SkotchÒ Trifecta Gas Valve Systems
When you are burning flammable or fuel gases, youneed an automated shutoff system you can counton for safe, reliable performance – every time. Noleaks. No out-of-sequence operation.
And that’s where Engineered Valves Group canhelp. SkotchÒ valves are unique gas burner shutoffvalve systems designed and manufactured withinnovative technology.
The Skotch Trifecta T4000F valve systems offer asuperior alternative to conventional multiple-valvepackages. The Skotch Trifecta is a complete valve
system contained within a single housing. Fail-closed models, which include appropriate acces-sories, are Factory Mutual (FM) approved as auto-matic gas safety shutoff valves. Ruggedly construct-ed, the Trifecta system provides all the blocking andventing functions needed for safe automated gasburner operation.
Engineered Valves Group offers T4000 series valvesystems in a broad range of sizes to meet the needsof any capacity gas burner or igniter. When neces-sary, valves can be specially configured to addressspecific requirements for piping design and sup-port, and hazardous location classifications.
A safer, more reliable engineered system for automated burner shutoff of gas service in your plant.
Shown are eight T4300F (3 inch) Skotch Trifecta gas valve systems replacing the need for twenty-four inde-pendently actuated valves. Considerable installation time and space are reduced.

Skotch Trifecta Gas Valve Systems
Strings of separate valves or multiple valve mani-folds are frequently used to provide automatedburner shutoff in fuel gas applications. Sucharrangements often consist of a vent valve and twoblock valves, with each valve being driven by a sep-arate actuator.
Failure of all actuators to operate in sequence is aconcern. Sometimes a single operator is mechani-cally linked to drive both block valves in tandem. Insuch a configuration, obstruction or linkage prob-lems that affect one valve will prevent the otherfrom closing, so the advantage of using a doubleblock is lost.
In many systems, vent valves are direct solenoidoperated, with no provision for ensuring positiveclosure. The result can be continuous leakage intovent piping when the block valves are open.
Installation of the conventional three-valve systemcan require as many as nine different connections. The SkotchÒ Trifecta system requires only three sim-ple connections; inlet, outlet, and vent. In addition, the Trifecta automatically gives you the correct ventsize based on the recommendations of NFPA andIRI.
Engineered Valves Group created the T4000 seriesas a fully integrated system engineered for gasburner shutoff applications. The result is elimina-tion of performance problems and a device thatoffers continuous, reliable, trouble-free service inyour most critical applications.
A Look at the Problem
T4600F (6 inch) Skotch Trifecta gas valves are installed above the burner level in the hori-zontal position which reduces burner front clutter.

Revision 1
The patented Skotch Trifecta T4000F series fabricat-ed body valve system is a safe, cost-effective, reli-able alternative to multiple valves and manifoldsfound in fuel gas systems. Used in applicationswhere double block and vent is required, theT4000F combines the function of two independentblock valves with a normally open vent valve in asingle, compact unit making it ideal for boilers, fur-naces and process heating equipment firing naturalgas, propane, and other fuel gas.
A single actuator mechanically opens the two blockvalves and closes the vent, assuring that the valvesoperate in sequence. Use of independent spring-to-close block valves ensures that obstructing onevalve does not prevent the other from closing. TheTrifecta valve system has no exposed linkage that
can be damaged and requires no adjustments forproper operation.
Because Skotch Trifecta valve systems are custombuilt for each application, we are able to modify ourstandard offerings to suit our customer needs.Installation flexibility is increased since the outletand vent ports can be rotated at 90° increments, and the valves can be mounted in any orientation. The valve system is completely self-contained andall necessary accessories are provided, includingposition indication switches and junction box.
Skotch Trifecta gas valve systems have been provenas a superior alternative to multiple valves systemsby decreasing installation space, time, and moneywhile increasing safety and reliability.

