groups, a number of media articles and quotes, engagement and partnering with many community groups and continued development of relationships with the City of Sydney.

We are also extremely pleased to have had the opportunity to step in as Official Sponsors of Team Sydney, supporting the Team!s participation and quest for sporting success at the 2010 Gay Games in Cologne, Germany.

Through recent travel to San Francisco, I was also fortunate to meet with members of the Golden Gate Business Association Board, and other community and City leaders. I!m confident that maintaining and growing these and other valuable links will bring benefit to our Members.

Community Engagement and Support

Through our Good Works Fund, the Association continued to make a significant financial contribution to the community. Details of the recipients are available in the Finance Report. The Association receives a much larger number of applications for funding, which we are regrettably not in a position to support.

Successful transition of Fruits in Suits™ to The Beresford Hotel

After being "resident! for a period of 3 1/2 years at Slide Bar, the Board made the decision to relocate this already successful event to a new venue. The transition to The Beresford Hotel, taking in to consideration feedback received from Members on how the event could be improved on, has been well received with further growth and success trending positively.

Objects (and Rules) of Association

A full review of these have been completed, with amendments proposed that will ensure the Association!s practices remain in-line with changes in technology and in accordance with the relevant legislation, including the Associations Incorporation Act 2009 and Associations Incorporation

Regulation 2010.

Members and Supporters Surveyed

The Board invited both Members and supporters to contribute to the evolution and future of the Association through a survey conducted in December 2009. While response levels were lower than we had hoped, valuable feedback was received and insights gained that have influenced and will continue to influence how the Association, with the Board!s leadership and direction, moves forward.

Scholarships

The SGLBA awarded 1 scholarship under its Scholarship Program during 2009/2010. The scholarship of $1,500 was awarded to a student studying a Bachelor of Business Administration degree (majoring in Event Management) with Macquarie University.

Business Directory

Since the launch of our new website two years ago, our online Business Directory has grown from 50 entries to include over 150 businesses and professionals, many of whom offer special discounts or added benefits for SGLBA members.

Looking to the future

I feel very passionate about the potential of the Association, and therefore our members, and am committed to supporting the Association as it moves in to its 30th anniversary year. Should I remain President, I aim to work closely with each of the Directors individually, and collectively as a team, to build on the success of previous years, supporting each to realise the full potential of each Director!s portfolio.

In the coming year, I would like to work with the Board to:

1. develop 1, 5 and 10 year plans – supporting and encouraging NSW GLBT 2020 aspirations.

2. engender a goal-oriented approach, with a focus on managing targets and forecasted revenue and expenditure against plans.

3. bring increased focus to providing business-centric services through the creation of, and partnering in, the delivery of programs that support small businesses and encourage new enterprise.

4. work towards ensuring sustainability of resources and better capacity management to enable effective growth and improve service delivery for Members, with revenue generation being seen as a key enabler.

5. proactively promote and encourage the wider community to support members, driving "traffic! to the Business Directory, and exploring new ways of promoting member businesses.

6. invest in infrastructure (including the website) and resources to support our service to members and the continued improvement of our operations.

7. expand opportunities for women to network and engage with the Association.

8. actively engage in and encourage the fostering of greater collaboration, within the GLBT community.

In Conclusion

To our Members, thank you for the trust you have placed in your Board for 2009/2010. Our membership numbers continue to increase and that is a positive sign of our continuing success. Your support of the Association, its aims and events, is very important to us and the wider GLBT community.

I commend the Annual Report of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Business Association Inc for 2009/2010.

PORTFOLIOS UPDATES

MEMBERSHIPS

Matthew Thompson - Director, Memberships

Membership of the SGLBA has increased from 311 financial members at 30 June 2009 to 368 financial members at 30 June 2010. At 30 June 2009 there were approximately 135 non-financial members pending renewal, which ultimately did not renew for the 2009-2010 financial year.

