Tall Buildings, by Ardmore | Introduction
About ArdmoreSince our formation in 1974, Ardmore has developed into one of the largest family-owned construction groups in the UK. Although we work across the nation we’re best known as London’s builder.
We’ve been involved in hundreds of major projects across London, including landmark buildings that have shaped the face of the capital. We were the first tier-one contractor at the Athlete's Village in the Olympic Park. We are one of the main contractors for the Greenwich Peninsula. We are lead contractor for the multiphase regeneration of Heathside & Lethbridge and a tier-one contractor for Greenwich Peninsula.
Key to our delivery capability is the amount of work undertaken directly in-house. Unlike other main contractors of our size we can offer a flexible procurement approach to many packages due to the in-house expertise and resource we carry.
With our extensive delivery capability and London expertise we are able to offer a single-stage fixed price approach on projects up to £200m.
As London grows, it grows up. Tall building construction is one of our specialities and our projects have added a dramatic new dimension to the landscape of London and the UK. Our highly experienced teams have delivered some of London’s tallest and most high profile residential buildings.
We’ve successfully tackled every form of high rise construction, including steel frames, in-situ and post-tensioned superstructure and we have an established and integrated supply chain that can deliver the most demanding schemes.
We’ve delivered some of the most striking façades in the UK, from traditionally laid brick on the 23-storey Lighterman building at Greenwich Peninsula through to ultra-modern unitised technology at the 37-storey Chelsea Waterfront. We have also proven our capacity for undertaking our own facade design, manufacture and installation at Canaletto, City Road.
From technical to practical, we understand the challenges of delivering high-rise residential and commercial towers. Whether it’s designing and installing intricate façades 140 metres above the ground or minimising crane down time caused by elevated wind profiles, we have met every challenge with our own innovative solutions.

A major residential-led scheme on the fringes of the Olympic park, Stratford Halo comprises 706 mixed-tenure residential units, commercial units and artist studios. Spread over seven blocks, the scheme includes one of the tallest residential buildings in London, the 43-storey Halo Tower, alongside five new mid-rise blocks and the re-invention of the existing art deco soap factory Warton House.
Stratford Halo Client: Genesis HousingValue: £120mUnits: 43-storeys (131.88 metres)Completion: 2014
The core of the tower was jump-formed and the flat slab reinforced concrete frames of the blocks formed from a transfer slab at ground floor level. We erected the lightweight metal inner skin of the external envelope in advance of the cladding system to obtain a temporary watertight condition at the earliest opportunity, allowing us to dovetail the fit-out at lower levels with the frame construction above.
The project’s key design feature is the curvilinear Halo Tower. Rising 132 metres above a double basement the Halo tower is undoubtedly the architectural centrepiece of the scheme. The tower has a gross internal area of 29,000 square metres, with a 14.5% net to gross ratio. Over 10,000 cubic metres of concrete and 2,500 tonnes of reinforcement sit on top of 100 structural piles rising 43-storeys above a double basement car park. Three lifts, each travelling at 150 metres per minute, transport residents to the 296 apartments within the tower.

Our scope included fitting-out the smaller buildings, which had already been completed to shell and core standard, and the turnkey delivery of the 37-storey Hammersmith & Fulham tower. Having taken possession of the site following the creation of a new basement, we were able to immediately commence the fit-out of units in the lower-rise blocks whilst concurrently jump-forming the tower core and frame.
Our pro-active partial occupation strategy for the site meant that we could hand-over residential units in the lower level blocks at the same time as we were installing the Towers unitised cladding system
Served by a tower crane that was extended to an ultimate height of 120m as the frame progressed, we fabricated the steel balconies in-house as well as carrying out the frame, fit-out and services installation directly.
Straddling Chelsea Creek, the Chelsea Waterfront masterplan includes the refurbishment of the historic Lots Road Power Station and creation of several new-build blocks, including a striking 37-storey tower. Originally built in 1904 to power London’s underground transport system, the site is now embarking upon the next stage in its remarkable history.

Tall Buildings, by Ardmore | Canaletto
Designed by internationally-lauded UNStudio, Canaletto’s façade is a critical design element comprising expansive bespoke curved glass and metal façade spread over a series of three-to-five-storey clusters. To reduce exposure to a volatile supply chain market, we delivered the entire façade in-house, splitting the façade package into 40 individual components, including the largest curved glass panels in Europe and an architectural mega-frame fabricated at our North London workshops. The prefabricated façade elements were delivered to site and installed by our own façade installers.
Canaletto is a 31-storey residential tower comprising 190 exceptionally specified apartments, alongside a resident lounge and terrace on the 24th floor. Situated next to the City Road Basin, Canaletto rises 97 metres above a double storey basement that houses a residents’ swimming pool and spa, gym and cinema.
Canaletto Client: Groveworld / OrionValue: £80mUnits: 31-storeys (97.02 metres)Completion: 2016
Ardmore worked closely with building control to develop a partial occupation strategy to achieve sign-off of the first 18 floors over a year in advance of the overall completion. Occupying the lower levels of a single core tower whilst completing units above required several ‘buffer’ levels and a multi-phase partial commissioning and interim fire strategy. We commissioned two of the three lifts for resident use, with the third lift remaining in beneficial use. Once the scheme was complete, we commissioned the third lift which was bought into service for residents as we simultaneously re-commissioned the remaining lifts.

Perfume FactoryClient: Imperial Collage Value: £-Units: 31 Storeys (96.85m) Completion: 2020
The re-development at the site of the former Perfume Factory in North Acton, marks a significant milestone in Imperial College’s investment into Ealing. Providing a state of the art halls of residence with over 600 student rooms and 85 PRS units within a series of buildings rising to 31-storeys.
The scheme will provide student accommodation, residential suites for the rental market and mixed-use commercial areas. The design approach focuses on addressing the needs of overseas students, and attempts to create a home away from home, making the space as comfortable as possible, and a joy to spend time in. Flexibility and functionality was key to the common areas, with spaces designed to bring the student community together for various events held by the college.
The student accommodation comprises 603 rooms and 736 beds, arranged in cluster units, twin units, studios, warden units and sub warden units. The student accommodation sits in two blocks including the 96m brick-clad centrepiece tower, creating an iconic identity for the site. The development also includes 85 residential units, developed as Private Rented Sector accommodation available to key workers from Imperial College.

The tower element of the scheme, Candle House, is a twisted cylindrical residential tower on the canalside. The building is a 23-storey high, cylindrical brick tower - the façade itself twisting at four storey intervals, which has won an unprecedented number of design awards including the ultimate accolade of the Supreme Award at the 2011 Housing Awards, RIBA White Rose ‘Gold’ Award for Architecture and a White Rose Award for Housing in 2010.
A striking mixed-use scheme sandwiched between Leeds Central Station, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the River Aire. The scheme’s two buildings, Candle House and Waterman’s Place, form part of the award-winning Granary Wharf development, linked via footbridge over the river to Leeds City Centre.
We delivered the scheme from groundwork and piling and through a series of reinforced concrete frames clad in a mixture of traditionally laid masonry and timber cladding. We completed the landscaping for the entire site in high quality yorkstone and granite paving and refurbished the adjacent railway arches under Leeds Central Station to provide car parking facilities.