2" through 6"The following charts depict the relationshipbetween flow (SCFH) and pressure drop (PSI) for 2inch through 6 inch Trifecta valves. Data is given atvarious inlet pressures (PSIG). Follow known flowup the chart until you intersect the known operat-ing pressure. Where the two lines intersect, look tothe left for the pressure drop.
Example: 3” valve system with 100,000 SCFH natu-ral gas flow operating at 15 PSIG inlet pressure thepressure drop will be 2.3 PSI. Selecting a 4” valvesystem with the same conditions will result in apressure drop of 1.0 PSI.
Estimated pressure drops are reported for the entireTrifecta double block and vent system.
Figures can be used to compare relative perform-ance of the various valve sizes. Please note that cal-culations do not take into effect external piping ele-ments, such as reducers, tees, and elbows. Whencomparing this data with that of other manufactur-ers, please ensure any comparison figure estimatesthe performance over two block valves closely-cou-pled and not just a single valve.
For other process conditions, calculations may beperformed using the Cv values noted in valve spec-ification data, or contacting the factory.Calculations are based on natural gas at 0.65 spe-cific gravity, 60 degrees F.

Opening1. With the block valves closed and the vent open, gas enters the inlet port and is blocked by two flow-to-close plugs (the inlet and outlet block). To posi-tively prevent fuel leakage into an idle burner, thechamber between is vented to atmosphere throughthe hollow outlet valve stem. (Figure 1)
2. Pneumatic pressure at the top of the actuatorcylinder moves the piston downward, compressingthe outlet return spring and forcing the outlet blockopen. The cage slides down over the post until themachined surfaces inside the cage come in contactfirst with a spring-energized soft seal, and thenwith a metal back-up seat, closing the vent. (Figure2)
3. With the vent closed, the system continues tostroke, pushing the inlet block open, so that gasbegins to flow. A travel stop halts valve movementafter full stroke is achieved. (Figure 3)
Closing1. To close the valve and open the vent, pilot air isexhausted from the actuator. Return springs drivethe inlet and outlet valves toward their seats.(Figure 3)
2. As the inlet valve enters its seat ring, gas flow isisolated. The inlet block moves through its over-travel until contact is made with the back-up seat tofully close the inlet valve. (Figure 2)
3. As the outlet valve continues moving toward itsseat, the cage separates from the post, opening thevent. The outlet block enters the seat ring, isolatingthe vent from downstream piping. When the outletblock contacts the metal back-up seat, the system isfully closed. (Figure 1)

SkotchÒ Trifecta T4000C Series Gas
For larger igniters and smaller main burners, thepatented Skotch Trifecta T4000C series cast-bodyvalve system is a safe, cost-effective, reliable alter-native to the multiple valves and manifolds found infuel gas systems.
Used in applications where double block and vent isrequired, the T4000C combines the functions oftwo independent block valves with a normally openvent valve in a single, compact unit making it idealfor boilers, furnaces, and process heating equip-ment firing natural gas, propane, or other fuel gas.The unique design includes three ports: inlet, out-let, and vent. The cast steel body contains two valveplugs – an inlet and outlet block. The chamberbetween is open to vent through the hollow inletstem.
Flow to close inlet and outlet blocks are sized forfull flow to minimize pressure loss; increasing inletpressure forces the blocks tighter on their seats.Soft seals with over-travel and metal-to-metal backup seats assure positive ANSI/FCI 70-2 Class VI clo-sure. Proof-of closure (POC) switch is standard.
Advantages of using the T4000C valve system vs.conventional multiple valve and manifold setupsinclude:
· Compact for easier installation· Less maintenance and lower cost of ownership· Available Factory Mutual (FM) approved configu-
rations (fail closed only)· No out-of-sequence operation· Can be installed in any orientation
Because the T4000C valves operate using a singleactuator, problems such as out-of-sequence opera-tion, jamming, and maladjustment of linkage drivesystems are eliminated.