At 30 June 2010 this number has been significantly reduced to 57 members due to our pro-active approach providing opportunities for in-person renewals online at Fruits in Suits, Lemons with a Twist and Long Table Canapés. The SGLBA Board is working on maintaining these memberships and seeking feedback from those who do not wish to continue their membership with the SGLBA. Strategies pending that feedback can then be addressed where necessary.

The SGLBA has welcomed 162 new members to the association in 2009/2010, 30% of which are new female members. As a result we now have 81% male members and 19% female members.

In December 2009, Matthew Thompson was welcomed to the SGLBA Board as Membership Director. Not long after his appointment, all outstanding membership cards were distributed and a process of posting membership cards within 2 weeks of endorsement at the SGLBA monthly board meeting was established. This has improved the relationship with members, providing them with certainty as to their acceptance as members of the SGLBA.

The New Members Welcome event was integrated with the Quarterly Long Table Canapés in September 2009. This introduces members to the Long Table networking concept and events, and aspects of the SGLBA outside of our traditional Fruits in Suits and Lemons with a Twist events.

BUSINESS NETWORKING & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Jason Snaddon – Director

SGLBA renamed Breakfast Network Groups (BNG) to a new brand “Long Table” to represent Long Table Breakfasts (LTB), Long Table Canapés (LTC) as well as Long Table Development (LTD).

LTB has grown significantly with two new groups formed in 2010. Darlinghurst/Potts Point as well as St Leonards. All have a very strong following across all groups. LTB meets fortnightly either on a Tuesday or Wednesday for breakfast at the following locations: Darlinghurst, Surry Hills, Waterloo, The CBD, Erskineville & St Leonards.

LTC meets quarterly for evening networking over canapés on the last Tuesday of each quarter. We have regular speakers and the Networking is facilitated. The last event in June 2010 had 72 attendees. All new members are invited to LTC at no cost as an introduction to the SGLBA.

At Fair Day the SGLBA provided a Long Table stall for members to showcase their businesses throughout the day.

In conjunction with the Corporate Partnerships Director, a strategic partnership has recently been formed with Proteus Leadership Centres. Over the next 12 months subsidised training programmes will be rolled out to members as an added member benefit.

CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS

Will Noble – Director

Corporate Partnerships, as distinct from sponsorship and advertising, is a portfolio created after the 2009 AGM. The partnerships portfolio was conceived to foster formal relationships with businesses to which SGLBA and its members can deliver benefit and from which the SGLBA can build benefit for its members and the community it serves. It was my stated aim when accepting this role that, being a new Director at large and this being an entirely new portfolio, I hoped to secure three corporate partners by the end of the administrative year, including strengthening our existing SSO relationship.

I am pleased to report that in the administrative year we identified 47 prospect partners across 12 partner sectors. We have engaged directly with 29 prospects and now have partnerships in place with 3; Sydney Star Observer, Out Travel and Proteus Leadership Centres. SSO is our official media partner providing a discounted communication channel for the association to reach its members and constituents as well as 50% discount from rate card for SGLBA members wishing to advertise in Southern Star Media publications. Out Travel is our official travel partner offering discounts to members and valuable prizes to ensure high attendance and participation in SGLBA events. Proteus Leadership Centres is the training and development partner of the association and its support is enabling the launch of the SGLBA Professional Development Programme, a series of 4 professional development sessions to be delivered in the twelve months from August 2010 to July 2011.

The total annual value derived from of our partnership agreements, not accounted for in our Profit & Loss or Balance Sheet, is approximately $15,000 which, in 2010/2011 we hope to increase to $30,000 through the engagement of a further 3 corporate partners.

FRUITS IN SUITS!

Mark Haines – Vice-President & Director, Fruits in Suits

Fruits in Suits continues to be a flagship event for the SGLBA and has grown in popularity over recent months. People have suggested that it is purely a social event, and there is certainly an element of socialising at Fruits in Suits. However there is still a strong element of networking too and it is satisfying to hear feedback relaying that people have found employment through Fruits in Suits, or that they have made successful referrals to other businesses. We are confident this event will go from strength to strength, offering a lively and welcoming environment within which Members and guests can network and socialise.

