Background Information:Molière

Born as Jean-Baptiste Poquelin on January 15, 1622 in Paris, France.

Died February 17, 1673 in Paris, France.

Studied at the Collège de Clermont, a Jesuit institution, where he received a solid classical background.

After finishing his secondary education, Molière studied law briefly and was allowed to practice in 1641.

Molière was expected to take over the post his father held, but in 1643 he decided to devote himself to the theater.

Since the theater life was not considered very respectable, he assumed the name "Molière" in order to spare embarrassment to his family.

Background Information:Molière (continued)

He joined a troupe known as the Illustre Théâtre that included Béjart and her family.

By 1644, he had served two prison terms as a result of the company's debts.

Molière joined another company with the Béjarts and toured all over France for the next thirteen years.

In 1650 Molière became the head of the troupe, and he managed to secure the support of the Prince of Conti.

Plot

Orgon takes Tartuffe into his house in hopes to get into Heaven.

Tartuffe acts religious but takes advantage of Orgon and takes his food and his money.

Tries to seduce Orgon’s wife Elmire.

Orgon doesn’t believe the allegations against Tartuffe and wants to call off his daughters engagement so she can marry Tartuffe.

Elmire figures out the only way to make Orgon believe is to have him catch Tartuffe in the act.

Once Orgon figures out, Tartuffe already has the deed to his house and plans to kick everyone off of the property.

The last minute intervention of the King saves the day.

Act 4 scene 4 (Orgon was hiding under the table.)

Act 1 scene 1 (at Orgon’s house)

Sound

The beginning song before the play is “Can Can Music” by Offenbach

The play opens in a very quick scene to grab the audience’s attention but the scene is very playful. The song establishes the fast paced humor feeling in the play from the get go.

Sound

The ending song is “Bizet Carmen Overture”

The ending of the play is on such a positive note where everyone is relieved and celebrating. An upbeat and joyous sounding instrumental piece would fit best to wrap the play up.

Sound effects

There are several scenes that involve a door opening and closing

Another sound effect is a valet being heard offstage

Act IV Scene V involves Tartuffe examining corridors for people hiding so various opening and closing of doors and draws will be heard offstage