Opening
1. Energizing the actuator extendsits output shaft, forcing the valve’soutlet stem down to open the outletblock and compress the Actuatorspring.2. As the system opens, a soft ventseal on the bottom of the outlet plugcontacts a flat surface on the insideof the inlet plug stem. The springenergized vent seal is compresseduntil a metal to metal backup seat ismade. At this point the outlet is openand the vent is fully closed. (Figure 2)3. The valve continues to travelthrough vent closure, driving theinlet plug out of its seat and com-pressing the inlet spring.4. When the inlet plug’s soft sealclears the seat ring, both blocks areopen, the vent is closed, and gasmoves from the inlet port to the out-let port. The valve stops at full open.(Figure 3)
Closing
1. For valve shutoff, the actuator isdeenergized, causing the valve’s twoindependent return springs to closethe block valves. (Inlet block springand actuator return spring)2. First, the inlet block closes, mak-ing first a soft seal, halting the flowof gas, and then over traveling tomake a metal to metal backup seal.Next, the vent opens, relievingdown-stream pressure. Finally, theoutlet block closes, making a softseat and then over traveling to makea metal to metal backup seat, isolat-ing the vent from the burner.3. With the inlet and outlet blocksclosed and the vent open, any poten-tial leakage past the inlet valveescapes to vent through the hollowinlet stem. This positively ensures noleakage into the burner. SkotchÒ Trifecta Oil Valve System
A compact high-performance valve system for firing and purg-ing oil-fired burners and igniters.
Need a reliable, cost-effective solution for firing andpurging oil burners and igniters? Engineered ValvesGroup has the answer. Our Trifecta valve systemsoffer a number of advantages over conventionalvalves, and work with all types of burners and ignit-ers - including steam, air, or mechanically atomized.
The result is elimination of performance problemsand a device that offers continuous, reliable, trou-ble free service in your most important applications.
Strings of separate valves and packaged multiplevalve systems are commonly used with oil burnersand igniters. Problems inherent in such systemsinclude the possibility of out-of-sequence opera-tion, atomizing media contamination, leakage, orflame out. Additionally, multiple valve packagesrequire more space and may be costly to install andmaintain. Burner management logic may be morecomplex, increasing the cost of the system.
The Skotch Trifecta is a valve system with all com-ponents housed within a single valve body.Conventional systems require at least three valvesand actuators to accomplish what we provide witha single valve system. We perform all key functionsincluding fuel sequencing, atomizing and purgingof the down stream piping. They are designed tocomply with NFPA and IRI guidelines. This uniquearrangement has been proven in years of troublefree service on installations worldwide.
Engineered Valves Group offers a complete line ofSkotch valves for every application. In retrofits, eachmodel can be configured to match the valve oper-ating logic of existing burner management systems. These valve systems are compatible with any typefuel oil. We have installations utilizing #2, BunkerC, Crude, and waste oils.
When incorporating appropriate options/acces-sories, models T1003, T1006, and T506 are FactoryMutual approved for use as a “combination oil safe-ty shut off, atomizing, and purge valve.”
The Skotch Trifecta is a complete valve system that pro-vides oil shutoff, purging and atomizing in a single valve.

Principles of OperationClosed• The atomizing valve plug is held against the atomizing valve seat
by the actuator return spring, blocking the flow of the atomizingmedia. (Figure 1)
• The oil valve plug is held against the oil valve seat by the oil valvereturn spring located in the lower box, blocking the flow of oil.The flow to close plug valve is seated even tighter by the oil pres-sure from the oil inlet. (Figure 1)
• The oil valve plug and seat consist of two independent seals. Asoft seal provides the required overtravel for positive proof ofclosure indication and class VI shutoff. A flow-to-close metal tometal seal provides a backup to the soft seal for further safetyand Class IV shutoff. (Figure 1)
Purge (Scavenge)• The purge actuator pushes the atomizing stem down from the
closed position. (Figure 2)
• The atomizing medium flows from the atomizing inlet throughthe open atomizing valve seat to the atomizing outlet. It alsopasses through the open purge seat to the oil outlet providing afull purge from the center of the valve out.
• The purge flow purges the valve and downstream piping of resid-ual fuel during burner shutdown. It can also be used for down-stream warm up when used before light off.
• There is no oil flow since the oil valve stem is still fully seated inthe oil valve seat. The oil valve proof of closure switch providespositive indication of oil valve closure.
Fire• The fire actuator pushes the atomizing stem down. The atomiz-
ing stem contacts the oil valve stem, pushing the plug out of itsoil seat ring.
• The bottom side of the atomizing valve plug seats on the purgeseat, stopping the purge flow. When the plug of the oil valvestem clears the oil soft seat, oil flow begins. (Figure 3)
• When the oil stem begins movement, the oil valve proof of clo-sure switch deactivates, prior to the port actually opening. Thesoft seal is still made.
• The full force of the fire actuator pushes the atomizing valve plugagainst the purge seat, providing solid separation between theoil and atomizing medium.