Summary of achievements

From the commencement of this term, a number of changes were introduced. This was largely in response to feedback provided by Members and guests through such channels as email, face-to-face and via the SGLBA survey completed late last year. Among those changes:

• We continued to develop 'Member-only' prizes. Our aim being to offer the most significant prize as a Member-only prize wherever possible. This ensures Members are rewarded and recognised for their support of the SGLBA.

• We increased the frequency of 'Business card' draws. This provided Member businesses with outstanding opportunities to grow their database and promote their services. From time-to-time, we also had prizes normally reserved for Members only, promoted to everyone via the Business card draw - thus giving everyone an occasional opportunity to win a particularly outstanding prize.

• Our 'Fruits in Suits' Facebook page was launched, and this currently has nearly 400 members, providing another forum by which Members and friends of Fruits in Suits / SGLBA can network with each other.

• In February 2010, The 'first free drink' was changed to a Member-only privilege.

• First time attendees are now recognised upon entry, thus facilitating easier recognition among the crowd so regular attendees can introduce themselves and make the first-timer welcome. This builds event loyalty and often translates into SGLBA membership.

• The value and variety of prizes has increased, at the same time we have secured some outstanding regular prize givers and increased our Member offers.

Relocation to The Beresford Hotel and future plans

In March 2010 we were advised that from April, Slide Lounge would no longer be able to host Fruits in Suits on Thursday nights.

Whilst we were sorry to leave Slide after three successful years, the timing dovetailed neatly with the findings of the Member survey results we received earlier in the year, which indicated people were looking for a change. The Board listened to the feedback we received, and after looking at a number of options, determined that The Beresford Hotel was the venue, which allowed us to most effectively address that feedback. It offers a number of spaces within the venue, thus providing variety for the event. Additionally, Merivale Group (who assumed ownership of the hotel in May) has demonstrated their support of the event by providing Member discounts and ongoing prizes. We look forward to a successful ongoing relationship with The Beresford Hotel and Merivale Group.

Going forward, in the warmer months, the event will be held in the courtyard. Ultimately, the event will re-locate to the function area upon its completion next year.

Since the move, attendance at the three subsequent events increased by approximately 80 people at each event.

Attendance and Revenue

For the last financial year (2008/9), average attendance was 238. At its highest it was 297, and at its lowest was 152. Since relocating the event in April, average attendance has been 285 people and we expect ongoing attendance to reflect this trend.

In the period September 2009 to March 2010, non-member attendance trended downwards. This was one contributing factor to a reduction in revenue of just over $6000 for the event. Other factors include the SGLBA Christmas party being held in lieu of Fruits in Suits in December and an upward trend of Member attendance, particularly in the last quarter, where a component of that increase was made of former non-members. Member admission (unlike non-members admission) is free, so this growth in Member attendance resulted in less revenue at those events.

The year ahead

In the coming year, we plan to increase the exposure and diversity of Member and Partner offers, both one-off and ongoing. We will continue to develop that all-important connection with new attendees - sharing with them the advantages of being associated with the SGLBA. With your support, we anticipate attendance to grow, and look forward to utilising different spaces within The Beresford Hotel. We thank everyone for their ongoing support of Fruits in Suits over the past 12 months in whatever capacity it was offered as an attendee, a prize giver, or one of the much-valued team of volunteers. It's truly a special event and we encourage everyone to value, cherish and share it with others.

LEMONS WITH A TWIST

Mary Shalala – Director

During the past three years we have enjoyed watching the event grow from strength to strength both in numbers as well as in success and reputation. We've seen many changes and trialled new ideas that have resulted from collaboration between the SGLBA Board and Slide management.

Two significant changes have impacted directly on the financial outcome and are reflected in the Financial report for this year-end.

1. For the first time in many years Slide imposed a fee at Lemons to help cover some of their increasing costs in providing canapés, free drinks and staff service. It was also decided that in order to minimise the outlay by Slide, the free drink upon entry would be restricted to Members only rather than to all patrons. This would see us cut down the free drinks from over 300 per night to approx 30. It was decided through joint discussion with the Board representatives and Slide management that this option was far better than increasing the entry fee from the standard $10 to $15 and from ongoing feedback this has been confirmed.

2. As a direct result of these changes combined with active promotion, we saw an increasing number of female patrons join SGLBA. Whilst this has been a very positive outcome, the figures for new memberships have increased but the figures for Lemons intake have decreased. This is due to the fact that now more attendees are members and as such not paying their $10 entry fee and if by estimate there are 30 new members that would reflect a $300 drop in intake per month. The final figures for year-end 2010 reflect an approximate $1000 drop in the takings as compared to last year however in actual fact the figures would have increased if we take into account the increase in membership revenue.

Another factor that has impacted on the Lemons intake is that for the past year the Event finishing time of 9.30pm has been removed and Slide have introduced a second women's event to follow. Given that the night now runs until midnight on average, more women are choosing to arrive later in the evening. To date we have stopped charging around 8pm so anyone arriving after that time was able to enter free of charge.

From end of July 2010, we will continue to charge the standard $10 fee until 9pm and encourage more women to arrive early and enjoy the chance to win one of our great prizes in the 8pm raffle.

Lemons With a Twist!s growing success has seen it being reputed as one of the best events for gay women in Sydney. We thank Slide and our community for their continued support and look forward to an even more successful year ahead.

MAJOR EVENTS

Terry Preeo - Director, Major Events

Fruit Salad (Dec 09)

The annual SGLBA Christmas function, Fruit Salad, was held at Arq this year. Despite a night marred by heavy rain and a bus strike, there was a significant crowd in attendance. Overall a quality night was enjoyed by 300 attendees. Certainly the high standard of catering and the cool house vibes played by GI Jode helped get the evening swinging. As usual the search for suitable venue proved daunting. It is becoming increasingly difficult to source different quality venues at a reasonable price. The board would like to thank Shadd Danessi at Arq for his assistance in providing a great night.

Fair Day (Feb 10)

SGLBA hosted two stalls at Fair Day in February this year. We had 15 GLBT businesses use the SGLBA facilities. The adjoining stalls were situated in a high traffic area of Victoria Park. Although this was a high expense for one day, it provided an opportunity to allow the Association greater exposure and provided a position that enhanced our member!s promotional prospects. The stalls also provided members with a home base for the day and the SGLBA stalls were a focal point for our members to encourage networking and friendships in a somewhat different environment. Certainly from a promotional aspect the Fair Day stalls provided the chance to promote various SGLBA endeavours. The “Long Table” networking groups, particularly, benefitted from the exposure and we received a number of member applications as a direct result of our presence that day.

Trapped (Feb 10)

Trapped in The City celebrated that hardy breed that worked in the city throughout the silly season. Held on the last day of the formal Christmas/New Year Holidays in the bijou splendour of Stephen Hathway!s hidden courtyard perched over a desultory Pitt St Mall on a tumultuously blistering Friday afternoon, Trapped lived up to its promise of providing succour, support and reward for those brave members who toiled through a period of the year when the rest of us were at North Bondi. Trapped was experiment in hosting smaller, boutique gatherings that allow for social intercourse in a relaxed environment. Elegantly catered by Adam Bold of Points of Difference events, Trapped is the model for similar events to be planned for the oncoming year.

BMW Launch Networking (Apr 10)

A networking night with a difference – cocktails mixed with gleaming German automobiles – held as part of the launch of a new model BMW at North Shore BMW.