ActuationThe T505/T506/T507, T1005/T1006/T1007, andT2005/T2006/T2007 valves use a spring-return tan-dem cylinder for electropneumatic operation withan air supply of 70 to 120 PSI as follows:
• Pressurizing the upper cylinder (Position 2)strokes the Trifecta valve 1/4” to the purge posi-tion. No adjustment is needed to achieve prop-er purging.
• Pressurizing the lower cylinder (Position 3)strokes the valve until the purge plug contactsthe purge seat, putting the system in the fireposition.
• Exhausting both cylinders (Position 1) allowsthe actuator spring to return the valve to theclosed position. Two pilot solenoid valves con-trol cylinder pressurization.
• Model T505/T1005/T2005 uses dual-coilmomentary contact solenoids for energize-to-trip, fail- in-last-position operation.
• Model T506/T1006/T2006 uses single-coil,spring return maintained contact solenoids forde-energize to trip, failed-closed operation, andis Factory Mutual approved, when incorporat-ing appropriate accessories.T507/T1007/T2007are non-FM.

Specialty ComponentsITT Corporation, Engineered Valves Group has beenan industry leader in providing customized solu-tions to meet the changing requirements of ourcustomers. Since Skotch Trifecta systems are cus-tom built for each project, we are able to accom-modate most non-standard requests.
Oil valve rack systemsOil valve rack systems provide greater savings ininstallation time and money. The Skotch valve sys-tem is attached to the free-standing rack such thatthe height can be adjusted in the field. The base isdrilled for bolt mounting or welding to decking.Engineered Valves Group can provide strainers, manual stuf-off valves, gauges, check valves, andrecirculation valves as required. As a result the fullsystem can be hydrotested and all welds verified atthe factory.
In addition to rack systems, Engineered ValvesGroup can provide specialty materials to suit yourspecific needs. Specialty components such as prox-imity switches, feedback position transmitters andcomponents utilized in corrosive and hazardousconditions are also available.
Cooling Steam OptionA cooling steam option provides drilled orifices inthe atomizing seat ring providing a constant cool-ing steam (or air) flow requirement while a burneris not in service. While the valve is closed a smallamount of atomizing media flows through theatomizing and oil outlets, as shown in the view tothe right. Our patented cooling steam option was aresult of a custom-engineered design that removedthe need for an extra valve and/or operator inter-face.

• Purge sequence is an integral part of our valve closure, allowing almost instantaneous switching from firing topurging modes.
ActuationThe T1001/T1003/T1004 valves use an electrohydraulic actu-ator requiring only 110VAC or 220VAC power. Operation isas follows:
Revision 1
T1001/T1003/T1004 Valve Systems T1001/T1003/T1004 Valve Systems
• Signaling the valve to move from fire to purgeor closed causes two dump valves to open, relieving hydraulic pressure and allowing aspring to move the valve stem up.
• Model T1001 uses normally closed dump valvesfor energize to trip, fail in last position opera-tion.
• Model T1003 uses normally open dump valvesfor deenergize to trip, fail closed operation. Thisversion is Factory Mutual approved, whenincorporating appropriate accessories.
• Signaling the valve to move from closed topurge or fire causes an internal pump to pres-surize a cylinder and push the atomizing valvestem down.
• A force limit stops the actuator when the atom-izing valve contacts the purge seat and thevalve is in the fire position.