SGLBA Business Awards

The SGLBA Business Awards are recently launched. The Awards are designed not only to recognise our Members! achievements in business and management, but also to provide the opportunity for recognising individuals or businesses who serve and support the wider GLBT community.

This year the Association is pleased to partner with ACON to provide recognition to our community leaders in the ACON Honour Awards in September 2010. The inter community group aspect of these awards indicates a maturity among the Sydney GLBT community groups that the Association welcomes and is pleased to be involved. It represents a growing cohesion within the community in order that our heroes and community leaders can be properly recognised.

There are five categories in this year!s awards recognising outstanding achievement by gay business people and their businesses. SGLBA felt it important that the awards recognise endeavours that may miss out on mainstream awards. People like successful lifestyle entrepreneurs and young people need particular encouragement.

The Business Awards recognise business people from the GLBT community for their enthusiasm, initiative and innovation. Nominations have been invited from GLTB Businesses and Business and Professional people to nominate for the 2010 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Business Awards.

The SGLBA Business Awards:

1. reward “excellence” by recognising business owners and managers who do what they do well;

2. inspire other GLTB business people and professionals to overcome the challenges that they face in their own businesses and hopefully learn from the achievements of others;

3. provide a valuable networking opportunity for GLBT business people,

4. encourage an ongoing commitment in developing and inspiring GLBT business persons, particularly of young people.

Winners of these awards will be nominated for the Honour Business Award, to be presented at the ACON Honour Gala later in 2010.

MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS

Munro Donen – Director

SGLBA has an ongoing full-page presence every month in the Sydney Star Observer. This allows the Association to promote ongoing activity and solicit memberships on a regular basis. SGLBA also has a regular feature in LOTL, which ensures we maintain a broad reach of communications to all sections of our Membership.

Over the past year this portfolio has focused mainly on managing our communication strategy and relationship with SSO – who are a valued media partner.

As a direct result of this ongoing business relationship, the profile of SGLBA has increased dramatically. The SGLBA brand is well recognised and respected in the community. The primary aim for SGLBA is to be seen as the premier GLBT business organisation in Australia and ensuring we choose the right communication and media channels is key to ensuring we stay true to that mandate and communicate our message to our target market in the most professional manner.

The ongoing communications strategy has been to shift SGLBA from being perceived as a “clicky social club” synonymous only with Fruits and Suits and Lemons with a Twist, to showcase other activities the Association is actively involved in. Through events such as Fair Day and our media presence, we have been spreading the message that SGLBA exists to support our members in the business and wider GLBT community, promoting the Association as a platform for our members to meet like minded people with whom they could network, share and grow their potential.

SGLBA also regularly engages in proactive PR activity, electronic database communication programs (eNewsletters etc), website updates and a proactive use of Facebook which now has over 400 members

SECRETARY

Steve James – Secretary

In the very short amount of time I have been on the SGLBA Board, it has certainly been a baptism of fire with my focus to assist and lead the Team in managing some of the core issues faced on the lead up to the AGM. There has been a particular drive to really “lift the bar” across a number of facets and hopefully Members will see this reflected in the level of professionalism displayed not only through the venue chosen, but the actual meeting and post event we stage. It should be seen as our pinnacle business networking event for Members each year. Coupled with the involvement of some of our corporate partners giving them the chance to showcase to you what they do, and most importantly, the improvement in the annual report presentation and production values. As has been stated, presiding over the changes to

the Objects of Association was a feature task and we look forward to Members seeing the benefits in adopting these changes at the AGM.

In the new term, if I am successful in being re-elected, I will continue to drive my fellow Directors toward continuing to raise the standards of Board activity from a professional and operational sense. Coming from a sturdy corporate background, am very used to managing commercial Boards and will no doubt be applying some of that required discipline to assist the Association running even more efficiently whilst always providing value to Members. Its been an honour to already make a mark on SGLBA Board activities in such a short period of time and am particularly excited about the opportunity to play a pivotal role in the 30th year of operation.
